Design And Analysis Of Robotically-Controlled Minimally Invasive Surgical Instruments, Jordan D. Tanner Nov 2014

Design And Analysis Of Robotically-Controlled Minimally Invasive Surgical Instruments, Jordan D. Tanner

Theses and Dissertations

Robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery is used to perform intricate surgical tasks through small incisions using long, slender instruments. The miniaturization of these instruments is advantageous to both surgeon and patient because smaller instruments reduce trauma to surrounding tissue, decrease patient recovery times, and can be used in confined spaces otherwise inaccessible using larger instruments. However, miniaturization of existing designs is limited by friction between moving parts, the volume occupied by the end effector, and manufacturing and assembly constraints. The objective of this work is to develop and analyze concepts that can be used in robot-assisted needlescopic surgery. The concepts are …

The Multiple Intelligences As Holistic Spiritual Formation In Youth Ministry, Grant E. Carey Nov 2014

The Multiple Intelligences As Holistic Spiritual Formation In Youth Ministry, Grant E. Carey

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation claims that there is a great need for holistic spiritual formation in the lives of the adolescents that are part of our churches. Section 1 describes the influence of postmodernism and Moralistic Therapeutic Deism on our teenagers, especially as they go through an intense time of change and development. Because of this awkward developmental stage, adolescents are often thought of in ways that are mostly untrue, which creates myths that are explored and debunked in this section. Section 2 explores recent trends and programs in youth ministry that have been used for bettering spiritual formation in the lives …

The Lp Relaxation Orthogonal Array Polytope And Its Permutation Symmetries, Andrew J. Geyer, Dursun A. Bulutoglu, Steven J. Rosenberg Nov 2014

The Lp Relaxation Orthogonal Array Polytope And Its Permutation Symmetries, Andrew J. Geyer, Dursun A. Bulutoglu, Steven J. Rosenberg

Faculty Publications

Symmetry plays a fundamental role in design of experiments. In particular, symmetries of factorial designs that preserve their statistical properties are exploited to find designs with the best statistical properties. By using a result proved by Rosenberg [6], the concept of the LP relaxation orthogonal array polytope is developed and studied. A complete characterization of the permutation symmetry group of this polytope is made. Also, this characterization is verified computationally for many cases. Finally, a proof is provided.

Systems Theory And The Metaphysics Of Composition, Martin Zwick Nov 2014

Systems Theory And The Metaphysics Of Composition, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ideas from systems theory - recursive unity and emergent attributes - are applied to the metaphysical and meta-metaphysical debates about the ontological status of composites. These ideas suggest the rejection of both extremes of universalism and nihilism, favoring instead the intermediate position that some composites exist in a nontrivial sense - those having unity and emergent novelty - while others do not. Systems theory is egalitarian: it posits that what exist are systems, equal in their ontological status. Some systems are fundamental, but what exists is not merely the fundamental, and the fundamental is not merely the foundational. The status …

Direct Numerical Simulations Of Non-Premixed Ethylene–Air Flames: Local Flame Extinction Criterion, Vivien R. Lecoustre, Paul G. Grias, Somesh P. Roy, Zhaoyu Luo, Dan C. Haworth, Hong G. Im, Tianfeng F. Lui, Arnaud Trouvé

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of ethylene/air diffusion flame extinctions in decaying two-dimensional turbulence were performed. A Damköhler-number-based flame extinction criterion as provided by classical large activation energy asymptotic (AEA) theory is assessed for its validity in predicting flame extinction and compared to one based on Chemical Explosive Mode Analysis (CEMA) of the detailed chemistry. The DNS code solves compressible flow conservation equations using high order finite difference and explicit time integration schemes. The ethylene/air chemistry is simulated with a reduced mechanism that is generated based on the directed relation graph (DRG) based methods along with stiffness removal. The numerical configuration …

Buglocalizer: Integrated Tool Support For Bug Localization, Ferdian Thung, Tien-Duy B. Le, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, David Lo Nov 2014

Buglocalizer: Integrated Tool Support For Bug Localization, Ferdian Thung, Tien-Duy B. Le, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To manage bugs that appear in a software, developers often make use of a bug tracking system such as Bugzilla. Users can report bugs that they encounter in such a system. Whenever a user reports a new bug report, developers need to read the summary and description of the bug report and manually locate the buggy files based on this information. This manual process is often time consuming and tedious. Thus, a number of past studies have proposed bug localization techniques to automatically recover potentially buggy files from bug reports. Unfortunately, none of these techniques are integrated to bug tracking …

K-Sketch: Digital Storytelling With Animation Sketches, Richard Christopher Davis, Nur Camellia Binte Zakaria

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

K-Sketch gives novice animators an easy way to tell stories with animation sketches. It relies on users’ intuitive sense of space and time, and makes animation easy through the use of sketching and demonstration. Our studies have shown that people take naturally to telling stories with K-Sketch, and it is particularly helpful for exploring the timing of events. We also found that K-Sketch is a good collaborative medium for telling stories. In this demonstration we will show how K-Sketch works and explain how these advantages are realized in practice.

