Diet: Another Piece Of The Crime Puzzle?, Jerrod Brown, Jeremiah Schimp, Leanne Skehan, Amanda Fenrich, Janina Cich

Nutritional Neurocriminology Today

An expanding body of research suggests that diet and nutrition may play an influential yet underrecognized role in problematic and criminal behaviors. This article synthesizes research linking excessive consumption of sugar and ultra-processed foods to adverse neurobehavioral outcomes, impaired impulse control, aggression, mood dysregulation, and sleep problems. Integrating research suggests that metabolic disruption, neuroinflammation, and gut–brain axis dysfunction may influence cognitive and emotional regulation. While criminal behavior is complex and multifactorial, this article emphasizes nutrition as a modifiable factor to inform forensic mental health practice, correctional policy, and rehabilitative strategies.

The Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Science

As climate change intensifies, heat stress poses a significant challenge to sustainable poultry production, threatening global food security and animal welfare. Broiler chickens, genetically selected for rapid growth and efficient feed conversion, are particularly susceptible to heat stress, which disrupts their physiological balance and impairs intestinal health. Although the role of gut microbiota in food metabolism and immune function is well-established, the impact of heat stress on microbial dynamics in broilers remains inadequately understood. This review synthesizes bibliometric and literature analyses to explore the current state of research on heat stress and gut microbiota in poultry. Data were systematically gathered …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The project is a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) clinical practice guideline (CPG) on the need for a psychiatric facility to develop a CPG on self-care to give to patients upon discharge. The practice problem was a healthcare facility did not have guidelines to educate patients on self-care upon discharge. Addressing the problem within nursing practice can promote self-care practices and improve overall health outcomes for patients with mental illnesses. The practice-focused question that guided this project was: will a CPG potentially increase self-care among discharged patients? The purpose of the study was to develop a CPG on self-care for …

Rare Infection With Precise Detection: Abiotrophia Defectiva Septic Arthritis Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Ahmed Al Mamari, Shouq Al Hudar, Maya Al Salti

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Abiotrophia defectiva, a nutritionally variant streptococcus, is an uncommon yet significant pathogen primarily associated with infective endocarditis and, more rarely, septic arthritis. We report a 23-year-old male patient who presented to a tertiary care centre in Rustaq, Oman, in 2024 with right knee pain and fever following an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Standard cultures remained negative, but enrichment broth and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry enabled prompt identification of A. defectiva. Subsequently, the patient was diagnosed with native knee septic arthritis due to A. defective. Following surgical debridement, the patient completed a 4-week course of targeted antibiotic therapy, …

Biostimulant Applications In Watermelon Production, Evan A. Christensen, Milena Oliveira, Youping Sun, Grant Cardon, Dan Drost

All Current Publications

Watermelon is a water-intensive vegetable crop that is sensitive to drought and requires adequate nutrient supply for good yield and fruit quality. It is an important vegetable crop grown on 142,000 acres in the United States and 586 acres throughout Utah. Utah experienced its driest year on record in 2020 during a five-year drought (2019 to 2023). This affected local ecosystems, including the Great Salt Lake, which experienced record-low water levels. The drought also negatively affected the agricultural sector, including watermelon growers. Higher-than-average fertilizer prices in recent years have also threatened watermelon production. Growing awareness of agriculture's water use and …

The Effects Of A Nurse-Led Peace Program On Perceived Peaceful End-Of-Life And Quality Of Life Among Head And Neck Cancer Patients Undergoing Concurrent Chemoradiation, Sirinya Pimvichai, Yaowarat Matchim, Tanadej Sinthusake, Kiratiya Wongkalasin

Journal of Health Research

Background: Evidence indicates that peaceful end-of-life care programs benefit terminally ill patients, with nurses playing a central role in program delivery. However, no structured end-of-life care programs currently exist for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), who often experience profound physical and psychological distress. A nurse-led Peaceful End-of-Life Care (PEACE) program was therefore developed. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the PEACE program on perceived peaceful end-of-life (PEOL) and quality of life (QoL) among HNC patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT).

Methods: A quasi-experimental, two-group time-series design was conducted with 64 HNC patients recruited from oncology wards at …

Disguised And Dangerous: A Case Of Cervicofacial Actinomycosis Presenting With Hemoptysis, Tharun Shyam, Shamanth M Reddy, Saumya Nanda, Yan Naing Tun, Rohan Pinto, Navjot Somal, Ravi Karan Patti

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic, suppurative bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces spp with an incidence of 0.3 cases per million people annually. The cervicofacial area is the most common site of infection and accounts for approximately 50 percent of all cases. Most cases of cervicofacial actinomycosis are odontogenic in origin.

Hemoptysis in the setting of actinomycosis commonly occurs from pulmonary involvement. Hemoptysis secondary to isolated cervicofacial actinomycosis has seldom been documented in literature. We hereby present a case of cervicofacial actinomycosis presenting with hemoptysis likely secondary to an oro-cervical fistula. We aim to highlight the challenges in diagnosis of this …

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic immune-mediated condition requiring long-term management. Traditional immunosuppressants, such as corticosteroids, thiopurines, and methotrexate, have been widely used but are associated with broad immunosuppressive effects and significant adverse events. The advent of biological therapies, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, integrin inhibitors, and interleukin (IL)-12/23 inhibitors, has revolutionized IBD treatment by offering targeted immune modulation. Biologics have demonstrated superior efficacy in achieving and maintaining remission compared to traditional immunosuppressants, particularly in moderate to severe IBD. They provide targeted immune suppression, reducing systemic side effects, but are associated with …

Towards Decolonization Of Evaluation Practices: A Critical Reflection Of Participatory Evaluation Methodologies In Less Developed Countries, Zabron Kengera Jan 2026

Towards Decolonization Of Evaluation Practices: A Critical Reflection Of Participatory Evaluation Methodologies In Less Developed Countries, Zabron Kengera

Tanzania Journal of Sociology

For many years evaluation practices in less developed countries have been dominated by scientific, top down, quantitative approaches and methodologies. As the result, many evaluation practices in less developed countries have been largely characterized by skewed power relations with poor adoption and utilization of evaluation findings. Several researchers, writers and development professionals agree that participatory evaluation was adopted in Africa and elsewhere in the world as a strategy to address several weaknesses observed in the conventional evaluation practices. Such practices include too much focus on projects and donor funding, lack of inclusion, poor consideration of local variations, lack of transparency, …

Rethinking Marine Resource Management And The Livelihoods Of Artisanal Fishers, Nassoro Rajab Kitunda

Tanzania Journal of Sociology

There are many initiatives, programs and projects based on fishing resource management and improvement of fishing communities. Indeed, all are trying to introduce new forms of fishing as way of improving the marine industry. Nonetheless, there are many things that are either missing or misrepresented in explaining marine resources, especially fishing industry management and subsequent artisanal fishermen’s livelihoods. Because such programs are incompatible and inapplicable, instead of conserving the ocean, they have implications for lives of artisanal fishers and their communities, as the activities displace them so as to access and use the ocean. The study was conducted through qualitative …
