Phylogenetic Analysis Of Algal Symbionts Associated With Four North American Amphibian Egg Masses, Eunsoo Kim, Yuan Lin, Ryan R. Kerney, Lili Blumenberg, Cory Bishop

Biology Faculty Publications

Egg masses of the yellow-spotted salamander Ambystoma maculatum form an association with the green alga “Oophila amblystomatis” (Lambert ex Wille), which, in addition to growing within individual egg capsules, has recently been reported to invade embryonic tissues and cells. The binomial O. amblystomatis refers to the algae that occur in A. maculatum egg capsules, but it is unknown whether this population of symbionts constitutes one or several different algal taxa. Moreover, it is unknown whether egg masses across the geographic range of A. maculatum, or other amphibians, associate with one or multiple algal taxa. To address these …

Public, Private, Popular: Pop Performers, Liberalism And The Limits Of Rights, Matt Stahl Nov 2014

Public, Private, Popular: Pop Performers, Liberalism And The Limits Of Rights, Matt Stahl

FIMS Publications

American popular music discourse and pop performers' political practice frequently give prominence to questions of rights, particularly in relation to musical property and labour. This article examines these two rights issues as they appear in popular media and in lawmaking. The article invokes the liberal division of life into "public" and "private" realms in order to explicate the mechanics of rights claims in media and legislative forums, and to explore their relationship with aspects of liberal common sense. It draws on a political-theoretical framework to problematize liberalism's basic division of life into "public" and "private" realms, and suggests that pop …

Creating Digital Comics In Response To Literature: Aesthetics, Aesthetic Transactions, And Meaning Making, Kelly Wissman, Sean Costello Nov 2014

Creating Digital Comics In Response To Literature: Aesthetics, Aesthetic Transactions, And Meaning Making, Kelly Wissman, Sean Costello

Literacy Teaching & Learning Faculty Scholarship

This article explores how eighth-grade students in a reading support class responded to the novel The Outsiders with the software program Comic Life. Rather than viewing this work from a new technologies or digital literacies perspective, we argue that unique insights can be gained by analyzing students’ digital compositions with lenses attuned to the arts, the aesthetic transaction, and student perspectives. In our presentation of four case studies, we are informed by two conceptualizations of aesthetics. First, we consider the aesthetic qualities of students' comics by analyzing the presence and impact of image selection, color choice, and overall design on …

Aplikasi Model Rasch Untuk Penelitian Ilmu-Ilmu Sosial (Edisi Revisi), B. Sumintono, W. Widhiarso

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The Reeal Model: A Framework For Faculty Training In Online Discussion Facilitation, Laurie Bedford Nov 2014

The Reeal Model: A Framework For Faculty Training In Online Discussion Facilitation, Laurie Bedford

Center for Faculty Excellence Publications

Discussion forums are a primary tool for interactions in the online classroom. Discussions are a critical part of the learning process for students, and instructor facilitation should reflect this importance. Effective instructor discussion facilitation encourages students, provides evidence and analysis and links the discussion to subsequent discourse. However, instructors receive little guidance in strategies to meet these expectations. To fill this gap, the REEAL Model is presented to support faculty in developing appropriate discussion responses. In addition, a transcript analysis technique is described which can be used as part of a faculty development program to ensure faculty have appropriate skills …

Music, Personhood, And Eudaimonia: Implications For Educative And Ethical Music Education, David J. Elliott, Marissa Silverman Nov 2014

Music, Personhood, And Eudaimonia: Implications For Educative And Ethical Music Education, David J. Elliott, Marissa Silverman

John J. Cali School of Music Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper proposes that educative and ethical music making and teaching, which is based on a praxial philosophy of music education (Elliott and Silverman, 2014), can be carried out in a variety of ways that create places and spaces, in schools and community settings, for a variety of human values or "goods" that include, but go beyond, making and listening to classical instrumental music, or any other kind of music, for "the music itself." One premise of this philosophical discussion is that music does not have one value; music has numerous values, depending on the ways in which it is …

Unexpected Challenges: Youth, Public Housing Reform And Mixed-Income Development, Mark L. Joseph Nov 2014

Unexpected Challenges: Youth, Public Housing Reform And Mixed-Income Development, Mark L. Joseph

