Gastrointestinal Problems In Children With Autism, Developmental Delays Or Typical Development, Virginia Chaidez, Robin L. Hansen, Irva Hertz-Picciotto Jan 2014

Gastrointestinal Problems In Children With Autism, Developmental Delays Or Typical Development, Virginia Chaidez, Robin L. Hansen, Irva Hertz-Picciotto

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Abstract To compare gastrointestinal (GI) problems among children with: (1) autism spectrum disorder (ASD), (2) developmental delay (DD) and (3) typical development (TD), GI symptom frequencies were obtained for 960 children from the CHildhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment (CHARGE) study. We also examined scores on five Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) subscales comparing ASD children with high versus low frequency GI symptoms. Compared to TD children, those with ASD [aOR 7.92 (4.89–12.85)] and DD [aOR 4.55 (2.51–8.24)] were more likely to have at least one frequent GI symptom. Restricting to ASD children, those with frequent abdominal pain, gaseousness, diarrhea, …

Ellagic Acid Inhibits Adipocyte Differentiation Through Coactivator-Associated Arginine Methyltransferase 1-Mediated Chromatin Modification, Inhae Kang, Meshail Okla, Soonkyu Chung Jan 2014

Ellagic Acid Inhibits Adipocyte Differentiation Through Coactivator-Associated Arginine Methyltransferase 1-Mediated Chromatin Modification, Inhae Kang, Meshail Okla, Soonkyu Chung

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Chromatin remodeling is a key mechanism in adipocyte differentiation. However, it is unknown whether dietary polyphenols are epigenetic effectors for adiposity control. Ellagic acid (EA) is a naturally occurring polyphenol in numerous fruits and vegetables. Recently, EA-containing foods have been reported to reduce adiposity. In the present study, we sought to determine whether EA inhibits adipogenesis by modifying chromatin remodeling in human adipogenic stem cells (hASCs). qPCR microarray of chromatin modification enzymes revealed that 10 μmol/L of EA significantly inhibits histone deacetylase (HDAC)9 downregulation. In addition, EA was associated with up-regulation of HDAC activity and a marked reduction of histone …

Sin Taxes And Sindustry: Revenue, Paternalism, And Political Interest, Adam J. Hoffer, William F. Shughart Ii, Michael D. Thomas

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Revenue shortfalls associated with the Great Recession and the slow recovery that followed have placed the budgets of many U.S. state and local governments under heavy stress. In the past several years, lingering economic troubles have eroded governmental tax bases while voters have remained strongly resistant to proposals for cutting public spending or raising taxes on income, property, or other broad bases. This has left many states searching for new revenue sources. Particularly attractive targets for "revenue enhancement" are goods that policymakes deem to be "sinful" or misguided because they are bad for the user or generate negative externalities or …

The Hyperregulatory State: Women, Race, Poverty And Support, Wendy A. Bach Jan 2014

The Hyperregulatory State: Women, Race, Poverty And Support, Wendy A. Bach

Scholarly Works

Vulnerability and dependency theory offers a rich and promising vision for those who seek to conceptualize and build a more responsive state. In theorizing a road to a supportive state, however, what would it mean to take up the challenge of intersectionality? What would it mean to center the analysis around key aspects of the relationship between legal institutions and the poor, disproportionately women and families of color who have no choice but to avail themselves of what remains of a shredded social safety net? The Hyperregulatory State argues that, for women who have no choice but to avail themselves …

Principles Of Test Development In Papua New Guinea, Sarah Flint, Kristen Pammer Jan 2014

Principles Of Test Development In Papua New Guinea, Sarah Flint, Kristen Pammer

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

With over 800 languages and more than 1000 cultural groups, Papua New Guinea (PNG) provides a challenging environment in which to develop culturally appropriate psychometric tests. Consequently, few tests have been specifically developed for parallel-emic research in PNG. This paper proposes a framework in which to develop psychometric tests within PNG. Linguistic, cultural and social factors are all addressed and strategies for working within these cultural boundaries are posited. Models for translation and validation are assessed in light of the unique challenges presented by the linguistic diversity of PNG. An alternative methodology of translation more appropriate for PNG is also …

Reformers, Batting Averages, And Malpractice: The Case For Caution In Value-Added Use, Dan Gleason Jan 2014

Reformers, Batting Averages, And Malpractice: The Case For Caution In Value-Added Use, Dan Gleason

Faculty Publications & Research

The essay considers two analogies that help to reveal the limitations of value-added modeling: the first, a comparison with batting averages, shows that the model’s reliability is quite limited even though year-to-year correlation figures may seem impressive; the second, a comparison between medical malpractice and so-called educational malpractice, suggests that strict accountability measures within education are out of line with legal precedent.

2 Growing Risk for Alzheimer’s Alzheimer’s disease is more than just forgetfulness. It robs people of their abilities to think, remember, reason and control their behavior. A combination of genetic and environmental factors contributes to the disease’s development, but the process may begin decades before symptoms appear. Researchers are working to discover what those factors might be and how people might decrease their risk of developing the disease.

8 Measuring Quality in Baby Steps Each day thousands of children in Utah spend part of their day in the care of someone other than their parents. The quality of daycare affects …

Background: Elevated plasma homocysteine is a risk factor for Alzheimer disease, but the relevance of homocysteine lowering to slow the rate of cognitive aging is uncertain. Objective: The aim was to assess the effects of treatment with B vitamins compared with placebo, when administered for several years, on composite domains of cognitive function, global cognitive function, and cognitive aging. Design: A meta-analysis was conducted by using data combined from 11 large trials in 22,000 participants. Domain-based z scores (for memory, speed, and executive function and a domain-composite score for global cognitive function) were available before and after treatment (mean duration: …

Kinder Camp Provides Reading Ramp : A Study To Examine The Effects Of Summer Learning Loss On Beginning Readers, Amy D. Huskin

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to determine if twenty days of reading intervention would have an impact on preventing summer learning loss for students entering first grade. Research indicates that while all students show some losses each summer, students with limited resources, commonly referred to as economically disadvantaged, suffer greater losses. This study showed evidence of reducing summer learning loss for students in the participant group at an urban school district in central Virginia. The data in this study supports the body of literature that indicates that summer quality programming is important and can have an impact on reducing summer learning …

Associations Between Childhood Body Size, Composition, Blood Pressure And Adult Cardiac Structure: The Fels Longitudinal Study, Roy T. Sabo, Miao-Shan Yen, Stephen Daniels, Shumei S. Sun

Biostatistics Publications

Objectives

To determine whether childhood body size, composition and blood pressure are associated with adult cardiac structure by estimating childhood “age of divergence.”

Methods

385 female and 312 male participants in the Fels Longitudinal Study had echocardiographic measurements of left ventricular mass, relative wall thickness, and interventricular septal thickness. Also available were anthropometric measurements of body mass index, waist circumference, percentage body fat, fat free mass, total body fat, and systolic and diastolic blood pressures, taken in both childhood and adulthood. The age of divergence is estimated as the lowest age at which childhood measurements are significantly different between patients …
