Cancer Survivorship Care: An Emphasis On Rehabilitation Needs In Maine, Miranda Carlson, Nicole Christine, Charles Dowd, Cassandra Dawley, Irina Fedulow, Lisa Gerhardt, Erin Pike, Kaitlin Powers, Angela Serrani

Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Papers

The first section of this report addresses the evidence of causation concerning impairments developed as a result of a cancer diagnosis and cancer treatment. The second section investigates the evidence regarding rehabilitation and physical activity as an effective intervention in the prevention and treatment of impairments from cancer diagnosis and cancer treatment. The third section discusses the underlying behavioral change theory for incorporation of our Cancer Survivorship Rehabilitation Algorithm (Appendix 1), which details our proposed use of rehabilitation and wellness services in the continuum of cancer care and includes an outline for a survivorship care plan. This section also discusses …

Identity Crisis: Making Sense Of Post-Apartheid Relationships Between Whiteness And Antiracism, Justin Bradshaw Oct 2014

Identity Crisis: Making Sense Of Post-Apartheid Relationships Between Whiteness And Antiracism, Justin Bradshaw

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This independent study project sought to explore white South African antiracist identities during post-apartheid South Africa and how the ways of making meaning of an antiracist identity contribute to and reflect the conceptual frameworks that already exist. Furthermore, this study intended to illuminate how white identifying antiracist persons in post-apartheid South Africa can be allies in the struggle for a more racially equitable society. The frameworks involved in this project are the academic study of whiteness, critical race theory, and antiracism.

In this study the researcher interviewed four white South Africans who, in one way or another, are intellectually involved …

The Language Of Mens Rea, Matthew R. Ginther, Francis X. Shen, Richard J. Bonnie, Morris B. Hoffman, Owen D. Jones, Rene Marois, Kenneth W. Simons

Vanderbilt Law Review

To be guilty of a crime, generally one must commit a bad act while in a culpable state of mind. But the language used to define, partition, and communicate the variety of culpable mental states (in Latin, mens rea) is crucially important. For depending on the mental state that juries attribute to him, a defendant can be convicted-for the very same act and the very same consequence-of different crimes, each with different sentences.

The influential Model Penal Code ("MPC") of 1962 divided culpable mental states into four now-familiar kinds: purposeful, knowing, reckless, and negligent.' Both before the MPC and since, …

The Clinical Psychology Training Program At The University Of Nebraska–Lincoln, David J. Hansen, Timothy D. Nelson, David Dilillo, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The Clinical Psychology Training Program (CPTP) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1948, the first year any programs were accredited. The CPTP’s history and approach to training through the years have been described in numerous articles (DiLillo & McChargue, 2007; Hargrove, 1991; Hargrove & Howe, 1981; Hargrove & Spaulding, 1988; Hope, Hansen, & Cole, 1994; Howe, 1974; Howe & Neimeyer, 1979; Jones & Levine, 1963; Rivers & Cole, 1976). Our program was historically described as a “Community-Clinical” psychology training program, and this focus on understanding and enhancing well-being at …

Examination Of Tinnitus: Study Of Synapses On Fusiform Cells In The Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus, Stephanie Bouanak Oct 2014

Examination Of Tinnitus: Study Of Synapses On Fusiform Cells In The Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus, Stephanie Bouanak

Senior Honors Projects

The dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) is a multimodal processing station found at the junction of the auditory nerve and brainstem medulla. Tinnitus-induced neuronal hyperactivity has been observed in the DCN and, thus, suggested to be the lowest region of the auditory nerve with such hyperactivity. The main integrative units of the DCN are the fusiform cells, receiving and processing inputs from auditory sources before transmitting information to higher auditory pathways. Neural hyperactivity is induced in fusiform cells of the DCN following intense sound exposure. Researchers suggest that fusiform cells may be implicated as major generators of noise-induced tinnitus. Despite previous …

Habitat Associations And Predictive Distribution Models Of Commercially Important Rockfish Species Along California's Central Coast, Heather Marie Bolton Oct 2014

Habitat Associations And Predictive Distribution Models Of Commercially Important Rockfish Species Along California's Central Coast, Heather Marie Bolton

SNS Master's Theses

While commercially important, the red rockfish complex, Vermilion Rockfish (Sebastes miniatus), Canary Rockfish (Sebastes pinniger) and Yelloweye Rockfish (Sebastes ruberrimus), is emblematic of our limited knowledge of the distribution and habitat associations of ecologically and economically important fishes along California’s central coast. We used videographic and photographic imagery from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), coupled with high resolution multibeam derived maps of the seafloor to determine a) the fine scale habitat associations of red rockfishes along California’s central coast, and b) the potential distribution of small Canary Rockfish (10-40 centimeters TL) beyond surveyed areas using predictive species-specific distribution models. Across …

Furthering Liberal Arts In Indonesian Higher Education, Judith Puncochar Oct 2014

Furthering Liberal Arts In Indonesian Higher Education, Judith Puncochar

Conference Presentations

The study of Liberal Arts is absent in Indonesian higher education. A strong participatory democracy may require skills engendered by a rigorous study of the liberal arts. When I arrived in Indonesia in August 2014, I found a vibrant Indonesian democracy and smart, eager-to-learn university students who were unsatisfied with MKDU (General Education) classes. A strong democracy requires skills engendered by a rigorous study of Liberal Arts. Restructuring the MKDU classes as Liberal Arts classes using active, student-centered instruction should lead to higher levels of critical thinking in college students, higher quality of teachers in local schools, and better citizenship …

Miller V. Alabama: Something Unconsitutional Now Was Equally Unconstitutional Then, W. Patrick Conlon Oct 2014

Miller V. Alabama: Something Unconsitutional Now Was Equally Unconstitutional Then, W. Patrick Conlon

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform Caveat

In June 2012, the United States Supreme Court found mandatory life-without-parole sentences against juvenile offenders unconstitutional in Miller v. Alabama. The Court determined that because children possess “immaturity, impetuosity, and [fail] to appreciate risks and consequences,” they are fundamentally different than adults. Although Miller invalidated every juvenile mandatory life-without-parole (JMLWOP) statute across the United States, there is no clear indication regarding whether Miller retroactively applies to juveniles sentenced to mandatory life-without-parole before the Court’s ruling. As a result, states are split on whether to apply Miller retroactively. Fifteen states have yet to decide whether Miller applies retroactively, while several other …
