Cyberdemocracy: Assessing The European Parliament, Maria Cataldo
Cyberdemocracy: Assessing The European Parliament, Maria Cataldo
Theses
New information technologies have been widely predicted to change the nature of governance. The Internet has made the ideal of cyberdemocracy more attainable as the world grows smaller and more connected. Although the ideal no longer seems so distant a destination, nagging questions remain: Where is this place? Are we there yet? How much longer? This paper evaluates the website of one of the most powerful legislatures in the world, the European Parliament, to determine where we are, how far we have come, and what remains to be done to achieve the ideal of cyberdemocracy. Five criteria are used in …

Not Enough Cooks In The Kitchen: An Empirical Test Of A Two-Factor Model Of Work Unit Understaffing, Cristina Keiko Hudson
Not Enough Cooks In The Kitchen: An Empirical Test Of A Two-Factor Model Of Work Unit Understaffing, Cristina Keiko Hudson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although most working adults possess a lay understanding of understaffing in the workplace and may, in fact, feel they are experiencing such a stressor, a review of the research literature reveals a general lack of empirical work on understaffing and its consequences. Hudson and Shen (2013, Development and testing of a new measure of understaffing. Paper presented at the Southern Management Association 2013 Meeting, New Orleans, LA) recently proposed a new model of understaffing that distinguished between two types of personnel deficiencies, manpower and expertise shortages, and linked these dimensions to worker well-being and attitudinal outcomes and identified likely mediating …

What are the implications of similarities and differences in the gestural and symbolic development of apes and humans? This focused review uses as a starting point our recent study that provided evidence that gesture supported the symbolic development of a chimpanzee, a bonobo, and a human child reared in language-enriched environments at comparable stages of communicative development. These three species constitute a complete clade, species possessing a common immediate ancestor. Communicative behaviors observed among all species in a clade are likely to have been present in the common ancestor. Similarities in the form and function of many gestures produced by the …

The Effects Of Emotive Reasoning On Secondary School Students' Decision-Making In The Context Of Socioscientific Issues, Wardell Anthony Powell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The discrepancy between what students are being taught within K-12 science classrooms and what they experience in the real world has been well documented. This study sought to explore the ways a high school biology curriculum, which integrates socioscientific issues, impacts students' emotive reasoning and their ability to evaluate evidence, make informed decisions on contemporary scientific dilemmas, and integrate scientific content knowledge in their reasoning on SSI. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to examine differences within and between an SSI treatment group and a comparison group as well as individual differences among students' responses over a semester of …

Testing For Measurement Invariance And Latent Mean Differences Across Methods: Interesting Incremental Information From Multitrait-Multimethod Studies, Christian Geiser, G. Leonard Burns, Mateu Servera
Psychology Faculty Publications
Models of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) are frequently applied to examine the convergent validity of scores obtained from multiple raters or methods in so-called multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) investigations. We show that interesting incremental information about method effects can be gained from including mean structures and tests of MI across methods in MTMM models. We present a modeling framework for testing MI in the first step of a CFA-MTMM analysis. We also discuss the relevance of MI in the context of four more complex CFA-MTMM models with method factors. We focus on three recently developed multiple-indicator CFA-MTMM models for structurally different methods …

The objective of this study was to prove whether perceived organizational injustice had influence on WPWU which affected work productivity. A total of 222 respondents working in various industries were gathered through web-survey. By using multinomial logistic regression analysis, this study found that high level use of internet for unrelated jobs between 2 …

Marketing In Small Firms: The Case Of Slovenia, Mateja Bodlaj, Iča Rojšek
Economic and Business Review
The purpose of this paper is to obtain a better understanding of how marketing is understood and practised by Slovenian small companies. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 25 small firm owners/managers. The main findings of our exploratory study suggest that the marketing style of Slovenian small firms is presumably similar to that of their Western counterparts. Marketing tends to be narrowly understood as tactics/methods (most often as being synonymous with advertising), with no person particularly responsible for it. Marketing plans often exist only in the heads of the owners/managers and usually have a short-term focus with very broadly defined …

A Resource-Based View Of Entrepreneurial Creativity And Its Implications To Entrepreneurship Education, Jing Lin, Anja Svetina Nabergoj
A Resource-Based View Of Entrepreneurial Creativity And Its Implications To Entrepreneurship Education, Jing Lin, Anja Svetina Nabergoj
Economic and Business Review
For entrepreneurs creative problem solving and innovation are key capabilities that can be built through experience and entrepreneurial learning. Unfortunately entrepreneurial education has received increased criticism over the past decade suggesting that entrepreneurship courses do not sufficiently emphasize development of creative capabilities. Although several scholars and educators emphasize the need for nurturing creativity in entrepreneurial education it remains unclear how to efficiently stimulate the creativity pertinent to entrepreneurial contexts. The aim of our study is to show how the logics of RBV theory can be used to explain the creative behaviours of entrepreneurs in which EC is manifested in resource …

Hunger, Food Prices, And The Food Safety Modernization Act: Balancing Physical Safety And Food Security, Kelly M. Gay
Florida Law Review
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Safety Modernization Act (Modernization Act) was signed into law by President Barack Obama on January 4, 2011. The goal of the Act is to reform the United States’ food safety regulations that attempt to safeguard the American public from foodborne illness. However, America is also in the middle of a hunger crisis—millions of Americans are unable to provide enough food for themselves and their families due to a lack of financial resources. The Modernization Act has the potential to increase the cost of food production and pass this cost along to the public …

The Influence Of Social Environment And Hypercholesterolemia On Sympathetic Nervous System Innervation Of Vascular Tissue In Rabbits, Crystal M. Noller
Open Access Dissertations
Behavioral and psychosocial factors have been shown to influence cardiovascular disease. While interventions targeting these risk factors demonstrate clinical improvement, mechanisms underlying these effects remain to be determined. Research has also defined a relationship between psychosocial stress and immune function, and revealed stress related increases in lymphatic sympathetic nerve density. Considering that inflammation characterizes the various stages of heart disease, the current study assessed whether social stress could influence vascular sympathetic innervation in the presence or absence of hypercholesterolemia. We found dense sympathetic innervation extending into the vascular media and intima throughout the aortic arch and thorax in diseased as …

Executive functions (EF) are an important aspect of school readiness that have been shown to predict higher achievement in language, math, and science starting in the early years (Blair & Razza, 2007; Bull, Espy, & Wiebe, 2008; Nayfeld, Fuccillo, & Greenfield, 2013; Ponitz, McClelland, Matthews, & Morrison, 2009). Children who are bilingual have been shown to have enhanced EF skills when compared to their monolingual peers (Bialystok & Viswanathan, 2009; Carlson & Meltzoff, 2008; Poulin-Dubois, Blaye, Coutya, & Bialystok, 2011; Riggs, Shin, Unber, Spruijt-Metz, Pentz, 2013).
