Determination Of The Expression Patterns Of The Nine Csp Genes In Escherichia Coli K-12 Mg1655 And The Growth Defects Associated With Deletion Of These Genes, Tiffany R Czapski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cold-shock proteins (CSPs) are a family of small nucleic acid-binding proteins. In Escherichia coli K-12, there are 9 homologous csp genes named A-I. Aside from microarray studies, transcript levels from all nine csp genes have never been assayed using the same technique. The objectives of this study were to determine when these genes are expressed, if homologous pairs are expressed the same, how many are cold-shock inducible, and if there is a ranking of importance for these genes. To answer these questions, I determined csp mRNA expression patterns for all nine csp genes during normal growth at 37°C, and after …
Treatment-Related Decisional Conflict, Quality Of Life, And Comorbid Illness In Older Adults With Cancer, Jeannette Kates
Treatment-Related Decisional Conflict, Quality Of Life, And Comorbid Illness In Older Adults With Cancer, Jeannette Kates
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the aging population the nation increases, cancer diagnoses in this age group will also increase. The many chronic medical conditions associated with older adults will be confounded by a diagnosis of cancer. Older adults with cancer are at risk for physical, psychological, and functional decline as a result of not only the cancer, but also the cancer treatment. This study utilized a cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study design to explore the relationships between and among treatment-related decisional conflict, quality of life and comorbidity in older adults with cancer. An anonymous survey method was employed. The criteria for inclusion in this …

Effects Of Spatiotemporal Resource Heterogeneity On Home Range Size Of American Beaver, L. F. Mcclintic, J. D. Taylor Ii, J. C. Jones, R. D. Singleton, G. Wang
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Home range size of terrestrial animals may be influenced by spatiotemporal dynamics of resources. However, little is known regarding the effects of spatiotemporal resource availability on semi-aquatic central place foragers such as the American beaver Castor canadensis. From January 2011 to April 2012, 26 beavers at 11 wetlands at Redstone Arsenal in north-central Alabama, USA, were captured and radio-tracked using radio telemetry. The objectives of this study were to test the predictions of three hypotheses: (1) the resource dispersion hypothesis: more spatially dispersed resources throughout a landscape increase home range sizes; (2) the temporal resource variability hypothesis: more temporally …

Responses By Wild House Mice (Mus Musculus) To Variousstimuli In A Novel Environment, Gary W. Witmer, Nathan P. Snow, Rachael S. Moulton
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
House mice (Mus musculus) pose a threat to the native flora and fauna on islands, and cancause significant damage wherever they have been introduced. Methods used to eradicateinvasive rodents, like house mice, at high population densities may not be appropriate forintercepting them at lower densities. A better understanding of the immediate behavior ofhouse mice when first introduced to a novel environment would help managers developeffective biosecurity techniques to protect against new invasions. To address this problem,we conducted a controlled laboratory experiment that simulated an invasion by wild housemice into a novel environment. We quantified and compared the immediate …
Sowing The Seeds Of Protection, Elizabeth I. Winston
Sowing The Seeds Of Protection, Elizabeth I. Winston
Scholarly Articles
Seeds are chattel. As such, seeds are protectable by the same tapestry of public and private ordering as other forms of chattel. However, the distinguishing characteristic of seeds, their method of propagation, and the history of seeds-traditionally viewed as a public good rather than chatteldistort that tapestry. The model of seed distribution thus needs to be refrained in light of the often disparate interests of innovators, producers, and consumers. As with all chattel, there is no single, correct model for distributing seeds, but law and contract may be woven together to strike a balance.
Re-Negotiating A Theory Of Social Contract For Universal Health Care In America Or, Securing The Regulatory State?, George P. Smith Ii
Re-Negotiating A Theory Of Social Contract For Universal Health Care In America Or, Securing The Regulatory State?, George P. Smith Ii
Scholarly Articles
Political ideologies and evolving notions of social justice have shaped public health policies throughout American history in a quest to find a point of balance between the collective good and economic realities. In pursuit of this balance, Congress enacted the Affordable Care Act in 2010. This Article first examines the new law through the lens of the social contract as envisioned by Rousseau and adopted by the Framers of the Constitution. Using economic data, public opinion, and information from the medical community, Smith and Gallena proceed to offer a frank appraisal of the state of health care in America and …
Effectiveness Of Physical Therapy Intervention Following Partial Medial Meniscectomy: A Case Report, Alexa Risan
Effectiveness Of Physical Therapy Intervention Following Partial Medial Meniscectomy: A Case Report, Alexa Risan
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background and Purpose. Partial meniscectomy is a very commonly performed surgical procedure and many cases are uncomplicated and successfully treated with home-based exercise programs. However, some patients experience more significant problems following surgery and require rehabilitation services. Research is limited regarding physical therapy (PT) effectiveness in the post-operative management of such complicated cases. This case report aims to evaluate the effectiveness of PT treatment of a 34-year-old male with significant impairments and functional limitations following partial medial meniscectomy.
Case Description. Examination and evaluation included ROM/flexibility and strength measurements as well as functional assessment. PT included therapeutic exercise which was aimed …

