Using Experiential And Collaborative Methods With Undergraduates And Older Persons As Part Of An Introduction To Gerontology Course, Amy Ramsey, A. Nancy Mendoza, Joyce Weil

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

This study examines an Introduction to Gerontology course for undergraduate students that integrates experiential and collaborative learning experiences as part of a general course requirement. Experiential learning encourages students to go outside of the classroom and learn about aging from an older person in a field setting. The collaborative group approach is designed to have peers work together in the course. This study used qualitative methods to examine undergraduates’ learning experiences as a result of participation in a multiple-interview and groupwork-based project through their enrollment in the Introduction to Gerontology course. Content analysis was used to analyze multiple sources of …

Target Shooting As A Serious Leisure Pursuit–An Exploratory Study Of The Motivations Driving Participant Engagement, David Spencer Martin, Douglas Murray, Martin A. O'Neill, Martin Maccarthy, Jason Gogue

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

The current study is an attempt to better understand the motivations of consumers that engage in target shooting as a serious leisure activity. The instrument design was based on the Leisure Satisfaction Scale and the Leisure Motivation Scale. A total of 5502 usable surveys were collected utilising the Internet and a website related to gun ownership and target shooting. Exploratory in nature, results indicated that three variables in particular, Escapism, Social Interaction and Self-Actualisation, were primary motivators when it comes to engagement in target shooting as a serious leisure pursuit. These findings have important implications to the target-shooting community, and …

How To Eat To Live: Black Nationalism And The Post-1964 Culinary Turn, Jennifer Jensen Wallach Jul 2014

How To Eat To Live: Black Nationalism And The Post-1964 Culinary Turn, Jennifer Jensen Wallach

Study the South

Beginning in the late 1960s, an increasing number of black food reformers rejected, or at least complicated, what they regarded as standard American food practices. They asserted a separate black national identity and a competing value system. Culinary black nationalists did not conceive of food decisions as a series of trivial personal consumer choices but rather as an arena for communal activism. The construction of black nationalist foodways was both an evolutionary process and a dialectical one. Radical food reformers analyzed white-owned eating establishments and dominant American foodways in opposition to southern, regional cuisine and in contrast to a vegetarian-inclined …

Are Gopher Tortosies (Gopherus Polyphemus Daudin) Comapatible With Cows?, Thomas William Hentges

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many Gopher Tortoise populations are in steep decline throughout Florida, and various measures have been attempted to curb the trend. One such measure is to relocate tortoises to protected recipient sites on private lands. The majority of private lands in Florida are used for cattle, however, production and the effect of cattle production on tortoises is not known. Here, I tested six parameters of tortoise behavior by monitoring 1403 gopher tortoises released at the Barthle Brothers Ranch, Pasco County Florida, between August 2009 and December 2012. The parameters tested were (1) burrow density, (2) burrow spacing, (3) burrow relocation, (4) …

Metabolomics Analysis Identifies Intestinal Microbiota-Derived Biomarkers Of Colonization Resistance In Clindamycin-Treated Mice, Robin L.P. Jump, Myreen Tomas, Abhishek Deshpande, Curtis J. Donskey Jul 2014

Metabolomics Analysis Identifies Intestinal Microbiota-Derived Biomarkers Of Colonization Resistance In Clindamycin-Treated Mice, Robin L.P. Jump, Myreen Tomas, Abhishek Deshpande, Curtis J. Donskey

Faculty Scholarship

Background: The intestinal microbiota protect the host against enteric pathogens through a defense mechanism termed colonization resistance. Antibiotics excreted into the intestinal tract may disrupt colonization resistance and alter normal metabolic functions of the microbiota. We used a mouse model to test the hypothesis that alterations in levels of bacterial metabolites in fecal specimens could provide useful biomarkers indicating disrupted or intact colonization resistance after antibiotic treatment. Methods: To assess in vivo colonization resistance, mice were challenged with oral vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus or Clostridium difficile spores at varying time points after treatment with the lincosamide antibiotic clindamycin. For concurrent groups of …

Tooth Loss Strongly Associates With Malnutrition In Chronic Kidney Disease, Efthimia Effie Ioannidou, Helen Swede Jul 2014

Tooth Loss Strongly Associates With Malnutrition In Chronic Kidney Disease, Efthimia Effie Ioannidou, Helen Swede

UCHC Articles - Research

Background

In chronic kidney disease (CKD), inadequate nutritional intake, inflammation, and increased oxidative stress have been the major contributing factors in malnutrition pathogenesis. However, there is still a paucity of evidence assessing the magnitude of the effect of tooth loss on malnutrition in CKD populations. The authors hypothesize that among patients with CKD, tooth loss may affect nutritional status, using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1988 to 1994 (NHANES III).

Methods

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated based on cystatin C levels using the relevant equation. Urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (albuminuria) was calculated in milligrams per gram with a …

The Fire-Oak Literature Of Eastern North America: Synthesis And Guidelines, Patrick D. Brose, Daniel C. Dey, Thomas A. Waldrop Jul 2014

The Fire-Oak Literature Of Eastern North America: Synthesis And Guidelines, Patrick D. Brose, Daniel C. Dey, Thomas A. Waldrop

Joint Fire Science Program Synthesis Reports

Guidelines for using prescribed fire to regenerate and restore upland oak forests, woodlands, and savannas in eastern North America were developed by synthesizing the results of more than 100 scientific publications. The first four chapters provide background information on the values of oak ecosystems, eastern fire history, oak’s adaptations to fire, and the findings of fire-oak research conducted over the past 50 years. The final chapter synthesizes that background information into guidelines that explain how to use prescribed fire to facilitate oak seedling establishment, release oak reproduction from competing mesophytic hardwoods, and rehabilitate open oak woodlands, oak savannas, and scrub …

Two Essays On Large Agricultural Producer Buying Behaviors, Jacqueline K. Holland Jul 2014

Two Essays On Large Agricultural Producer Buying Behaviors, Jacqueline K. Holland

Open Access Theses

The trend of consolidation of large farms into high volume operations has continued over the past 30 years. Large farm management is a juggling act of a variety of biological processes, financial management, technology adaptation, and human resource development activities. This research looks to provide insights into the underlying management psychology of those large farmers to serve not only as a benchmark for other producers, but to provide customer information to agribusinesses so these firms can strengthen their relationships with their large farmer customers. The first part of this analysis will use Best-Worst modeling to examine five predetermined success factors …
