Relation Of Distress Tolerance And Dental Care-Related Fear And Anxiety, Sarah E. Hayes Jan 2014

Relation Of Distress Tolerance And Dental Care-Related Fear And Anxiety, Sarah E. Hayes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Distress tolerance can be defined as the degree to which one is able to cope with and endure negative emotional states. This study examined possible differences in levels of distress tolerance between adults with dental phobia and age-, sex-, and income-matched adults without dental phobia. Using 42 volunteers who responded to advertisements (n = 21, dental phobia group; n = 21, healthy comparison group), this investigation utilized self-report measures of distress tolerance, fear of pain, anxiety sensitivity, dental care-related fear and anxiety,, and depression. All participants were assessed with the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule (ADIS-IV); for the dental phobia group, …

The Power Of Multiplying: Reproductive Control In American Culture, 1850-1930, Virginia B. Engholm Jan 2014

The Power Of Multiplying: Reproductive Control In American Culture, 1850-1930, Virginia B. Engholm

Theses and Dissertations--English

Prior to the advent of modern birth control beginning in the nineteenth century, the biological reproductive cycle of pregnancy, post-partum recovery, and nursing dominated women’s adult years. The average birth rate per woman in 1800 was just over seven, but by 1900, that rate had fallen to just under than three and a half. The question that this dissertation explores is what cultural narratives about reproduction and reproductive control emerge in the wake of this demographic shift. What’s at stake in a woman’s decision to reproduce, for herself, her family, her nation? How do women, and society, control birth?

Hybridity, Trauma, And Queer Identity: Reading Masculinity Across The Texts Of Junot Díaz, Hannah Fraser Legris Jan 2014

Hybridity, Trauma, And Queer Identity: Reading Masculinity Across The Texts Of Junot Díaz, Hannah Fraser Legris

Theses and Dissertations--English

When writing about Junot Díaz’s Drown (1996) Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) and This is How You Lose Her (2012), I focus on the iterations of masculinity depicted and embodied by Yunior de las Casas, the primary narrator of this collection. I explore the links between diaspora, hybridity, masculinity, and trauma, arguing that both socio-historical and personal traumatic experience reverberates through the psyches and bodies of Díaz’s characters. I demonstrate the relationship between Yunior’s navigation of the United States and the Dominican Republic and his ever-shifting sexuality, self-presentation, and gender identity. The physical and discursive spaces he must …

Image/Text And Text/Image: Reimagining Multimodal Relationships Through Dissociation, Amy K. Anderson Jan 2014

Image/Text And Text/Image: Reimagining Multimodal Relationships Through Dissociation, Amy K. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations--English

W.J.T. Mitchell has famously noted that we are in the midst of a “pictorial turn,” and images are playing an increasingly important role in digital and multimodal communication. My dissertation addresses the question of how meaning is made when texts and images are united in multimodal arguments. Visual rhetoricians have often attempted to understand text-image arguments by privileging one medium over the other, either using text-based rhetorical principles or developing new image-based theories. I argue that the relationship between the two media is more dynamic, and can be better understood by applying The New Rhetoric’s concept of dissociation, which …

Apparitional Economies: Spectral Imagery In The Antebellum Imaginaton, Holly F. Osborn Jan 2014

Apparitional Economies: Spectral Imagery In The Antebellum Imaginaton, Holly F. Osborn

Theses and Dissertations--English

Apparitional Economies is invested in both a historical consideration of economic conditions through the antebellum era and an examination of how spectral representations depict the effects of such conditions on local publics and individual persons. From this perspective, the project demonstrates how extensively the period’s literature is entangled in the economic: in financial devastation, in the boundaries of seemingly limitless progress, and in the standards of value that order the worth of commodities and the persons who can trade for them.

I argue that the space of the specter is a force of representation, an invisible site in which the …

Knowing And Being Known: Sexual Delinquency, Stardom, And Adolescent Girlhood In Midcentury American Film, Michael Todd Hendricks Jan 2014

Knowing And Being Known: Sexual Delinquency, Stardom, And Adolescent Girlhood In Midcentury American Film, Michael Todd Hendricks

Theses and Dissertations--English

Sexual delinquency marked midcentury cinematic representations of adolescent girls in 1940s, 50, and early 60s. Drawing from the history of adolescence and the context of midcentury female juvenile delinquency, I argue that studios and teen girl stars struggled for decades with publicity, censorship, and social expectations regarding the sexual license of teenage girls. Until the late 1950s, exploitation films and B movies exploited teen sex and pregnancy while mainstream Hollywood ignored those issues, struggling to promote teen girl stars by tightly controlling their private lives but depriving fan magazines of the gossip and scandals that normally fueled the machinery of …

Whithersoever Thou Goest: The Discourses Of Exile In Early Modern Literature, Joshua Seth Lee Jan 2014