The Spirit Of The Buffalo: The Past And Future Of An American Plains Icon, William Holland
Animal Law Review
Though bison are iconically associated with the United States, their historical fortunes have often been opposite those of the U.S. As the nation expanded westward, government policy, demand for bison products, and changing land use perilously reduced bison numbers. Efforts to restore bison have been complicated by overlapping legal concerns: state, federal, tribal, and constitutional. This Note examines the legal context surrounding bison restoration, focusing particularly on the critical herd connected with Yellowstone National Park. Former members of the Yellowstone herd, in turn, are the subjects of the Montana Supreme Court's 2013 ruling in Citizens for Balanced Use v. Maurier, …
A Negative Effect Of A Pathogen On Its Vector? A Plant Pathogen Increases The Vulnerability Of Its Vector To Attack By Natural Enemies, Camila F. De Oliveira, Elizabeth Y. Long, Deborah L. Finke
A Negative Effect Of A Pathogen On Its Vector? A Plant Pathogen Increases The Vulnerability Of Its Vector To Attack By Natural Enemies, Camila F. De Oliveira, Elizabeth Y. Long, Deborah L. Finke
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Plant pathogens that are dependent on arthropod vectors for transmission from host to host may enhance their own success by promoting vector survival and/or performance. The effect of pathogens on vectors may be direct or indirect, with indirect effects mediated by increases in host quality or reductions in the vulnerability of vectors to natural enemies. We investigated whether the bird cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi, a vector of cereal yellow dwarf virus (CYDV) in wheat, experiences a reduction in rates of attack by the parasitoid wasp Aphidius colemani when actively harboring the plant pathogen. We manipulated the vector status of aphids …
Effect Of Brassica Vegetable Intake On The 2:16Α Estrogen Metabolite Ratio In Postmenopausal European American And African American Women, Kendrea Knight
Effect Of Brassica Vegetable Intake On The 2:16Α Estrogen Metabolite Ratio In Postmenopausal European American And African American Women, Kendrea Knight
Theses and Dissertations
Background: It is well-established that many risk factors for breast cancer are related to estrogen or reproductive factors. Two estrogen metabolites of particular interest are 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE) and 16α-hydroxyestrone (16α-OHE) which are often reported together as a ratio of 2:16α-hydroxyestrone (2:16α –OHE). It has been demonstrated in several studies that postmenopausal women who are at a higher risk of breast cancer tend to have increased levels of 16α-OHE or decreased levels of 2-OHE levels in the body. Recent studies have shown that the phytochemical indole-3-carbinol (I3C), found in Brassica vegetables, impacts the conversion of 2-OHE, known as “good estrogen”, by …

