Wisdom In The Counseling Relationship, Linda C. Osterlund Jan 2014

Wisdom In The Counseling Relationship, Linda C. Osterlund

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

The counselor’s wisdom, expressed through the self-of- the-counselor, will potentially transform the counseling relationship. The purpose of this phenomenological pilot study was to define wisdom from the counselor’s perspective and describe the lived experience of wisdom in the therapeutic working alliance. Several descriptive themes emerged as distinct aspects of the wisdom of the counselor; a reflective attitude, the ability to gain insight from experience, emotional intelligence, cognitive ability, real-world skills, and concern for others. The holistic description of wisdom which materialized has important implications for counselor education and supervision, since it can be intentionally incorporated into counselor training programs from …

Reflective Writing: From Pedagogy To Practice In A Jesuit University, Janet Preis, Erin Stauder

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the effects of reflective writing when it was integrated into graduate students’ early clinical experience in speech-language pathology. Journaling was introduced to teach, support, and foster Jesuit ideals, particularly that of reflection. Statistical analysis comparing students’ pre and post semester understanding of how to apply journaling to themselves, their clients, their clinical education, and Ignatian Pedagogy showed a significant increase over time for each of these areas. In addition, effect size analysis indicated that the “learning curve” was great, as all areas of understanding (self, others, education, and Ignatian Pedagogy) showed …

Accompanying The Student: The Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm And Prior Learning, Kimberly R. Connor

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

At the University of San Francisco’s School of Management (SoM), working adults enrolled in our Bachelor of Science in Management degree completion program participate in a process of experience and reflection that prepares them, as our slogan proclaims, to “change the world from here.” Before our working adult students take a management or business class, they are introduced to a process we call the Interdisciplinary Studies Assessment (ISA), a prior learning opportunity that is distinctive for how it works within an Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) that recognizes that learning is a lifelong journey that can take place in a variety …

Physician Assistant Studies Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: A vignette-based study assessed the influence of social class attributions toward a hypothetical client's difficulty. Method: 188 licensed mental health professionals who were recruited through professional listservs completed an online survey after reviewing one of two versions of a vignette describing a hypothetical client that varied based on social class cues. Results: As expected, this sample of licensed mental health practitioners detected social class differences based on the descriptors of the hypothetical client across the two vignettes. These perceived social class differences, however, did not impact participants' attributions toward the client for causing or solving her problems, level of …

The Impact Of Patient–Provider Communication And Language Spoken On Adequacy Of Depression Treatment For U.S. Women, Abiola O. Keller, Ronald Gangnon, Whitney P. Witt

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Many women with depression are untreated or undertreated for their condition. The quality of patient–provider communication may impact the receipt of depression treatment. We examine the relationship between patient–provider communication and receipt of adequate treatment for depression among women. The study sample consisted of women with depression who visited a provider in the previous 12 months in the 2002–2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (N = 3,179). Multivariate regression was used to examine the independent contribution of sociodemographic characteristics, health care factors, patient–provider communication, and respondent language on depression treatment status (none, some, adequate). We found that more than one-third of …

Approximately 80,000 businesses fail each year in the United States. This article presents an original empirical study of over 400 business restructuring professionals focused on a critical, arguably contributing factor to these failures—the conduct of boards of directors and management. Anecdotal evidence suggests that management of distressed companies often bury their heads in the sand until it is too late to remedy the companies’ problems, a phenomenon commonly called “ostrich syndrome.” The data confirm this behavior, show a prevalent use of loss framing, and suggest trends consistent with prospect theory. The article draws on these data and behavioral economics to …

A National Investigation Of Pre-Activity Health Screening Procedures In Fitness Facilities: Perspectives From American College Of Sports Medicine Certified Health Fitness Specialists, Aaron C. Craig

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It is well established in the literature that the morbidity and mortality rates due to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, hypertension, and diabetes in the U.S are alarmingly high. Likewise, there is ample data which demonstrates that participating in physical activity can help prevent and control many types of chronic diseases. Though the benefits outweigh the risks of participation in physical activity, the risks must be acknowledged.