Whithersoever Thou Goest: The Discourses Of Exile In Early Modern Literature, Joshua Seth Lee

Theses and Dissertations--English

Exile is, as Edward Said so eloquently put it, “the perilous territory of not-belonging.” Exiled peoples operate on the margins of their native culture: part of it, but excluded from it permanently or temporarily. Broadly speaking, my project explores the impact of exile on English literature of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. English exiles appear frequently in literary studies of the period, but little attention has thus far been focused on the effect of exile itself on late medieval and early modern authors. Historical studies on exile have been more prevalent and engaging. My project builds on this …

A Spatial And Economic Analysis For Land Conservation Planning, Sudiksha Joshi Jan 2014

A Spatial And Economic Analysis For Land Conservation Planning, Sudiksha Joshi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rapid loss of biodiversity has been mainly attributed to the loss of habitat and habitat fragmentation. Conservation efforts have increased over the years but the rate of biodiversity loss has yet to slow down. Biologists attribute this to setting conservation targets without considering scientific recommendations. Practitioners on the other hand claim scientific recommendations to ignore socioeconomic costs and therefore are unrealistic. In the United States, protected areas primarily include public lands but conservation easements have become increasingly more popular. However, the effectiveness of conservation easements have been debatable and has garnered much discussion. Three related issues in land conservation planning …

Investigating The Interactions Of Tri-Peptides On Gold Nanoparticles Using Solid-State Nmr Spectroscopy And The Development Of 1h- 2h Dipolar Recoupling Experiments, Ichhuk Karki Jan 2014

Investigating The Interactions Of Tri-Peptides On Gold Nanoparticles Using Solid-State Nmr Spectroscopy And The Development Of 1h- 2h Dipolar Recoupling Experiments, Ichhuk Karki

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is a powerful technique to study the structure of biological and inorganic systems, especially non-crystalline and insoluble samples that are difficult to study for X-ray diffraction and solution NMR spectroscopy methods. We used solid-state NMR spectroscopy to elucidate the structure and interactions of tri-peptides on gold nanoparticles. Tri-peptides CysAlaAla (CAA) and AlaAlaCys (AAC) are the focus of this work. These peptides are incorporated on gold surfaces through thiol-gold interactions and their structures on gold surfaces are studied using 1H and 13C solid-state NMR spectroscopy. NMR spectroscopy shows that CAA forms a uniform monolayer on gold nanoparticles while …

Shedding Light On Gis: A 3d Immersive Approach To Urban Lightscape Integration Into Gis, Andrew Kaufman Jan 2014

Shedding Light On Gis: A 3d Immersive Approach To Urban Lightscape Integration Into Gis, Andrew Kaufman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have the ability to map, model, and analyze real world data and phenomena, and yet visibility and lighting conditions are rarely considered or researched in Geographic Information Science (GISci). Lighting technologies have been created and implemented to overcome the darkness of night and other issues of visibility, and in no place is that more evident than urban areas. Though not researched heavily in GIS, it is now possible to model and analyze lighting of the built environment using GIS, 3D modeling and rendering software. This thesis explores the night time urban lightscape, its spatial aspects and …

Integrated Motor Protein Based Nanodevices For Biomolecular Transport, Yongkuk Lee Jan 2014

Integrated Motor Protein Based Nanodevices For Biomolecular Transport, Yongkuk Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A living cell can be considered as a miniaturized device, which carries out complicated tasks such as reproduction, energy conversion and molecule transport. Many cellular functions are highly efficient and mostly performed at nanoscale, which is pursued in fields of Micro total analysis system (&mgr;-TAS) or lab-on-a-chip. Due to unique mechanical functions performing micro/nano transport with high efficiency of the chemo-mechanical energy conversion in cells, motor proteins have been emphasized to perform laboratory functions such as delivery, assembly, detection, and micro/nano-engines. However, several issues ranging from in vitro stability of motor proteins to understanding their functionalities with inorganic materials remain …

A Feasibility Analysis Of The Implementation Of Passive Treatment Systems For Remediating Acid Mine Drainage In The Lick Run Watershed, William Joseph Leonetti Jan 2014

A Feasibility Analysis Of The Implementation Of Passive Treatment Systems For Remediating Acid Mine Drainage In The Lick Run Watershed, William Joseph Leonetti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Historical mining operations, mostly coal mining, has left the State of West Virginia with many abandoned mine lands that often produce nonpoint sources of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) pollution. This work studied a small tributary to the Cheat River, Lick Run, which has been heavily impaired by AMD through legacy coal mining. Field and laboratory water quality testing verified that Lick Run does not meet Water Quality Standards (WQS). The purpose of this research was to evaluate current stream conditions of Lick Run and to provide means of remediation through passive treatment systems to reduce metal and acidity loads.;Lick Run …

Exploring Perceptions Of Fighting On The College Campus Through A Gendered Lens, Hannah Liebreich Jan 2014