History, External Influence And Political Volatility In The Central African Republic (Car), Henry Kam Kah
Journal for the Advancement of Developing Economies
This paper examines the complex involvement of neighbours and other states in the leadership or political crisis in the CAR through a content analysis. It further discusses the repercussions of this on the unity and leadership of the country. The CAR has, for a long time, been embroiled in a crisis that has impeded the unity of the country. It is a failed state in Africa to say the least, and the involvement of neighbouring and other states in the crisis in one way or the other has compounded the multifarious problems of this country. Some of these states have …

Determinants Of Non-Oil Export And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Application Of The Bound Test Approach, Samson Adeniyi Aladejare, Abdulwahab Saidi
Journal for the Advancement of Developing Economies
The effects of the recent global economic crises on Nigeria’s economy have reaffirmed the urgent need for economic diversification in the country. Although no country is immune to such global crises, the over reliance on oil export revenue by Nigeria expose her economy excessively to external shocks. Therefore, this research examines the impact of aggregate non-oil sector and its determinant on economic growth. The bound test approach was explored to examine the long and short run effects of the non-oil export and its ensuing determinants. The result reveals a significant effect of non-oil export on economic growth in both the …

Chromosomes of four rare and localized Caribbean Prioninae (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) species were analysed. All have 26, XY karyotypes. Those of Solenoptera canaliculata (Solenopterini) from Guadeloupe nearby islands Les Saintes and Marie-Galante and S. quadrilineata from Martinique look similar. They have a single pair of sub-metacentric autosomes. The karyotype of S. touroulti from St. Lucia has three sub-metacentric pairs. It appears closer to that of Hovorodon maxillosum (Mallodontini) from Marie-Galante which has ten sub-metacentric pairs. The CO1 gene sequence, taking two European species Aegosoma scabricorne (Prioninae: Aegosomatini) and Ergates faber (Prioninae: Ergatini) as external groups was analysed in S. canaliculata and …

Deep-Sea Octopus (Graneledone Boreopacifica) Conducts The Longest-Known Egg-Brooding Period Of Any Animal, Bruce Robison, Brad Seibel, Jeffrey Drazen
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Octopuses typically have a single reproductive period and then they die (semelparity). Once a clutch of fertilized eggs has been produced, the female protects and tends them until they hatch. In most shallow-water species this period of parental care can last from 1 to 3 months, but very little is known about the brooding of deep-living species. In the cold, dark waters of the deep ocean, metabolic processes are often slower than their counterparts at shallower depths. Extrapolations from data on shallow-water octopus species suggest that lower temperatures would prolong embryonic development periods. Likewise, laboratory studies have linked lower temperatures …
The Right To Food And The Political Economy Of Third World States, Opeoluwa Adetoro Badaru
The Right To Food And The Political Economy Of Third World States, Opeoluwa Adetoro Badaru
The Transnational Human Rights Review
Current global events validate the fact that beyond a theoretical analysis of rights discourse and food justice, there is a need to understand and propose ways to address the very fragile global food situation, and especially so in Third World states. At the peak of the high food prices in mid-2008, the world observed how the issue of access to food and the means to acquire food (in the larger context of other socio-economic needs) spurred riots from Egypt to Bangladesh and Mexico. And one cannot definitely say that we are out of the woods yet concerning rising food prices. …

Visualizing And Predicting The Effects Of Rheumatoid Arthritis On Hands, Radu P. Mihail
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
This dissertation was inspired by difficult decisions patients of chronic diseases have to make about about treatment options in light of uncertainty. We look at rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic, autoimmune disease that primarily affects the synovial joints of the hands and causes pain and deformities. In this work, we focus on several parts of a computer-based decision tool that patients can interact with using gestures, ask questions about the disease, and visualize possible futures. We propose a hand gesture based interaction method that is easily setup in a doctor's office and can be trained using a custom set of …
