Conover’S F Test As An Alternative To Durbin’S Test, Donald J. Best, John Charles Rayner Nov 2014

Conover’S F Test As An Alternative To Durbin’S Test, Donald J. Best, John Charles Rayner

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Data consisting of ranks within blocks are considered for balanced incomplete block designs. An F test statistic from ANOVA is better approximated by an F distribution than the Durbin statistic is approximated by a chi-squared distribution. Indicative powers demonstrate that the F test is generally superior to Durbin’s test.

Inter-Temporal Optimal Asset Allocation And Time-Varying Risk Aversion, Honglin Yang, Penglan Fang, Hong Wan, Yong Zha Nov 2014

Inter-Temporal Optimal Asset Allocation And Time-Varying Risk Aversion, Honglin Yang, Penglan Fang, Hong Wan, Yong Zha

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The inter-temporal optimal decision is related to investors risk preference. In this study, we analyze the optimal asset allocation over investment horizon of invariable risk preference indicated by constant risk aversion. To capture dynamic property of risk aversion, we relax the assumption of constant risk aversion and formulate a time-varying function in response to the impacts of time and wealth. Our general decision model built on time-varying risk aversion allows us to further investigate the inter-temporal optimal asset allocation. The numerical evidences from the model show that the optimal allocation of risky assets in portfolios is significantly related to investors …

Intelligent Decision Support For New Product Development: A Consumer-Oriented Approach, Yang-Cheng Lin, Chun-Chih Chen, Chung-Hsing Yeh Nov 2014

Intelligent Decision Support For New Product Development: A Consumer-Oriented Approach, Yang-Cheng Lin, Chun-Chih Chen, Chung-Hsing Yeh

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper presents a consumer-oriented design approach to determine the optimal form design of characteristic toys that best matches consumers’ preferences. The consumer-oriented design approach is based on the process of Kansei Engineering using neural networks (NNs) and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The NN model is used to build a design decision support database, and then an NN-based TOPSIS decision support model is used to enable product designers to obtain the optimal design alternatives that best meet consumers’ preferences for a new characteristic toy design.

Flourishing Rights, Wendy A. Bach Nov 2014

Flourishing Rights, Wendy A. Bach

Scholarly Works

Flourishing Rights reviews Clare Huntington’s Failure to Flourish: How Law Undermines Family Relationships, recently published by the Oxford University Press. This review explores the way that specific issues at the heart of the relationship between poor families and the state affects Huntington’s thesis and proposals. The review largely applauds the book but concludes that a robust form of rights protection, when combined with the impressive policy arguments Huntington marshals, might actually make real the audacious idea that everyone has a right to flourish.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article reviews the extent to which individuals from different geocultural regions view and identify affective components perceived to be important in today’s global society. Various regions of the world were categorized to ensure equivalent participation around the world. Eight geocultural regions were identified to compare responses by geographical regions to obtain information on possible differences. A questionnaire was administered to respondents in the eight geocultural regions to obtain their perceptions of important affective components needed in today’s global society. Based on this study, there were at least nine different affective components perceived to be important in today’s global society. …

The State As A Person?: Anthropomorphic Personification Vs. Concrete Durational Being, Robert Oprisko Ph.D., Kristopher Kaliher Nov 2014

The State As A Person?: Anthropomorphic Personification Vs. Concrete Durational Being, Robert Oprisko Ph.D., Kristopher Kaliher

Journal of International and Global Studies

In “The State as Person in International Theory,” Wendt explores the analysis and comparison of the classic unit of international relations to a human subject. In an unprecedented manner, Wendt takes his comparison to the limit, finding connections between the biological aspects of personhood as well as the social. In this essay, we use a structure similar to Wendt’s but come to different conclusions. Using the works of Searle’s intentionality and Mitzen’s ontological security, among others, we find that the social category of state personhood is determined to be both accurate and helpful for progressing IR theory. We depart from …

