Epithelial Cells Are Active Participants In Vocal Fold Wound Healing: An In Vivo Animal Model Of Injury, Ciara Leydon, Mitsuyoshi Imaizumi, Rebecca S. Bartlett, Sarah F. Wang, Susan L. Thibeault

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Vocal fold epithelial cells likely play an important, yet currently poorly defined, role in healing following injury, irritation and inflammation. In the present study, we sought to identify a possible role for growth factors, epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGFβ1), in epithelial regeneration during wound healing as a necessary first step for uncovering potential signaling mechanisms of vocal fold wound repair and remodeling. Using a rat model, we created unilateral vocal fold injuries and examined the timeline for epithelial healing and regeneration during early and late stages of wound healing using immunohistochemistry (IHC). We observed time-dependent …

Style Shifting In First-Encounter Conversations Between Japanese Speakers, Kenichi Shinkuma Dec 2014

Style Shifting In First-Encounter Conversations Between Japanese Speakers, Kenichi Shinkuma

Dissertations and Theses

This study examines style shift between formal and informal styles in first- encounter conversations between Japanese native speakers and demonstrates how the speakers shifted the speech style in the context. Many researchers have studied this type of style shift and demonstrated that style shifts occur within a single speech context where social factors, such as differences in age, status, and formalness remain constant (e.g., Cook, 2008; Geyer, 2008; Ikuta, 1983; Maynard, 1991; Okamoto, 1999). This study contributed support to these previous studies. In this study, both quantitative and qualitative analyses focusing on Japanese native speakers' use of style shifting in …

Dynamics Of Propagation Of Premature Impulses In Structurally Remodeled Infarcted Myocardium: A Computational Analysis, Candido Cabo Dec 2014

Dynamics Of Propagation Of Premature Impulses In Structurally Remodeled Infarcted Myocardium: A Computational Analysis, Candido Cabo

Publications and Research

Initiation of cardiac arrhythmias typically follows one or more premature impulses either occurring spontaneously or applied externally. In this study, we characterize the dynamics of propagation of single (S2) and double premature impulses (S3), and the mechanisms of block of premature impulses at structural heterogeneities caused by remodeling of gap junctional conductance (Gj) in infarcted myocardium. Using a sub-cellular computer model of infarcted tissue, we found that |INa,max|, prematurity (coupling interval with the previous impulse), and conduction velocity (CV) of premature impulses change dynamically as they propagate away from the site of initiation. There are fundamental differences between the dynamics …

A Representation Of Robotic Behaviors Using Component Port Arbitration, A Paikan, G Metta, L Natale Dec 2014

A Representation Of Robotic Behaviors Using Component Port Arbitration, A Paikan, G Metta, L Natale

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Developing applications considering reactiveness, scalability and re-usability has always been at the center of attention of robotic researchers. Behavior-based architectures have been proposed as a programming paradigm to develop robust and complex behaviors as integration of simpler modules whose activities are directly modulated by sensory feedback or input from other models. The design of behavior based systems, however, becomes increasingly difficult as the complexity of the application grows. This article proposes an approach for modeling and coordinating behaviors in distributed architectures based on port arbitration which clearly separates representation of the behaviors from the composition of the software components. Therefore, …

Women In Kazakhstan: A Multifaceted Approach To Female Political Representation, Ashley Gaile Benedict Dec 2014

Women In Kazakhstan: A Multifaceted Approach To Female Political Representation, Ashley Gaile Benedict

Dissertations

This investigation focuses on two competing theories (historical institutionalism and social constructivism) and their explanatory value in regards to female political representation in Kazakhstan. Historical Institutionalism maintains that current institutional dynamics are constrained by past institutional formations, even when these past institutions are no longer relevant. Social Constructivism challenges this theory by upholding that institutions are culturally situated and a reflection of shared ideas rather than material forces as argued by historical institutionalism. Based on Hanna Pitkin’s (1967) four dimensions of representation (formal, descriptive, substantive, and symbolic), I examine how Kazakhstan’s Soviet past and its creation of a Kazakh ethnic-national …

Contributions Of Unique Active Site Residues Of Eukaryotic Udp-Galactopyranose Mutases To Substrate Recognition And Active Site Dynamics, Isabel Da Fonseca, Insaf A. Qureshi, Ritcha Mehra-Chaudhary, Karina Kizjakina, John J. Tanner, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

UDP-glucopyranose mutase (UGM) catalyzes the interconversion between UDP-galactopyranose and UDP-galactofuranose. Absent in humans, galactofuranose is found in bacterial and fungal cell walls and is a cell surface virulence factor in protozoan parasites. For these reasons, UGMs are targets for drug discovery. Here, we report a mutagenesis and structural study of the UGMs from Aspergillus fumigatus and Trypanosoma cruzi focused on active site residues that are conserved in eukaryotic UGMs but are absent or different in bacterial UGMs. Kinetic analysis of the variants F66A, Y104A, Q107A, N207A, and Y317A (A. fumigatus numbering) show decreases in kcat/KM values of 200-1000-fold for the …

A More Efficient Nonparametric Test Of Symmetry Based On Overlapping Coefficient, Hani M. Samawi, Robert L. Vogel Dec 2014

A More Efficient Nonparametric Test Of Symmetry Based On Overlapping Coefficient, Hani M. Samawi, Robert L. Vogel

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

In this paper we provide a more efficient nonparametric test of symmetry based on the empirical overlap coefficient using kernel density estimation applied to an extreme order statistics, namely extreme ranked set sampling. Our simulation investigation reveals that our proposed test of symmetry is at least as powerful as currently available tests of symmetry. Intensive simulation is conducted to examine the power of the proposed test. An illustration is provided using cardiac output and body weight of neonates in a neonatal intensive care unit.

