The Inky Story Of The Dinky Oak Gall, Ken Sulak Jan 2014

The Inky Story Of The Dinky Oak Gall, Ken Sulak

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Maybe you have noticed these little spheres before – but did not give them much thought. Or maybe, you puzzled: What are these wooden pearls? How did they get there? Well, a tiny wasp, called the pea galler wasp or gallfly, Belonocnema treatae, is the culprit. The diminutive female gallfly (one of nearly a thousand species in the gall wasp family Cynipidae), about the size of a fire ant, lays eggs on a freshly budded live oak leaf in spring. When the larva hatches, it produces a chemical that induces the oak to enclose it in a protective and …

Tissue-Specific Molecular Immune Response To Lipopolysaccharide Challenge In Emaciated Anadromous Arctic Charr, Mathilakath Vijayan, Anju Philip, Even Jørgensen, Alec Maule

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Anadromous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) undergo voluntary winter fasting for months in the Arctic. We tested the hypothesis that extended fasting will compromise the ability of this species to evoke an immune response. Charr were either fed or fasted for 85 days and challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and the molecular immune response in the liver and spleen assessed at 8 and 96 h post-injection. LPS increased IL-1β, IL-8, and serum amyloid protein A (SAA) mRNA levels in both groups, but the liver IL- 1β and IL-8, and spleen IL-8 responses were reduced in the fasted group. Fasting upregulated SOCS-1 and …

Keep Wrestling, Steven Kirchner Jan 2014

Keep Wrestling, Steven Kirchner

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

Wrestling has been on the chopping block at all levels for many years. Wrestling deserves to stay a core sport at all levels because there is no professional league for the sport, wrestling teaches life lessons, youth sports are necessary to the development of an athlete, and officials have made significant changes to help “modernize” the sport.

Methods: Visual estimations of tray waste were collected across four school districts. Averages of fruit …

Regulating Toxics: Sex And Gender In Canada's Chemicals Management Plan, Sarah Lewis, Dayna Nadine Scott Jan 2014

Regulating Toxics: Sex And Gender In Canada's Chemicals Management Plan, Sarah Lewis, Dayna Nadine Scott

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

Chemical substances are found everywhere in our environment. Whether it be at home, outdoors, or in the workplace, we are continuously coming into contact with various chemicals through our air, water, food, cosmetics, clothes, personal care products and everyday household items (Cooper, Vanderlinden, and Ursitti 2011; Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment 2008). As our detection methods improve, we are increasingly forced to confront the evidence of these exposures: biomonitoring studies now show that nearly everyone has measurable amounts of almost all known toxic chemicals stored somewhere in their bodies (CDC 2013; Environmental Defence 2009; Statistics Canada 2012). At …

Fire Effects On Seedling Establishment Success Across Treeline: Implications For Future Tree Migration And Flammability In A Changing Climate, F. S. Chapin Iii, Teresa N. Hollingsworth, Rebecca E. Hewitt Jan 2014

Fire Effects On Seedling Establishment Success Across Treeline: Implications For Future Tree Migration And Flammability In A Changing Climate, F. S. Chapin Iii, Teresa N. Hollingsworth, Rebecca E. Hewitt

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

Understanding the complex mechanisms controlling treeline advance or retreat in the arctic and subarctic has important implications for projecting ecosystem response to changes in climate. Changes in landcover due to a treeline biome shift would alter climate feedbacks (carbon storage and energy exchange), ecosystem services such as wildlife and berry habitat, and landscape flammability. Wildfire frequency and extent has increased in the last half-century in the boreal forest and tundra in response to warmer weather and lower precipitation. Invasion of tundra by trees may be facilitated by wildfire disturbance, which exposes new seedbeds, increases nutrient availability immediately post-fire, and creates …

The Role Of The B-Type Phospholipases In S. Cerevisiae: Function, Regulation, And Physiological Relevance In Lipid Homeostasis, Beth A Surlow Jan 2014

The Role Of The B-Type Phospholipases In S. Cerevisiae: Function, Regulation, And Physiological Relevance In Lipid Homeostasis, Beth A Surlow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Membrane phospholipid synthesis and turnover is a continual process during normal cell growth. The turnover of the glycerophospholipids by B-type phospholipases (PLBs) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae results in the formation glycerophosphodiesters through a deacylation reaction. Here, I address several aspects of the glycerophospholipid deacylation, transport, and reutilization pathway in S. cerevisiae. First, I show the RAS GTPase-activating proteins, Ira1 and Ira2, are required for utilization of the glycerophosphodiester - glycerophosphoinositol (GroPIns) - as a phosphate source. Second, I demonstrate loss of the cell surface associated PLBs, Plb1-3, and/or utilization of GroPIns causes actin cytoskeleton defects and an increased cell size. For …

Drowning In Disclosure: The Overburdening Of The Securities & Exchange Commission, Celia R. Taylor Jan 2014

Drowning In Disclosure: The Overburdening Of The Securities & Exchange Commission, Celia R. Taylor

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The belief that mandatory disclosure requirements enhance the efficiency of the United States capital markets and protect investors therein is a touchstone of federal securities regulation. During the 1932 presidential campaign, Franklin Delano Roosevelt promised to enact federal legislation to protect investors by mandating disclosure, drawing on the views of Louis Brandeis who famously stated, "publicity is justly commended as a remedy for social and industrial diseases. Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants; electric light the most efficient policeman." The fruit of those promises was the Securities Act of 1933, which requires companies issuing public securities to …

Controlled De-Cross-Linking And Disentanglement Of Feather Keratin For Fiber Preparation Via A Novel Process, Helan Xu, Yiqi Yang Jan 2014

Controlled De-Cross-Linking And Disentanglement Of Feather Keratin For Fiber Preparation Via A Novel Process, Helan Xu, Yiqi Yang

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Pure protein fibers were fabricated from chicken feathers via a potentially green process. In the last several decades, efforts have been made to produce keratin-based industrial products, especially fibers. However, the methods of producing keratin fibers directly from chicken feathers could not be repeated. In this research, protein fibers from chicken feathers were developed using chemicals that could be either derived from renewable resources or facilely recycled. Backbones of keratin were preserved after cleavage of disulfide bonds using cysteine. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was applied to dissolve keratin for spinning. Increasing SDS concentration intensified the ordered conformation of keratin, first …

Bioeconomic Factors Of Beef Heifer Maturity To Consider When Establishing Criteria To Optimally Select And/Or Retain Herd Replacements, M. C. Stockton, R. K. Wilson, D. M. Feuz, L. A. Stalker, R. N. Funston

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Understanding the biology of heifer maturity and its relationship to calving difficulty and subsequent breeding success is a vital step in building a bioeconomic model to identify optimal production and profitability. A limited dependent variable probit model is used to quantify the responses among heifer maturities, measured by a maturity index (MI), on dystocia and second pregnancy. The MI account for heifer age, birth BW, prebreeding BW, nutrition level, and dam size and age and is found to be inversely related to dystocia occurrence. On average there is a 2.2% increase in the probability of dystocia with every 1 point …
