Structural Health Monitoring Of An In-Service Highway Bridge With Uncertainties, Jingcheng Li May 2014

Structural Health Monitoring Of An In-Service Highway Bridge With Uncertainties, Jingcheng Li

Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, structural health monitoring (SHM) has become increasingly important for the assessment and maintenance of aging infrastructure. However, some challenges remain in applying SHM in the field. For example, high cost of wired sensors limits the SHM application to small number of structures within a network. Wireless smart sensors (WSSs), on the other hand, provide a versatile, cost-effective method of monitoring dynamic conditions of structures in near real-time. While the wireless sensor technology has been available for nearly a decade, there have been limited numbers of full-scale applications due to its intrinsic limitations such as power supply issue. …

Academic Service-Learning’S Impact On Students’ Social Capital, Megan Jean Anderson May 2014

Academic Service-Learning’S Impact On Students’ Social Capital, Megan Jean Anderson

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines whether there is a relationship between social capital and participation in academic service-learning courses within higher education. Through designing, implementing, and analyzing a survey which was given to students enrolled in courses with an academic service-learning component at Eastern Michigan University (n=127), the role between these two variables was tested. Social capital was measured through the total number of relationships formed at participants’ academic service learning site, whether these relationships were strong or weak ties; the frequency of interaction with said ties; and individuals who could be used as a reference. Results suggest the number of individuals …

Got Milk?: Exploring The Truth Behind America’S Drink And Nature’S Perfect Food, Andora Leung May 2014

Got Milk?: Exploring The Truth Behind America’S Drink And Nature’S Perfect Food, Andora Leung

2014 Student Theses

The product of milk is a staple to American culture and diet. Described as the “perfect food,” this notion has been ingrained through decades of misleading information as well as persuasive marketing and advertisement implemented by government officials and industry leaders. However as health risk rise, questions concerning the validity of milk calorie and nutritional value, the use of bovine growth hormone (rBGH) and subtherapeutic antibiotics rise as well. In my thesis paper, I will study the history of the dairy industry and how their agenda quickly transitioned from the benefit of the customer to the benefit of the industry. …

Restructuring Justice: Moving Towards Gender-Responsive Programming And Alternatives To Incarceration For Non-Violent Female Offenders, Julia Ellouise Bonnell May 2014

Restructuring Justice: Moving Towards Gender-Responsive Programming And Alternatives To Incarceration For Non-Violent Female Offenders, Julia Ellouise Bonnell

Honors Theses

The United States¿ Federal and State laws differentiate between acceptable (or, legal) and unacceptable (illegal) behavior by prescribing restrictive punishment to citizens and/or groups that violate these established rules. These regulations are written to treat every person equally and to fairly serve justice; furthermore, the sanctions placed on offenders seek to reform illegal behavior through limitations on freedoms and rehabilitative programs. Despite the effort to treat all offenders fairly regardless of social identity categories (e.g., sex, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, ability, and gender and sexual orientation) and to humanely eliminate illegal behavior, the American penal system perpetuates de facto …

Health-Related Quality Of Life In Children With Biliary Atresia, S.Y. Ong, R.T. Ng, K.M. Khoh, W.S. Lee May 2014

Health-Related Quality Of Life In Children With Biliary Atresia, S.Y. Ong, R.T. Ng, K.M. Khoh, W.S. Lee

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

BACKGROUND: In children with biliary atresia (BA) who did not have surgery or in those who had an unsuccessful surgery, survival beyond three years of age is rare without liver transplantation (LT). Children with BA who had a successful surgery require long term follow up to detect complications associated with chronic liver disease (CLD). OBJECTIVE: We investigated the quality of life (QoL) in children with BA, comparing it with children who have other forms of CLD, and with normal healthy children. DESIGN/METHODS: Children with BA and other CLD, aged between 2 to 18 years old, who were followed up in …

Design And Implementation Of A Sustainable, University-Based, Emergency Medical Response Service, Octavia A. Mandel Struve May 2014

Design And Implementation Of A Sustainable, University-Based, Emergency Medical Response Service, Octavia A. Mandel Struve

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Collegiate-based emergency medical services (EMS), designed primarily to provide pre-hospital basic life support and emergency services, are venues by which nurses and other healthcare professionals, with an understanding of community health and social network issues, can maximize health promotion objectives for university and college campus communities. These EMS systems also provide vital support to city and county emergency services and promote positive community relationships with neighboring areas. They can provide excellent opportunities for students to develop critical skills for success in the healthcare and business world. The sustainability and vibrancy of collegiate-based EMS systems are primarily related to impact, benefit …

From Punishment To Treatment: A Providers’ Perspective On The Implementation Of 2009 Rockefeller Drug Law Reforms In New York, Robert Riggs, Jim Parsons, Qing Wei, Ernest Drucker May 2014

From Punishment To Treatment: A Providers’ Perspective On The Implementation Of 2009 Rockefeller Drug Law Reforms In New York, Robert Riggs, Jim Parsons, Qing Wei, Ernest Drucker

Publications and Research

Background: In 2009, New York reformed its “Rockefeller Drug Laws”, terminating mandatory imprisonment for many drug charges and expanding the availability of treatment alternatives to incarceration. The reforms occurred in an environment characterized by high incarceration rates, racial/ethnic disparities in drug convictions and incarceration rates, and expanded use of alternatives to incarceration. Early administrative data show a large impact on the criminal justice system. Few studies have considered the reforms from the providers’ perspective and none have sought to understand how providers are experiencing the reforms in their everyday practice.

Methods: To provide a providers’ perspective, we use a qualitative, …
