Growth Of Bella Bluegrass Compared To A Standard Kbg Blend And Tall Fescue, Paul Johnson, Xin Dai, Roberrto Gurel Jan 2014

Growth Of Bella Bluegrass Compared To A Standard Kbg Blend And Tall Fescue, Paul Johnson, Xin Dai, Roberrto Gurel

CWEL Publications

A goal of low-input turfgrass is to reduce mowing, thereby reducing labor, fuel, and equipment expenses. A way to meet this goal is to develop grasses that grow slower. 'Bella' Kentucky bluegrass was released by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a slow-growing variety of bluegrass. This experiment documents slightly to significantly slower growth of 'Bella' compared to a traditional Kentucky bluegrass sod blend and tall fescue grown in the Intermountain West region of North America. Consumers frequently seek grasses that need less mowing and fertilizer (Busey and Parker, 1992). Although turfgrasses recover from traffic by growing, many uses don't need …

Ayurvedic Psychology: Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Science, Daniel Rhoda

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Ayurveda is a holistic medical system based on ancient Indian texts that utilizes natural treatments, botanical medicines, and lifestyle and dietary practices to promote healing of the body, mind, senses, and spirit. Interest in Ayurveda has grown in the United States over the last two decades, as consumers, therapists, scientists, and health regulators have recognized its holistic and preventative benefits. According to Ayurveda, every human being is composed of a unique proportion of these elemental energies, a foundational theory in Ayurveda known as tridosha. The three doshas (vata, pitta, kapha) represent three psychobiological constitutional types that govern …

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Background—For the premature infant, extrauterine life is a pathological condition which greatly amplifies the challenges to the brain in establishing functional oromotor behaviors. The extent to which suck can be entrained using a synthetically patterned orocutaneous input to promote its development in preterm infants who manifest chronic lung disease is unknown.

Objective—To evaluate the effects of a frequency-modulated orocutaneous pulse train delivered through a pneumatically-charged pacifier capable of enhancing non-nutritive suck (NNS) activity in tube-fed premature infants.

Methods—A randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of pneumatic orocutaneous stimulation 3x/day on NNS development and length of stay (LOS) in the NICU …

Evaluation Of Constitutive Iron Reductase (Atfro2) Expression On Mineral Accumulation And Distribution In Soybean (Glycine Max. L), Marta W. Vasconcelos, Thomas E. Clemente, Michael A. Grusak Jan 2014

Evaluation Of Constitutive Iron Reductase (Atfro2) Expression On Mineral Accumulation And Distribution In Soybean (Glycine Max. L), Marta W. Vasconcelos, Thomas E. Clemente, Michael A. Grusak

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Iron is an important micronutrient in human and plant nutrition. Adequate iron nutrition during crop production is central for assuring appropriate iron concentrations in the harvestable organs, for human food or animal feed. The whole-plant movement of iron involves several processes, including the reduction of ferric to ferrous iron at several locations throughout the plant, prior to transmembrane trafficking of ferrous iron. In this study, soybean plants that constitutively expressed the AtFRO2 iron reductase gene were analyzed for leaf iron reductase activity, as well as the effect of this transgene's expression on root, leaf, pod wall, and seed mineral concentrations. …

Spontaneous/Radical Remission Of Cancer: Transpersonal Results From A Grounded Theory Study, Kelly A. Turner Jan 2014

Spontaneous/Radical Remission Of Cancer: Transpersonal Results From A Grounded Theory Study, Kelly A. Turner

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This grounded theory study aimed to collect hypotheses for spontaneous or radical remission (RR) of cancer, which is a remission that occurs without medical treatment, or with medical treatment considered inadequate to produce the remission. Interviews were conducted with 20 RR survivors and 50 non-conventional healers from 11 countries. Results showed that three underlying beliefs emerged: 1. Cancer thrives under certain conditions; 2. Illness represents blockage; and 3. A body-mind-spirit interaction exists. Six factors believed to be possible causes of RR also emerged: 1. Diet change; 2. Deepening spirituality; 3. Increasing happiness; 4. Releasing suppressed emotions; 5. Taking supplements; and …

Fermentable Carbohydrate Substrates Generated From Cereal And Pseudocereal Insoluble Dietary Fibers And Their In Vitro Fecal Fermentation, Lisa Marcela Lamothe Jan 2014

Fermentable Carbohydrate Substrates Generated From Cereal And Pseudocereal Insoluble Dietary Fibers And Their In Vitro Fecal Fermentation, Lisa Marcela Lamothe

Open Access Dissertations

Dietary fiber has gained an increasing attention in recent years due to the myriad of health benefits attributed to it. The majority of these arise from their fermentative properties and their effects on gut microbiota. Cereals and pseudocereals are important sources of insoluble dietary fibers that are recalcitrant to solubilization by non-chemical methods and poorly fermented. This warranted an effort to make these fibers more susceptible to microbial degradation and a resulting improved fermentability. Insoluble dietary fibers from four alternative grains, sorghum and pearl millet of African origin, and quinoa and amaranth of Andean origin, were subjected to a combination …

