Before You Begin
Every aspiring gardener should follow seven steps to have a successful gardening season:
- Plan your garden on paper before you begin.
- Select a good gardening site that is:
a. in full sun for at least eight hours each day,
b. relatively level,
c. well‑drained,
d. close to a water source,
e. not shaded. - Prepare the soil properly and add fertilizer and lime according to soil test recommendations.
- Plan only as large a garden as you can easily maintain. Beginning gardeners often overplant, and then they fail because they cannot keep up with the tasks required. Weeds and …
Long-Term Trends Of Participation In Physical Activity During Adolescence With Educational Ambition And Attainment, Frances Jillian Priesmeyer
Long-Term Trends Of Participation In Physical Activity During Adolescence With Educational Ambition And Attainment, Frances Jillian Priesmeyer
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Insufficient physical activity is a serious concern for the youth of this nation. In 2008, more than one third of children and adolescents could be classified as either obese or overweight (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). Poor nutrition and lack of physical activity are two major factors contributing to this epidemic. A physically active lifestyle during youth not only improves physical health, but has also been shown to improve emotional health, behavior, and academic performance. It is important that this area of research is continued and expanded so appropriate educational policies that support the health and well-being of …
Food Shopping Habits And The Association With Diet, Crystal Danielle West
Food Shopping Habits And The Association With Diet, Crystal Danielle West
Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems
Research suggests that the connection between poor diet and obesity among rural residents may be partially explained by limited access to healthy foods including fruits and vegetables (F&V). Based on federal suggestions to improve access, the purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between food shopping habits food venues and dietary intake of residents in rural counties of Kentucky. In May, 2013, a telephone survey was conducted using random-digit dial methods among n=149 participants in all three counties. Results showed that grocery shopping at supermarkets had a moderate positive correlation with F&V intake (r=.357, .348). These findings suggest …

Virtual Coaching In Guatemala: Can It Be Effective For Changing Targeted Teacher Behaviors?, Ruby Owiny
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
The education system in Guatemala struggles to meet the needs of students with disabilities. There are often not enough trained special educators to meet the demand. In addition, general educators are often not trained to adequately meet diverse needs in their classrooms. Thus, schools are often unable to fully meet the needs of students with disabilities. This study sought to identify a method by which teachers could be virtually trained on a teacher behavior (i.e., specific praise) that could help meet diverse student needs. A multiple probe design across participants was used to determine if virtual training could be effective …

New Evidence On Why Children's Food Security Varies Across Households With Similar Incomes, Diane Whitmore Schanzenbach, Patricia M. Anderson, Kristin F. Butcher, Hilary W. Hoynes
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
This project examines why very low food security status among children is different across households with very similar measured resources. Controlling for measures of income-to-needs, we examine whether elements in the!environment, household characteristics, or behaviors are systematically correlated with VLFS among children. We use different measures of income-to-needs, including those averaged across years to capture “permanent” income (or to average out measurement error) and measures that include income after taxes and transfers. Our analysis uses the Current Population Survey (across many years, matched December to March), the American Time Use Survey (matched to the December CPS), the National Health and …

Influence Of Natural Zeolite On Nitrogen Dynamics In Soil, Stanislav Torma, Jozef Vilcek, Peter Adamisin, Emilia Huttmanova, Ondrej Hronec
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Sorption of the cations NH_4^+, Al^{3+}, Fe^{2+}, Mn^{2+}, and Mg^{2+} in powdered zeolite and its mixture with soil was monitored. More than 90% of the observed cations were fixed in the zeolite in the first few minutes of the laboratory experiment, which is a very fast speed of sorption, and the ammonia cations reacted fastest. Consequently, the dynamics of the nitrate and ammoniac nitrogen in soil after application of zeolite in different amounts was monitored. A decreased ammonium content was apparent in the variants with zeolite 1 month after zeolite application in comparison with variants without zeolite owing to the …

Identifying The Characterestics Of Patients With Community Versus Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcers, Ahmad A. Hamdan
Nursing Dissertations - Archive
Pressure ulcers (PU) are a common problem with important implications for the nursing community and for patients, including pain and suffering, delayed recovery, morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs, but little is known regarding what characterizes the difference between community acquired pressure ulcers (CAPU) and hospital acquired pressure ulcers (HAPU). Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive correlational retrospective study was to describe patient characteristics associated with CAPU and HAPU. Measured variables included gender, age, ethnicity, PU site, albumin, weight, BMI insurance, length of stay, type of bed, type of admission, and weekend admission, as well as Braden Scale measures of moisture, …
Could Animal Production Become A Profession?, David Fraser
Could Animal Production Become A Profession?, David Fraser
General – Farm Animal Issues
In the industrialized countries, the intensification of animal production has been widely perceived as a shift from agrarian to industrial production, and the public concerns and policy responses that resulted have closely paralleled the much earlier responses to the Industrial Revolution. During the Industrial Revolution, various concerns arose over the welfare of workers in factories, and the main policy response was a program of legislated controls on factory environments and hours of work. Intensive animal production led to similar concerns over the welfare of animals, and a major policy response has involved standards and regulations for the animals’ physical environment …