Published standards and guidelines in the health fitness field have been established to address operational practices of fitness facilities, increase safety of participants and mitigate these risks. The present study was …

Human - Animal Interaction And The Benefits To Mental Health: A Phenomenological Study, Jasmin Jau Jan 2014

Human - Animal Interaction And The Benefits To Mental Health: A Phenomenological Study, Jasmin Jau

Theses : Honours

The prevalence of mental illness is a major concern in Australia and worldwide. It is one of the leading causes of disability in Australia and it is estimated that globally one in four people will experience a mental illness at some point in their life. One of the lesser known therapies and activities in the mental health field are animal assisted interventions that incorporate animals as part of the therapeutic or ameliorative process. Although emerging research literature shows that interaction with animals has positive effects on mental health and wellbeing, it is not clearly understood how and why there are …

Shades Of Grey: The Need For A Multi-Disciplinary Approach To Research Investigating Alcohol And Ageing, Celia Wilkinson, Julie Dare Jan 2014

Shades Of Grey: The Need For A Multi-Disciplinary Approach To Research Investigating Alcohol And Ageing, Celia Wilkinson, Julie Dare

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper calls for an increase in multi-disciplinary research on the issue of alcohol and ageing, to ensure public health interventions reflect the complex and diverse needs of older drinkers. Older people (65+ years) represent a unique segment of the population; compared to adolescents and younger people, they are more likely to have a range of co-morbid conditions and be taking prescribed medication, and are more physiologically vulnerable to the effects of alcohol. This suggests that from a public health perspective, alcohol use by older people is problematic. However, as with younger people, alcohol use is closely associated with socialisation …

Giving Students An Informed Choice When Selecting Teams For Group Work, Yuwanuch Gulatee, Martin Masek Jan 2014

Giving Students An Informed Choice When Selecting Teams For Group Work, Yuwanuch Gulatee, Martin Masek

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Most large scale software projects require team work. However, it is a common problem that, when forming teams in a university setting, students know little about each other, resulting in dysfunctional teams. To help alleviate this, we ran three small preliminary assignments before students formed a team for the last major project. The idea was to encourage students to work with a variety of group members before they could choose their final team. The results showed that half of the final groups had a makeup that changed from their first initial group

Mediating Legal Reform: Animal Law, Livestock Welfare And Public Pressure, Jane Mummery, Debbie Rodan, Katrina Ironside, Marnie Nolton Jan 2014

Mediating Legal Reform: Animal Law, Livestock Welfare And Public Pressure, Jane Mummery, Debbie Rodan, Katrina Ironside, Marnie Nolton

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Legal protection of animal welfare in Australia is problematic with livestock (defined here as all animals farmed for use and profit, including poultry and aquatic animals) being effectively excluded from the majority of animal protection statutes. Such legal exclusions, joined with the inherent challenges of legal reform in this field – significant issues to do with standing, costs bearing and jurisdiction – have increased the difficulties of successful litigation. Despite explicit recognition of the necessity for reform in Australian animal law – in 2008 the Australian Law Reform Commission journal, Reform, took as its subject the ‘next great social justice …

The Importance Of Positive Arts Experiences And Self-Efficacy In Pre-Service Primary Teacher Education, Geoffrey W. Lummis, Julia Morris

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

With the impending introduction of the Australian Curriculum in the arts, there is cause to reflect on primary pre-service teacher education courses, and how effectively they prepare graduates to facilitate the curriculum. Reflecting on pre-service teachers’ experiences in the arts, at both entry and graduation of their degree, may afford insight into improving arts instruction in Bachelor of Education. A two-year mixed methods study (2013-2014) was conducted with first and fourth-year Bachelor of Education primary students at a Western Australian university, to determine students’ arts experiences and their self-efficacy to teach the arts at graduation. This paper reports specifically on …

Diagnostically Assessing Western Australian Year 11 Students' Engagement With Theory In Visual Arts, Julia Morris, Geoffrey W. Lummis, Graeme J. Lock

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Theory linked to visual arts’ responding outcomes, is fundamental to the visual arts curriculum in facilitating visual literacy, or students’ ability to assemble meaning from, and construct new imagery. Without visual literacy, year 11 students are limited in understanding and fully participating in our technological, image-based society. Subsequently, a mixed methods doctoral study was undertaken to investigate students’ engagement in visual arts theory tasks, as increased engagement in theory was anticipated to improve students’ visual literacy outcomes. A diagnostic instrument was created to measure year 11 students’ prior learning in visual arts theory, as well as their cognitive and psychological …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Video-based classroom research is opening-up exciting new insights into how teachers generate productive opportunities for student engagement in quality learning, reasoning and the development of their scientific literacy. The significant role played by multimodal representations in learning and teaching becomes evident through the medium of video and its analysis. Classroom research that is framed from social constructivist, sociocultural, activity theory and social semiotic perspectives highlights the social interactions involving multimodal representations which are used to communicate science ideas and also act as semiotic resources for meaning making. Social and cognitive processes of co-constructing meaning are mediated by talk, embodied representations …
