Historical Traffic-Tolerant Paths In Road Networks, Pui Hang Li, Man Lung Yiu, Kyriakos Mouratidis Nov 2014

Historical Traffic-Tolerant Paths In Road Networks, Pui Hang Li, Man Lung Yiu, Kyriakos Mouratidis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Historical traffic information is valuable for transportation analysis and planning, as well as for route search services. In view of these applications, we propose the k traffic-tolerant paths problem (TTP) on road networks, which takes a source-destination pair and historical traffic information as input, and returns k paths that minimize the aggregate (historical) travel time. Unlike the shortest path problem, the TTP problem has a combinatorial search space that renders the optimal solution expensive to compute. We propose an exact algorithm and a heuristic algorithm for this problem. Experiments on real traffic data demonstrate the effectiveness of TTP paths and …

Dynamic Clustering Of Contextual Multi-Armed Bandits, Trong T. Nguyen, Hady W. Lauw Nov 2014

Dynamic Clustering Of Contextual Multi-Armed Bandits, Trong T. Nguyen, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the prevalence of the Web and social media, users increasingly express their preferences online. In learning these preferences, recommender systems need to balance the trade-off between exploitation, by providing users with more of the "same", and exploration, by providing users with something "new" so as to expand the systems' knowledge. Multi-armed bandit (MAB) is a framework to balance this trade-off. Most of the previous work in MAB either models a single bandit for the whole population, or one bandit for each user. We propose an algorithm to divide the population of users into multiple clusters, and to customize the …

Player Acceptance Of Human Computation Games: An Aesthetic Perspective, Xiaohui Wang, Dion Hoe Lian Goh, Ee Peng Lim, Adrian Wei Liang Vu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Human computation games (HCGs) are applications that use games to harness human intelligence to perform computations that cannot be effectively done by software systems alone. Despite their increasing popularity, insufficient research has been conducted to examine the predictors of player acceptance for HCGs. In particular, prior work underlined the important role of game enjoyment in predicting acceptance of entertainment technology without specifying its driving factors. This study views game enjoyment through a taxonomy of aesthetic experiences and examines the effect of aesthetic experience, usability and information quality on player acceptance of HCGs. Results showed that aesthetic experience and usability were …

On Joint Modeling Of Topical Communities And Personal Interest In Microblogs, Tuan-Anh Hoang, Ee Peng Lim Nov 2014

On Joint Modeling Of Topical Communities And Personal Interest In Microblogs, Tuan-Anh Hoang, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose the Topical Communities and Personal Interest (TCPI) model for simultaneously modeling topics, topical communities, and users’ topical interests in microblogging data. TCPI considers different topical communities while differentiating users’ personal topical interests from those of topical communities, and learning the dependence of each user on the affiliated communities to generate content. This makes TCPI different from existing models that either do not consider the existence of multiple topical communities, or do not differentiate between personal and community’s topical interests. Our experiments on two Twitter datasets show that TCPI can effectively mine the representative topics for …

Online Passive Aggressive Active Learning And Its Applications, Jing Lu, Peilin Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi Nov 2014

Online Passive Aggressive Active Learning And Its Applications, Jing Lu, Peilin Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We investigate online active learning techniques for classification tasks in data stream mining applications. Unlike traditional learning approaches (either batch or online learning) that often require to request the class label of each incoming instance, online active learning queries only a subset of informative incoming instances to update the classification model, which aims to maximize classification performance using minimal human labeling effort during the entire online stream data mining task. In this paper, we present a new family of algorithms for online active learning called Passive-Aggressive Active (PAA) learning algorithms by adapting the popular Passive-Aggressive algorithms in an online active …

Vector Abstraction And Concretization For Scalable Detection Of Refactorings, Narcisa Andreea Milea, Lingxiao Jiang, Siau-Cheng Khoo Nov 2014

Vector Abstraction And Concretization For Scalable Detection Of Refactorings, Narcisa Andreea Milea, Lingxiao Jiang, Siau-Cheng Khoo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automated techniques have been proposed to either identify refactoring opportunities (i.e., code fragments that can be but have not yet been restructured in a program), or reconstruct historical refactorings (i.e., code restructuring operations that have happened between different versions of a program). In this paper, we propose a new technique that can detect both refactoring opportunities and historical refactorings in large code bases. The key of our technique is the design of vector abstraction and concretization operations that can encode code changes induced by certain refactorings as characteristic vectors. Thus, the problem of identifying refactorings can be reduced to the …

Australian Curriculum Reform Ii: Health And Physical Education, T Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

It is implied by governing organizations that Australia is presently experiencing its first national curriculum reform, when as the title suggests it is the second. However, until now Australian states and territories have been responsible for the education curriculum delivered within schools. The present national curriculum reform promises one curriculum framework for health and physical education (HPE), currently under review. This paper explores the history of Australian curriculum reform in the HPE key learning area, revealing that the present review offers an opportunity to focus on the vital ‘implementation’ stage which seems to be continually overlooked.

