Digital Natives-Digital Immigrants Engaging The Google Generation, Michael Ross
Digital Natives-Digital Immigrants Engaging The Google Generation, Michael Ross
Forum Lectures
Our students are the "Digital Natives" in that they have grown up using the technology we as "Digital Immigrants" have considered tools. Tools which make us better teachers, learners and researchers. On the other hand our students do not think of the technology as tools but as an extension of their lives, using these technologies for personal interactions, group exploration and of course a source of content which we consider knowledge. In this digital immigrant presentation I try to highlight where our students are and suggest things we must do to help their learning.

Education is often the neglected “E” in the four E’s of safety. With changes to our transportation networks such as roundabouts and HAWK signals, the need for user education has never been greater. Learn about Drive Safe Michiana, a Michiana Area Council of Governments’ public safety program that targets these emerging safety topics in this presentation.

Purdue Road School
In 2012, OSHA revised its Hazard Communication Standard to be part of the Globally Harmonized System of Chemical Classification and Labeling. This revision includes new chemical labels and a standardized format for the new Safety Data Sheets (SDS). This revision will help employees with their knowledge and recognition of the hazards of the chemicals they are exposed to.

Mitigating Distracted Driving, Tim Cox, Kenny Kolberg
Purdue Road School
The scourge of distracted driving is not limited to any one demographic group or nation. It is global and affects every victim and victims’ families. This dire situation, caused largely by technology such as texting, requires technological solutions, including new traffic safety countermeasures. The transverse rumble strip, a countermeasure reinvented in 2009 as the temporary portable rumble strip, is already proving a significant, innovative addition to work zone safety processes and procedures. This device is designed to reduce accidents and save lives by alerting drivers to changing road conditions. Our presentation will show and discuss design criteria of the temporary …

Engaging Academics And Reimagining Scholarly Communication For The Public Good: A Report, Jessie Daniels, Polly Thistlethwaite
Engaging Academics And Reimagining Scholarly Communication For The Public Good: A Report, Jessie Daniels, Polly Thistlethwaite
Publications and Research
JustPublics@365 began as a discussion about how an interdisciplinary group of scholars at the Graduate Center, CUNY (located at 365 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan) might be able to bring their work together to foster greater social justice by sharing it in the public sphere.
We live in an era in which inequality is rampant. Media reports on inequality often gain little traction in a 24-hour news cycle dominated by the trivial. Activists work to address inequality in a myriad of ways, online and on the ground, but often lack connections to research or media that could further their cause. Key …

Shall Businesses Profit If Their Owners Lose Their Souls? Examining Whether Closely Held Corporations May Seek Exemptions From The Contraceptive Mandate, Christopher S. Ross
Fordham Law Review
May for–profit, secular corporations claim the protection of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA)?
This question is central to numerous lawsuits against the federal government in which business owners argue that certain regulations under the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act substantially burden the exercise of their religion. This Note examines the threshold hurdle that for–profit business owners must clear to successfully state a claim under RFRA: the question of whether the businesses are “persons” the statute protects. This is an issue of first impression for the U.S. Supreme Court, and it has split the circuit courts of appeal.

Probabilistic Modeling Of Lava Flows: A Hazard Assessment For The San Francisco Volcanic Field, Arizona, Aleeza Harburger
Probabilistic Modeling Of Lava Flows: A Hazard Assessment For The San Francisco Volcanic Field, Arizona, Aleeza Harburger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study serves as a first step towards a comprehensive hazard assessment for the San Francisco volcanic field in northern Arizona, which can be applied to local response plans and educational initiatives. The primary goal of this thesis is to resolve the conditional probability that, given a lava flow effusing from a new vent in the San Francisco volcanic field, it will inundate the city limits of Flagstaff. The spatial distribution of vents within the San Francisco volcanic field was analyzed in order to execute a lava flow simulation to determine the inundation hazard to Flagstaff. The Gaussian kernel function …