Music Education, Aesthetics, And The Measure Of Academic Achievement, Karl Madden, David Orenstein, Alexei Oulanov, Yelena Novitskaya, Ida Bazan, Thomas Ostrowski, Min Hyung Ahn Nov 2014

Music Education, Aesthetics, And The Measure Of Academic Achievement, Karl Madden, David Orenstein, Alexei Oulanov, Yelena Novitskaya, Ida Bazan, Thomas Ostrowski, Min Hyung Ahn

Publications and Research

Grades and test scores are the traditional measurement of academic achievement. Quantitative improvements on standardized scores in Math/Science/Language are highly-coveted outcomes for meeting accreditation standards required for institutional program funding. Music and the Fine Arts, difficult to assess by traditional academic achievement measurement, and often devalued as so-called “luxury” subjects, struggle for necessary funding. Showing measureable collateral value to other academic subjects—such as math—in order to justify music program funding is dubious. To objectify the purpose of music education in terms of its influence on other subjects is to overlook aesthetic value. The scholarly literature recognizes an historical tendency to …

Immediate Impacts Of Short-Term Study Abroad Programs On Students At A Small, Religious, Comprehensive University, Robert D. Larson Jr.

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This exploratory study examines the impact of short-term study abroad programs on students at one small, religious, comprehensive university on the West Coast. In particular, four dimensions of influence are investigated: academic impact, personal impact, social impact, and spiritual impact. The primary objective of this investigation is to determine whether the short term study abroad programs at this institution provide substantive opportunities for student growth in these four dimensions. A secondary objective utilizes Astin’s Student Involvement Theory to discover the extent to which student engagement affects this student growth. The literature review examines the impact of study abroad experiences in …

Power Of Equality Myths: A Transdisciplinary Study Examining The Influence Of Equality Policy On Teaching And Learning, Jennifer Gutiérrez Nov 2014

Power Of Equality Myths: A Transdisciplinary Study Examining The Influence Of Equality Policy On Teaching And Learning, Jennifer Gutiérrez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been steady interest in the ideology of equity in schooling practices reflected in the written artifacts of the United States, especially in the last thirty years. However, equality-laden language is often used without definition or critical examination. The assumed meaning of equality terminology is problematic--especially for classroom teachers who are directly held accountable for the practice of equality policy. This inquiry critically evaluates the multiple implications of this common-sense usage of language related to issues of equality, equity, sameness, and even democracy. Using the combined methodologies of educational criticism, critical discourse analysis, and self-ethnography, this transdisciplinary investigation describes, …

Improving The Effectiveness Of Sanctions: A Checklist For The Eu, Anthonius W. De Vries, Clara Portela, Borja Guijarro-Usobiaga Nov 2014

Improving The Effectiveness Of Sanctions: A Checklist For The Eu, Anthonius W. De Vries, Clara Portela, Borja Guijarro-Usobiaga

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The increasingly frequent imposition of sanctions by the EU over the past decade has notbeen accompanied by a thorough pre-assessment and contingency planning stage, which hasled to the formulation of suboptimal sanctions regimes. This paper argues for establishing apre-assessment and contingency planning of sanctions, departing from the ‘ad hoc-ism’ ofcurrent decision-making on sanctions. To this end, it proposes the development of a‘checklist’ composed of key questions that need to be tackled to optimise the design ofsanctions. These questions include the identification of resources linked to the objectionablepolicies; the leverage of the EU; the costs to the EU; the legality of …

Impact Of Working Memory Load On Cognitive Control In Trait Anxiety: An Erp Study, Senqing Qi, Qinghong Zeng, Yangmei Luo, Haijun Duan, Cody Ding, Weiping Hu, Hong Li Nov 2014

Impact Of Working Memory Load On Cognitive Control In Trait Anxiety: An Erp Study, Senqing Qi, Qinghong Zeng, Yangmei Luo, Haijun Duan, Cody Ding, Weiping Hu, Hong Li

