Outed At School: Student Privacy Rights And Preventing Unwanted Disclosures Of Sexual Orientation, Evan Ettinghoff Oct 2014

Outed At School: Student Privacy Rights And Preventing Unwanted Disclosures Of Sexual Orientation, Evan Ettinghoff

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) individuals often identify their sexual orientation during their formative school years. During this time, they make important decisions about whether they will come out, to whom, and under what circumstances. However, some school officials have taken matters into their own hands, disclosing information about a student’s sexual orientation to parents or family members without the student’s permission, and without considering the student’s well-being and potential consequences at home. This Note explores a student’s constitutional right to privacy in their sexual orientation. It begins by examining the unique problems LGBTQ youth encounter while developing …

Bayard Rustin: An Annotated Bibliography Of Materials Relating To Rustin As A Quaker And Peace Activist, Buzz Haughton Oct 2014

Bayard Rustin: An Annotated Bibliography Of Materials Relating To Rustin As A Quaker And Peace Activist, Buzz Haughton

Quaker Studies

Although Bayard Rustin was one of the most important leaders of the American civil rights movement from the advent of its modern period in the 1950s until well into the 1980s, his name was seldom mentioned; he received comparatively little press or media attention, and others' names were usually much more readily associated with the movement than his was. His was a behind-the-scenes role that, for all its importance, never garnered Rustin the public acclaim he deserved. Rustin's homosexuality and early communist affiliation probably meant that the importance of his contribution to the civil rights and peace movements would never …

In Defense Of The Ivory Tower: Why Philosophers Should Stay Out Of Politics, Bas Van Der Vossen Oct 2014

In Defense Of The Ivory Tower: Why Philosophers Should Stay Out Of Politics, Bas Van Der Vossen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

Many political theorists, philosophers, social scientists, and other academics engage in political activism. And many think this is how things ought to be. In this essay, I challenge the ideal of the politically engaged academic. I argue that, quite to the contrary, political theorists, philosophers, and other political thinkers have a prima facie duty to refrain from political activism. This argument is based on a commonsense moral principle, a claim about the point of political thought, and findings in cognitive psychology.

Converting Capital: The Experiences Of Latinas/Os In Graduate Health Care Programs, Maristela C. Zell Oct 2014

Converting Capital: The Experiences Of Latinas/Os In Graduate Health Care Programs, Maristela C. Zell

The Qualitative Report

This qualitative study combines critical race theory, cultural capital theory, and counter-storytelling to examine the experiences of Latina/o in graduate health care programs. Community cultural wealth provided the framework to investigate the mechanisms by which students converted their sociocultural assets into the kinds of social, cultural, and educational capital needed to succeed in a graduate program and pursue their career goals. A qualitative content analysis was employed to interpret participants’ conversion experiences. The forms of community cultural wealth described by Yosso – aspirational, linguistic, familial, navigational, social, and resistant – intersected and interacted with one another. Aspirational and linguistic forms …

Expert Opinion? A Micro-Analysis Of Eating Disorder Talk On Dr. Phil, Andrea Lamarre, Olga Sutherland Oct 2014

Expert Opinion? A Micro-Analysis Of Eating Disorder Talk On Dr. Phil, Andrea Lamarre, Olga Sutherland

The Qualitative Report

In this study, we explored how eating and identities of individuals diagnosed with eating disorders are constructed on a popular television talk show, Dr. Phil. Informed by conversation analytic and discursive psychological research traditions, we show how Dr. Phil, jointly with guests, constitutes guests as mentally ill and accountable for their illness. Specifically, we highlight Dr. Phil’s unilateral pursuit of a solution to the “puzzle” of the eating disorder, including its origins and meanings, as he enlists the guests’ endorsement of his versions of their situations and experiences. We examine broader implications of such a framing for societal understandings of …

Autoethnography In Practice: A Book Review Of British Contemporary Ethnography, Jessica Nina Lester, Zulfkar Ozdogan Oct 2014

Autoethnography In Practice: A Book Review Of British Contemporary Ethnography, Jessica Nina Lester, Zulfkar Ozdogan

