An Exploration Of The Role Of Food Tourism In Sustaining Cultural Authenticity In Ireland, Lisa O'Riordan, Dr. Aisling Ward
An Exploration Of The Role Of Food Tourism In Sustaining Cultural Authenticity In Ireland, Lisa O'Riordan, Dr. Aisling Ward
Irish Business Journal
Authenticity is often a motivating factor for tourists. In many situations what occurs, however, is staged authenticity. Food is one of the few entities left that indicates true cultural authenticity. Food can bridge the gap between tourists and their understanding of and involvement in a place. Native cultures that are struggling to preserve their heritage and ways of life from globalising forces can use food as a defensive mechanism. This paper is part of a wider postgraduate study on food tourism and culture so will focus on the research completed to date, mainly the literature reviewed as well as initial …

What Predicts Drive For Muscularity In Collegiate Athletes V. Non-Athletes?, Mary Pritchard, Alli Nielsen
Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the past decade, research has begun to focus not only on dieting and exercise to lose weight, but dieting and exercise to gain muscle mass (drive for muscularity; DFM). While research has established that men tend to exhibit greater levels of DFM than women, little research has examined the influence of athletic status on drive for muscularity in male and female college students. This present study surveyed 290 student participants (30 female athletes, 38 male athletes, 139 female non-athletes, 82 male nonathletes and asked them about their DFM, as well as factors known to relate to DFM. As expected, …

The need for renewable sources of energy has become critical as fossil fuel resources, which include oil, coal, and natural gas, are known to contribute to climate change and will eventually be depleted. Biofuels that originate from the fat of plants, animals, microalgae, and bacteria are an attractive alternative. Microalgae, in particular, are strong candidates for biofuel production since they have a high growth rate and lipid content (up to 50 in some species). The goal of this research was to optimize 3N-BBM+V recipe (Bold Basal Medium with 3-fold Nitrogen and Vitamins) in an effort of reducing the amount of …

The body's ability to dissipate heat depends on environmental conditions of temperature, humidity, and air movement. An athlete's conditioning and acclimation to heat greatly improves performance in hot conditions. However, even then athletes can experience heat related problems such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the "Dragon Heat Polar Seat" in preventing hyperthermia in athletes competing in hot, humid climates. Methods: Ten healthy active participants (5 males 5 females) were required to complete three sessions that consisted of a VO2max test, a treatment run and …

Applied Theater: Giving Voice To Low-Income Teenage Immigrants Through Theater, Nadia S. Garzon
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
In the United States, immigration is feared, criticized, and highly misunderstood. The current immigration debate relies on, and reinforces, anti-immigrant myths. This rhetoric negatively impacts the lives of immigrants, especially that of the 11.7 million undocumented immigrants who currently live in the United States. The first chapter of this paper talks about some of the myths associated with immigration, the situation of many immigrants, and some of the root causes of immigration, including the role of the United States. The second chapter describes Augusto Boal’s life and his Theater of the Oppressed. The third chapter describes the process, challenges, and …