A Game-Theoretic Analysis Of The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Peter Revesz Nov 2014

A Game-Theoretic Analysis Of The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Peter Revesz

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Although nuclear non-proliferation is an almost universal human desire, in practice, the negotiated treaties appear unable to prevent the steady growth of the number of states that have nuclear weapons. We propose a computational model for understanding the complex issues behind nuclear arms negotiations, the motivations of various states to enter a nuclear weapons program and the ways to diffuse crisis situations.

Background: We report the discovery of a nematode parasite egg (Nemata: Oxyurida) from a coprolite closely associated with the remains of several species of Cynodontia, dated to 240 million years old. This finding is particularly significant because this is the oldest record of an oxyurid nematode yet discovered, and because the cynodonts are considered a stem-group of the mammals.

Methods: We extracted material from a fully mineralized coprolite by both scraping the surface, and removing fragments from its interior with clean dental instruments used a single time. A single drop of glycerol from a new vial was added as a …

Gaze Stabilization For Humanoid Robots: A Comprehensive Framework, A Roncone, U Pattacini, G Metta, L Natale

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Gaze stabilization is an important requisite for humanoid robots. Previous work on this topic has focused on the integration of inertial and visual information. Little attention has been given to a third component, which is the knowledge that the robot has about its own movement. In this work we propose a comprehensive framework for gaze stabilization in a humanoid robot. We focus on the problem of compensating for disturbances induced in the cameras due to self-generated movements of the robot. In this work we employ two separate signals for stabilization: (1) an anticipatory term obtained from the velocity commands sent …

We present a hybrid nano-lithographic approach to minimizes the effects of line edge roughness and shot noise in nano-hole patterning by reflowing photoresist polymers around the nanoparticles deposited using self-assembly and simple etch chemistries. The method extends the transistor contact holes patterning limits to below 20 nm.

A Coherent Method For The Detection And Parameter Estimation Of Continuous Gravitational Wave Signals Using A Pulsar Timing Array, Yan Wang, Soumya D. Mohanty, F. A. Jenet Nov 2014

A Coherent Method For The Detection And Parameter Estimation Of Continuous Gravitational Wave Signals Using A Pulsar Timing Array, Yan Wang, Soumya D. Mohanty, F. A. Jenet

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The use of a high precision pulsar timing array is a promising approach to detecting gravitational waves in the very low frequency regime (10-6-10-9 Hz) that is complementary to ground-based efforts (e.g., LIGO, Virgo) at high frequencies (∼10-103 Hz) and space-based ones (e.g., LISA) at low frequencies (10-4-10-1 Hz). One of the target sources for pulsar timing arrays is individual supermassive black hole binaries which are expected to form in galactic mergers. In this paper, a likelihood-based method for detection and parameter estimation is presented for a monochromatic continuous gravitational wave signal emitted by such a source. The so-called pulsar …

Amulet: A Secure Architecture For Mhealth Applications For Low-Power Wearable Devices, Andrés Molina-Markham, Ronald Peterson, Joseph Skinner, Tianlong Yun, Bhargav Golla, Kevin Freeman, Travis Peters, Jacob Sorber, Ryan Halter, David Kotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Interest in using mobile technologies for health-related applications (mHealth) has increased. However, none of the available mobile platforms provide the essential properties that are needed by these applications. An mHealth platform must be (i) secure; (ii) provide high availability; and (iii) allow for the deployment of multiple third-party mHealth applications that share access to an individual's devices and data. Smartphones may not be able to provide property (ii) because there are activities and situations in which an individual may not be able to carry them (e.g., while in a contact sport). A low-power wearable device can provide higher availability, remaining …

Fuel is a major cost item for civil transport airplanes. Minimizing fuel consumption of these crafts is a stream of economic opportunity and a stage for innovation, competition and exploration. Regardless of the fuel type, bio or crude oil based, the civil transport stakeholders would like to minimize fuel consumption of their airplanes. The mixing of fuel and air is a critical process for optimum combustion in gas turbine engines due to its high influence on the downstream combustion process. The need for minimizing fuel consumption coupled with the requirement for combustion systems to perform well at all flight conditions …

Incoherent Scatter Radar Observations Of Dynamic Ion Composition Changes At High Latitudes During Geomagnetic Storms, Bryan C. Wright Nov 2014

Incoherent Scatter Radar Observations Of Dynamic Ion Composition Changes At High Latitudes During Geomagnetic Storms, Bryan C. Wright

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Two new methods are developed for estimating F region ion composition from field-aligned incoherent scatter radar (ISR) measurements. These methods address incoherent scatter spectra temperature-mass ambiguities by self-consistently modeling ion temperature profiles as a function of electric fields and plasma interactions with the neutral atmosphere. These two new methods improve on previous, similar work developed in Zettergren et al. [2010,2011] by incorporating more accurate physical models and improving the estimation procedures. These techniques enable studies of ionospheric composition during highly disturbed conditions and are suitable for data collected with short integration times (2-10 minutes). The improved models incorporate the effects …
