Not All Feminist Ideas Are Equal: Anti-Capitalist Feminism And Female Complicity, Giuliana Monteverde Oct 2014

Not All Feminist Ideas Are Equal: Anti-Capitalist Feminism And Female Complicity, Giuliana Monteverde

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper advocates a more explicit feminist discussion of female complicity by demonstrating that existing discourses on women’s participation in patriarchal practices are inadequate. By looking at two contemporary anti-capitalist feminist texts—One Dimensional Woman by Nina Power and Meat Market: Female Flesh under Capitalism by Laurie Penny—I show that these feminists acknowledge the disrupted sex binary, but have not produced texts that reflect this understanding. Whilst these authors admirably concern themselves with structural reasons for inequality—rather than blaming individual women—their treatment of complicit women is wavering. They are scornful of powerful American Republican women and of ‘fun’ feminists, but …

Sexuality, Religion And Nationalism: A Contrapuntal Reading Of The History Of Female Activism And Political Change In Egypt, Jihan Zakarriya Oct 2014

Sexuality, Religion And Nationalism: A Contrapuntal Reading Of The History Of Female Activism And Political Change In Egypt, Jihan Zakarriya

Journal of International Women's Studies

Focusing on the Thomson Reuters Foundation Women Survey in 2013 that found Egypt to be ‘the worst Arab state for women’ (Boros 1), this paper aims at tracing the interaction between sexuality, religion, and politics, in controlling and marginalizing the public roles of Egyptian women throughout the 20th Century, which has reached its climax in post-Mubarak Egypt. I argue that, despite sexual and social abuses, the first decade of the 21th Century has witnessed the emergence of a promising potential of political feminist activism and power in Egypt.

You Are What You (M)Eat: Explorations Of Meat-Eating, Masculinity And Masquerade, Amy Calvert Oct 2014

You Are What You (M)Eat: Explorations Of Meat-Eating, Masculinity And Masquerade, Amy Calvert

Journal of International Women's Studies

Food consumption is frequently linked to identity and to who we are as individuals, which I explore through the analysis of the US reality television series Man V. Food. Through close readings of various scenes, I look at representations of hegemonic masculine performance, and the sexualisation of women and meat. In light of my analysis, I argue that the show is both post-feminist and part of a wider backlash against feminist action. Man V. Food is analysed in consideration of the wider phenomena of masculine crisis and backlash against various social movements, specifically recent feminist and vegetarian/vegan movements. This …

The Promise Of The Digital Humanities And The Contested Nature Of Digital Scholarship, William G. Thomas Iii Oct 2014

The Promise Of The Digital Humanities And The Contested Nature Of Digital Scholarship, William G. Thomas Iii

Department of History: Faculty Publications

This essay examines the contested qualities of digital scholarship and why, paradoxically, the twenty-year surge in the digital humanities--from 1993 to 2013--has produced relatively little interpretive or argumentative scholarship. In this first phase of the digital humanities, scholars produced innovative and sophisticated hybrid works of scholarship, blending archives, tools, commentaries, data collections, and visualizations. For the most part in the disciplines, however, few of these works have been reviewed or critiqued. Because the disciplines expect interpretation, argument, and criticism, it could be argued that digital humanists have not produced enough digital interpretive scholarship and what we have produced has not …

Violence In Illicit Markets: Unintended Consequences And The Search For Paradoxical Effects Of Enforcement, James Prieger, Jonathan D. Kulick Oct 2014

Violence In Illicit Markets: Unintended Consequences And The Search For Paradoxical Effects Of Enforcement, James Prieger, Jonathan D. Kulick

School of Public Policy Working Papers

The textbook competitive model of drug markets predicts that greater law enforcement leads to higher black market prices, but also to the unintended consequences of greater revenue and violence. These predictions are not in accord with the paradoxical outcomes evinced by recent history in some drug markets, where enforcement rose even as prices fell. We show that predictions of the textbook model are not unequivocal, and that when bandwagon effects among scofflaws are introduced, the simple predictions are more likely to be reversed. We next show that even simple models of noncompetitive black markets can elicit paradoxical outcomes. Therefore, we …

Online Professional Development For Child Care Providers: Do They Have Appropriate Access To And Comfort With The Internet?, Lindsay E. Wright, Diane W. Bales