Faculty Scholarship

In this brief, we explore the role of and responses to youth in three mixed-income communities in Chicago— Oakwood Shores, Park Boulevard, and Westhaven Park—built on the footprint of large public housing complexes as part of the Chicago Housing Authority’s (CHA) Plan for Transformation. We draw on the perspectives of residents and development professionals expressed in interviews, focus groups, and through field observation, although we were not able to speak with youth directly. We examine both expectations about youth in mixedincome developments and perceptions of how young people contribute to social dynamics and interaction in these contexts. We also explore …

The Informal Property Rights Of Boomerang Children In The Home, Shelly Kreiczer-Levy Nov 2014

The Informal Property Rights Of Boomerang Children In The Home, Shelly Kreiczer-Levy

Maryland Law Review

Adult children living with their parents represent an increasingly common social phenomenon in the United States that challenges the boundaries of both the family and formal property rights. What is the legal status of adult children living with their parents? Do parents have any additional duties when they rescind permission for their child to live with them? Property and family scholars have not addressed this important issue. This Article fills the void. Instead of treating people who live together as strangers, owing no legal obligations to one another, I argue that under certain conditions living with others creates a property …

Conceptualizing Copyright Enforcement And Management In The Digital Age Through Two Models: The Right-Holder-Centric Model And Cooperative Model, Yang Sun Nov 2014

Conceptualizing Copyright Enforcement And Management In The Digital Age Through Two Models: The Right-Holder-Centric Model And Cooperative Model, Yang Sun

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the issues of copyright enforcement and management. Especially, the research looks into how the digital technology reshapes the general perceptions and landscape of the copyright system in terms of online enforcement and management. Stepping into the digital age, the interaction between copyright holders and other parties, including online users and the ISPs, establishes two coexisting models—the right-holder-centric model and the cooperative model. Therefore, the dissertation analyzes which model is more appropriate and efficient with respect to online copyright enforcement and management.

As a matter of fact, the coexistences of two models provides copyright holders and other …

Parental Mentoring: An African American Approach To Raising Daughters With Self-Esteem, Qiana Brandy Smith Nov 2014

Parental Mentoring: An African American Approach To Raising Daughters With Self-Esteem, Qiana Brandy Smith

Dissertations

There is an ample amount of research that documents the positive effect of self-esteem on a child established through an affirmative parental or mentoring relationship, verses a specific parent-mentoring approach designed with a curriculum to enhance the positive self-esteem of African-American daughters based on the relationship with their maternal parent. The purpose of this qualitative study was to answer the following research questions: what strategies and behaviors are used by parents in African-American families to affect the self-esteem of female children and adolescents and, how can strategies and behaviors exhibited by African-American parental mentors be organized in a teachable format …

Dynamical Behavior Of Probe Molecules And Dominant Role Of Cosurfactants In Reverse Micelles, Jia Qi, Bridget L. Gourley Nov 2014

Dynamical Behavior Of Probe Molecules And Dominant Role Of Cosurfactants In Reverse Micelles, Jia Qi, Bridget L. Gourley

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Reverse micelles (RM) are nanopools of water surrounded by surfactant molecules in a non-polar solvent. Our studies investigated properties of RM probe molecules in the interfacial boundary between water and non-polar solvents. Reichardt’s dye, a probe molecule, was used to uncover properties of RM. UV/vis spectroscopy of Reichardt’s dye reveals information about polarity and the dye’s approximate residential location and also helps confirm molecular orbital energy diagram. We discovered an interesting phenomenon with Reichardt’s dye in RM. Surprisingly, the UV/vis spectrum of Reicahrdt’s dye in CTAB RM with octanol as a cosurfactant exhibits decreasing absorbance and a blue shift. Reichardt’s …

Stand With Sam: Missouri, Survivor Benefits, And Discrimination Against Same-Sex Couples, Lesley A. Hall Nov 2014

Stand With Sam: Missouri, Survivor Benefits, And Discrimination Against Same-Sex Couples, Lesley A. Hall

Missouri Law Review

In Glossip v. Missouri Department of Transportation and Highway Patrol Employees’ Retirement System, the Supreme Court of Missouri perpetuated these fears. The court refused to identify sexual orientation as a classification worthy of heightened or “intermediate” equal protection scrutiny, signaling to Missourians that homosexuality is still something to discount, fear, and hide. The holding also erroneously deprived Kelly Glossip of Corporal Engelhard’s survivor benefits after Engelhard, his partner of many years, was killed in the line of duty. This Note discusses the resolution of this case and analyzes why the court’s holding demonstrates a regressive step for gays and lesbians …
