Testosterone Reactivity And Neural Activation In The Mid Task, Yoojin Lee
Testosterone Reactivity And Neural Activation In The Mid Task, Yoojin Lee
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the project was to determine if testosterone reactivity and neural changes could be observed in response to a reward-seeking competitive task, respectively, and whether testosterone was related to neural activation. Forty nine undergraduate students were recruited playing the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID). We found that a subset of participants (N=20) showed testosterone reactivity to the task (ps < .05). During the EEG analyses, cue had a main effect on FRN amplitude in a trend level (p = .084): The large incentive cue triggered smaller (less negative) FRN amplitude than the small incentive cue did (p < .05), especially during the second reward seeking block (A’) (p = .065) and especially within males (p < .05). Testosterone level and reactivity were not further associated with FRN amplitude (ps > .1). Taken together, results show both testosterone and …
Modal Characterization And Structural Dynamic Response Of A Crane Fly Forewing, Jose E. Rubio
Modal Characterization And Structural Dynamic Response Of A Crane Fly Forewing, Jose E. Rubio
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study describes a method for conducting the structural dynamic analysis of a crane fly (family Tipulidae) forewing under different airflow conditions. Wing geometry is captured via micro-computed tomography scanning. A finite element model of the forewing is developed from the reconstructed model of the scan. The finite element model is validated by comparing the natural frequencies of an elliptical membrane with similar dimensions of the crane fly forewing to its analytical solution. Furthermore, a simulation of the fluid-structure interaction of the forewing under different airflows is performed by coupling the finite element model of the wing with a …
Stratified Turbulence In The Nearshore Coastal Ocean: Dynamics And Evolution In The Presence Of Internal Bores, Ryan K. Walter, Michael E. Squibb, C. Brock Woodson, Jeffrey R. Koseff, Stephen G. Monismith
Stratified Turbulence In The Nearshore Coastal Ocean: Dynamics And Evolution In The Presence Of Internal Bores, Ryan K. Walter, Michael E. Squibb, C. Brock Woodson, Jeffrey R. Koseff, Stephen G. Monismith
Physics
High-frequency measurements of stratified turbulence throughout the water column were collected over a 2 week period in the nearshore environment of southern Monterey Bay, CA, using a cabled observatory system and an underwater turbulence flux tower. The tower contained a vertical array of acoustic Doppler velocimeters and fast-response conductivity-temperature sensors, providing a nearly continuous data set of turbulent velocity and density fluctuations and a unique look into the stratified turbulence field. The evolution of various turbulence quantities and direct measurements of the vertical turbulent diffusivity is examined in the presence of nearshore internal bores, both in the near-bed region and …

Impact Of Hub Location On The Performance Of Wireless Body Area Networks For Fitness Applications, Vit Sipal, Domenico Gaetano, Patrick Mcevoy, Max Ammann
Articles
This letter compares the propagation properties of Wireless Body Area Networks for three different locations (head, foot and waist) of the hub/internet gateway on the human body. The wireless channels between the hubs and four nodes (chest, back, and upper arms) are measured on a female and a male subject performing push-ups and squats. A framework using spider plots is used for cumulative performance description. The results show that the best overall performance is for hub located on the left temple and the worst overall performance is achieved for a hub on the waist. These results are expected to stimulate …
A Gis-Centric Approach For Modeling Vessel Management Behavior System Data To Determine Oyster Vessel Behavior On Public Oyster Grounds In Louisiana, David X. Gallegos
A Gis-Centric Approach For Modeling Vessel Management Behavior System Data To Determine Oyster Vessel Behavior On Public Oyster Grounds In Louisiana, David X. Gallegos
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The satellite communications system called the Vessel Management System was used to provide geospatial data on oyster fishing over the nearly 1.7 million acres of the public water bottoms in Louisiana. An algorithm to analyze the data was developed in order to model vessel behaviors including docked, gearing, fishing and traveling. Vessel speeds were calculated via the Haversine formula at small and large intervals and compared to derive a measure of linearity. The algorithm was implemented into software using Python and inserted into a PostgreSQL database supporting geospatial information. Queries were developed to obtain reports on vessel activities and daily …

Gas Detection Applications Of Vertically Aligned Metal Oxide Nanowire Arrays, Haiqiao Su
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
To build novel electronic noses for mimicking biological olfactory systems that consist of olfactory receptor arrays with large surface area and massively-diversified chemical reactivity, three dimensional (3D) vertical aligned ZnO nanowire arrays were employed as active materials for gas detection. ZnO nanowire arrays share 3D structures similar to mammalian olfactory receptor arrays, with thousands of vertical nanowires providing a high reception area which can significantly enhance the sensors’ sensitivity. Meanwhile, with different material decorations (such as SnO2, In2O3, WO3 and polymers), each array of nanowires can produce a distinguishable response for each separate …