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

With the expansion of online trainings today, Extension professionals have an opportunity to reach child care providers in more convenient ways. However, having convenient, reliable Internet access can be a barrier to online training for some child care providers, especially those with limited financial resources. This study investigated child care providers’ ability to access online training through convenient, reliable Internet access by asking 494 child care providers in Georgia about their access to and comfort with the Internet. Participants completed a brief 12-question survey that included questions about their Internet access and use for both personal and professional purposes (i.e., …

Creating A Community Classroom: Strategies To Promote Inclusion And Reduce Bullying In Early Childhood, Julie C. Parker, Angel Herring, Jeffrey Leffler, Cappe Hallberg

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Research suggests that young children with disabilities often fall victim to bullying because of a lack of social competence and social skills necessary for consistent engagement with peers. This article focuses on a comprehensive approach to classroom management and offers important strategies for a multilevel positive behavioral support plan. The positive behavioral support plan is embedded in the daily curriculum and includes strategies that enhance cooperative learning and socialization experiences, increases academic readiness, and supports academic success.

What Do You Want To Accomplish In The Next 10 Years? The Goals Of Emerging Adults, Joshua J. Turner, Joe D. Wilmoth, Tommy M. Phillips Oct 2014

What Do You Want To Accomplish In The Next 10 Years? The Goals Of Emerging Adults, Joshua J. Turner, Joe D. Wilmoth, Tommy M. Phillips

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Emerging adulthood is a period characterized by transition. Individuals in this stage of development find themselves in between adolescence and young adulthood, faced with consequential decisions related to their educational attainment, career trajectory, and the overall direction of their life course. This study focused on the goal-setting behavior of emerging adults. Data were collected through interviews with individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 (N = 91). It was expected that the goals of this group would be oriented toward more individualistic pursuits, with less emphasis placed on more collectivistic goals. It also was anticipated that interviewees would have …

The Dispute Of Ambalat In The Perspective Of Indonesian Foreign Policy In The Post-New Order Era, Syamsul Hadi Oct 2014

The Dispute Of Ambalat In The Perspective Of Indonesian Foreign Policy In The Post-New Order Era, Syamsul Hadi

Indonesian Journal of International Law

This article analyzes the Ambalat territorial dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia, viewing from the perspective of Indonesian foreign policy in the Post-New Order era. The writer argues that Ambalat is a typical case in which Indonesian foreign policy had been widely influenced by public pressures which force government to take a firm stance against Malaysia. The practices of democratic system, including free media, have become an important factor behind such firm stance, along with the growing nationalism amongst public in the Post-New Order Indonesia. However, in relations with the willingness to maintain a regional influence in ASEAN, the government actually …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a Direct Instruction (DI) flashcard system on the mastery of the multiplication facts by a 14-year-old boy with learning and behavioral issues. The participant attended a low-income high school located in a large urban area in the Pacific Northwest. A changing criterion design was employed to evaluate the efficacy of DI flashcards. When DI flashcards were employed, the performance increased and the participant met or was close to criterion for each criterion ceiling. The DI flashcard procedure was easy to implement and evaluate, and the current paper includes suggestions …

How Consumer Characteristics Moderate Time Effects On Online Purchase Preference, Zhen Li, Lin Huang Oct 2014

How Consumer Characteristics Moderate Time Effects On Online Purchase Preference, Zhen Li, Lin Huang

Asia Marketing Journal

In this paper, we posit that time-related effects (i.e., the importance of saving time) on patronage preference for shopping online will be moderated by consumer characteristics. To explore these moderating effects, we empirically examine the moderating roles of consumer characteristics on the respective effects of shopping-time-saved and delivery on online purchase preference. On the basis of analyses performed on data gleaned from an Internet-based survey, this study demonstrate that time effects related to both shopping-time-saved and delivery on online purchase preference are more pronounced for consumers who are male, young, and more starved for time. In addition, the effect of …

Blue Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: A Cross Cultural Study On Color Perception And Memory, Mark Douglas Lowry Oct 2014

Blue Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: A Cross Cultural Study On Color Perception And Memory, Mark Douglas Lowry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

According the linguistic relativity hypothesis, the language one speaks affects how one thinks. Because languages differ in how they categorize color, linguistic relativity has often been tested by conducting experiments on color perception and memory. This study examines the linguistic relativity hypothesis using ecologically valid stimuli: pictures of eyes. Because Russian-speakers are more likely to describe blue/grey eyes as grey, whereas English speakers are more likely to describe them as blue, English and Russian participants were asked to match the overall color of blue eyes to a color scale. There were three conditions. In the first condition (perception), participants saw …

