Assessment Of Health Needs In Rural America: A Comparison Of Amish And Non-Amish Families, Kathy K. Trier Feb 2014

Assessment Of Health Needs In Rural America: A Comparison Of Amish And Non-Amish Families, Kathy K. Trier

Sociological Practice

This study examines a state-sponsored initiative to identify the primary health needsin rural areas so that the appropriateness of existing programs and services could bedetermined, and the development of new ones could be planned. Data were collectedthrough a survey of 200 families, 50 of whom were Amish. Relatively few differencesexisted between Amish and non-Amish families on health status and use of biomedicalservices; however, Amish families reported more behavioral risk factors and usedmore alternative therapies. Benefits from this assessment and planning process wereincreased public awareness about county health problems, and increased cooperationbetween the formal biomedical care system and the Amish community.

Employee Health Benefits: Corporate Strategies For Cost Containment, Judith K. Barr Feb 2014

Employee Health Benefits: Corporate Strategies For Cost Containment, Judith K. Barr

Sociological Practice

With health care costs increasing and a major portion of employee benefits attributableto health care, employers have turned their attention to a range of strategies for controllingcosts. A typology of the employer role in employee health care is presentedwhich suggests that cost containment strategies may bring increasing influence by theemployer in the health care decisions of employees. Four roles for employers havebeen identified: (1) the Enabler, providing traditional health benefits, with increasinguse of deductibles and copayments; (2) the Advocate, providing benefit and alternativedelivery options (e.g., HMOs) with incentives for less costly choices; (3) the Mediator, providing programs which intervene in health …

Black/White Differences In Cancer: A Framework For Intervention Linking Social Structure And Survival, C. Allen Haney, Elizabeth Gear Feb 2014

Black/White Differences In Cancer: A Framework For Intervention Linking Social Structure And Survival, C. Allen Haney, Elizabeth Gear

Sociological Practice

Black/White differences in cancer survival persist. Factors shown to be differentiallyrelated to survival, and to differ by race, include the extent of disease present at diagnosis, disease classification or tumor histology, and host vulnerability. It is suggestedthat efforts to reduce this survival differential generally have been unsuccessful due toa failure to accurately identify the sources of this differential. Differences in the extentof disease present at diagnosis, for example, may not be a function of failure to seekphysicians or dollars spent on health care, but may be due to differences in the natureof health care provided. Similarly, differences in socioeconomic status, lifestyle …

The Rise And Fall Of Plankton: Long-Term Changes In The Vertical Distribution Of Algae And Grazers In Lake Baikal, Siberia, Stephanie E. Hampton Feb 2014

The Rise And Fall Of Plankton: Long-Term Changes In The Vertical Distribution Of Algae And Grazers In Lake Baikal, Siberia, Stephanie E. Hampton

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Both surface water temperatures and the intensity of thermal stratification have increased recently in large lakes throughout the world. Such physical changes can be accompanied by shifts in plankton community structure, including changes in relative abundances and depth distributions. Here we analyzed 45 years of data from Lake Baikal, the world’s oldest, deepest, and most voluminous lake, to assess long-term trends in the depth distribution of pelagic phytoplankton and zooplankton. Surface water temperatures in Lake Baikal increased steadily between 1955 and 2000, resulting in a stronger thermal gradient within the top 50 m of the water column. In conjunction with …

Nuclear Interaction Between Adr-Induced P65 And P53 Mediates Cardiac Injury In Inos (−/−) Mice, Marsha P. Cole, Jitbanjong Tangpong, Terry D. Oberley, Luksana Chaiswing, Kinsley K. Kiningham, Daret K. St. Clair

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Adriamycin (ADR) treatment causes an imbalance in the levels of nitric oxide (•NO) and superoxide (O2•−) production leading to cardiac injury. Previously we demonstrated that mice lacking inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) have increased oxidative stress and mitochondrial injury. The molecular events leading to increased mitochondrial injury in iNOS deficient mice is unknown. ADR in the absence of iNOS preferentially activates a proapoptotic pathway without a concurrent increase in prosurvival pathways. Treatment with ADR leads to an increase in DNA binding activity of nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) and p53 in wildtype mice. Following ADR …

How Do Researchers Define Their Data Lifecycle And What Can We Learn From Their Definitions?, Jake R. Carlson Feb 2014

How Do Researchers Define Their Data Lifecycle And What Can We Learn From Their Definitions?, Jake R. Carlson

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

This poster presents a comparison of the data lifecycles of 32 researchers as articulated by researchers themselves. Similarities and differences between the stages within these data lifecycles are noted and implications for data service providers are discussed.

A critical element of providing data services is developing a thorough understanding of the nature of the data being produced by researchers. Data lifecycle models are being developed by organizations providing data services as a means to communicate with researchers and other stakeholders who would make use of these services. The test of an effective data lifecycle model is its ability to resonate …

Six Models Of Community Intervention: A Dialectical Synthesis Of Social Theory And Social Action, Drew Hyman Feb 2014

Six Models Of Community Intervention: A Dialectical Synthesis Of Social Theory And Social Action, Drew Hyman

Sociological Practice

Two dominant theoretical perspectives-systems theory and conflict theory-underlie major approaches to community intervention. This paper presents a conceptual linkage between models of intervention for planning and organizing as developed by Rothman and elaborated by Stockdale and major sociological theories of society. Two additional models are presented to address issues of management and administration. The six models are integrated into a typology which integrates the conflict and consensus theories of society in relation to the six strategies. The result is a synthesis of six models for community engagement which is rooted in dialectically opposed theories of society, and which addresses the …

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Abstract: We report on the early results of a survey-based assessment of stewardship activities within the Chicago Wilderness region, work conducted as a part of the Chicago ULTRA-Ex project. Chicago Wilderness is a 270 member alliance focused on preserving and enhancing biodiversity throughout northern Illinois and parts of Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan (USA). The results described include 369 stewardship groups including non-governmental organizations, community groups, municipalities and others who voluntarily filled out the survey between November 2010 and November 2011. Environment, education, community improvement, youth and recreation are the top five foci of the efforts of Chicago Wilderness Area stewards …

Public Health In Southeast Asia: Focus On Adolescent Health Research, Randy M. Page

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Outcome 1: Students will develop research and presentation skills and gain confidence in their abilities. This project directed students to work on research conducted in Thailand focusing on adolescent body image and smoking. Students participated in research planning, collecting data and making sense of results, constructing data tables, translating research instruments, developing presentations, presenting findings at international conferences, and developing a manuscript for submission. A survey instrument was constructed to assess appearance-related social pressure, body weight satisfaction, and weight loss/maintenance behaviors in adolescents. Students worked with researchers in Thailand to translate the instrument from English to Thai, and through the …