Methods: Morris, Y, and the elevated plus mazes were used. Western blot, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used to study the levels of AD biomarkers.
Results: Cognitive impairment was observed in mice exposed as infants but not as adults. Overexpression of AD-related genes (amyloid beta …
Multifaceted Nutritional Intervention In Hemodialysis Patients, Zulfitri Azuan Mat Daud
Multifaceted Nutritional Intervention In Hemodialysis Patients, Zulfitri Azuan Mat Daud
Wayne State University Dissertations
Mortality rate in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (HD) in the United States remain unacceptably high despite improvement in dialysis technology. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) account for more than 50% of the premature death in this population. Evidences indicate that the accelerated CVD are attributed to by malnutrition, inflammation, dyslipidemia and oxidative stress. Dietary intervention using nutrients with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential lipid altering properties to correct the aforementioned problems remain inconclusive. Furthermore, such nutritional intervention trial is often hampered by poor compliance related to medical and socioeconomic barriers. Therefore, a series of randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel trials were undertaken to document …
Perceived Parenting Style And Self-Efficacy For Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among University Students Living On Campus, Shannon Summers
Perceived Parenting Style And Self-Efficacy For Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among University Students Living On Campus, Shannon Summers
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Research suggests that parenting style has long-term implications on the emotional and behavioral development of children. The current study investigated the influence of parenting style on dietary behaviors beyond adolescence by examining the relationships between perceived parenting style, self-efficacy for fruit and vegetable consumption, and weight status among 227 college students living in campus residences. Spearman's rank-order correlations, linear regression, and independent sample t-test statistical analyses were used to test the hypothesis. Results demonstrated that authoritative parenting was positively correlated with self-efficacy for fruit and vegetable consumption (p < .01) and authoritarian parenting was positively correlated with body mass index (p = .04). Post-hoc analysis also indicated that family meal frequency was positively associated with authoritative parenting (p <.01) and negatively associated with BMI (p <.01). These results suggest that parenting style continues to influence nutrition and weight status into adulthood, even when children are no longer living at home. Future studies should continue to explore how remembered parenting style influences nutrition in adulthood, with incorporation of a quantitative measure of dietary intake. Additionally, longitudinal research is needed to provide insight into the relationship between parenting style and weight status throughout the lifespan.
Uracil Accumulation Response To Folate Depletion Is A Function Of Dna Repair Imbalance That May Be A Mechanism Of Aging, Hongzhi Ma
Wayne State University Dissertations
Folate is an essential nutrient for human. They carry and transfer one carbon units. They has important biological functions during many reactions, like DNA synthesis, RNA synthesis, DNA methylation, DNA repair, cell division and growth. Through biochemical techniques to determine the gene expression, enzyme activity, uracil level in DNA, and through microbiological assay to determine the folate level, elucidates mechanism of uracil accumulation response to folate depletion. The findings present folate deficiency status affects the uracil DNA glycosylase activity, and uracil initiated DNA base excising repair. DNA repair ability decide whether there is uracil accumulation under the folate depletion condition …
Understanding The Role Of Nutritional Stress In The Adult And Developing Zebra Finch, Jessica Bayley Thompson
Understanding The Role Of Nutritional Stress In The Adult And Developing Zebra Finch, Jessica Bayley Thompson
Wayne State University Dissertations
Songbirds are particularly susceptible to stress during the sensitive period for song learning. Thus the developmental stress hypothesis (DSH) proposes that adult song reflects a male's early life environment during this period. Nutritional stress (NS) has been shown to cause deficits in song learning and adult song output that are salient to females. Female song birds consistently prefer control males over those raised under NS, yet the effects NS on females are still unclear. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) has been implicated in this process. However, evidence directly linking HPA functioning to the deficits due to NS have inconsistently shown elevations …

Microbial safety of fresh fruits and vegetables is an increasing concern with any possible recall or outbreaks negatively affecting the entire industry. The interest in the development of active packaging has recently been steadily increasing due to significant concerns about environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable packaging materials and consumer demand for high quality food products. Newly developed packaging materials and methods often have additional functional properties, such as antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
In our study, the chitosan-gallic acid edible films and chitosan-essential oil coatings with antimicrobial activity, as well as active packaging with chlorine dioxide sachet were developed. The results …
Effects Of Altering The Peroxisomal Redox State In Models Of Degenerative Disease, Courtney Rose Giordano
Effects Of Altering The Peroxisomal Redox State In Models Of Degenerative Disease, Courtney Rose Giordano
Wayne State University Dissertations
Peroxisomes are important regulators of cellular redox balance and function as a signaling platform to regulate anti-aging metabolic and communication networks. In addition the organelle has emerged as a major player in maintaining cellular ROS at an optimal level. At such levels, these ROS are involved in initiation of signaling cascades and that produce an array of anti-aging and disease processes. However, as cells age over time, ROS amass within the peroxisome and elsewhere in the cell. This leads to an imbalance in oxidative homeostasis and results in compromised signaling networks. The goal of this dissertation was to treat disease …
Metabolic Syndrome In Obese African American Adolescents, Yulyu Yeh
Metabolic Syndrome In Obese African American Adolescents, Yulyu Yeh
Wayne State University Dissertations
Limited research regarding metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been conducted in obese African American adolescents (OAAA) using the International Diabetes Federation IDF criteria. MetS is a constellation of risk factors that increase the risk for chronic diseases and is defined as presence of any 3 or more of the 5 criteria: fasting glucose 100mg/dl, waist circumference 90th percentile, triglycerides 150 mg/dl, blood pressure (BP) 130/85 mmHg and HDL < 40mg/dl. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of MetS in OAAA by using the IDF criteria and the relationship with diet, fast food consumption, nutrition knowledge, home food environment (HFE), and serum calcium, leptin, 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D (1, 25 D3) levels. One hundred and fifty one OAAA (mean age: 14.3 ± 1.4 years, 65.6% girls, mean BMI: 37.4±7.2 kg/m2) in a metropolitan area took part in this study. Anthropometric data and fasting blood samples were collected. Participants completed a set of questionnaires regarding diet, fast food consumption, and nutrition knowledge. HFE was completed by the care givers. The MetS rate for OAAA was 61.6% and boys had higher MetS than girls (73.1%, 55.6% respectively). OAAA without MetS had higher serum calcium and 1,25 D3 level but no significant difference were found in food consumption, nutrition knowledge, and HFE. Total cholesterol /HDL ratio and Insulin resistance increased the odds of MetS by 55% and 10% and 1,25 D3 decrease the odds of MetS by 2%. Even though high fast food consumption, lack of nutrition knowledge and poor food environment were negatively associated with obesity, they didn't contribute to MetS. Increase serum vitamin D and calcium level might be beneficial to reduce MetS in OAAA population.