Exploring Perceptions Of Fighting On The College Campus Through A Gendered Lens, Hannah Liebreich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis explores gender and fighting on the college campus. Recent studies that focus on the behavior of college students establish that risky behaviors, such as fighting, occur and are often normalized by students on college campuses (Armstrong and Hamilton, 2013; Kimmel, 2008; Weiss, 2013; Wechsler and Wuethrich, 2002). While these studies concentrate primarily on the role alcohol plays in social situations and in a variety of risky behaviors, they focus more broadly on college student behavior. Using a micro level analysis within the context of gender and aggression on the college campus, this thesis aims to explore the way …

A Recofigurable Tri-Band Interconnect For Future Network-On-Chip, Alexander Todd Dilello Jan 2014

A Recofigurable Tri-Band Interconnect For Future Network-On-Chip, Alexander Todd Dilello

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The scaling of CMOS feature sizes has yielded the capability of integrating heterogeneous intellectual properties (IPs) like graphics processing units (GPUs), digital signal processors (DSPs) and central processing units (CPUs) on a single die. The collection of multiple IPs on a single die presents a problem of reliable communication due to congestion. The infrastructure that facilitates and manages communication among IPs is referred to as a network-on-chip (NoC). Its ultimate goal should be low latency with negligible power and area consumption. Unfortunately, as CMOS feature sizes have been scaling smaller, this has exacerbated latency and signal degradation due to increasing …

Investigation Of Chemical And Physical Properties Of Carbon Nanotubes And Their Effects On Cell Biomechanics, Chenbo Dong Jan 2014

Investigation Of Chemical And Physical Properties Of Carbon Nanotubes And Their Effects On Cell Biomechanics, Chenbo Dong

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used for a variety of applications from nanocircuits, to hydrogen storage devices, and from designing optical fibers to forming conductive plastics. Recently, their functionalization with biomolecules led to exciting biological and biomedical applications in drug delivery or bioimaging. However, because of CNTs interactions with biological systems and their ability to translocate and persist into the circulatory and lymphatic systems and biological tissues, concerns about CNTs intrinsic toxicity have risen. It is thus necessary to develop and implement sensitive analysis technologies that allow investigation of CNTs toxicity upon uptake into a biological system.;This thesis provides a comprehensive …

Inhibition Of Arterial Kdr Channels By Dpo-1 And Activation Of Cloned Human Bk Channels By Bpa-Ms, Ibra S. Fancher Iv Jan 2014

Inhibition Of Arterial Kdr Channels By Dpo-1 And Activation Of Cloned Human Bk Channels By Bpa-Ms, Ibra S. Fancher Iv

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The following documents our attempt at answering a fundamental question in vascular smooth muscle: Which K+ channels control membrane potential, and thus, vascular tone? A number of groups have approached this question and great strides have been made; however, uncertainty remains as to which specific K+ channel(s) underlies this physiologically important current. Previous studies using nonselective pharmacological inhibitors of voltage-dependent K+ (KV) channels, particularly delayed rectifier K+ (KDR) channels, indicate membrane depolarization, Ca2+ influx, and vasoconstriction. Importantly, however, there are more than 40 genes known to encode KV channel subunits. We hypothesize that KDR channels composed of KV 1 subunits …

Comparing The Educational Preferences And Management Roles Of West Virginia's Male And Female Woodland Owners, Tiffany Fegel Jan 2014

Comparing The Educational Preferences And Management Roles Of West Virginia's Male And Female Woodland Owners, Tiffany Fegel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Non-industrial private forest owners (NIPF) make up the majority of the landscape in the eastern United States. Historically NIPF owners have been treated as a homogenous group. This however does not adequately represent the diversity of this population's ownership objectives, management concerns, and land values that are important in understanding how to tailor educational outreach programs to this group. Butler (2008) called for the need to separate this large population into smaller populations that are more homogenous in order to better reach them with educational programs. To answer this call we divided NIPF owners into two distinct groups, male and …

Evaluating The Inclusion Of Phytase Super-Dose In Various Broiler Diet Formulations And Novel Pellet Binders, John W. Boney Jan 2014

Evaluating The Inclusion Of Phytase Super-Dose In Various Broiler Diet Formulations And Novel Pellet Binders, John W. Boney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Grains commonly used in poultry diets contain phytic acid, a known anti-nutrient that binds dietary phosphorus rendering it unavailable for absorption also decreasing the digestibility of other nutrients. Phytic acid also increases mucin production and endogenous amino acid secretions causing a gut irritant effect which may decrease performance. An abundance of phytase literatures suggests that phytase enzymes can liberate bound phosphorus enhancing phytate phosphorus utilization and bone mineralization. Recently, the use of super-doses of phytase has been suggested to, not only liberate bound phosphorus, but to alleviate the gut irritant effect associated with phytate phosphorus. Therefore, an experiment was conducted …
