Living the Mission: EIU NCA Self Study Report 2014
Eastern Illinois State Normal School was founded in 1895. It became, successively, Eastern Illinois State Teachers College (1921), Eastern Illinois State College (1947), and Eastern Illinois University (1957). The university was first accredited by the North Central Association in 1915; in 1920, it began offering the Bachelor of Education degree. In 1953, the university received accreditation as a master's degree-granting institution; in 1954, its mission was expanded to include Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programs. In 1965, it was granted preliminary accreditation for a six-year program leading to a Certificate of Advanced Study. At that time, Eastern …

Integrating Factors That Predict Energy Conservation: The Theory Of Planned Behavior And Beliefs About Climate Change, Catherine A. Clement, Jaime B. Henning, Richard Osbaldiston
Integrating Factors That Predict Energy Conservation: The Theory Of Planned Behavior And Beliefs About Climate Change, Catherine A. Clement, Jaime B. Henning, Richard Osbaldiston
Psychology Faculty and Staff Research
A survey of college students was used to examine predictors of four types of energy conservation behavior. Our proposed predictors were derived from Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and from problem awareness variables (environmental concern, and knowledge and beliefs about global warming) thought to have indirect effects on conservation via TPB constructs. TPB constructs were significant direct predictors of target behaviors. Perceived behavioral control (PBC) was the strongest and most consistent predictor, predicting all four behaviors, followed by perceived worth (attitude), predicting three behaviors. TPB variables mediated the effects of either environmental concern or beliefs about the consequences of …

Addams On Cultural Pluralism, European Immigrants, And African Americans, Marilyn Fischer
Addams On Cultural Pluralism, European Immigrants, And African Americans, Marilyn Fischer
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In this paper, I will restrict the discussion to Addams’s writings during the twentieth century’s first decade, when she developed most of her thinking on cultural pluralism. By 1910, Dewey had not yet moved to cultural pluralism, Boas’s cultural relativism had not yet penetrated the intellectual world, and Mendelian genetics had not yet replaced Lamarckian assumptions regarding heredity. The Great War was yet to shatter illusions about Western civilization’s strength and rightness.

“All Women Talk”- A Study Of Beauty And Female Identity In Senegalese Culture, Arden Haselmann
“All Women Talk”- A Study Of Beauty And Female Identity In Senegalese Culture, Arden Haselmann
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The idea of Beauty is defined cross culturally, and is rooted in surrounding environment and larger values presented in the community. This study explores collective and individual understandings of beauty and its relationship to female identity. My hope with this research was to explore various attitudes that existed around beauty and understanding the motivations behind why Senegalese women are willing to put so much effort in altering their physical appearance in such extreme ways.
How Secular Should Democracy Be? A Cross-Disciplinary Study Of Catholicism And Islam In Promoting Public Reason, David Ingram, David Ingram
How Secular Should Democracy Be? A Cross-Disciplinary Study Of Catholicism And Islam In Promoting Public Reason, David Ingram, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
I argue that the same factors (strategic and principled) that motivated Catholicism to champion liberal democracy are the same that motivate 21st Century Islam to do the same. I defend this claim by linking political liberalism to democratic secularism. Distinguishing institutional, political, and epistemic dimensions of democratic secularism, I show that moderate forms of political and epistemic secularism are most conducive to fostering the kind of public reasoning essential to democratic legitimacy. This demonstration draws upon the ambivalent impact of Indonesia’s Islamic parties in advancing universal social justice aims as against more sectarian policies.