Characterization Of Molecular Functions Of Polyamines In Fruit Development And Ripening In Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum), Raheel Anwar Jan 2014

Characterization Of Molecular Functions Of Polyamines In Fruit Development And Ripening In Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum), Raheel Anwar

Open Access Dissertations

Putrescine (PUT), spermidine (SPD) and spermine (SPM) are three major polyamines (PAs) present in all living organisms. These biogenic amines have been implicated in diverse plant growth and development processes, including seed germination, tissue lignification, organogenesis, flowering, pollination, embryogenesis, fruit development, ripening, abscission, senescence, and stress responses. To elucidate molecular roles of PAs in fruit development and ripening, I characterized transgenic tomato plants ectopically expressing yeast spermidine synthase (ySpdSyn) or S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (ySAMdc) under constitutive CaMV 35S and/or fruit-specific SlE8 promoters. The ySpdSyn-expression enhanced PUT, SPD and SPM level in floral buds and fertilized developing ovaries by 2- to 3-fold …

Disability, Laura L. Ellingson, Margaret M. Quinlan Jan 2014

Disability, Laura L. Ellingson, Margaret M. Quinlan

Gender and Sexuality Studies

People with disabilities (PWD) are the fastest growing minority social group in the world. Moreover, this group is one in which many, if not all individuals, will eventually join due to accidents, injuries, illnesses, wear and tear on aging bodies, and genetic factors. Disabilities can be physical, cognitive, social, and/or emotional. The disability community overlaps with people of all races, ethnicities, age groups, genders, sexual orientations/ expressions, and socioeconomic statuses, although PWD are overrepresented among people who are economically disadvantaged and under-served in health care, environmental safety, nutrition, and other basic needs. While the proportion of people with disabilities increases …

The Education Lorenz Curve: Exploring Education And Social Mobility In A Lorenz Curve Framework, Nichole D. Alexander Jan 2014

The Education Lorenz Curve: Exploring Education And Social Mobility In A Lorenz Curve Framework, Nichole D. Alexander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within any society the level of social mobility, the distribution of income, and equality of opportunity work together to determine the ease with which a child born into poverty can make it to the middle class during his or her lifetime. Education plays a large part, if not the largest part, in the analysis of these areas within a given society. Therefore, an equal distribution of education among those born into all income levels is one key ingredient to ensuring that all children who are born into poverty get the same chance of succeeding in the workforce as their more …

Practical Project, Phil Nicholl Jan 2014

Practical Project, Phil Nicholl

Assessment & Feedback Cases

Students work in groups in the microbiology lab carrying out structured tasks on a weekly basis. Completion of the tasks ultimately allows them to complete a project over several weeks. The tasks are based on the previously used lab manual. Each group is given a slightly different project to complete (eg different pathogens) however the tasks are similar, with minor modifications to suit the project. Students are given templates for SOPs and reports, and they learn to generate their own SOPs during the project. They decide as a group what tasks are required, and elect a supervisor to delegate tasks. …

Digital Media, Catherine Barry-Ryan

Assessment & Feedback Cases

Students produce a short (3 to 4 minute) group (4/group) video production, detailing a biochemistry concept. The group decides the choice of content during the initial meetings and storyboarding of the idea(s). The content must address, in some way, a biochemical concept related to TFBC2001. This concept could be the basis of an important biochemical experiment, a creative explanation of a biochemical hypothesis, addressing a biochemical misconception, or exploring a biochemical model. The video can contain any form of multimedia (video, sound, audio, animation etc.) but it must be visual, engaging and creative.

Unpermitted Urban Agriculture: Transgressive Actions, Changing Norms, And The Local Food Movement, Sarah Schindler Jan 2014

Unpermitted Urban Agriculture: Transgressive Actions, Changing Norms, And The Local Food Movement, Sarah Schindler

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Roberta keeps four chickens in her backyard. Bob snuck onto the vacant lot next door, which the bank foreclosed upon and now owns, and planted a vegetable garden. Vien operates an occasional underground restaurant from his friends' microbrewery after beer-making operations cease for the day. The common thread tying these actions together is that they are unauthorized; they are being undertaken in violation of existing laws and often norms. In this Article, I explore ideas surrounding the overlap between food policy and land use law, specifically the transgressive actions that people living in urban and suburban communities are undertaking to …

Influence Of Diet And Obesity On Copd Development And Outcomes, Corrine K. Hanson, Erica P. Rutten, Emiel F.M. Wouters, Stephen I. Rennard

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

The global increase in the prevalence and incidence of obesity has called serious attention to this issue as a major public health concern. Obesity is associated with many chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and recently the role of overweight and obesity in lung disease has received new interest. Independently of obesity, diet also plays a role as a risk factor for many chronic diseases, and evidence is accumulating to support a role for diet in the prevention and management of several lung diseases. Chronic obstructive lung disease is the third-leading cause of death globally, and both obesity and …
