On Thin Ice? Domestic Violence Advocacy And Law Enforcement-Immigration Collaborations, Diana Rempe
On Thin Ice? Domestic Violence Advocacy And Law Enforcement-Immigration Collaborations, Diana Rempe
Dissertations and Theses
The public focus on domestic violence has been one of the most successful campaigns of the modern women's movement. This success was achieved in part through the creation of strategic alliances among agencies and organizations responding to partner violence. One of the most contested of these alliances involved partnering with the criminal justice system. While representing an advance in holding police accountable in protecting all citizens (Coker, 2006), this alliance has had problematic consequences, particularly as it has extended state power into the lives of women of color (e.g. Richie, 2005). This problem is exacerbated by new collaborations between law …

Facing Real-Time Identification In Mobile Apps & Wearable Computers, Yana Welinder
Facing Real-Time Identification In Mobile Apps & Wearable Computers, Yana Welinder
Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal
The use of face recognition technology in mobile apps and wearable computers challenges individuals’ ability to remain anonymous in public places. These apps can also link individuals’ offline activities to their online profiles, generating a digital paper trail of their every move. The ability to go off the radar allows for quiet reflection and daring experimentation—processes that are essential to a productive and democratic society. Given what we stand to lose, we ought to be cautious with groundbreaking technological progress. It does not mean that we have to move any slower, but we should think about potential consequences of the …

Paradoxes In Landscape Management And Water Conservation: Examining Neighborhood Norms And Institutional Forces, Kelli L. Larson, Jaleila Brumand
Paradoxes In Landscape Management And Water Conservation: Examining Neighborhood Norms And Institutional Forces, Kelli L. Larson, Jaleila Brumand
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
With heavy water use and other inputs, residential lawns and traditional yard features result in resource consumption, pollution, and changes in biodiversity. Several studies have examined the driving forces behind landscaping practices, but few have examined how social institutions affect residents’ decisions. We fill this gap by asking: how do formal and informal rules influence yard management, and how do these institutions interact in particular neighborhoods? Our interview-based case study is situated in Phoenix, Arizona, where outdoor irrigation constitutes a large portion of water demand. Overall, informal norms and customs at varying scales more strongly influence landscaping decisions than codified …

Responding To A Forest Catastrophe: The Emergence Of New Governance Arrangements In Southern California, Brian Peterson, Adam Wellstead
Responding To A Forest Catastrophe: The Emergence Of New Governance Arrangements In Southern California, Brian Peterson, Adam Wellstead
Department of Social Sciences Publications
The San Bernardino National Forest in southern California experienced an unprecedented bark beetle outbreak in the early 2000s. The outbreak, coupled with a looming threat of catastrophic wildfire, droughts, changing forest management priorities, and a legacy of poor forest management practices coalesced to create a challenge that existing institutions and management agencies could not address. In response, an interagency collaborative effort, the Mountain Area Taskforce (MAST), was initiated. Based on key informant interviews, this paper details how this new governance organization emerged and how it effectively addressed a landscape scale forest challenge. Forest governance analyses often focus attention on macroscales, …