The Qualitative Report

In this article, we consider and offer a review of the edited volume, Contemporary British Autoethnography (2013). Within this volume, the editors, Short, Turner, and Grant, bring together 15 autoethnographic representations, which address issues of subjectivity, voice, writing, knowing, and being. Each contributor offers insights located within a particular field(s), while simultaneously sharing perspectives related to the qualitative community more generally. In this paper, we provide a brief summary of each chapter and also offer several questions generated after engaging with this volume. We invite others to participate in considering how this volume may be applied to their own research …

The Relationship Between Hoarding And Distractibility, Julia Y. Carbonella Oct 2014

The Relationship Between Hoarding And Distractibility, Julia Y. Carbonella

Open Access Theses

Hoarding is a debilitating disorder that has gained increasing interest in recent years, contributing to its re-classification as a discrete condition. However, much remains unclear about its underlying mechanisms of risk, though evidence implicates information processing deficits. In particular, the domain of inattention has been highlighted in extant clinical and phenomenological studies, though neuropsychological lab tests have produced largely mixed findings. The current study aimed to clarify the nature of attentional deficits by conducting a multi-method investigation, including an eye-tracking task designed to target distractibility, along with a sorting task as a behavioral measure of hoarding. Results indicated that self-reported …

Public Health Service Options For Affordable And Accessible Noncommunicable Disease And Related Chronic Disease Prevention And Management, Sharon Brownie, Andrew P. Hills, Rachel Rossiter Oct 2014

Public Health Service Options For Affordable And Accessible Noncommunicable Disease And Related Chronic Disease Prevention And Management, Sharon Brownie, Andrew P. Hills, Rachel Rossiter

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Globally, nations are confronted with the challenge of providing affordable health services to populations with increasing levels of noncommunicable and chronic disease. Paradoxically, many nations can both celebrate increases in life expectancy and bemoan parallel increases in chronic disease prevalence. Simply put, despite living longer, not all of that time is spent in good health. Combined with factors such as rising levels of obesity and related noncommunicable disease, the demand for health services is requiring nations to consider new models of affordable health care. Given the level of disease burden, all staff, not just doctors, need to be part of …

Substance Abuse Prevention In American Indian And Alaska Native Communities: Exploration Of Guiding Theoretical Underpinnings And Theoretical Fit In Practice, Margaret L. Walsh Oct 2014

Substance Abuse Prevention In American Indian And Alaska Native Communities: Exploration Of Guiding Theoretical Underpinnings And Theoretical Fit In Practice, Margaret L. Walsh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify ways Indigenous theoretical perspectives may guide current and future substance abuse prevention programs. As the majority of current theories guiding substance abuse prevention programs in American Indian and Alaska Native communities stem from Western ideologies and lack Indigenous perspectives, there is a paucity of research on theoretical underpinnings for Indigenous perspectives in AI/AN communities and their potential role in substance abuse prevention programming. It is well known that when programs are theoretically connected to the communities in which they are implemented, they are more likely to be accepted, accurately measured, and sustained …

Differential Expressions Of The Alternatively Spliced Variant Mrnas Of The Μ Opioid Receptor Gene, Oprm1, In Brain Regions Of Four Inbred Mouse Strains, Jin Xu, Zhigang Lu, Mingming Xu, Grace C. Rossi, Benjamin Kest, Amanda R. Waxman, Gavril W. Pasternak, Ying-Xian Pan

Publications and Research

The µ opioid receptor gene, OPRM1, undergoes extensive alternative pre-mRNA splicing in rodents and humans, with dozens of alternatively spliced variants of the OPRM1 gene. The present studies establish a SYBR green quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay to more accurately quantify mouse OPRM1 splice variant mRNAs. Using these qPCR assays, we examined the expression of OPRM1 splice variant mRNAs in selected brain regions of four inbred mouse strains displaying differences in µ opioid-induced tolerance and physical dependence: C56BL/6J, 129P3/J, SJL/J and SWR/J. The complete mRNA expression profiles of the OPRM1 splice variants reveal marked differences of the variant mRNA expression among …
