Rdfa And Microdata, Bethany Wetherill

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This project seeks to explore and observe differences in RDFa and microdata and their ability to retain proper schematization and syntax when converted back to RDF/XML. Online conversion tools were used to transpose existing RDF/XML files from online data dumps to RDFa and microdata, and then back to RDF/XML, offering some insights into RDFa and microdata’s capabilities, as well as a taste of what may happen in the future if major search engines decide to move away from microdata and developers need to convert to a different semantic markup language. Multiple online converters were employed in the conversion process in …

Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine Jan 2014

Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A literature review of user preferences, research habits and needs, and citation studies are used to argue that deaccession of print titles in the humanities and social sciences in academic libraries should occur in a conservative fashion as libraries transition to greater digital holdings. The issue of retention of translations is given special emphasis. The centrality of engaged research for undergraduate education makes the retention, at present, of both a rich print and digital collection necessary as the distinction between a collection geared toward faculty research and one for undergraduate research becomes less important.

Tech Speak And Librarian-Ese: Justifiable Jargon, Or Junk?, Tammi M. Owens

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Many libraries are redesigning their websites for great user experiences through clean design. But what if you’ve redesigned your website, but still have patrons who are frustrated? It’s time to focus on language. Librarian-ese and tech speak are confusing and defeat our patrons before they begin. In this session I’ll show how you can use plain language, one of the main tenets of usability, to boost patron confidence. I’ll share real-life examples of websites and chat transcripts showing how little changes in language can make a big difference.

Scholarly Works

This article contains a book review of the newest edition of Commercial Litigation in New York State Courts (West), edited by former New York County Lawyers President Robert Haig of Kelley Drye & Warren LLP. The author further notes that while the most recent edition of the treatise has been widely reviewed statewide, prior to this book review there has been little, if any, attention to the value of the …

Montana's Rural Version Of The School-To-Prison Pipeline: School Discipline And Tragedy On American Indian Reservations, Melina Healey

Scholarly Works

American Indian adolescents in Montana are caught in a school-to prison pipeline. They are plagued with low academic achievement, high dropout, suspension and expulsion rates, and disproportionate contact with the juvenile and criminal justice systems. While these are typical of the school-to-prison phenomenon as it also appears in poor minority communities across the country, the rates and the disproportion for American Indians in Montana are particularly acute. Even more disturbing, many American Indian students in Montana are also the victims of another heartbreaking trend related to the school-to-prison pipeline — alarming levels of adolescent suicides and self-harm. The tragic situation …

The First Thing We Do, Jorge R. Roig

Scholarly Works

There is currently a concerted effort to dumb down America. In the midst of this, the American Bar Association’s Council of the Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar recently agreed to propose that tenure for law professors be eliminated as a requirement for accreditation of law schools. This article analyzes the arguments for and against tenure in legal academia, and concludes that the main proposed justifications for eliminating tenure are highly questionable, at best. A lawyer is more than a legal technocrat. Lawyers are policy makers and public defenders. They are prosecutors and activists. And the development …

The Story Of Jewish Polygamy, Mark Goldfeder

Scholarly Works

This Article examines the intersection of law, religion, and culture in the evolution of polygamy in the Jewish tradition. It traces the development of Jewish thought on polygamy over time by assembling and analyzing relevant discussions, arguments, decisions, and biblical interpretations from the time of the Hebrew Bible passages, when plural marriage was an accepted part of Jewish society, to the early Middle Ages when the practice was formally and conclusively rejected. In doing so, the Article attempts to untangle the various influences-both practical and doctrinal, internal and external-on the evolution of marriage law in Jewish communities. These findings highlight …

The Adoption Of Children In Judaism And In Israel; A Conceptual And Practical Review, Mark Goldfeder Jan 2014

The Adoption Of Children In Judaism And In Israel; A Conceptual And Practical Review, Mark Goldfeder

Scholarly Works

Religion has played a fairly significant role in the history of adoption law, both in the U.S. and internationally. Although there are plenty of questions raised by religion in the context of adoption, one particular issue revolves around whether or not religion should factor into a "best interests of the child" placement determination. Whether or not it should factor into the determination, in practice religion often plays a part in the legal determination of which home will provide the best and most supportive environment for an adopted child. While much has been written about the legal aspect of putting a …
