Improving Tennis Player Performance Using System Development Interpretations Methodology, Dotan Shvorin, Kevin Taaffe Oct 2014

Improving Tennis Player Performance Using System Development Interpretations Methodology, Dotan Shvorin, Kevin Taaffe

Publications

This research demonstrates a unique analytical approach to improving a player's performance in the game of tennis. We introduce a system development interpretations (SDI) methodology for associating player characteristics and factors in a hierarchical structure. We then show how this tool is applied in a human performance environment such as tennis. This approach was developed as a multi-disciplinary quality tool for process improvement that identifies factor dependencies and depicts their impact on the resulting player performance. From the implementation of the SDI methodology, the research was able to define the tennis player's difficulties and it has allowed the researchers to …

Bullish On Forestry Careers, Steven H. Bullard, Thomas J. Straka Oct 2014

Bullish On Forestry Careers, Steven H. Bullard, Thomas J. Straka

Faculty Publications

During the next decade, baby boomer-aged foresters, those born from 1946 to 1964, will be retiring in large numbers. This retirement trend is true for all sectors of forestry employment, from state and federal agencies to private firms and industries.

Forestry employers in both public and private sectors are clamoring for more graduates, as well as for more diverse graduates, from forestry degree programs. With looming retirements and industry growth, employers can project the number of positions opening, and they are aware that U.S. forestry schools are not producing sufficient graduates to fill the positions.

Generalized Theoretical Criteria For Annihilation Of Hiv-1 Virions During Haart, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin

Math and Computer Science Faculty Working Papers

Aims: This paper is an elaborate and quantitative attempt to construct medically applicable mathematical models and derive criteria for efficacious Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) protocol for an AIDS patient. The patho-physiological dynamics of Human Immuno-deficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) induced AIDS during HAART is modeled by a system of non-linear deterministic differential equations. The physiologically relevant and clinically plausible equations depict the dynamics of uninfected CD4+ T cells (x1), HIV-1 infected CD4+ T cells (x2), HIV-1 virions in the blood plasma (x3), HIV-1 specific CD8+ T cells (x4), and the concentration of HAART drug molecules (x5). The major objective …

Benchmarking Professional Development Practices Across Youth-Serving Organizations: Implications For Extension, Barry A. Garst, Sarah Baughman, Nancy Franz Oct 2014

Benchmarking Professional Development Practices Across Youth-Serving Organizations: Implications For Extension, Barry A. Garst, Sarah Baughman, Nancy Franz

Publications

Examining traditional and contemporary professional development practices of youth-serving organizations can inform practices across Extension, particularly in light of the barriers that have been noted for effectively developing the professional competencies of Extension educators. With professional development systems changing quickly, particularly through online education and blended learning opportunities, benchmarks need to guide new research around best practices in professional development. Although many program providers have not established benchmarks for professional development, a few cases exist. This article examines the current state of professional development practices of youth-serving organizations and offers recommendations for improving Extension professional development practices.

Synthetic Data Generation For The Internet Of Things, Jason Anderson, K. E. Kennedy, Linh B. Ngo, Andre Luckow, Amy Apon

Publications

The concept of Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly moving from a vision to being pervasive in our everyday lives. This can be observed in the integration of connected sensors from a multitude of devices such as mobile phones, healthcare equipment, and vehicles. There is a need for the development of infrastructure support and analytical tools to handle IoT data, which are naturally big and complex. But, research on IoT data can be constrained by concerns about the release of privately owned data. In this paper, we present the design and implementation results of a synthetic IoT data generation framework. …

Data Analytics For Power Utility Storm Planning, Lan Lin, Aldo Dagnino, Derek Doran, Swapna S. Gokhale

Kno.e.sis Publications

As the world population grows, recent climatic changes seem to bring powerful storms to populated areas. The impact of these storms on utility services is devastating. Hurricane Sandy is a recent example of the enormous damages that storms can inflict on infrastructure, society, and the economy. Quick response to these emergencies represents a big challenge to electric power utilities. Traditionally utilities develop preparedness plans for storm emergency situations based on the experience of utility experts and with limited use of historical data. With the advent of the Smart Grid, utilities are incorporating automation and sensing technologies in their grids and …

