Investigating Women's Experiences Of Asthma Care In Pregnancy: A Qualitative Study., Chervonne Chamberlain, Graham R. Williamson, Beatrice Knight, Mark Daly, David M.G. Halpin

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Background : Most asthmatic women have normal pregnancies and complications are infrequent when their asthma is well-controlled. Symptom control and medical treatment are concerning to pregnant asthma suffers, as is the impact that their illness and treatment might have on their unborn baby. The aim was to investigate in a qualitative study the thoughts and feelings of women's experiences of asthma in pregnancy. Twenty-two women with asthma who had a pregnancy within two years were asked to participate. Seven women were interviewed when data saturation was achieved. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using the 'Framework' Method, independently analysed by two …

Developing And Testing The Standard Of Practice And Evaluation Of Critical-Care-Nursing Tool (Spect) For Critical Care Nursing Practice, Fenella J. Gill, Gavin D. Leslie, Carol Grech, Duncan Boldy, Jos M. Latour

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Background: Nurses working in critical care often undertake specialty education. There are no uniform practice outcomes for critical care programs, and consumer input to practice standards has been lacking. Methods: A structured multiphase project was undertaken to develop practice standards and an assessment tool informed by critical care nursing stakeholders as well as patients and families—the Standards of Practice and Evaluation of Critical-Care-Nursing Tool (SPECT). Results: Testing of the SPECT revealed adequate content validity index (CVI), domain CVI (range, 0.772 to 0.887), and statement CVI (range, 0.66 to 1.00). Reliability was adequate in terms of internal consistency (Cronbach’s α > 0.864) …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Role Of Residential Real Estate Investment In The Economic Development Of The Northeast Region Of The United States, Praveena Rajam Jayaraman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Residential real estate investment has been recognized as an agent of economic development since the 1970s because residential real estate investment is a major economic activity with large multiplier effects. Residential real estate improvement is also linked to many external social and economic benefits. Previous studies have examined the role of residential real estate in economic development through approaches such as the effects of employment and income, household saving, labor productivity, health productivity and growth from real estate investment, as well as home ownership effects. However, recent discussions about the relationships between residential real estate investment and economic development include …

An International Survey Of Aquaponics Practitioners, David C. Love, Jillian P. Fry, Laura Genello, Elizabeth S. Hill, J Adam Frederick, Ximin Li, Ken Semmens

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Aquaponics, a combination of fish farming and soilless plant farming, is growing in popularity and gaining attention as an important and potentially more sustainable method of food production. The aim of this study was to document and analyze the production methods, experiences, motivations, and demographics of aquaponics practitioners in the United States (US) and internationally. The survey was distributed online using a chain sampling method that relied on referrals from initial respondents, with 809 respondents meeting the inclusion criteria. The majority of respondents were from the US (80%), male (78%), and had at least a high school degree (91%). The …

Analyses Of Crime Patterns In Nibrs Data Based On A Novel Graph Theory Clustering Method: Virginia As A Case Study, Peixin Zhao, Majorie Darrah, Jim Nolan, Cun-Quan Zhang

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper suggests a novel clustering method for analyzing the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) data, which include the determination of correlation of different crime types, the development of a likelihood index for crimes to occur in a jurisdiction, and the clustering of jurisdictions based on crime type. The method was tested by using the 2005 assault data from 121 jurisdictions in Virginia as a test case. The analyses of these data show that some different crime types are correlated and some different crime parameters are correlated with different crime types. The analyses also show that certain jurisdictions within Virginia …

An Alternative To The Traditional Cold Pressor Test: The Cold Pressor Arm Wrap, Anthony J. Porcelli Jan 2014

An Alternative To The Traditional Cold Pressor Test: The Cold Pressor Arm Wrap, Anthony J. Porcelli

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Recently research on the relationship between stress and cognition, emotion, and behavior has greatly increased. These advances have yielded insights into important questions ranging from the nature of stress' influence on addiction1 to the role of stress in neural changes associated with alterations in decision-making2,3. As topics being examined by the field evolve, however, so too must the methodologies involved. In this article a practical and effective alternative to a classic stress induction technique, the cold pressor test (CPT), is presented: the cold pressor arm wrap (CPAW). CPT typically involves immersion of a participant's dominant hand in ice-cold …

Experiences Of Ex-Ex-Gay Individuals In Sexual Reorientation Therapy: Reasons For Seeking Treatment, Perceived Helpfulness And Harmfulness Of Treatment, And Post-Treatment Identification, Annesa Flentje, Nicholas C. Heck, Bryan N. Cochran Jan 2014

Experiences Of Ex-Ex-Gay Individuals In Sexual Reorientation Therapy: Reasons For Seeking Treatment, Perceived Helpfulness And Harmfulness Of Treatment, And Post-Treatment Identification, Annesa Flentje, Nicholas C. Heck, Bryan N. Cochran

