A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Undocumented Latino Students To Enroll In And Persist At A Four-Year Public Hispanic-Serving Institution In Texas, Angela C. Stuart-Carruthers Nov 2014

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Undocumented Latino Students To Enroll In And Persist At A Four-Year Public Hispanic-Serving Institution In Texas, Angela C. Stuart-Carruthers

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Undocumented students in the United States are trapped in a myriad of completing federal, state, and local laws that impact their lives daily. While approximately 60,000 undocumented students graduate from high school each year, the college going rate for this population is substantially lower than their documented peers. Since President Obama signed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals executive order, undocumented students have gained national attention. Despite this new focus on undocumented students few studies have been conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the live experiences of these students.

Framed by Tinto’s (1993) Theory of Student Departure and Latino …

The Relationship Between Body Mass Index, Fitness, Self-Efficacy And Their Prediction On Criterion Referenced Competency Test Scores For Eighth Grade Students, Julie Hale Nov 2014

The Relationship Between Body Mass Index, Fitness, Self-Efficacy And Their Prediction On Criterion Referenced Competency Test Scores For Eighth Grade Students, Julie Hale

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study sought to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI), physical fitness, self-efficacy, and their possible prediction on scores from the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) for eighth grade students in north Georgia. The participants were 183 eighth grade students in three north Georgia middle schools enrolled in physical education during the fall of 2013. Scores from the students' BMI, FitnessGram®, General Self-Efficacy Test (GSES), and results from the Georgia CRCT were compiled and analyzed to give a better understanding of their predictive relationship. Students complete CRCT tests every school year between third and eighth grade, and …

A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Of Developmental Math Students' Experiences And Perceptions, Megan Cordes Nov 2014

A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Of Developmental Math Students' Experiences And Perceptions, Megan Cordes

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Current literature suggests the rise of enrollment among United States (U.S.) postsecondary institutions but the decline in graduation rates. While there is extensive quantitative data examining course redesigns and increasing student achievement in developmental math courses, there is limited research examining students' experiences and perceptions within these courses. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to examine the experiences and perceptions of developmental math students. This study utilized the theoretical framework of Bandura's (1997) social cognitive theory and Tinto's (2012a) retention theory. Research questions focused on the lived experience of struggling within a developmental math course, past math experiences …

Tipping Point Of Resistance: A Multi-Case Study Of The Influence Of School Culture On Classroom Positive Behavior Interventions And Support Practices, Angela Shoemake Nov 2014

Tipping Point Of Resistance: A Multi-Case Study Of The Influence Of School Culture On Classroom Positive Behavior Interventions And Support Practices, Angela Shoemake

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Public schools have seen an increase in the use of school-wide positive behavior intervention supports (SWPBIS) to address the emotional and behavioral needs of students. While SWPBIS is a validated, evidence-based practice, teachers often resist the use of this proactive intervention model claiming that they do not have the time or skills to develop interventions to address the students' challenging behaviors. The purpose of this instrumental multi-case study was to systematically explore and compare the personal experiences of staff who ended their resistance to SWPBIS and successfully implemented at the classroom level. A Georgia middle school implementing SWPBIS at the …

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether site-specific mouth rinsing with oral disinfectants can improve oral odor beyond the traditional panoral mouth disinfection with mouth rinses by targeting specifically oral malodor implicated anaerobic bacteria. METHODS: Twenty healthy fasting subjects volunteered for a blinded prospective, descriptive correlational crossover cross-section clinical trial conducted during the month of Ramadan between July and August 2013 in Albaha province in Saudi Arabia involving the application of Listerine® Cool Mint® mouth rinse by either the traditional panoral rinsing method, or a site-specific disinfection method targeting the subgingival and supragingival plaque and the posterior third of the tongue dorsum, while …

Nudging Users Towards Cross-Border Mediation: Is It Really About Harmonised Enforcement Regulation?, Nadja Alexander Nov 2014

Nudging Users Towards Cross-Border Mediation: Is It Really About Harmonised Enforcement Regulation?, Nadja Alexander

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In this paper the author challenges her audience to think in different ways about creating the shift needed to make cross-border mediation practice a reality rather than rhetoric. Within Asia, Hong Kong, Singapore and other centres are positioning themselves as regional leaders in cross-border mediation. Statistically though, there is not an enormous amount of cross-border mediation going on. Despite the apparent advantages of mediation and the international regulatory activity outlined above, cross-border commercial mediation practice has been slow to develop. At dispute resolution conferences and other get-togethers, mediators and other ADR advocates ask themselves, “Why”? While there is little empirical …

Do Away With Race-Based Annual Academic Data, Tan K. B. Eugene Nov 2014

Do Away With Race-Based Annual Academic Data, Tan K. B. Eugene

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law and former Nominated Member of Parliament Eugene Tan urged for the Ministry of Education to stop publishing race-based academic data for national examinations. This includes the Primary School Leaving Examination, and the GCE O- and A-Levels. He felt that at a time when the Chinese, Malay, Indian and Others racial classification is less relevant, with more inter-racial and international marriages, we must do away with racial stereotypes or notions of cultural deficits, because they undermine the very students we seek to help.