Modloc: Localizing Multiple Objects In Dynamic Indoor Environment, Xiaonan Guo, Dian Zhang, Kaishun Wu, Lionel M. Ni

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Radio frequency (RF) based technologies play an important role in indoor localization, since Radio Signal Strength (RSS) can be easily measured by various wireless devices without additional cost. Among these, radio map based technologies (also referred as fingerprinting technologies) are attractive due to high accuracy and easy deployment. However, these technologies have not been extensively applied on real environment for two fatal limitations. First, it is hard to localize multiple objects. When the number of target objects is unknown, constructing a radio map of multiple objects is almost impossible. Second, environment changes will generate different multipath signals and severely disturb …

An Ecological Model For Digital Platforms Maintenance And Evolution, Paolo Rocchi, Paolo Spagnoletti, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The maintenance of software products has been studied extensively in both software engineering and management information systems. Such studies are mainly focused on the activities that take place prior to starting the maintenance phase. Their contribution is either related to the improvement of software quality or to validating contingency models for reducing maintenance efforts. The continuous maintenance philosophy suggests to shift the attention within the maintenance phase for better coping with the evolutionary trajectories of digital platforms. In this paper, we examine the maintenance process of a digital platform from the perspective of the software vendor. Based on our empirical …

An Ethnography Of Voice(S) In The School House: Making Sense Of Girl World, Julie Devaud Nov 2014

An Ethnography Of Voice(S) In The School House: Making Sense Of Girl World, Julie Devaud

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The life of a gifted adolescent girl both in and out of the schoolhouse is dynamic and complicated. This qualitative study, using the methodology of narrative inquiry and multiple interviews, examines how these young women make sense of their lives as they move quickly towards the socialization of womanhood. This study specifically examines which factors lead to their academic success in the schoolhouse and personal success as happy individuals. Using grounded theory and a critical feminist perspective as my framework for analysis, I found the support of family, teachers, and peers was critical. I also discerned four distinct themes among …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The restoration of stream corridors is becoming an increasingly important component of urban landscape planning, and the high cost of these projects necessitates the need to understand and address potential ecological obstacles to project success. The nutria (Myocastor coypus) is an invasive, semi-aquatic rodent native to South America that causes detrimental ecological impacts in riparian and wetland habitats throughout its introduced range, and techniques are needed to reduce nutria herbivory damage to urban stream restoration projects. We assessed the efficacy of standard Vexar® plastic mesh tubes in reducing nutria herbivory damage to newly established woody plants. The study was conducted …

Protein Recycling In Bering Sea Algal Incubations, Eli K. Moore, H. Rodger Harvey, Jessica F. Faux, David R. Goodlett, Brook L. Nunn Nov 2014

Protein Recycling In Bering Sea Algal Incubations, Eli K. Moore, H. Rodger Harvey, Jessica F. Faux, David R. Goodlett, Brook L. Nunn

OES Faculty Publications

Protein present in phytoplankton represents a large fraction of the organic nitrogen and carbon transported from its synthesis in surface waters to marine sediments. Yet relatively little is known about the longevity of identifiable protein in situ, or the potential modifications to proteins that occur during bloom termination, protein recycling and degradation. To address this knowledge gap, diatom-dominated phytoplankton was collected during the Bering Sea spring blooms of 2009 and 2010, and incubated under darkness in separate shipboard degradation experiments spanning 11 and 53 d, respectively. In each experiment, the protein distribution was monited over time using shotgun proteomics, …

Fault-Resilient Lightweight Cryptographic Block Ciphers For Secure Embedded Systems, Kai Tian Nov 2014

Fault-Resilient Lightweight Cryptographic Block Ciphers For Secure Embedded Systems, Kai Tian

Theses

The development of extremely-constrained environments having sensitive nodes such as RFID tags and nano-sensors necessitates the use of lightweight block ciphers. Indeed, lightweight block ciphers are essential for providing low-cost confidentiality to such applications. Nevertheless, providing the required security properties does not guarantee their reliability and hardware assurance when the architectures are prone to natural and malicious faults. In this thesis, considering false-alarm resistivity, error detection schemes for the lightweight block ciphers are proposed with the case study of XTEA (eXtended TEA). We note that lightweight block ciphers might be better suited for low-resource environments compared to the Advanced Encryption …

