Achieving Flourishing City Schools And Communities - Corporate Reform, Neoliberal Urbanism, And The Right To The City, Alex Means

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

This essay critiques the ideological assertions of corporate school reform and discusses how these logics perpetuate failure in urban education. Drawing on theories of neoliberal urbanism, the right to the city, and the commons, the essay argues that educational researchers and advocates need to reframe the values of urban education in line with a conception of human flourishing and democratic potentiality.

Relationships Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders And Their Fathers, Terry Keller, Julie Ramisch, Marsha Carolan

The Qualitative Report

This phenomenological study investigated the relationships between 7 fathers and their sons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Seven major themes emerged: Shared Activities, Developmental Sensitivity, Emotional Understanding, Fighting the Label, Fatherhood Expectations, Parent Responsibility, and Fatherhood Isolation. Fathers were sensitive to their sons’ emotional needs and developmental milestones. Clinicians can help fathers to develop appropriate relationships with their children that involve shared activities. Clinicians can also assist fathers in coping with isolation and expectations regarding fatherhood, developing desired fatherhood roles, and finding appropriate shared activities with their children.

Prospective Development Of A Mobile Farmers Market In Mountain View, Anchorage, Alaska, Shaina Seidner

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

The goal of this project practicum was to provide information to help improve food security in Mountain View, a neighborhood located in Anchorage, Alaska, by facilitating increased access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food for low income populations. A mobile farmers market in Anchorage could help achieve this goal. Mobile markets are effectively farmers markets on wheels, allowing food to meet consumers where they live. Such markets are gaining popularity in the Lower 48 and data documenting their successes have been emerging. This project aimed to compile information for a mobile farmers market that could: 1) increase access to, and …

Growth Response Of Lutz Spruce Saplings To The Removal Of A Herbaceous Competitor And The Application Of Fertilizer In Southeast Alaska, Emily Dickson Aug 2014

Growth Response Of Lutz Spruce Saplings To The Removal Of A Herbaceous Competitor And The Application Of Fertilizer In Southeast Alaska, Emily Dickson

Forest Sciences

Herbaceous competitor species such as fireweed can impact future survival and growth of Lutz (Picea x lutzii Little, Pinaceae) spruce saplings. Fertilizer is applied to crop trees in order to supply more nutrients to promote growth. However, fertilizer benefits competitor species as well. Literature regarding the impacts of competition for resources between fireweed and spruce saplings are lacking, but the impacts of resource competition on seedling growth and fireweed are documented as significant. Seedlings are distinguished from saplings by differences in height and/or diameter. In order to test the influence of both competitor species and added fertilizer, we analyzed growth …

Identifying Bearded And Ringed Seal Diet - A Comparison Of Stomach Contents, Stable Isotopes, Fatty Acids, And Fecal Dna, Anna Laura Bryan Aug 2014

Identifying Bearded And Ringed Seal Diet - A Comparison Of Stomach Contents, Stable Isotopes, Fatty Acids, And Fecal Dna, Anna Laura Bryan

Biological Sciences

Stomach contents, stable isotopes, fatty acids, and more recently fecal DNA are commonly used to infer the diet of marine mammals. However, how complementary or contradictory these methods are, especially when considering individual diet variability, remains poorly understood. This study assessed the differences in the dietary information resulting from stomach contents, stable isotopes, and fatty acids for adult bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus), and fishes identified from stomach contents and fecal DNA for bearded and ringed seals (Pusa hispida), harvested in Alaska for subsistence use. Stomach contents and fecal DNA provided information on recently consumed prey. In contrast, stable carbon and …

Effects Of Defoliation On Sandbar Willow (Salix Interior) Chemistry, Production, And Subsequent Overwinter Browsing By Mammalian Herbivores, Brian Patrick Allman Aug 2014

Effects Of Defoliation On Sandbar Willow (Salix Interior) Chemistry, Production, And Subsequent Overwinter Browsing By Mammalian Herbivores, Brian Patrick Allman

Biological Sciences

Herbivory can cause changes in plant characteristics, allowing temporally isolated herbivores to indirectly affect one another through their effects on shared host plants. The objective of this thesis was to test how defoliation of the willow Salix interior affects current annual stem production and chemistry, and how changes in these traits may indirectly affect mammalian herbivores. I studied the effect of manual defoliation on S. interior leaf and stem chemistry, and the effect of insect folivory on S. interior stem chemistry, production, and mammal herbivore offtake. Manual defoliation of S. interior affected stem chemistry by significantly increasing stem N concentration …

Developing Core Competencies For Training Of The Alaska College And Career Advising Corps, Greg B. Monrad

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

For business and organizations, employee training directly impacts the overall performance, competitiveness, and innovation which could lead to its ultimate success, or failure. In addition, training should directly relate to the values and goals of the organization. In the United States, over 200 billion dollars is spent on more than 20 billion hours of formal and informal training each year. Much is done without a framework to direct it to insure is addressing needs of employees and the organization. By designing training programs around specific core competencies, businesses and organizations can align training with the specific skills, knowledge and behaviors …