Parting The Chevron Sea: An Argument For Chevron's Greater Applicability To Cabinet Than Independent Agencies, Andrew T. Bond Nov 2014

Parting The Chevron Sea: An Argument For Chevron's Greater Applicability To Cabinet Than Independent Agencies, Andrew T. Bond

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note argues that cabinet agencies are better suited to receive Chevron deference than independent agencies because voters should desire such policy decisions to be made by those closest to electoral accountability, rather than unelected Article III judges with life-tenure. In other words, the judiciary should accept the countermajoritarian difficulty as fundamentally true and review cabinet agency decisions in light of Chevron deference. Part I examines the revolutionary decision of Chevron and its aftermath. Central to Part I is an inquiry into whether Chevron should be applied on a case-by-case or across-the-board basis, and whether Chevron has usurped the judiciary’s …

Adherence In Multiple Sclerosis (Adams): Classification, Relevance, And Research Needs. A Meeting Report, C Heesen, J Bruce, P Feys, J Sastre-Garriga, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Background: Adherence to medical interventions is a global problem. With an increasing amount of partially effective but expensive drug treatments adherence is increasingly relevant in multiple sclerosis (MS). Perceived lack of efficacy and side effects as well as neuropsychiatric factors such as forgetfulness, fatigue and depression are major determinants. However, research on adherence to behavioural interventions as part of rehabilitative interventions has only rarely been studied. Methods: In a one-day meeting health researchers as well as patient representatives and other stakeholders discussed adherence issues in MS and developed a general draft research agenda within a focus group session. Results: The …

Blobs In Tartan Colours: Margaret Tait's Painted Eightsome, K Parker Nov 2014

Blobs In Tartan Colours: Margaret Tait's Painted Eightsome, K Parker

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This essay explores the interplay of Julia Kristeva's concepts of semiotic and symbolic in the Orcadian film-poet Margaret Tait's direct animation film Painted Eightsome, in which the music of a Scottish reel is combined with animated artwork painted frame-by-frame onto clear 35mm film. As a creative artist, Tait used a range of forms. She wrote prose and poetry, and made short films, usually shooting on 16mm with her clockwork Bolex camera. In her cinematic work she explored an array of highly experimental techniques, including painting and scratching on the film surface, from the beginning of her filmmaking career in Italy …

Combining Multiple Kernel Methods On Riemannian Manifold For Emotion Recognition In The Wild, M. Liu, R. Wang, S. Li, S. Shan, Zhiwu Huang, X. Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present the method for our submission to the Emotion Recognition in the Wild Challenge (EmotiW 2014). The challenge is to automatically classify the emotions acted by human subjects in video clips under realworld environment. In our method, each video clip can be represented by three types of image set models (i.e. linear subspace, covariance matrix, and Gaussian distribution) respectively, which can all be viewed as points residing on some Riemannian manifolds. Then different Riemannian kernels are employed on these set models correspondingly for similarity/distance measurement. For classification, three types of classifiers, i.e. kernel SVM, logistic regression, …

Assessing Vividness Of Mental Imagery: The Plymouth Sensory Imagery Questionnaire, J Andrade, J May, C Deeprose, Sj Baugh, G Ganis Nov 2014

Assessing Vividness Of Mental Imagery: The Plymouth Sensory Imagery Questionnaire, J Andrade, J May, C Deeprose, Sj Baugh, G Ganis

School of Psychology

Mental imagery may occur in any sensory modality, although visual imagery has been most studied. A sensitive measure of the vividness of imagery across a range of modalities is needed: the shorter version of Bett’s QMI (Sheehan, 1967) uses outdated items and has an unreliable factor structure. We report the development and initial validation of the Plymouth Sensory Imagery Questionnaire (Psi-Q) comprising items for each of the following modalities: Vision, Sound, Smell, Taste, Touch, Bodily Sensation and Emotional Feeling. An Exploratory Factor Analysis on a 35-item form indicated that these modalities formed separate factors, rather than a single imagery factor, …

Symptom Burden And Healthcare Utilization In Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Catherina Anne Madani Phd Nov 2014