Triacylglycerol (TAG) metabolism is a key aspect of intracellular lipid homeostasis in yeast and mammals, but its role in vegetative tissues of plants remains poorly defined. We previously reported that PHOSPHOLIPID:DIACYLGLYCEROL ACYLTRANSFERASE1 (PDAT1) is crucial for diverting fatty acids (FAs) from membrane lipid synthesis to TAG and thereby protecting against FA-induced cell death in leaves. Here, we show that overexpression of PDAT1 enhances the turnover of FAs in leaf lipids. Using the trigalactosyldiacylglycerol1-1 (tgd1-1) mutant, which displays substantially enhanced PDAT1- mediated TAG synthesis, we demonstrate that disruption of SUGAR-DEPENDENT1 (SDP1) TAG lipase or PEROXISOMAL TRANSPORTER1 (PXA1) severely decreases …

Off Target Effects Of Sulforaphane Include The De-Repression Of Long-Terminal Repeats Through Histone Acetylation Events, Scott Baier, Richard Zbasnik, Vicki Schlegel, Janos Zempleni
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Sulforaphane is a naturally occurring isothiocyanate in cruciferous vegetables. Sulforaphane inhibits histone deacetylases, leading to the transcriptional activation of genes including tumor suppressor genes. The compound has attracted considerable attention in the chemoprevention of prostate cancer. Here we tested the hypothesis that sulforaphane is not specific for tumor suppressor genes but also activates loci such as long terminal repeats (LTRs), which might impair genome stability. Studies were conducted using chemically pure sulforaphane in primary human IMR-90 fibroblasts and in broccoli sprout feeding studies in healthy adults. Sulforaphane (2.0 μM) caused an increase in LTR transcriptional activity in cultured cells. Consumption …

The Rise Of Human Rights Education: Opportunities, Challenges, And Future Possibilities, Lindsey N. Kingston
Societies Without Borders
Human rights education (HRE) has gained increasing support as a tool for promoting social responsibility and global respect for international human rights standards. Many schools and universities include HRE in their curricula in an attempt to foster a sense of global citizenship among students, yet educators still grapple with how to most effectively include human rights in undergraduate programs. In an attempt to provide resources and to promote effective HRE, this article examines the rise of human rights education and analyzes its potential for positive change. In particular, high impact learning practices (such as community partnerships and short-term study abroad …
Making Visible The Invisible: Nighttime Lights Data And The Closing Of The Human Rights Information Gap, Xi Chen
Societies Without Borders
War, poverty, geographical remoteness and political isolation all contribute to unreliable or non-existent data for developing regions of the world. As a consequence, research within these areas has been hampered by an abject lack of data in underdeveloped regions. The satellite-based nighttime lights data introduced here may hold the potential to overcome this problem by providing a proxy measure for large numbers of variables dealing with second and third generation human rights issues. The images presented here represent some of the newest forms of data available to social science investigations and those interested in human rights studies, and are already …

The Prevalence Of Antibodies Against Wheat And Milk Proteins In Blood Donors And Their Contribution To Neuroimmune Reactivities, Aristo Vojdani, Datis Kharrazian, Partha Sarathi Mukherjee
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The aim of this study was to look for the presence of IgG, IgM, and IgA antibodies against two widely consumed foods, wheat and milk, in a relatively large number of specimens. As wheat, milk, and their antigens have been found to be involved in neuroimmune disorders, we measured the co-occurrence of their antibodies against various neural antigens. We assessed the reactivity of sera from 400 donors to wheat and milk proteins, GAD-65, cerebellar, MBP, and MOG. Statistical analysis showed significant clustering when certain wheat and milk protein antibodies were cross-referenced with neural antibodies. Approximately half of the sera with …

High-Sulfur In Beef Cattle Diets: A Review, M. E. Drewnoski, D. J. Pogge, S. L. Hansen
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
While many cattle feeding areas in the United States have long dealt with high sulfate water, increased feeding of ethanol co-products such as distillers grains with solubles to beef cattle has led to a corresponding increase in dietary sulfur. As a result, sulfur metabolism in the ruminant has been the focus of many research studies over the past ten years, and advances in our knowledge have been made. Excessive sulfur in cattle diets may have implications on trace mineral absorption, dry matter intake, and overall cattle growth. This review will focus on what we have learned about the metabolism of …

Millennium Development Goal 4, Children's Health And Implementation Challenges In Africa: Does A Human Rights Based Appoach Suffice?, Obi Nnamuchi
Loyola University Chicago International Law Review
That the state of children’s health in Africa is abysmal is incontrovertible. Proof, if there is need for one, is the perennial underperformance of the vast majority of countries in the region in key dimensions of children’s health and wellbeing. Nonetheless, the point of interest in health policy literature is not on the underperformance per se but on the underlying causes and possible antidotes – a reason Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 4 (on reducing child mortality) holds special significance for countries in the region. This paper advances scholarship in this very critical area by projecting human rights as holding the …
