Comparison Of Estimators In Glm With Binary Data, D. M. Sakate, D. N. Kashid
Comparison Of Estimators In Glm With Binary Data, D. M. Sakate, D. N. Kashid
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) of regression parameters in the generalized linear models (GLM) are biased and their bias is non negligible when sample size is small. This study focuses on the GLM with binary data with multiple observations on response for each predictor value when sample size is small. The performance of the estimation methods in Cordeiro and McCullagh (1991), Firth (1993) and Pardo et al. (2005) are compared for GLM with binary data using an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study. Performance of these methods for three real data sets is also compared.
Life Testing Analysis Of Failure Censored Generalized Exponentiated Data, Anwar Hassan, Mehraj Ahmad
Life Testing Analysis Of Failure Censored Generalized Exponentiated Data, Anwar Hassan, Mehraj Ahmad
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A generalized exponential distribution is considered for analyzing lifetime data; such statistical models are applicable when the observations are available in an ordered manner. This study examines failure censored data, which consist of testing n items and terminating the experiment when a pre-assigned number of items, for example r ( < n), have failed. Due to scale and shape parameters, both have flexibility for analyzing different types of lifetime data. This distribution has increasing, decreasing and a constant hazard rate depending on the shape parameter. This study provides maximum likelihood estimation and uniformly minimum variance unbiased techniques for the estimation of reliability of a component. Numerical computation was conducted on a data set and a comparison of the performance of two different techniques is presented.
Ridge Regression And Ill-Conditioning, Ghadban Khalaf, Mohamed Iguernane
Ridge Regression And Ill-Conditioning, Ghadban Khalaf, Mohamed Iguernane
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Hoerl and Kennard (1970) suggested the ridge regression estimator as an alternative to the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimator in the presence of multicollinearity. This article proposes new methods for estimating the ridge parameter in case of ordinary ridge regression. A simulation study evaluates the performance of the proposed estimators based on the Mean Squared Error (MSE) criterion and indicates that, under certain conditions, the proposed estimators perform well compared to the OLS estimator and another well-known estimator reviewed.
Estimation Of Multi Component Systems Reliability In Stress-Strength Models, Adil H. Khan, T R. Jan
Estimation Of Multi Component Systems Reliability In Stress-Strength Models, Adil H. Khan, T R. Jan
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
In a system with standby redundancy, there are a number of components only one of which works at a time and the other remain as standbys. When an impact of stress exceeds the strength of the active component, for the first time, it fails and another from standbys, if there is any, is activated and faces the impact of stresses, not necessarily identical as faced by the preceding component and the system fails when all the components have failed. Sriwastav and Kakaty (1981) assumed that the components stress-strengths are similarly distributed. However, in general the stress distributions will …
Estimation Of Gumbel Parameters Under Ranked Set Sampling, Omar M. Yousef, Sameer A. Al-Subh
Estimation Of Gumbel Parameters Under Ranked Set Sampling, Omar M. Yousef, Sameer A. Al-Subh
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Consider the MLEs (maximum likelihood estimators) of the parameters of the Gumbel distribution using SRS (simple random sample) and RSS (ranked set sample) and the MOMEs (method of moment estimators) and REGs (regression estimators) based on SRS. A comparison between these estimators using bias and MSE (mean square error) was performed using simulation. It appears that the MLE based on RSS can be a robust competitor to the MLE based on SRS.

Estimates And Forecasts Of Garch Model Under Misspecified Probability Distributions: A Monte Carlo Simulation Approach, Olaoluwa S. Yaya, Olusanya E. Olubusoye, Oluwadare O. Ojo
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The effect of misspecification of correct sampling probability distribution of Generalized Autoregressive Conditionally Heteroscedastic (GARCH) processes is considered. The three assumed distributions are the normal, Student t, and generalized error distributions. The GARCH process is sampled using one of the distributions and the model is estimated based on the three distributions in each sample. Parameter estimates and forecast performance are used to judge the estimated model for performance. The AR-GARCH-GED performed better on the three assumed distributions; even, when Student t distribution is assumed, AR-GARCH-Student t does not perform as the best model.

Double Bootstrap Confidence Interval Estimates With Censored And Truncated Data, Jayanthi Arasan, Mohd B. Adam
Double Bootstrap Confidence Interval Estimates With Censored And Truncated Data, Jayanthi Arasan, Mohd B. Adam
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Traditional inferential procedures often fail with censored and truncated data, especially when sample sizes are small. In this paper we evaluate the performances of the double and single bootstrap interval estimates by comparing the double percentile (DB-p), double percentile-t (DB-t), single percentile (B-p), and percentile-t (B-t) bootstrap interval estimation methods via a coverage probability study when the data is censored using the log logistic model. We then apply the double bootstrap intervals to real right censored lifetime data on 32 women with breast cancer and failure data on 98 brake pads where all the observations were left truncated.
Žižek’S Hegel: Less Than Nothing: Hegel And The Shadow Of Dialectical Materialism, Gavin Hyman
Žižek’S Hegel: Less Than Nothing: Hegel And The Shadow Of Dialectical Materialism, Gavin Hyman
International Dialogue
Followers of Slavoj Žižek’s work had long been awaiting his “big book on Hegel.” In interviews and other appearances, he made no secret of the fact that this work was in progress and, furthermore, that he considered it to be a labour of love, his magnum opus, and, in a sense, a culmination. Big the book certainly is—1010 pages of text to be precise. If such a book were to be written by any other author, readers would doubtless have waited considerably longer to receive it. But so prolific is this author that the waiting has been minimal, and many …
Small Carbon Chains In Circumstellar Envelopes, R. J. Hargreaves, K. Hinkle, P. F. Bernath
Small Carbon Chains In Circumstellar Envelopes, R. J. Hargreaves, K. Hinkle, P. F. Bernath
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Observations of carbon-rich circumstellar envelopes were made using the Phoenix spectrograph on the Gemini South telescope to determine the abundance of small carbon chain molecules. Vibration-rotation lines of the ν3 antisymmetric stretch of C3 near 2040 cm-1 (4.902 μm) have been used to determine the column density for four carbon-rich circumstellar envelopes: CRL 865, CRL 1922, CRL 2023 and IRC +10216. We additionally calculate the column density of C5 for IRC +10216, and provide an upper limit for five more objects. An upper limit estimate for the C7 column density is also provided for IRC+10216. The problem of characterizing a distribution is an important problem which has recently attracted the attention of many researchers. Thus, various characterizations have been established in many different directions. An investigator will be vitally interested to know if their model fits the requirements of a particular distribution. To this end, one will depend on the characterizations of this distribution which provide conditions under which the underlying distribution is indeed that particular distribution. In this work, several characterizations of Malinowska and Szynal (2008) for certain general classes of distributions are revisited and simpler proofs of them are presented. These characterizations are …