Using Mosses To Assess Conditions In Northern White Cedar Swamps, Vaula L. M. Lukkarinen
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Northern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.) (NWC) swamps are valuable both commercially and ecologically. Unfortunately, many NWC swamps are degraded and information about them is not abundant. Especially there have been no definitive studies about mosses in northern white cedar swamps and how they react to disturbances. Mosses are sensitive to changes in their environment and thus they could be used to assess ecosystem conditions of NWC swamps.
The objective of this study was to determine if mosses could be used to asses conditions in NWC swamps and if there are differences between moss communities in disturbed and …

Focus on Creative Inquiry
The objective was to investigate taste preference for Dr Pepper TEN and Diet Dr Pepper and consumers' willingness to purchase Dr Pepper TEN after viewing the product's commercial. A taste preference test was conducted using 168 students at Clemson University during fall 2013. An online survey developed using Qualtrics consisted of items for demographics, taste preference and consumer behavior after viewing a Dr Pepper TEN commercial. One and two sample proportion Z tests were performed and chi-squared tests were used for testing associations. The majority (overall, males and females) preferred the taste of Dr Pepper TEN (p-value<0.001). There was no evidence of a difference in the proportion of males and females who preferred the taste of Dr Pepper TEN (p-value=0.2546). There was no evidence of an association between gender and likelihood of purchasing Dr Pepper TEN after seeing the commercial (p-value<0.25). The results give doubt to the \just for women\" claim of the advertisements."

Six species of filariae infect humans in sub-Saharan Africa. We hypothesise that these nematodes are able to polyparasitise human hosts by having successfully, through competitive exclusion, adapted to distinct niches. Despite inhabiting the same host, adult stages reside in different tissue sites. Microfilariae of some species exhibit temporal separation by reaching peak levels in the blood at specific times of day. Spatial and temporal distributions in microfilaria location are exploited by the vector feeding-behaviour whereas adult survival is enhanced by occupying exclusive ‘ecological’ niches of the body. We present specific examples to demonstrate this concept, which is not only important …

Teaching Antenatal Counseling Skills To Neonatal Providers, Theophil A. Stokes, Katie L. Watson, Renee D. Boss
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Counseling a family confronted with the birth of a periviable neonate is one of the most difficult tasks that a neonatologist must perform. The neonatologist's goal is to facilitate an informed, collaborative decision about whether life-sustaining therapies are in the best interest of this baby. Neonatologists are trained to provide families with a detailed account of the morbidity and mortality data they believe are necessary to facilitate a truly informed decision. Yet these complicated and intensely emotional conversations require advanced communication and counseling skills that our current fellowship-training strategies are not adequately providing. We review educational models for training neonatology …
