Mothers Of Sons With Substance Use Disorders: A Grounded Theory Approach Revealing Maternal Expectations And Three Stages Of Change, Judith A. Nelson, Richard C. Henriksen, Roseanne S. Keathley

The Qualitative Report

Addiction problems in a family present challenges in coping with the addicted family member's behaviors are often described in terms of the psychopathology of the interactions of the family members. The present article describes a qualitative study of the lived experiences of mothers whose male children have struggled or currently are struggling with chemical dependence. Our overall aim in the study was to explore critical stages or events in the experiences of these mothers relevant to their chemically dependent sons. As such, our research question was: What are the lived experiences of mothers of substance abusing sons who are either …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2014-11-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Understanding The Role Of Technology In The Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children: The Perspective Of Law Enforcement., Kimberly J. Mitchell, Dana Boyd

Crimes Against Children Research Center

This exploratory study was conducted to better assess how technology can be used in criminal investigations; it is important to get a better understanding of how technology is currently employed in child sex trafficking as well as the approaches and needs of law enforcement. 144 investigators from Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Forces and affiliate agencies responded to an online semi‐structured survey, including 45 investigators with experience conducting investigations of the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) that involved technology. Participants included investigators working in local, county, and state law enforcement agencies in the United States. The discussion suggested …

Religion’S Transformative Role In African Education: A Zambian Perspective, Brendan P. Carmody Nov 2014

Religion’S Transformative Role In African Education: A Zambian Perspective, Brendan P. Carmody

Zambia Social Science Journal

Although religion forms part of the educational curriculum in much of sub-Saharan Africa, its nature and role tend to be greatly restricted. By way of taking the situation at the University of Zambia (UNZA) as a case study, it will be argued that the teaching of religion as more truly conceptualized, as well as a person-centred pedagogy, can make a distinctive contribution and realize some of its transformative potential. This may provide a more appropriate paradigm for much needed transformative education in the region.

Universities Need To Do More To Prevent Heterosexism To Support Lgb Students’ Academic Success, M.R. Woodford Nov 2014

Universities Need To Do More To Prevent Heterosexism To Support Lgb Students’ Academic Success, M.R. Woodford

Clear Language Summaries

Heterosexism can affect lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) students’ academic success. Peer-group support and general faculty support do not protect students from the impacts of heterosexism, but is still important. To prevent poor academic outcomes, campuses must have spaces in which students feel safe to come out and heterosexism needs to be eliminated on campus.

Science And Rationality For One And All, P.D. Magnus Nov 2014

Science And Rationality For One And All, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

A successful scientific community might require different scientists to form different beliefs even when faced with the same evidence. The standard line is that this would create a conflict between the demands of collective rationality which scientists face as members of the community and the demands of individual rationality which they face as epistemic agents. This is expressed both by philosophers of science (working on the distribution of cognitive labor) and by epistemologists (working on the epistemology of disagreement). The standard line fails to take into account the relation between rational belief and various epistemic risks, values of which are …

Revisiting The Use Of Secondary Task Reaction Time Measures In Telepresence Research: Exploring The Role Of Immersion And Attention, Cheryl C. Bracken, Gary Pettey, Mu Wu

Communication Faculty Publications

In this experimental study, we use secondary task reaction time (STRT) to measure Attention to a media presentation and compare STRT to traditional self-report measures of Telepresence (immersion, social reality, spatial presence, and transportation) and enjoyment. Further, we compare the STRT measure with the composite items of Telepresence–Immersion. The results indicate that STRT may be useful for measuring some sub-dimensions of Telepresence. Implications are discussed.