Caries Differences Among Sub-Saharan Africans, Fawn Carter Aug 2014

Caries Differences Among Sub-Saharan Africans, Fawn Carter

Anthropology

Teeth are a vital source of data for interpreting ancient lifestyles because of their high preservation potential and direct association with food. Understanding dental pathologies such as dental caries (cavities), can provide valuable information regarding diet and health. The objective of the present study is to compare caries prevalence among sub-Saharan African populations to determine whether any significant differences exist through space, time, economy, and between the sexes. A few small-scale dental pathology studies have been undertaken on specific populations and regions, but until now none have encompassed the entirety of sub-Saharan Africa from the Late Stone Age through modern …

Characterization And Delineation Of Caribou Habitat On Unimak Island Using Remote Sensing Techniques, Brian M. Atkinson Aug 2014

Characterization And Delineation Of Caribou Habitat On Unimak Island Using Remote Sensing Techniques, Brian M. Atkinson

Agriculture and Horticulture

The assessment of herbivore habitat quality is traditionally based on quantifying the forages available to the animal across their home range through ground-based techniques. While these methods are highly accurate, they can be time-consuming and highly expensive, especially for herbivores that occupy vast spatial landscapes. The Unimak Island caribou herd has been decreasing in the last decade at rates that have prompted discussion of management intervention. Frequent inclement weather in this region of Alaska has provided for little opportunity to study the caribou forage habitat on Unimak Island. The overall objectives of this study were two-fold 1) to assess the …

Caries Prevalence In Ancient Egyptians And Nubians, Konstantine Triambelas Aug 2014

Caries Prevalence In Ancient Egyptians And Nubians, Konstantine Triambelas

Anthropology

This thesis presents an expanded bioarchaeological perspective to quantitative analyses of dental caries in the remains of 1842 ancient Egyptians and Nubians. The skeletal samples from 17 Egyptian and 15 Nubian cemeteries are represented by both sexes, and span a period from 14000 BCE-1450 CE. Considering that a skeletal population of this size has never been previously evaluated for dental caries, this thesis can make a considerable contribution to a better understanding of the variability encountered in dental caries patterns over time, as these are manifested within the bio/cultural/ecological context of the Nile Valley. Dental caries are the decomposition of …

Assessment Of The Reproductive Ecology Of Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) And Northern Sea Otters (Enhydra Lutris Kenyoni) In Alaska Using Subsistence Biosampling Programs, Emily A. Hutchinson

Marine Biology

Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) and northern sea otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) in Alaska have experienced extreme fluctuations in abundance in recent decades. The purpose of this study was to examine growth and determine the age and size at sexual maturity in populations of these two species, as spatial and temporal variations in environmental conditions and changes in ecological constraints as a result of population fluctuations can influence growth and reproductive characteristics of individuals. All samples for this research were collected via biosampling, the collection of measurements and biological tissue samples, as a component of subsistence harvesting by Alaska Natives. In …

Tracking Carbon Sources Through An Arctic Marine Food Web: Insights From Fatty Acids And Their Carbon Stable Isotopes, Shiway Wang, N/A 王小葳 Aug 2014

Tracking Carbon Sources Through An Arctic Marine Food Web: Insights From Fatty Acids And Their Carbon Stable Isotopes, Shiway Wang, N/A 王小葳

Marine Biology

Marine production across the Bering-Chukchi continental shelf is influenced by seasonal sea ice dynamics and climatic conditions. Of particular importance is variability in the magnitude and timing of annual phytoplankton production in the water column and in sea ice, and effects of such variability on food web composition and productivity. Of primary concern is the long-term effect of the projected loss of Arctic sea ice on ecosystem productivity and stability, and the fate of upper trophic level species. I examined a portion of the Bering-Chukchi Sea food web by analyzing the fatty acid composition and stable carbon isotope ratios of …

Exploring The Connection Between Salmon And Well-Being To Strengthen A Food System Intervention In Western Alaska, Jennifer Nu Aug 2014

Exploring The Connection Between Salmon And Well-Being To Strengthen A Food System Intervention In Western Alaska, Jennifer Nu

Biological Sciences

Effective interventions aimed at changing dietary behaviors in indigenous communities can benefit from understanding local perceptions and values connected to culturally important foods. Formative research in collaboration with community members to explore these perceptions is a necessary step in the process of designing effective interventions, yet few studies elaborate on the details of this process. Research conducted in a remote Yup'ik community in Western Alaska explored the connection between salmon and well-being to strengthen a food system intervention. Qualitative data were collected, collaboratively reviewed with a community work group, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Nine major themes emerged from the …

Relationships Among Physical Activity, Diet, And Obesity Measures During Adolescence, Janne Holmberg Maier Aug 2014

Relationships Among Physical Activity, Diet, And Obesity Measures During Adolescence, Janne Holmberg Maier

Biological Sciences

Today's high prevalence of obesity is a concern especially in youth. Physical activity and diet are both important factors associated with weight management, and current recommendations are to consume a diet low in saturated fat and high in fiber, fruit and vegetables and to participate in frequent and regular physical activity. Adherence to recommendations is low, a factor that is strongly correlated with development of obesity and associated chronic diseases such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease. While associations between diet and physical activity are well established, investigation of changes in their association during growth is lacking. This thesis uses five …
