A Conceptual Framework For Clutch-Size Evolution In Songbirds, Thomas E. Martin Feb 2014

A Conceptual Framework For Clutch-Size Evolution In Songbirds, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Causes of evolved differences in clutch size among songbird species remain debated. I propose a new conceptual framework that integrates aspects of traditional life-history theory while including novel elements to explain evolution of clutch size among songbirds. I review evidence that selection by nest predation on length of time that offspring develop in the nest creates a gradient in offspring characteristics at nest leaving (fledging), including flight mobility, spatial dispersion, and self-feeding rate. I postulate that this gradient has consequences for offspring mortality rates and parental energy expenditure per offspring. These consequences then determine how reproductive effort is partitioned among …

Copy Number Variation In Chickens: A Review And Future Prospects, Xiaofei Wang, Shannon Byers Feb 2014

Copy Number Variation In Chickens: A Review And Future Prospects, Xiaofei Wang, Shannon Byers

Biology Faculty Research

DNA sequence variations include nucleotide substitution, deletion, insertion, translocation and inversion. Deletion or insertion of a large DNA segment in the genome, referred to as copy number variation (CNV), has caught the attention of many researchers recently. It is believed that CNVs contribute significantly to genome variability, and thus contribute to phenotypic variability. In chickens, genome-wide surveys with array comparative genome hybridization (aCGH), SNP chip detection or whole genome sequencing have revealed a large number of CNVs. A large portion of chicken CNVs involves protein coding or regulatory sequences. A few CNVs have been demonstrated to be the determinant factors …

Altekruse, Christopher Lyu, Mona Saraiya, The Hpv Typing Of Cancer Workgroup

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is estimated to play an etiologic role in 40-50% of penile cancers worldwide. Estimates of HPV prevalence in U.S. penile cancer cases are limited.

METHODS: HPV DNA was evaluated in tumor tissue from 79 invasive penile cancer patients diagnosed in 1998-2005 within the catchment areas of seven U.S. cancer registries. HPV was genotyped using PCR-based Linear Array and INNO-LiPA assays and compared by demographic, clinical, and pathologic characteristics and survival. Histological classification was also obtained by independent pathology review.

RESULTS: HPV DNA was present in 50 of 79 (63%) of invasive penile cancer cases. Sixteen viral …

Variable Facial Plumage In Juvenile Cliff Swallows: A Potential Offspring Recognition Cue?, Allison E. Johnson, Steven Freedberg Feb 2014

Variable Facial Plumage In Juvenile Cliff Swallows: A Potential Offspring Recognition Cue?, Allison E. Johnson, Steven Freedberg

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Although the ability to recognize related offspring is essential in the evolution of social behavior, the cues that birds use to identify their own offspring are not fully understood. The Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) is a highly social species that nests in large colonies and exhibits a high incidence of both conspecific brood parasitism and extrapair fertilization, behaviors that can potentially lead to parents investing energy and resources in unrelated offspring, which reduces the parents’ genetic fitness. Because parents continue to feed offspring after they leave the nest, parents also risk investing in unrelated offspring by misidentifying their …

Investigating The Potential Of Plant-Derived Antimicrobials And Probiotic Bacteria For Controlling Listeria Monocytogenes, Abhinav Upadhyay Feb 2014

Investigating The Potential Of Plant-Derived Antimicrobials And Probiotic Bacteria For Controlling Listeria Monocytogenes, Abhinav Upadhyay

Doctoral Dissertations

Listeria monocytogenes is a major foodborne pathogen resulting in multiple foodborne outbreaks in United States. In this dissertation, the efficacy of six plant-derived antimicrobials (PDAs), namely trans-cinnamaldehyde, carvacrol, thymol, eugenol, β-resorcylic acid and caprylic acid, and five probiotic bacteria, namely Bifidobacterium bifidum (NRRL-B41410), Lactobacillus reuteri (B-14172), L. fermentum (B-1840), L. plantarum (B-4496), and Lactococcus lactis subspecies lactis (B-633) was investigated for controlling L. monocytogenes. Specifically, the efficacy of aforementioned PDAs in reducing L. monocytogenes biofilms on abiotic surfaces, and pathogen populations on popular high-risk foods such as frankfurter and cantaloupe was investigated. In addition, the efficacy of PDAs and …

Texas High Plains Initiative For Strategic And Innovative Irrigation Management And Conservation, Justin Weinheimer, Phillip Johnson, Donna Mitchell, Jeff Johnson, Rick Kellison Feb 2014

Texas High Plains Initiative For Strategic And Innovative Irrigation Management And Conservation, Justin Weinheimer, Phillip Johnson, Donna Mitchell, Jeff Johnson, Rick Kellison

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The strategic management of irrigation applications to improve water-use efficiency and meet economic objectives has been identified as a key factor in the conservation of water resources in the Texas High Plains region. Two field level demonstration projects have been ongoing in the Texas High Plains to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of irrigation water conservation methods. Since 2010, the North Plains Groundwater Conservation District has evaluated corn production using 12 acre-inches or less of applied irrigation water with a goal to produce 200 bushels per acre. In the South Plains, the Texas Alliance for Water Conservation (TAWC) has worked directly …