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Therapy meant to change someone’s sexual orientation, or reorientation therapy, is still in practice despite statements from the major mental health organizations of its potential for harm. This qualitative study used an inductive content analysis strategy (Patton, 2002) to examine the experiences of thirty-eight individuals (31 males and seven females) who have been through a total of 113 episodes of reorientation therapy and currently identify as gay or lesbian. Religious beliefs were frequently cited as the reason for seeking reorientation therapy. Frequently endorsed themes of helpful components of reorientation therapy included connecting with others and feeling accepted. Harmful aspects of …

The Utility Of An Efficient Outcomes Assessment System At University Counseling Centers, S. Mark Kopta, Megan Lynn Petrik, Stephen M. Saunders, Michael Mond, Glenn Hirsch, Richard Kadison, Danielle Raymond

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Due to increased demands placed on university counseling centers (UCCs) in recent years, there is a need for these centers to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of their psychological services. Regularly monitoring client progress is one approach to increase the likelihood of positive clinical outcomes. This article describes the use of the Behavioral Health Measure–20 (BHM-20; Kopta & Lowry, 2002) in monitoring the progress of 13,803 clients at 23 UCCs across the United States from 2006–2011. Results show that the BHM-20, via the CelestHealth System–MH (CHS-MH), is an effective instrument for the electronic administration, scoring, and tracking of client progress. …

Parenting Style And Generativity Measured In College Students And Their Parents, Denise D. Guastello, Stephen J. Guastello, Jeralee M. Briggs Jan 2014

Parenting Style And Generativity Measured In College Students And Their Parents, Denise D. Guastello, Stephen J. Guastello, Jeralee M. Briggs

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The logical consistency between generativity and the authoritative parenting style led to the hypothesis that the two behavior patterns or orientations were related. Survey measurements of perceived parenting style (authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive) and generativity in 559 university students and their respective parents were compared. The authoritative parenting style correlated positively with generativity for both students and parents. Both students and mothers scored significantly higher on generativity than fathers, but no significant difference was found between students’ and mothers’ generativity. Hierarchical regression showed that students’ generativity was proximally related to their perceptions of their mothers’ authoritative parenting style, their mothers’ …

Personality Trait Theory And Multitasking Performance: Implications For Ergonomic Design, Andrea D. Guastello, Stephen J. Guastello, Denise D. Guastello Jan 2014

Personality Trait Theory And Multitasking Performance: Implications For Ergonomic Design, Andrea D. Guastello, Stephen J. Guastello, Denise D. Guastello

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Although system designers usually minimise the role of individual differences in operation, personality variables could explain differences in multitasking performance. A concomitant theoretical issue is whether primary or surface personality traits do a better job of predicting performance than the Five-Factor Model (FFM) or global traits. A sample of 174 undergraduates completed the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF), which was followed by a performance task. A computer-based task that measured simultaneous performance on an arithmetic task and a mental rotation task was used to measure multitasking performance; scores measured the percent accuracy. Primary traits for low emotional sensitivity and high …

Rehabilitating Concession Theory, Stefan Padfield

Oklahoma Law Review

In Citizens United v. FEC, a 5-4 majority of the Supreme Court ruled that “the Government cannot restrict political speech based on the speaker's corporate identity.” The decision remains controversial, with many arguing that the Court effectively overturned more than 100 years of precedent. I have previously argued that this decision turned on competing conceptions of the corporation, with the majority adopting a contractarian view while the dissent advanced a state concession view. However, the majority opinion was silent on the issue of corporate theory, and the dissent went so far as to expressly disavow any role for corporate …

Lessons From The Nba Lockout: Union Democracy, Public Support, And The Folly Of The National Basketball Players Association, Matthew Parlow Jan 2014

Lessons From The Nba Lockout: Union Democracy, Public Support, And The Folly Of The National Basketball Players Association, Matthew Parlow

Oklahoma Law Review

By most accounts, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA)—the union representing the players in the NBA—conceded a significant amount of money and other contractual terms in the new ten year collective bargaining agreement (2011 Agreement) that ended the 2011 NBA lockout. Player concessions were predictable because the NBA’s economic structure desperately needed an overhaul. The magnitude of such concessions, however, was startling. The substantial changes in the division of basketball-related income, contract lengths and amounts, salary cap provisions, and revenue sharing rendered the NBA lockout—and the resulting 2011 Agreement—a near-complete victory for the owners. Several interpretations have been offered to …

Student Reflections On Capstone Design: Experiences With Industry-Sponsored Projects, Judith Shaul Norback, Page F. Rhoad, Susannah Howe, Linda A. Riley

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Students are a primary stakeholder in engineering Capstone Design courses, but the student voice risks being overlooked in discussions of Capstone Design pedagogy and development. While many engineering programs collect student feedback and performance data for accreditation purposes, the engineering education and engineering design literature provide few resources that capture student perspectives on Capstone Design, especially across multiple institutions. The 2012 Capstone Design Conference hosted two well-attended panel sessions called ‘‘Student Reflections on Capstone Design’’ specifically to highlight student experiences in Capstone Design courses with industry-sponsored projects. Each panel featured four different panelists who had recently completed their Capstone Design …