Weak Measurement And Bohmian Conditional Wave Functions, Travis Norsen Nov 2014

Weak Measurement And Bohmian Conditional Wave Functions, Travis Norsen

Physics: Faculty Publications

It was recently pointed out (and demonstrated experimentally) by Lundeen et al. that the wave function of a particle (more precisely, the wave function possessed by each member of an ensemble of identically-prepared particles) can be "directly measured" using weak measurement. Here it is shown that if this same technique is applied, with appropriate post-selection, to one particle from a (perhaps entangled) multi-particle system, the result is precisely the so-called "conditional wave function" of Bohmian mechanics. Thus, a plausibly operationalist method for defining the wave function of a quantum mechanical sub-system corresponds to the natural definition of a sub-system wave …

Analyzing The Interactions Between Xenopus Tropicalis Mc2r, Mc5r, And The Mraps: Modeling The Regulation Of Frog Interrenal Cells, Yesenia Garcia Nov 2014

Analyzing The Interactions Between Xenopus Tropicalis Mc2r, Mc5r, And The Mraps: Modeling The Regulation Of Frog Interrenal Cells, Yesenia Garcia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of Melanocortin 2 Receptor (MC2R) in adrenal/interrenal glucocorticoid secretion has been well documented in many organisms. Studies in mammals have shown that in the adrenal gland two melanocortin receptors and two melanocortin receptor accessory proteins are expressed: MC2R, MC5R, MRAP, and MRAP2. The MRAPs have an opposite effect on the cell surface expression of MC2R and MC5R. In mammals, MRAP aids MC2R but inhibits MC5R cell surface expression. This thesis aims to explore the functional relationship between MC2R, MC5R, MRAP, and MRAP2 in Xenopus tropicalis to determine if the MRAPs have a similar effect on amphibian MC2R and …

Rapid: A Toolkit For Reliability Analysis Of Non-Deterministic Systems, Lin Gui, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jin Song Dong Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Non-determinism in concurrent or distributed software systems (i.e., various possible execution orders among different distributed components) presents new challenges to the existing reliability analysis methods based on Markov chains. In this work, we present a toolkit RaPiD for the reliability analysis of non-deterministic systems. Taking Markov decision process as reliability model, RaPiD can help in the analysis of three fundamental and rewarding aspects regarding software reliability. First, to have reliability assurance on a system, RaPiD can synthesize the overall system reliability given the reliability values of system components. Second, given a requirement on the overall system reliability, RaPiD can distribute …

Band Selection For Hyperspectral Images Using Probabilistic Memetic Algorithm, Liang Feng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Meng-Hiot Lim, Si Wei Jiang Nov 2014

Band Selection For Hyperspectral Images Using Probabilistic Memetic Algorithm, Liang Feng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Meng-Hiot Lim, Si Wei Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Band selection plays an important role in identifying the most useful and valuable information contained in the hyperspectral images for further data analysis such as classification, clustering, etc. Memetic algorithm (MA), among other metaheuristic search methods, has been shown to achieve competitive performances in solving the NP-hard band selection problem. In this paper, we propose a formal probabilistic memetic algorithm for band selection, which is able to adaptively control the degree of global exploration against local exploitation as the search progresses. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed probabilistic mechanism, empirical studies conducted on five well-known hyperspectral images against two …

Online Transfer Learning, Peilin Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Jialei Wang, Bin Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper investigates a new machine learning framework of Online Transfer Learning (OTL), which aims to attack an online learning task on a target domain by transferring knowledge from some source domain. We do not assume data in the target domain follows the same distribution as that in the source domain, and the motivation of our work is to enhance a supervised online learning task on a target domain by exploiting the existing knowledge that had been learnt from training data in source domains. OTL is in general a challenging problem since data in both source and target domains not …

Deep Learning For Content-Based Image Retrieval: A Comprehensive Study, Ji Wan, Dayong Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Pengcheng Wu, Jianke Zhu, Yongdong Zhang, Jintao Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning effective feature representations and similarity measures are crucial to the retrieval performance of a content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system. Despite extensive research efforts for decades, it remains one of the most challenging open problems that considerably hinders the successes of real-world CBIR systems. The key challenge has been attributed to the well-known "semantic gap" issue that exists between low-level image pixels captured by machines and high-level semantic concepts perceived by human. Among various techniques, machine learning has been actively investigated as a possible direction to bridge the semantic gap in the long term. Inspired by recent successes of deep …