Education Sciences and Professional Programs Faculty Works

Whether trait anxiety is associated with a general impairment of cognitive control is a matter of debate. This study investigated whether and how experimentally manipulated working memory (WM) load modulates the relation between trait anxiety and cognitive control. This question was investigated using a dual-task design in combination with eventrelated potentials. Participants were required to remember either one (low WM load) or six letters (high WM load) while performing a flanker task. Our results showed that a high WM load disrupted participants' ability to overcome distractor interference and this effect was exacerbated for the high trait-anxious (HTA) group. This exacerbation …

Rulers, Rhetoric, And Ray-Guns: A Post Colonial Look At 90'S Alien Invasion Media, Logan Matthew Hudspeth Nov 2014

Rulers, Rhetoric, And Ray-Guns: A Post Colonial Look At 90'S Alien Invasion Media, Logan Matthew Hudspeth

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis opens discussion on American alien invasion films of the 90s as a self-critique, a reaction to being an imperial power at the end of the Cold War. The alien menace in these films is not the "other" but rather the U.S. itself being the colonizer or conqueror looking to expand its sphere of influence. Furthermore, it discusses how Presidential rhetoric in the films play a role in this postcolonial reading. Specific works studied are: Independence Day (1996), Mars Attacks! (1996), Babylon 5: In the Beginning (1998), and The Puppet Masters (1994).

Middle School, School Culture, Parental Involvement, And The Academic Index, Jacob L. Clute Nov 2014

Middle School, School Culture, Parental Involvement, And The Academic Index, Jacob L. Clute

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research examines two possible influences of student achievement at the middle school level: school culture and parental involvement. The study investigates Kentucky Scholastic Audits of 90 middle schools from 2001 through 2005. The purpose of the study is to identify whether school culture and parental involvement affect student performance. The results of this study suggest that demographic variables account for most of the variance in the Academic Index. Controlling for demographics, parental involvement does not affect the school Academic Index, while school culture does add significantly to the variance explained.

Conflict Engagement: A Contingency Model In Theory And Practice, Jay Rothman Nov 2014

Conflict Engagement: A Contingency Model In Theory And Practice, Jay Rothman

Peace and Conflict Studies

The systematic study and applied practice of conflict resolution is now a few decades old and is evolving into its own field and perhaps towards its own discipline (Avruch, 2013). I believe an essential way forward towards a more robust field and discipline is to build a parsimonious contingency approach. That is, an approach for applying our best theoretical and analytical tools to diagnosing the nature and status of a given conflict and then systematically and adaptively matching up the best methods for constructively engaging the conflict as it evolves. Fisher and Keashly (1991) pioneered contingency theory in international conflict …

We The People: Juries, Not Judges, Should Be The Gatekeepers Of Expert Evidence, Krista M. Pikus Nov 2014

We The People: Juries, Not Judges, Should Be The Gatekeepers Of Expert Evidence, Krista M. Pikus

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note urges restoration of the proper balance of power between judges and juries regarding expert evidence. Our justice system has steadily moved away from letting juries decide important questions of fact and toward putting the decisionmaking power into the hands of judges. The recent developments in evidence law, requiring judges to act as the “gatekeepers” of expert evidence, present significant obstacles for plaintiffs attempting to get cases to a jury. This newer standard in expert evidence is a violation of the foundational precept in American jurisprudence that the people should be the sovereign, not the judge.

Defining And Assessing Animal Pain, Lynne U. Sneddon, Robert W. Elwood, Shelley A. Adamo, Matthew C. Leach

Experimentation Collection

The detection and assessment of pain in animals is crucial to improving their welfare in a variety of contexts in which humans are ethically or legally bound to do so. Thus clear standards to judge whether pain is likely to occur in any animal species is vital to inform whether to alleviate pain or to drive the refinement of procedures to reduce invasiveness, thereby minimizing pain. We define two key concepts that can be used to evaluate the potential for pain in both invertebrate and vertebrate taxa. First, responses to noxious, potentially painful events should affect neurobiology, physiology and behaviour …