Dual Channel-Based Network Traffic Authentication, David Irakiza Oct 2014

Dual Channel-Based Network Traffic Authentication, David Irakiza

Doctoral Dissertations

In a local network or the Internet in general, data that is transmitted between two computers (also known as network traffic or simply, traffic) in that network is usually classified as being of a malicious or of a benign nature by a traffic authentication system employing databases of previously observed malicious or benign traffic signatures, i.e., blacklists or whitelists, respectively. These lists typically consist of either the destinations (i.e., IP addresses or domain names) to which traffic is being sent or the statistical properties of the traffic, e.g., packet size, rate of connection establishment, etc. The drawback with the list-based …

Studies Of Angular Correlations Of Jets With The Atlas Detector, Rajivalochan Subramaniam Oct 2014

Studies Of Angular Correlations Of Jets With The Atlas Detector, Rajivalochan Subramaniam

Doctoral Dissertations

The strong force is one of the four fundamental forces and its strength is given by the coupling constant αs. The theory that describes the strong interaction is Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and it explains the interactions between quarks and gluons. The strong coupling constant is the only free parameter in the QCD Lagrangian if the quark masses are fixed. Determinations of αs provide direct tests of perturbative QCD calculations. The collimated sprays of particles originating from the quark and gluon interactions are called jets. The ratio of jet cross sections are sensitive to α s and are …

Snyder-Robinson Syndrome (SRS) is a rare mental retardation disorder which is caused by the malfunctioning of an enzyme, the spermine synthase (SMS), which functions as a homo-dimer. The malfunctioning of SMS in SRS patients is associated with several identified missense mutations that occur away from the active site. This investigation deals with a particular SRS-causing mutation, the G56S mutation, which was shown computationally and experimentally to destabilize the SMS homo-dimer and thus to abolish SMS enzymatic activity. As a proof-of-concept, we explore the possibility to restore the enzymatic activity of the malfunctioning SMS mutant G56S by stabilizing the dimer through …

Capacity-Related Driver Behavior On Modern Roundabouts Built On High-Speed Roads, Shaikh Ahmad Oct 2014

Capacity-Related Driver Behavior On Modern Roundabouts Built On High-Speed Roads, Shaikh Ahmad

Open Access Theses

The objective of this thesis was to investigate the factors that affect capacity-related driver behavior on modern roundabouts built on high-speed roads. The capacity of roundabouts is strongly affected by the behavior of drivers as represented by critical headway (critical gap) and follow-up headway (follow-up time). The effects of heavy vehicles (single-unit truck, bus, and semi-trailer) and area type (rural or urban) on roundabout capacity were investigated by comparing the critical headways for roundabouts located on high-speed and low-speed roads. The effects of nighttime conditions (in the presence of street lighting) were also considered. Data were collected using the Purdue …

Wi-Fi Real Time Location Systems, Benjamin A. Doll Oct 2014

Wi-Fi Real Time Location Systems, Benjamin A. Doll

Open Access Theses

This thesis objective was to determine the viability of utilizing an untrained Wi-Fi real time location system as a GPS alternative for indoor environments. Background research showed that GPS is rarely able to penetrate buildings to provide reliable location data. The benefit of having location information in a facility and how they might be used for disaster or emergency relief personnel and their resources motivated this research. A building was selected with a well-deployed Wi-Fi infrastructure and its untrained location feature was used to determine the distance between the specified test points and the system identified location. It was found …

Uncertainty, Irreversibility, And Investment In Secondgeneration Biofuels, Tanner Joseph Mccarty Oct 2014

Uncertainty, Irreversibility, And Investment In Secondgeneration Biofuels, Tanner Joseph Mccarty