Examining The Association Between Variability In Classroom Interaction Quality And Problem Behavior In Head Start Children, Veronica A. Fernandez

Open Access Dissertations

The present study examined the role of variability in observed classroom interaction quality (as assessed by the CLASS) in a sample of Head Start children (N = 965 children, within 54 classrooms and across 8 centers). First, the psychometric properties of the typically used classroom quality mean scores were examined to test whether the levels (mean differences) and rank ordering (reliability) of the scores varied across activity settings (Free Play, Whole Group, Small Group, Meals or Routines/Transitions). Then, variability scores were calculated for each of the three classroom quality domains to examine the unique association between variability in classroom interaction …

A Study And Performance Guide For "Gaspard De La Nuit" Emphasizing The Relationship Of Piano And Orchestral Renderings, Jamila Tekalli Dec 2014

A Study And Performance Guide For "Gaspard De La Nuit" Emphasizing The Relationship Of Piano And Orchestral Renderings, Jamila Tekalli

Open Access Dissertations

This essay is a study and performance guide for pianists that compares the orchestral and pianistic elements of Marius Constant’s "Gaspard de la nuit" for orchestra with Ravel’s "Gaspard de la nuit" for solo piano. The study of orchestration and instrumentation can shed light on the variable timbres, colors and different interpretations that pianists can utilize in their learning and interpreting of a piece. The effect of Constant’s choice of timbres, layering and the organization of the latter pushes the boundaries of what is on the written page. This study is based on studies of the historical, literary, and compositional …

Transferential Poetics, From Poe To Warhol, Adam Frank Dec 2014

Transferential Poetics, From Poe To Warhol, Adam Frank

Literature

Transferential Poetics presents a method for bringing theories of affect to the study of poetics. Informed by the thinking of Silvan Tomkins, Melanie Klein, and Wilfred Bion, it offers new interpretations of the poetics of four major American artists: Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, Gertrude Stein, and Andy Warhol. The author emphasizes the close, reflexive attention each of these artists pays to the transfer of feeling between text and reader, or composition and audience— their transferential poetics. The book’s historical route from Poe to Warhol culminates in television, a technology and cultural form that makes affect distinctly available to perception. …

Scheduling And Cooperative Control Of Electric Vehicles' Charging At Highway Service Stations, Florida Solar Energy Center, Azwirman Gusrialdi

FSEC Energy Research Center®

This is a re-print version of a publication for the 53rd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, Los Angeles, California, USA, December 15-17, 2014. Due to their limited ranges, electric vehicles (EVs)need to be periodically charged during their long-distance travels on a highway. Compared to the fossil-fuel powered vehicles, the charging of a single EV takes much more time(up to 30 mins versus 2 mins). As the number of EVs on highways increases, adequate charging infrastructure needs to be put in place. Nonetheless waiting times for EVs to get charged at service stations could still vary significantly unless an appropriate …

Class-Based Interference Management In Wireless Networks, Mohammad Arif Hossain, Mostafa Zaman Chowdhury, Shakil Ahmed, Yeong Min Jang Dec 2014

Class-Based Interference Management In Wireless Networks, Mohammad Arif Hossain, Mostafa Zaman Chowdhury, Shakil Ahmed, Yeong Min Jang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Research

Technological advancement has brought revolutionary change in the converged wireless networks. Due to the existence of different types of traffic, provisioning of Quality of Service (QoS) becomes a challenge in the wireless networks. In case of a congested network, resource allocation has emerged as an effective way to provide the excessive users with desirable QoS. Since QoS for non-real-time traffic are not as strict as for real-time traffic, the unoccupied channels of the adjacent cells can be assigned to the non-real-time traffic to retain QoS for real-time traffic. This results in the intensified bandwidth utilization as well as less interference …

Geochemistry Of Mineral Dust In The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys Region, Antarctica, Kelly M. Deuerling, Ethan Baxter, Jeremy Inglis, William Berry Lyons

Geography and Geology Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The transport and deposition of windblown materials are major processes in the ice-free areas of polar regions. The deposition of aeolian material provides connectivity within the ecosystems of these regions and is integral in understanding geochemical balances and exchanges between landscape units. We have analyzed materials deposited on glacier and permanent lake-ice surfaces as well as geomorphological features formed by aeolian processes in the largest ice-free area in Antarctica, the McMurdo Dry Valleys (~78 °S) in order to determine the source of this sediment. This presentation will focus on the materials collected from the glacier and lake surfaces. The bulk …

Poly-3-Hexylthiophene Nanorods As A Donor For Organic Photovoltaics, Dharmesh Patel

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Poly-3-hexylthiophene functionalized silsesquioxane nanorods (P3HT-NRs) were prepared by direct hydrolysis and condensation of P3HT-silane precursor using the modified Stöber method. The silane precursor was stirred in a mixture of two solvents in the presence of a base under room temperature for three different reaction times. The size, shape, and morphology of these novel nanostructures were visualized using the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The composition of the P3HT-NRs was confirmed by FTIR and its silane by proton NMR. Future work will focus on evaluating photovoltaic performance of these nanorods as a donor for organic photovoltaics.
