Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection Among Women, Stacy Hudepohl Oct 2014

Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection Among Women, Stacy Hudepohl

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

It has been noted that women often place their own health care on the bottom of their priority lists. Many times, they ignore simple pain and dismiss symptoms that may be troubling to health care providers. Health care providers especially to young women may dismiss complaints of chest pain as heartburn or anxiety. Changes seen in pregnancy and with menses can mimic some of these same complaints. As both an female professional in health care and as a patient it is very easy to get busy with the day and not recognize simple signs and symptoms that may lead to …

Trafficking In Human Beings In The European Union: Gender, Sexual Exploitation, And Digital Communication Technologies, Donna M. Hughes

Gender and Women's Studies Faculty Publications

In this article, the intersection of gender, trafficking for sexual exploitation, and use of digital communication technologies are analyzed based on data from the European Union (EU). Over the past two decades, an increase in trafficking in human beings in the EU has been accompanied by an increase in the development and availability of digital communication technologies. The first statistical analysis of trafficking in human beings (2008-2010) carried out by the European Commission found 23,632 victims of human trafficking in the reporting member states. Eighty percent of victims were women and girls; 20% were men and boys. The majority of …

Implementing The Hmong Culture Into Classrooms, Chee Vang Oct 2014

Implementing The Hmong Culture Into Classrooms, Chee Vang

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The purpose of this capstone was to raise awareness of the importance of implementing the Hmong culture into classrooms, especially due to many Hmong students’ lack of academic performance in schools. Hmong students have suffered tremendously in school due to language barriers and culture shock. The research involved interviewing a sample of Fresno County teachers and students. Fresno has the largest population of Hmong people in California. The results suggest that creating a diverse and comfortable environment for Hmong students requires incorporating their culture into classrooms by using icebreakers or teaching a whole unit about the Hmong people. This will …

Reflections On Literature : East And West, Joseph Tse-Hei Lee, Ronald K. Frank, Ying Wang, Hongling Lyu, Li Po

Global Asia Journal

This publication has three thematic essays written by professors from Pace University and Nanjing Normal University that discuss the similarities and differences between Chinese and western literature. Hongling Lyu identifies certain aesthetic differences between Chinese and western literature, and explains these divergences from a cross-cultural perspective. Li Po presents an overview of the aesthetics of classical literature. Ying Wang draws on her expertise in French literature and feminist studies to discuss the challenge of reading Chinese literature from the historical, cross-cultural, and feminist perspectives. These essays challenge us to go beyond the conventional East-and-West divide with its predictable polarities, and …

Altruism, Commitment, And Leadership In High School Mentors, Rob Mkinney, Heidi A. Larson, J. Adriane Moody, Margaret F. Schwartzkopf, Aaron D. Hale, Steven R. Conn

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

This study investigated the effects of mentoring on selected attributes among high school mentors. Three attributes were explored: altruism, commitment to school, and student leadership. Seventy-four high school juniors and seniors participated as mentors to high school freshmen students. Mentors participated in a leadership training program prior to beginning their mentoring activities. Pre- and post-test measures of the three attributes were administered. Results showed no significant increase in altruism or commitment scores. Unexpectedly, the mentoring experience produced a significant decrease in the perception of leadership scores. Implications for implementing a mentoring program in a high school setting are discussed.

An Analysis Of Programs To Engage At-Risk Juveniles For The Clarksdale Boys Of Color Initiative, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project

Delta Directions: Publications

This report aims to assist the Clarksdale Boys of Color Initiative (CBCI) in the development and implementation of programs and strategies to serve at-risk youth in Clarksdale, Mississippi. While this report was created specifically to assist CBCI, this report also aspires to be helpful to programs that are doing similar work in different communities, specifically rural areas within the Mississippi Delta Region (“the Delta). The burgeoning problems facing young men from minority backgrounds are not unique to the Delta, and thus the solutions outlined in this report should be useful to communities around the country working to fight these problems.

Women In The Crowd Of Corporate Directors: Following, Walking Alone, And Meaningfully Contributing, Joan Macleod Heminway Oct 2014

Women In The Crowd Of Corporate Directors: Following, Walking Alone, And Meaningfully Contributing, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

With the thought that new perspectives often can be helpful in addressing long-standing unresolved questions, this article approaches an analysis of women’s roles on corporate boards of directors from the standpoint of crowd theory. Crowd theory — in reality, a group of theories — explains the behavior of people in crowds. Specifically, this article describes theories of the crowd from social psychology and applies them to the literature on female corporate directors, looking at the effects on both women as crowd members and boards as decision-making crowds.

Unfortunately, while the crowd theory perspective provides some insights, they are not altogether …

The Evolution Of Copulation Frequency And The Mechanisms Of Reproduction In Male Anolis Lizards, Michele A. Johnson, Maria Veronica Lopez, Tara K. Whittle, Bonnie K. Kircher, A K. Dill, Divina Varghese, J. Wade Oct 2014

Wade

Biology Faculty Research

The evolution of many morphological structures is associated with the behavioral context of their use, particularly for structures involved in copulation. Yet, few studies have considered evolutionary relationships among the integrated suite of structures associated with male reproduction. In this study, we examined nine species of lizards in the genus Anolis to determine whether larger copulatory morphologies and higher potential for copulatory muscle performance evolved in association with higher copulation rates. In 10–12 adult males of each species, we measured the size of the hemipenes and related muscles, the seminiferous tubules in the testes, and the renal sex segments in …

Modern Practices Of Traditional Dance In Cameroon: The Influences Of Colonization And Globalization, Khalilah Lushiku Oct 2014

Modern Practices Of Traditional Dance In Cameroon: The Influences Of Colonization And Globalization, Khalilah Lushiku

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The study was originally one of the changing practices of traditional dance in Cameroon, and the causes behind the shift from purposeful dances with relevance to everyday life, to dances primarily meant for entertainment and exposition. What emerged was the somewhat ironic realization that the current manifestations of traditional dance cannot be separated from a discussion of modernity and Cameroon’s socio-cultural development.

The changing practices of traditional dance in Cameroon compose a smaller piece of the larger puzzle of the ways in which Cameroonian culture is forced to adapt itself to the external influences of the times, while still attempting …