Epistemic Uncertainty Quantification In Scientific Models, Xiaoxiao Chen
Epistemic Uncertainty Quantification In Scientific Models, Xiaoxiao Chen
Open Access Dissertations
In the field of uncertainty quantification (UQ), epistemic uncertainty often refers to the kind of uncertainty whose complete probabilistic description is not available, largely due to our lack of knowledge about the uncertainty. Quantification of the impacts of epistemic uncertainty is naturally difficult, because most of the existing stochastic tools rely on the specification of the probability distributions and thus do not readily apply to epistemic uncertainty. And there have been few studies and methods to deal with epistemic uncertainty. A recent work can be found in [J. Jakeman, M. Eldred, D. Xiu, Numerical approach for quantification of epistemic uncertainty, …

Importance Of School Library Programs, Cynthia Strong
Importance Of School Library Programs, Cynthia Strong
SPU Works
Within the discipline of library science, over 20 research studies have been done in the United States attesting to how high-quality school library programs contribute to improved academic achievement. On the other hand, in the fields of education, school counseling, administration, and school leadership, and so on, there is a dearth of scholarship and recognition of the positive impact librarians and library media program have on student success. This conceptual paper first presents an overview of the empirical research on school library programs and the positive impact they have on the academic achievement of students in the United States. Second, …

Dipl 6000 Introduction To International Relations Theory And Diplomacy, Brian K. Muzas Phd
Diplomacy Syllabi
This course is designed to introduce students to the major theoretical traditions of international relations and diplomacy. We will begin with a critical investigation of the competing assumptions and concepts that form the heart of various or maybe traditional theoretical approaches to the study of world politics. As a class we will discuss the key actors, processes, and variables highlighted by each theory, and assess their relative strengths and weaknesses. Throughout this investigation, we will consider various theoretical tradeoffs relating to the issues such as levels of analysis, parsimony versus accuracy, and the types of research questions being addressed.

The Illusion Of Autonomy In Women's Medical Decision-Making, Jamie R. Abrams
The Illusion Of Autonomy In Women's Medical Decision-Making, Jamie R. Abrams
Florida State University Law Review
This Article considers why there is not more conflict between women and their doctors in obstetric decision-making. While patients in every other medical context have complete autonomy to refuse treatment against medical advice, elect high-risk courses of action, and prioritize their own interests above any other decision-making metric, childbirth is viewed anomalously because of the duty to the fetus that the state and the doctor owe at birth. Many feminist scholars have analyzed the complex resolution of these conflicts when they arise, particularly when the state threatens to intervene to override the birthing woman’s autonomy.
This Article instead considers the …

Waldenfels’ Responsive Phenomenology Of The Alien: An Introduction, Norm Friesen
Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Merleau-Ponty has famously said of phenomenological reflection that it “steps back to watch the forms of transcendence fly up like sparks from a fire; it slackens the intentional threads which attach us to the world and thus brings them to our notice” (1962, p. xiii) Bernhard Waldenfels, whose notion of responsivity forms the focus of this reflective review, studied under Merleau-Ponty at the Collège de France in the early 1960s. Waldenfels has characterized his own work as “a further development of the existential-structural phenomenology in Merleau-Ponty’s sense” (1997, p. xvii). At the same time, Waldenfels diverges in fundamental ways from …

How do African Immigrant women interact with the Worcester healthcare system during pregnancy?
This study follows stories told by mostly Ghanaian women living in Worcester in order to understand their challenges in the maternal healthcare system. The researchers seek to understand cultural differences, socio-economic standing and communication challenges that have led to these women having one of the highest infant mortality rates in Worcester. The authors found that their interviews with healthcare providers shed the most light on what discrepancies exist between how the health care providers understand how this population experiences birth opposed to how these women experience birth …

Sport Website Interactivity Effects: An Analysis Of The Relationships Between Interactivity, Attitudes, And Intentions To Revisit, Young Ik Suh, Taesoo Ahn, Paul M. Pedersen
Sport Management Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine the theoretical relationships between three dimensions of interactivity (i.e., active user control, two-way communication, and real-time information) and website effectiveness variables (i.e., attitudes toward the sport website and intentions to revisit). In addition, this study compared the proposed interactivity model with a rival model to identify the role of attitude as a mediating factor. The Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis with a convenience sample of 235 participants revealed that the proposed interactivity model performed better and was more parsimonious than the rival model. The results also indicated that the variable relating to …