Symptom Burden And Healthcare Utilization In Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Catherina Anne Madani Phd

Dissertations

Background: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rapidly progressive disease. There is currently no cure; thus treatment is aimed at prolonging survival, improving functional status (FS), and symptom mitigation. Symptom burden (SB) can impact quality of life (QOL), and lead to increased healthcare utilization. Palliative care (PC) has been associated with higher QOL, decreased depression, aggressive care, and mortality. The Institute of Medicine's (IOM) recent report supports earlier integration of PC for people living with serious illness. Detection of patients at high risk for heavy SB may help to identify patients who could benefit from earlier integration of PC into …

Patients With Advanced Lung Cancer: Quality Of Life And Perception Of Dyspnea, Barbara A. Roces Phd, Msn, Np, Rn

Dissertations

Background: Dyspnea perception can be defined as a multidimensional experience of breathing discomfort, influenced by physiological, psychological, social, and environmental factors, that includes secondary psychological and behavioral responses and cannot be defined only by physical objective abnormalities (Mularski et al., 2010). Dyspnea is the most common and distressing symptom in patients with advanced lung cancer and decreases one's quality of life (QOL) (Smith et al., 2001). Furthermore, dyspnea has been found to interfere with physical activities such as walking, work, and psychological activities such as disposition, taking pleasure in life, relationship with others, and sleep (Tanaka, Akechi, Okuyama, Nishiwaki, & …

Patient Care Technology And The Nurse-Patient Relationship, Belinda M. Toole Phd, Msn, Rn Nov 2014

Patient Care Technology And The Nurse-Patient Relationship, Belinda M. Toole Phd, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

Background: Technological devices are increasingly used in healthcare and their proliferation has providers questioning the impact on the patient-provider relationship. Technological device integration has been studied in the primary care setting, less extensively in the acute care setting. The impact of device use on the nurse-patient relationship in acute care setting required further study, particularly with nursing's history of holistic practice incorporating caring and presence. Objectives: The study purpose was to explore the patient's perceptions of nurse caring and presence when technological devices were used in care delivery in the acute care setting. Specific aims were: 1) to describe the …

Sex Differences In The Relationship Between Sensation Seeking, Trait Emotional Intelligence And Delinquent Behaviour, Alison M. Bacon, Hannah Burak, James Rann Nov 2014

Sex Differences In The Relationship Between Sensation Seeking, Trait Emotional Intelligence And Delinquent Behaviour, Alison M. Bacon, Hannah Burak, James Rann

School of Psychology

Levels of sensation seeking peak in adolescence and there is a well-documented association of sensation seeking with delinquency and other risk-taking behaviours. The present study investigated the potential moderating effect of trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) on this relationship. Trait EI encompasses high levels of empathy and emotion regulation and is associated with positive outcomes and well-being. Ninety-six young adults (48 females and 48 males; overall Mage = 19.76) completed measures of sensation seeking, trait EI and self-reported delinquent behaviours (DB) since age 12. Results indicated that sensation seeking and frequency of DB were positively associated, but this effect …

How Much Exposure To English Is Necessary For A Bilingual Toddler To Perform Like A Monolingual Peer In Language Tests?, Allegra Cattani, Kirsten Abbot-Smith, Rafalla Farag, Andrea Krott, Frédérique Arreckx, Ian Dennis, Caroline Floccia Nov 2014

How Much Exposure To English Is Necessary For A Bilingual Toddler To Perform Like A Monolingual Peer In Language Tests?, Allegra Cattani, Kirsten Abbot-Smith, Rafalla Farag, Andrea Krott, Frédérique Arreckx, Ian Dennis, Caroline Floccia

School of Psychology

Background Bilingual children are under-referred due to an ostensible expectation that they lag behind their monolingual peers in their English acquisition. The recommendations of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) state that bilingual children should be assessed in both the languages known by the children. However, despite these recommendations, a majority of speech and language professionals report that they assess bilingual children only in English as bilingual children come from a wide array of language backgrounds and standardized language measures are not available for the majority of these. Moreover, even when such measures do exist, they are …

Rights Speech, Timothy Zick Nov 2014

Rights Speech, Timothy Zick

Faculty Publications

Freedom of expression has a complex and dynamic relationship with a number of other constitutional rights, including abortion, the right to bear arms, equal protection, the franchise, and religious liberty. This Article discusses one aspect of that relationship. It critically analyzes the regulation of "rights speech" - communications about or concerning the recognition, scope, or exercise of constitutional rights. As illustrative examples, the Article focuses on regulation of speech about abortion and the Second Amendment right to bear arms. Governments frequently manage, structure, and limit how individuals discuss constitutional rights. For example, laws and regulations compel physicians to convey information …