Open Access Theses

The present study formalizes and quantifies the importance of uncertainty for investment in a corn-stover based cellulosic biofuel plant. Using a real options model we recover prices of gasoline that would trigger entry into the market and calculate the portion of that entry trigger price required to cover cost and the portion that corresponds to risk premium. We then discuss the effect of managerial flexibility on the entry risk premium and the prices of gasoline that would trigger mothballing, reactivation, and exit. Results show that the risk premium required by plants to enter the second-generation biofuel market is likely to …

Optimization Of Switch Virtual Keyboard By Using Computational Modelling, Xiao Zhang Oct 2014

Optimization Of Switch Virtual Keyboard By Using Computational Modelling, Xiao Zhang

Open Access Theses

In this thesis, I first reviewed some keyboard technologies used by people with motor difficulties, and described design elements that influence efficiency. I cast the design of a switch keyboard as an optimization problem, and arrangement of keys on such a keyboard as a Mixed Integer Programming problem. One significant variable in the MIP problem, the error rate, is related to several other variables. I treated modeling of the error rate as a parameter estimation problem, and used a data mining method. I designed HCI experiments to gather data for parameter estimation, using Bayesian logistic regression model. The empirical data …

How To Gauge Unknown Unknowns: A Possible Theoretical Explanation Of The Usual Safety Factor Of 2, Joe Lorkowski, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2014

How To Gauge Unknown Unknowns: A Possible Theoretical Explanation Of The Usual Safety Factor Of 2, Joe Lorkowski, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To gauge the accuracy of a measuring instrument, engineers analyze possible factors contributing to the instrument's inaccuracy. In addition to known factors, however, there are usually unknown factors which also contribute to the instrument's inaccuracy. To properly gauge the instrument's accuracy -- and thus, to make sure that we do not compromise our safety by underestimating the inaccuracy -- we need to also take these "unknown unknowns" into account. In practice, this is usually done by multiplying the original estimate for inaccuracy by a "safety" factor of 2. In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this empirical …

Likert-Type Fuzzy Uncertainty From A Traditional Decision Making Viewpoint: How Symmetry Helps Explain Human Decision Making (Including Seemingly Irrational Behavior), Joe Lorkowski, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the main methods for eliciting the values of the membership function μ(x) is to use the Likert-type scales, i.e., to ask the user to mark his or her degree of certainty by an appropriate mark k on a scale from 0 to n and take μ(x) = k/n. In this paper, we show how to describe this process in terms of the traditional decision making, and we conclude that the resulting membership degrees incorporate both probability and utility information. It is therefore not surprising that fuzzy techniques often work better than probabilistic techniques (which only take into account …

Solar Sail Trajectory Design In The Earth-Moon Circular Restricted Three Body Problem, Ashwati Das Oct 2014

Solar Sail Trajectory Design In The Earth-Moon Circular Restricted Three Body Problem, Ashwati Das

Open Access Theses

The quest to explore the Moon has helped resolve scientific questions, has spurred leaps in technology development, and has revealed Earth's celestial companion to be a gateway to other destinations. With a renewed focus on returning to the Moon in this decade, alternatives to chemical propulsion systems are becoming attractive methods to efficiently use scarce resources and support extended mission durations. Thus, an investigation is conducted to develop a general framework, that facilitates propellant-free Earth-Moon transfers by exploiting sail dynamics in combination with advantageous transfer options offered in the Earth-Moon circular restricted multi-body dynamical model. Both periodic orbits in the …

Financial Literacy: An Essential Component Of Mathematics Literacy And Numeracy, Marla A. Sole Oct 2014

Financial Literacy: An Essential Component Of Mathematics Literacy And Numeracy, Marla A. Sole

Publications and Research

With rising personal and public debt, public and private employers increasingly shifting financial responsibility to individuals, and an increase in both the number of financial investment options and predatory lending practices, today’s students need to be financially literate. This paper defines financial literacy and justifies its place in the mathematics curriculum. After describing the gaps in young people’s understanding of financial literacy, which is more pronounced among women and minorities, this paper provides examples of financial literacy exercises. College students’ solutions demonstrated that the level of financial literacy is low. The majority of students were unfamiliar with financial principles and …