Self-Perceived Competence Of New Student Affairs Professionals, Jennifer Smith Schneider Oct 2014

Self-Perceived Competence Of New Student Affairs Professionals, Jennifer Smith Schneider

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to determine the extent to which new student affairs professionals feel competent for the work and to identify the experiences that foster such competence in them. The study also revealed discrepancies in the perceived levels and sources of competence between professionals who have completed either one or three years of full-time employment in student affairs. While some quantitative studies have addressed competence in student affairs professionals, the literature lacks in-depth information regarding the acquisition of competence of new professionals. This basic qualitative study offers rich information about competence development from the professionals themselves.

Participants graduated from …

Determining The Feasibility Of Milk Vending Machines To Improve Calcium Intake Among College Students, Laura E. Monnat, Angela M. Rose, Julie A. Kennel, Christopher H. Holloman, Gail L. Kaye, Carolyn W. Gunther Oct 2014

Determining The Feasibility Of Milk Vending Machines To Improve Calcium Intake Among College Students, Laura E. Monnat, Angela M. Rose, Julie A. Kennel, Christopher H. Holloman, Gail L. Kaye, Carolyn W. Gunther

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Calcium intake declines from late adolescence to young adulthood, in part, due to decreases in accessibility to milk and dairy products. While milk vending has shown demonstrated success in secondary schools, no studies have examined whether milk vending improves calcium intake among college students. We hypothesized that milk and calcium intake would be higher among college students given access to milk vending in their dormitory (milk vending consumers) compared to those lacking access in their dormitory (non-milk vending consumers). Milk vending machines were installed in two dormitories, and two dormitories having non-milk beverage vending served as comparison sites. Students completed …

Characteristics And Motivational Factors Of Effective Extension Advisory Leaders: Implications For Building Strong Extension Advisory Councils, Joy Kish, K. S. U. Jayaratne, Jim Flowers, Mark J. Kistler

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics and motivational factors of effective Extension advisory leaders. This Delphi study was conducted with a selected group of County Extension Directors and a group of Extension State Advisory Leaders. The study identified 10 characteristics that distinguish an effective Extension advisory leader. Some of these characteristics are explicit and easy to observe, while others are implicit and difficult to directly observe. Therefore, it is practical to use directly observable characteristics of effective advisory leaders when selecting volunteers. Once potential volunteers are spotted in the community, implicit characteristics of effective advisory leaders …

Assessing Family Level Behaviors For Obesity Prevention: Development And Preliminary Validation Of The Family Stage Of Change Tool, Katherine B. Gunter, Patrick Abi Nader, Brendan D. Klein, Deborah H. John Oct 2014

Assessing Family Level Behaviors For Obesity Prevention: Development And Preliminary Validation Of The Family Stage Of Change Tool, Katherine B. Gunter, Patrick Abi Nader, Brendan D. Klein, Deborah H. John

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

We applied the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) to develop the Family Stage of Change (FSOC) screening tool. Our goal was to provide practitioners an instrument that measures families’ readiness to change obesity preventing behaviors, in order to optimize family-focused obesity-prevention intervention strategies. We evaluated instrument validity by comparing responses on the FSOC to related items on a validated family behavioral and environmental assessment (Family Nutrition and Physical Activity Assessment; FNPA) shown to predict child BMI. Study participants included parents and caregivers (N = 146) of children ages 2-14 years recruited through preschool, elementary, and middle school listservs. Descriptive analyses were conducted …

Barriers To Conducting Supervised Agricultural Experiences As Perceived By Preservice Education Teachers, J. Joey Blackburn, Jon W. Ramsey Oct 2014

Barriers To Conducting Supervised Agricultural Experiences As Perceived By Preservice Education Teachers, J. Joey Blackburn, Jon W. Ramsey

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

The purpose of this descriptive study was to assess preservice agriculture teachers’ perceptions of the importance of Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) and their views on barriers to conducting SAE. A census of the sophomore-level agricultural education course at Oklahoma State University was conducted to measure perceptions at the beginning and end of the course. This study was framed upon Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior. Results indicated that preservice teachers perceived SAE was an important component of agricultural education and important at the secondary school they attended. The greatest barrier to conducting SAE was their lack of familiarity with newer SAE …
