Acquisition Of L2 Phonology: An Acoustic Analysis Of The Centralization Of L2 Spanish /A/ In Adult L1 English-Speaking Learners, Alexander Charles Aldrich Jul 2014

Acquisition Of L2 Phonology: An Acoustic Analysis Of The Centralization Of L2 Spanish /A/ In Adult L1 English-Speaking Learners, Alexander Charles Aldrich

Theses and Dissertations

Although many studies have been carried out regarding the acquisition of Spanish as a second language, very few have focused on the acquisition of Spanish vowels. Studies that have compared the L2 production of Spanish vowels in learners who have spent an extensive time living abroad versus at home learners are scarce at best. The present study hopes to add to the literature by comparing the L2 pronunciation of the Spanish /a/ in these two groups using an acoustic analysis with the aid of speech-signal processing software and the inclusion of a native group for comparison. In addition, it hopes …

The Changing Of The Person In The Narration In Modern Chinese Literature And Its Intellectual Implications, Huiying Xie, Weiwei Zhou Jun 2014

The Changing Of The Person In The Narration In Modern Chinese Literature And Its Intellectual Implications, Huiying Xie, Weiwei Zhou

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The person used in narration is an essential factor of narrative rhetoric, and it plays an important role in the construction and representation of the "realness" in a novel. The choice of the person in narration may, on the one hand, abide by the implicit imperatives which the historical context enforced on "realness," and closely links to the identity of the intellectual group who undertakes the task of narrating. The novels during the May 4th Movement in 1919 correspond to the spirit of individual liberation, and the following two decades saw the transformation to popularization and nationalization. The paper demonstrates …

Religiosity, Marital Adjustment, And Intimacy, Bryan L. Presler Jun 2014

Religiosity, Marital Adjustment, And Intimacy, Bryan L. Presler

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the complexities of how religious attendance, personal religious activity, and importance of religion are related to marital adjustment and emotional, sexual, and spiritual intimacy. Previous research suggests that church attendance is related to higher marital adjustment; however, the relationship between sexual satisfaction and religiosity appears to be minimal, although Christian authors often suggest a link. The Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS), and the Emotional, Sexual, and Spiritual Intimacy Scale (ESSI) were administered to a sample of 88 married individuals. One-way ANOVAs found that religious attendance was not related to marital adjustment, or …

Space-And-Place Modelling-And-Making: A Dialogue Between Design And Geography, Robert Harland, Maria Loschiavo Dos Santos Jun 2014

Space-And-Place Modelling-And-Making: A Dialogue Between Design And Geography, Robert Harland, Maria Loschiavo Dos Santos

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Geography and design have much in common. Both draw from or reflect science, social science, humanities, and employ sophisticated technology to achieve their aims. However, aside from a mutual interest in urbanism, there appears to have be little collaboration between the two. And yet some aspire for design to learn from geography. In this paper we explore how the characteristics associated with geography and design may function together in a space-and-place modelling-and-making dialectic.

Sidney Rigdon's Plea To The Saints: Transcription Of Thomas Bullock's Shorthand Notes From The August 8, 1844, Morning Meeting, Robin S. Jensen, Lajean P. Carruth

BYU Studies

At meetings held in Nauvoo, Illinois, on August 8, 1844, Sidney Rigdon and Brigham Young each asserted their claims to succeed Joseph Smith as leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Thomas Bullock, the clerk for the Church Historian's Office, recorded notes of the morning meeting, including speeches by Rigdon and Young, in Taylor shorthand. Until recently, Bullock's notes have not been deciphered and transcribed. This article presents the transcription of this source and an introduction to establish the context of the meeting.

Bullock's notes are fragmentary but are the only known source to have been taken …