'Some Account Of The Progress Of The Truth As It Is In Jesus': The White Quakers Of Ireland, James Gregory Oct 2014

'Some Account Of The Progress Of The Truth As It Is In Jesus': The White Quakers Of Ireland, James Gregory

Quaker Studies

The White Quakers were a small but vocal sect of schismatic Quakers in Dublin, Waterford, Clonmel and Mountmellick, under the leadership of Joshua Jacob and Abigail Beale, between c. 1840-1854. The history of the sect, its connections with contemporary utopian leaders in England, its contemporary reputation in the Quaker and non-Quaker world, and treatment in historiography are examined. White Quaker ideas on religious authority, gender and marriage, capitalist and commercial activity, are also outlined in the following study.

In Search Of A New Jerusalem: A Preliminary Investigation Into The Causes And Impact Of Welsh Quaker Emigration To Pennsylvania, C.1660 - 1750, Richard C. Allen

Quaker Studies

The establishment of the North American Association for the Study of Welsh Culture and History (NAASW CH) in the mid 1990s has informed the work of historians on both sides of the Atlantic, and yet the important early history of Welsh emigration to America and reverse migration has still to be fully addressed. Research on Welsh migratory patterns and the impact of America on Wales in the late-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, notably by Gwyn Alf Williams, Barry Levy, and Bill Jones, has made an important contribution to our understanding of the experiences of Welsh-Americans. However, further research is needed if …

Managerial Use Of Text Messaging In International Organizations, José Guadalupe Torres, Roger Conaway Oct 2014

Managerial Use Of Text Messaging In International Organizations, José Guadalupe Torres, Roger Conaway

Global Advances in Business Communication

When organizational employees adopt and use various communication technologies in the workplace, the process of choosing such media has emerged as a complex one. Numerous variables impact the decisions of employees and managers when they implement these technologies. Our study adapted van den Hooff, Groot, & de Jonge’s (2005) assessment instrument for email usage to text messaging in international companies. Our results reflected similar findings as van den Hooff, Groot, & de Jonge (2005) in most subscales of the instrument. Specifically, we investigated the extent to which managers had used and applied text messaging in organizational settings. We utilized a …

The Role Of Linguistic Ability And Business Expertise For Turn-Taking In Intercultural Business Communication, Misa Fujio Oct 2014

The Role Of Linguistic Ability And Business Expertise For Turn-Taking In Intercultural Business Communication, Misa Fujio

Global Advances in Business Communication

Taking turns in intercultural business meetings is sometimes very challenging for non-native speakers. This study, based on simulated business meetings, investigated what factors are more influential when taking turns, with a special focus on linguistic ability and business experience. In the current study, 12 participants were divided into three groups, each of which consisted of a native speaker of American English, a Japanese businessperson and two Japanese university students. The data were analysed both quantitatively (such as floor-holding time or speech rate) and qualitatively (such as discourse analysis). The analysed results indicated that the participants’ linguistic ability was the strongest …

Mobile Phone Use In Meetings Among Chinese Professionals: Perspectives On Multicommunication And Civility, Peter W. Cardon, Ying Dai

Global Advances in Business Communication

The purpose of this study was to examine the nature of mobile phone use in meetings among Chinese professionals. We replicated and extended surveys conducted in North America in order to draw cross-cultural comparisons. We surveyed 186 Chinese professionals about their attitudes toward mobile phones in meetings, their actual mobile phone actions in meetings, and their attitudes about appropriate response time to digital messages. Based on survey results, we concluded the following: (a) Chinese professionals are far more accepting of mobile phone use in meetings than are American professionals; (b) older Chinese professionals are more accepting of mobile phone use …

"The Personal Is Political Science": Epistemological And Methodological Issues In Feminist Social Science Research On Prostitution, Emily St. Denny Oct 2014

"The Personal Is Political Science": Epistemological And Methodological Issues In Feminist Social Science Research On Prostitution, Emily St. Denny

Journal of International Women's Studies

Unlike academic and policy discussions over enduring and pervasive social problems like poverty or ill health, which focus on how they should be tackled, debates concerning individuals in prostitution are divided over how, and to what extent, prostitution even is a problem. This has led to apparently intractable disagreement over the legitimate representation of a subject at the juncture between vulnerable invisibility and liberated agency. Concretely, this raises a paradox whereby feminist researchers, seeking to facilitate emancipation through the illumination of the experiences of a stigmatised and invisible subject, must carefully give voice to the voiceless without speaking on their …