Passivation Of Amorphous Indium-Gallium-Zinc Oxide (Igzo) Thin-Film Transistors, Nathaniel Walsh
Passivation Of Amorphous Indium-Gallium-Zinc Oxide (Igzo) Thin-Film Transistors, Nathaniel Walsh
Theses
Thin-film transistors (TFTs) with channel materials made out of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) have been extensively investigated. Amorphous silicon continues to dominate the large-format display technology; however newer technologies demand a higher performance TFT which a-Si:H cannot deliver due to its low electron mobility, µn ~ 1 cm2/V*s. Metal-oxide materials such as Indium-Gallium-Zinc Oxide (IGZO) have demonstrated semiconductor properties, and are candidates to replace a Si:H for TFT backplane technologies.
This work involves the fabrication and characterization of TFTs utilizing a-IGZO deposited by RF sputtering. An overview of the process details and results from recently fabricated …
What Happened To Atlantic City’S Gaming Volume?, Toni Repetti, Soyeon Jung
What Happened To Atlantic City’S Gaming Volume?, Toni Repetti, Soyeon Jung
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Atlantic City casinos were hit by the 2007-2009 recession and the addition of legalized gaming in Pennsylvania at about the same time. Results of this study show the opening of the first three Pennsylvania casinos significantly decreased slot coin-in in Atlantic City while the legalization of table games and the opening of the fourth casino significantly decreased table games drop. After taking this into account, the recession had no significant effect on Atlantic City casino volume. To counteract decreased volumes, casino management needs to understand how much gaming volume they are losing to competition and how much to the recession.

One custom which has outlived the passage of time, wars, petty differences, famine, and flood is the good old family reunion. This is a time when grandparents, grandchildren, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, aunts, uncles, cousins, all get together for a short period of time, perhaps a day, perhaps more.
Athletics' Place In Education, Robert R. Mundell
Athletics' Place In Education, Robert R. Mundell

The question asked by college students, college athletes, college faculty members, and the world at large is, "What is the place athletics should hold in our present (lay educational system, or do athletics belong at all in the college program?" The question is a natural one because there exist arguments pro and con. I believe the arguments for athletics far outweigh those listed against them.

Sam was a foreigner employed at the steel mill in my home town but no one seemed to know his nationality. He was one of the "wops" which meant that he was from one of those mysterious countries in southeastern Europe. This was obvious from his physical characteristics and his accent. Sam was short and stocky with the heavy shoulders of one who earns his living by manual labor.

"Hello there, Norma. Can you wait a few seconds while I finish?" asked Bomar Cramer, Indianapolis' foremost pianist, as he suddenly emerged from his studio into his reception room. He extended a firm, warm hand into which I meekly put my cold one, and then he quickly disappeared again into his studio as I faintly murmured, "Why, certainly." I had been waiting for Mr. Cramer for about five minutes, and during this time, I surveyed his outer surroundings. The room was rather dark and was entered from the outside through a heavily-draped glass partitioned door. Directly opposite the chair in …

In the highest mountains of the Alps there lies a tiny village, isolated and remote from the rest of the continent. Many legends weave themselves about the snow covered peaks and crags, a few stretching into the villages and tangling themselves in the minds of the people. But the village of which I speak is too self-contained even for legends. There, the people, protected by their environment, are secured against false imaginings and petty schemes. They go about their daily work oblivious to both the perils and the beauty which may lie on the other side of their mountains. Their …

Scale As A Key Factor For Sustainable Water Management In Northwest Honduras, E. Christian Wells, Karla L. Davis-Salazar, Jose E. Moreno-Cortes
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
In northwest Honduras, community-based interventions by outside development agencies seeking to assist communities with the treatment and delivery of potable water have been largely ineffective. This article examines the social, economic, ecological, and engineered contexts of gravity-fed water systems in the Palmarejo Valley of this region, identifying key barriers to long-term sustainability. Drawing from the results of our mixed-methods research in the valley incorporating ethnographic and spatial analyses along with water quality testing, we outline the limitations of community-based development approaches that ignore the broader social and political scales of resource inequalities. We find that water provisioning often requires coordination …

I was the long desired baby sister with the "tan" hair. My brother, who was six years old at the time of my birth, had ordered me specially. Because he greatly admired the blond baby sister of one of his boy friends, he made numerous and serious appeals and accepted my arrival with the same enthusiasm as he had displayed when given his highly-prized, red tricycle. Although most people called me a "towhead," Bob still considered me his little sister with the "tan" hair.

Dynamics Of Wind-Driven Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Variability, Jian Zhao
Dynamics Of Wind-Driven Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Variability, Jian Zhao
Open Access Dissertations
The dynamical processes governing the wind-driven Atlantic Meridional Overtuning Circulation (AMOC) variability are studied using observations and a variety of models, ranging from a simple forced Rossby wave model to an eddy-resolving Ocean General Circulation Model(OGCM). To better identify the mechansims for the AMOC variability at different time scales, the AMOC is decomposed into Ekman and geostrophic transport components. On seasonal time scale, the AMOC varability is determined by both components in the extratropics but dominated by the Ekman transport in the tropics. While the Ekman transport is directly related to zonal wind stress seasonality, the comparison between different numerical …

The focus of this thesis can be categorized as study of two molecules, namely human insulin and carbon dots at 1) air-water interface as a Langmuir monolayer and 2) in solution. Aggregation of proteins into amyloids has been related to several diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Amyloidosis. Human insulin was chosen as a model protein to study fibrillation of the proteins. Effect of carbon dots on the rate of human insulin fibrillation was examined through spectroscopic techniques and imaging. Both human insulin and carbon dots were examined at air-water interface as a Langmuir monolayer. The conformation of human insulin in …