Spanning The Complexity Chasm: A Research Approach To Move From Simple To Complex Engineering Systems, Vimal Viswanathan, Julie Linsey

Faculty Publications, Mechanical Engineering

A multistudy approach is presented that allows design thinking of complex systems to be studied by triangulating causal controlled lab findings with coded data from more complex products. A case study illustration of this approach is provided. During the conceptual design of engineering systems, designers face many cognitive challenges, including design fixation, errors in their mental models, and the sunk cost effect. These factors need to be mitigated for the generation of effective ideas. Understanding the effects of these challenges in a realistic and complex engineering system is especially difficult due to a variety of factors influencing the results. Studying …

Social Desire Paths: A New Theoretical Concept To Increase The Usability Of Social Science Research In Society, Laura Nichols Nov 2014

Social Desire Paths: A New Theoretical Concept To Increase The Usability Of Social Science Research In Society, Laura Nichols

Sociology

Social scientists are well-trained to observe and chart social trends, but less experienced at presenting scientific findings in formats that can inform social change work. In this article, I propose a new theoretical concept that provides a mechanism by which social science research can be more effectively applied for proactive policy, organizational, and program development. The approach is to use the metaphor of “desire paths” from landscape architecture to show how social scientists can identify and analyze social desire paths that appear on the social structural landscape. Social desire paths usually emerge because existing formal structures do not meet individual …

The findings highlight the challenges and opportunities currently faced on US campuses, thereby making a timely contribution to efforts at developing students’ readiness to be successful in a global and multicultural environment.

Retained-Components Factor Transformation: Factor Loadings And Factor Score Predictors In The Column Space Of Retained Components, André Beauducel, Frank Spohn Nov 2014

Retained-Components Factor Transformation: Factor Loadings And Factor Score Predictors In The Column Space Of Retained Components, André Beauducel, Frank Spohn

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Factor loadings optimally account for the non-diagonal elements of the covariance matrix of observed variables. Principal component analysis leads to components accounting for a maximum of the variance of the observed variables. Retained-components factor transformation is proposed in order to combine the advantages of factor analysis and principal component analysis.

Pairwise Comparison In Repeated Measures, I.C.A. Oyeka, C. C. Nnanatu Nov 2014

Pairwise Comparison In Repeated Measures, I.C.A. Oyeka, C. C. Nnanatu

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Sometimes a random sample of subjects or patients may be exposed to a battery of diagnostic tests or medication over time and interest is on determining whether there is progressive remission of condition, disease or symptom. Also perhaps early in a program or experiment, subjects or candidates may be required to significantly improve in their performance rates at the current trial relative to an immediately preceding trial, otherwise they may have to withdraw from or drop out. The research interest would then be to determine some critical minimum marginal success rate to guide the management in decision making as well …

A Comparison Of Methods For Group Prediction With High Dimensional Data, Holmes Finch Nov 2014

A Comparison Of Methods For Group Prediction With High Dimensional Data, Holmes Finch

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

High dimensional data is the situation in which the number of variables included in an analysis approaches or exceeds the sample size. In the context of group classification, researchers are typically interested in finding a model that can be used to correctly place an individual into their appropriate group; e.g. correctly diagnose individuals with depression. However, when the size of the training sample is small and the number of predictors used to differentiate the groups is larger, standard approaches such as discriminant analysis may not work well. In order to address this issue, statisticians have developed a number of tools …

Some General Guidelines For Choosing Missing Data Handling Methods In Educational Research, Jehanzeb R. Cheema Nov 2014

Some General Guidelines For Choosing Missing Data Handling Methods In Educational Research, Jehanzeb R. Cheema

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The effect of a number of factors, such as the choice of analytical method, the handling method for missing data, sample size, and proportion of missing data, were examined to evaluate the effect of missing data treatment on accuracy of estimation. A methodological approach involving simulated data was adopted. One outcome of the statistical analyses undertaken in this study is the formulation of easy-to-implement guidelines for educational researchers that allows one to choose one of the following factors when all others are given: sample size, proportion of missing data in the sample, method of analysis, and missing data handling method.

The Information Criterion, Masume Ghahramani Nov 2014

The Information Criterion, Masume Ghahramani

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The Akaike information criterion, AIC, is widely used for model selection. Using the AIC as the estimator of asymptotic unbias for the second term Kullbake-Leibler risk considers the divergence between the true model and offered models. However, it is an inconsistent estimator. A proposed approach the problem is the use of A'IC, a consistently offered information criterion. Model selection of classic and linear models are considered by a Monte Carlo simulation.
