Cold Shock Domain Proteins In Normal And Leukemic Hematopoiesis, Cheng Li Feb 2014

Cold Shock Domain Proteins In Normal And Leukemic Hematopoiesis, Cheng Li

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Cold shock domain (CSD) proteins are the most evolutionarily conserved family of nucleic-acid binding proteins. There are four functional genes that contain CSDs in humans and mice: YBX1, MSY4, MSY2, and CSDE1. YBX1 is overexpressed in most cancers, and is frequently associated with poor outcomes and chemotherapy resistance. Both YBX1 and MSY4 are highly expressed in normal hematopoietic progenitors, and both are downregulated with terminal myeloid differentiation; both genes are highly expressed in virtually all cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). These two genes are functionally redundant as well: Msy4 has been shown to complement Ybx1 function in late-stage embryogenesis …

Effect Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids On Lipoprotein Profile And Particle Size In Hispanic Women, Sarah E. Deemer, Vic Ben-Ezra, Matthew S. Hickey, George A. King, Christopher L. Melby Feb 2014

Effect Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids On Lipoprotein Profile And Particle Size In Hispanic Women, Sarah E. Deemer, Vic Ben-Ezra, Matthew S. Hickey, George A. King, Christopher L. Melby

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The effect of increased Ω3 fatty acids on lipoprotein sub-fractions has not been well studied in Hispanic women, a group with a high prevalence of dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome. The purpose of this randomized, placebo-controlled trial was to examine the effect of a 90-day (90D) combined EPA+DHA supplementation on lipoprotein profiles of Hispanic women. Twenty-seven non-diabetic women were randomly assigned to the Ω3 group (n=17, 1.9 g/day EPA+DHA) or the placebo group (n=10, 2 g/day oleic acid). At baseline (0D) and 90D a fasting blood sample was drawn for determination of lipoprotein profile and lipoprotein particle sub-fractions. For the Ω3 …

Vaporized Nicotine Inhalation Increases Arterial Pressure In Both Supine And 70o Head-Up Positions, Colin K. Dowling, Anusheela Pokhrel, Caroline A. Rickards, Donovan L. Fogt, William H. Cooke

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

ABSTRACT

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are popular with smokers looking for a healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes. E-cigs utilize a battery, activated on inhalation, to heat propylene glycol-suspended nicotine which is inhaled as vapor, and which does not include harmful poisons found in conventional cigarettes. Although the health claims of e-cigs continue to be debated, the effects of nicotine delivered as vapor on the cardiovascular system have not been studied. Because nicotine is a sympathomemetic agent, we tested the hypothesis that e-cigs would increase arterial pressure and protect against challenges associated with upright posture. Ten non-smoking subjects (5 male) participated in …

ABSTRACT

Whole body energy expenditure (i.e., RMR) increases during acute cold exposure. Whether this increase in energy expenditure persists in the post-cold term in humans due to non-shivering thermogenesis has not yet been evaluated. Therefore we tested the hypothesis that RMR would be different directly following acute cold exposure. …

Decrements Of Muscle Protein Synthesis With Unloading Are Not Due To Insufficient Concentrations Of Intramuscular Leucine, Shaik T. Ullah, Kevin Shimkus, Yasaman Shirazi-Fard, Camilo Pohlenz, Jacqueline Perticone, Del Gatlin, Harry Hogan, James Fluckey

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Skeletal muscle mass and strength play critical roles in quality of life, and significant muscle atrophy contributes to reduced function and can exacerbate some disease states. It is well-known that persistent reductions of mechanical loading in skeletal muscle result in degeneration. Generally, reductions of muscle protein synthesis are, at least in part, a major culprit with muscle loss under these conditions, and numerous countermeasures such as exercise and nutritional supplements, known to stimulate protein synthesis have been designed to maintain muscle mass under those conditions. Amino acid supplementation, particularly with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), has been suggested as a countermeasure …

Abstract

Vespa amino acid mixture (VAAM) is a nutritional supplement derived from the Asian Mandarin Wasp (Vespa Mandarina). VAAM has been shown to enhance lipolysis in rat adipocytes and is purported to improve endurance performance via enhanced fat metabolism. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects VAAM on cycling performance during a 20k time trial. 10 trained, male cyclists …

Validity Of A Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire For Adults With Intellectual Disability, Brooke Marie Bouza Feb 2014

Validity Of A Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire For Adults With Intellectual Disability, Brooke Marie Bouza

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Nutrition professionals consider individuals with intellectual disabilities to be nutritionally vulnerable or at risk for becoming overweight or obese. Presently there is limited empirical evidence regarding the nutritional habits and education of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Currently the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program has become the largest global public health organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual disabilities. In 2012, Special Olympics Texas provided nearly 1,600 health screenings to athletes. The screenings provide surveillance information for public health organizations in the use of health planning, prevention, and promotion. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of a …

Women With Pregnancy Induced Hypertension Have Higher Risk Of Developing Essential Hypertension, Amna Qasim Feb 2014

Women With Pregnancy Induced Hypertension Have Higher Risk Of Developing Essential Hypertension, Amna Qasim

AKU Symposium

Background: Hypertension is a significant health burden that leads to increased morbidity and mortality. There is limited data in literature on the association of pregnancy induced hypertension with the development of essential hypertension in future from this south Asian population of women who are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases as compared to men.

Objectives: To determine the association of essential hypertension with Pregnancy induced hypertension in women presenting to medicine clinics.

Methods: This was a case-control study conducted over 12 months in the out-patient medicine clinics of the Aga Khan University Hospital. Women patients aged >18 years …
