"Transforming Care Through Disruptive Design": Incorporating A Midwifery Model Of Care Into Obstetric Practices, Lauren Marsh
"Transforming Care Through Disruptive Design": Incorporating A Midwifery Model Of Care Into Obstetric Practices, Lauren Marsh
Senior Theses
Maternal and child health outcomes in the United States are far poorer than in other industrialized nations. To improve women’s experiences with the maternity care system, nurse-midwife Sharon Schindler-Rising developed the CenteringPregnancy (CP) group model of prenatal care (PNC). Research comparing CP with ‘traditional’ one-on-one PNC has found that implementing CP results in decreased rates of preterm birth and low birth weight, increased rates of breastfeeding, and improved outcomes for women who typically experience health disparities, including African Americans. Documented success of the model in the Greenville Health System convinced the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services of …
What's Wrong With The Christian West, Joseph Studemeyer
What's Wrong With The Christian West, Joseph Studemeyer
Senior Theses
Western Christian groups are losing significant numbers of adherents in the area formerly known as Christendom (Western Europe and European-dominated former colonies), a trend which seems to be quickening with time. In addition, the same Western Christian denominations are in the midst of an unprecedented period of fragmentation, with many splitting over questions of doctrine and practice. More controversially, traditionalists both within the Western churches and outside of them have claimed that the Western denominations are also experiencing a qualitative decline, asserting that the Christianity of the West has been doctrinally compromised. This thesis posits an underlying philosophical reason for …

To Hell... And Back? An Examination Feminism And Its Consequences, Kaylee Mahaffey
To Hell... And Back? An Examination Feminism And Its Consequences, Kaylee Mahaffey
Senior Theses
The goal of this thesis is to give an in depth analysis of the feminist movement and the effects it has had on society and the family unit. The first portion of the thesis will be allotted to a historical account of the feminist movement and the various feminist theories that it spawned throughout the three waves of the movement. After the account of the movement itself, a description of the four categories of feminist ideologies will be explained and mildly critiqued. Once the historical stage has been set, a thorough criticism feminism will be performed and particular emphasis will …

The Separation Of Humans And Nature As It Relates To Environmental Degradation, Vinay Srinivasan
The Separation Of Humans And Nature As It Relates To Environmental Degradation, Vinay Srinivasan
2014 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award
In his Reflective Essay the author described being surprised by the direction his research took and recognized that his holistic approach in this research project made it an enjoyable experience. He concludes, “This is how passions are sparked, questions start flowing, and perhaps the next revelation is reached.” The author’s research focused on the Western view of the divide between people and the environment and the human attitude of domination over nature “from the perspective of three integrated but distinct lenses—the religious, the economic, and the civilizational.”

Economics Honors Projects
Rising post-secondary education costs have increased the importance of undergraduate students’ institution and field of study choices, two aspects of higher education that affect post-graduation earnings. This paper analyzes the impact of the interaction between college major and attending a liberal arts institution on post-graduation wages. Using data on Minnesota bachelor’s degree completers who were employed at Minnesota firms 6 to 18 months after graduation, I find robust evidence that the interaction is significant. Liberal arts students are disadvantaged when other institutional and individual characteristics are controlled for, but they may be relatively less so depending on field of study.
South Asian Muslim Health Outcomes In Great Britain: The National Health Service And The British National Imaginary, Marni P. Schreiber
South Asian Muslim Health Outcomes In Great Britain: The National Health Service And The British National Imaginary, Marni P. Schreiber
Religious Studies Honors Projects
Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) ensures equal access care to all British residents. Health outcomes, nonetheless, vary across socioeconomic class, education level, and geographic location, a phenomenon particularly affecting Britain’s South Asian Muslim communities. This paper will contextualize the NHS within the British national imaginary and analyze discursive, social, and economic variables influencing Pakistani and Bangladeshi poor health. I will integrate religious-based analysis into healthcare studies and question if health outcomes act as a marker of distinction between minority and majority populations. Though Muslim organizations, the NHS, the Department of Health, and government multicultural policies hope to reverse health disparities, …

Must We Forgive?: Exploring The Limits And Possibilities Of Forgiveness And Resentment, Margaret Adele Schneiderman
Must We Forgive?: Exploring The Limits And Possibilities Of Forgiveness And Resentment, Margaret Adele Schneiderman
Honors Theses
Conflict has marked civilization from Biblical times to the present day. Each of us, with our different and competing interests, and our desires to pursue those interests, have over time wronged another person. Not surprisingly then, forgiveness is a concern of individuals and groups¿communities, countries, religious groups, races¿yet it is a complex idea that philosophers, theologians, political scientists, and psychologists have grappled with. Some have argued that forgiveness is a therapeutic means for overcoming guilt, pain, and anger. Forgiveness is often portrayed as a coping mechanism¿how often we hear the phrase, ¿forgive and forget,¿ as an arrangement to help two …

“You Have Been God’S Grace To Me”: The Presence Of Agape And Grace Outside Christianity In Marilynne Robinson’S Gilead, Ruyue Yuan
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Many theologians traditionally claimed that only people who believe in God are able to love truly, for love comes as the result of receiving God's grace. This implies that non-Christians fail to love truly due to their lack of faith. However, many contemporary theologians have found this account of non-Christians unsatisfying, as it seems to fall short of explaining the ethical force of non-Christian lives. Thus, a theological question arises as to whether or not God's grace exists outside the church, enabling people to love authentically. Marilynne Robinson addresses this very question in Gilead. Robinson shows that an unbeliever …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"Religion is a very complicated concept for many people, but religion can be seen in every corner of the world and its effects come in many different shapes and sizes. One word that can be seen as an effect or that is simply associated often with religion is violence. Violence like religion comes in many different forms and can be seen very easily in the world around us. Many people have written on the concepts of religion and violence and how they are connected with each other. But it …

'Tickling The Palate' Gastronomy In Irish Literature And Culture, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire, Eamon Maher
Articles
This volume of essays which originated in the inaugural Dublin Gastronomy Symposium held in the Technological University Dublin in June 2012, offers fascinating insights into the significant role played by gastronomy in Irish literature and culture.
The book opens with an exploration of food in literature, covering figures as varied as Maria Edgeworth, James Joyce, Charles Dickens, Enid Blyton, John McGahern, and Sebastian Barry. Other chapters examine culinary practices among the Dublin working classes in the 1950's, offering a stark contrast to the haute cuisine served in the iconic Jammet's Restaurant; new trends among Ireland's 'foodie' generation; and the economic …
