The Anchor, Volume 128.08: October 29, 2014, Hope College

The Anchor: 2014

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Of The Prefrontal Cortex In Awake Nonhuman Primates Evokes A Polysynaptic Neck Muscle Response That Reflects Oculomotor Activity At The Time Of Stimulation., Chao Gu, Brian D Corneil

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has emerged as an important technique in cognitive neuroscience, permitting causal inferences about the contribution of a given brain area to behavior. Despite widespread use, exactly how TMS influences neural activity throughout an interconnected network, and how such influences ultimately change behavior, remain unclear. The oculomotor system of nonhuman primates (NHPs) offers a potential animal model to bridge this gap. Here, based on results suggesting that neck muscle activity provides a sensitive indicator of oculomotor activation, we show that single pulses of TMS over the frontal eye fields (FEFs) in awake NHPs evoked rapid (within ∼25 …

An Investigation Of Methodologies For Determining Walkability And Its Association With Socio-Demographics: An Application To The Tampa - St. Petersburg Urbanized Area, Oana A. Mckinney

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Walkability research has broadened in the past few years, being performed by researchers in different fields such as urban planning, public health, and transportation planning. Definitions of walkability and methods of operationalizing the concept vary widely. Since the results of studies that incorporate walkability may well have policy implications, it is important to consider the potential impacts of different definitions and methods of measurement.

This thesis investigates to what extent walkability indices may differ when either the composition of the indices is changed or when different quantitative methods of standardization are used to summarize their component measures. The association of …

Creating A Mythopoeic Graphic Novel To Expand Self-Understanding, Luis De La Lama Oct 2014

Creating A Mythopoeic Graphic Novel To Expand Self-Understanding, Luis De La Lama

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This is a study about how I produced a graphic novel to introduce a model of the self that is informed by complexity theory to an audience of comic book and graphic novel enthusiasts. Because this model of the self has the potential to preserve, extend, and/or reinforce character strengths that are operationalized as virtuous behavior, and that also function as inner resources in times of adversity, my study explores storytelling by sequential art as a communication method that some counselors and educators might use to counsel and educate large segments of popular culture. Also, more generally, I explore the …

Functional Behavioral Analysis And Social Scripting For The Older Patient With Schizophrenia: A Staff Development Program, Laura Markwick, Charlene Smith, Diane J. Mick

Nursing Faculty/Staff Publications

Executive functioning is the ability to plan, strategize, organize, and focus on details. Impaired executive functioning plays a significant role in behavior disturbances. Lack of inhibition, impaired abstract reasoning, thought perseverance, rigidity in routine, and lack of insight disrupt social skills and daily life. Autism and schizophrenia present some similar behaviors, including impaired executive functioning, often resulting in pharmacological management as many healthcare professionals receive limited training in executive functioning. Non-pharmacological tools used in autism for behavior management include functional behavioral analysis and social scripting, which help to identify causes of behavior and teach more appropriate behavioral responses. Described here …

The Impact Of Resource Allocation On Graduation Rates, Robert L. Miller

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Higher Education is currently facing challenges from a variety of forces; a stagnant economy, shifting student demographics, increased accountability and need for the demonstration of value. Colleges and universities are being forced to function more efficiently and at the same time improve student outcomes. One major outcome that has come under increased scrutiny is student graduation rate. With revenue at many institutions expected to remain flat or in some cases decline over the next several years institutions must find a way to strategically allocate their funds so as to positively impacts student outcomes, in this instance graduation rate. While studies …

Cultural Immersion In Counselor Education In The United States: A Quasi Experimental Study, Sejal Mehta Barden, Keith Mobley, Laura Shannonhouse

Journal for International Counselor Education

Researchers (e.g., Arthur & Achenbach, 2002; DeRicco & Sciarra, 2005; Kim & Lyons, 2003; Rundstrom, 2005) examining the development of multicultural counseling competence have argued that contact and exposure with people from diverse backgrounds through cultural immersion develops higher degrees of cultural empathy, increased awareness, self-efficacy and competence when compared to primarily didactic instruction. The purpose of this study was to employ a quasi-experimental design to investigate the differences between counselor education students who participated in a cultural immersion experience (n = 19) and counselor education students who did not immerse (n = 18). Results and implications for future research …

High And Low Computer Self-Efficacy Groups And Their Learning Behavior From Self-Regulated Learning Perspective While Engaged In Interactive Learning Modules, Harry B. Santoso, Oenardi Lawanto, Kurt Becker, Ning Fang, Edward M. Reeve

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The purpose of this research was to investigate high school students’ computer self-efficacy (CSE) and learning behavior in a selfregulated learning (SRL) framework while utilizing an interactive learning module. The researcher hypothesizes that CSE is reflected on cognitive actions and metacognitive strategies while the students are engaged with interactive learning modules. Two research questions guided this research: (1) how is students’ CSE while engaged in interactive learning modules? and (2) how do high and low CSE groups plan and monitor their cognitive action, and regulate their monitoring strategies based on their CSE level? The research used a mixedmethods approach to …

Gender Differences In The Consistency Of Middle School Students’ Interest In Engineering And Science Careers, Marsha Ing, Pamela R. Aschbacher, Sherry M. Tsai

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

This longitudinal study analyzes survey responses in seventh, eighth, and ninth grade from diverse public school students (n = 482) to explore gender differences in engineering and science career preferences. Females were far more likely to express interest in a science career (31%) than an engineering career (13%), while the reverse was true for males (58% in engineering, 39% in science). After controlling for student and school demographic characteristics, females were as consistent as males in their science career interests during the three years of the study but less consistent in their engineering career interests. Knowing an engineer significantly …