Nontask functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become one of the most popular noninvasive areas of brain mapping research for neuroscientists. In nontask fMRI, various sources of “noise” corrupt the measured blood oxygenation level-dependent signal. Many studies have aimed to attenuate the noise in reconstructed voxel measurements through spatial and temporal processing operations. While these solutions make the data more “appealing,” many commonly used processing operations induce artificial correlations in the acquired data. As such, it becomes increasingly more difficult to derive the true underlying covariance structure once the data have been processed. As the goal of nontask fMRI studies …

Interviews can be a powerful chemistry education research tool. Different from an assessment score or Likert-scale survey number, interviews can provide the researcher with a way to examine and describe what we cannot see, aspects such as feelings, thoughts, or explanations of thinking or behavior. Most people have no doubt seen countless interviews on TV news and talk shows. These sessions might convey interviewing as a spontaneous, easy, and straightforward process. However, using interviews as a meaningful research tool requires considerable thought, preparation, and practice. This chapter provides a general introduction to the use of interviews as a tool within …

An experiment to measure single-spin asymmetries of semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized 3He target was performed at Jefferson Laboratory in the kinematic region of 0.16<x<0.35 and 1.42<2.7 GeV2 Pretzelosity asymmetries on 3He, which are expressed as the convolution of the h⊥1T transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions and the Collins fragmentation functions in the leading order, were measured for the first time. Under the effective polarization approximation, we extracted the corresponding neutron asymmetries from the measured 3He asymmetries and cross-section ratios between the proton and 3He. Our results show that both …2.7>0.35>

The actin cytoskeleton and its network of associated proteins constitute a physical barrier that viruses must circumvent to gain entry into cells for productive infection. The mechanisms by which the physical signals of infection are sensed by the host to activate an innate immune response are not well understood. The antiviral endoribonuclease RNase L is ubiquitously expressed in a latent form and activated upon binding 2-5A, a unique oligoadenylate produced during viral infections. We provide evidence that RNase L in its inactive form interacts with the actin-binding protein Filamin A to modulate the actin cytoskeleton and inhibit virus entry. Cells …

Abdi et al (2014 Environ. Res. Lett. 9 094003), have adapted the concept of comparing supply and demand of annual plant production known as human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) to a region of the Sahel with rapid population growth. They found that HANPP more than doubled over the study period of 2000–2010, from 19% to 41%, suggesting increasing vulnerability of these populations to food insecurity.

Galactic open and globular clusters (OCs, GCs) appear to inhabit separate regions of the age-mass plane. However, the transition between them is not easily defined because there is some overlap between high-mass, old OCs and low-mass, young GCs. We are exploring the possibility of a clear-cut separation between OCs and GCs using an abundance feature that has been found so far only in GCs: (anti)correlations between light elements. Among the coupled abundance trends, the Na-O anticorrelation is the most widely studied. These anticorrelations are the signature of self-enrichment, i.e., of a formation mechanism that implies multiple generations of stars. Here …

Close On The Wind: An Environmental Military History Examining Wind’S Influence On The Early United States Navy, Scott J. Beehler
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Utilizing General Carl von Clausewitz’s theory of friction in combat, Close on the Wind examines wind’s historical influence on early United States naval warfare, specifically small scale engagements fought during the Quasi War, First Barbary War, and the War of 1812. To accomplish this, the thesis first engages in a scientific discussion of wind, concentrating on how it occurs and what forces dictate its velocity and direction. The examination goes on to also present the types of wind that period sailing vessels encountered, including global, regional, and local patterns, as well as how wind influenced the practice of sailing and …

The glmS riboswitch undergoes self-cleavage upon binding its metabolic product GlcN6P, thereby providing a negative feedback mechanism limiting translation of the glmS protein when GlcN6P is abundant. As a first step toward the development of novel antimicrobials, we have synthesized a series of GlcN6P analogues bearing phosphatase-inert surrogates in place of the natural phosphate ester functionality. The self-cleavage assay identified two such compounds that display significant riboswitch actuator activity; namely those bearing a 6-phosphonomethyl group or a 6-O-malonyl ether. These two analogues exhibit a 22-fold and a 27-fold higher catalytic efficiency, respectively, than does glucosamine. Docking experiments were …
What Is Criminal Restitution?, Cortney E. Lollar
What Is Criminal Restitution?, Cortney E. Lollar
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
A new form of restitution has become a core aspect of criminal punishment. Courts now order defendants to compensate victims for an increasingly broad category of losses, including emotional and psychological losses and losses for which the defendant was not found guilty. Criminal restitution therefore moves far beyond its traditional purpose of disgorging a defendant's ill-gotten gains. Instead, restitution has become a mechanism of imposing additional punishment. Courts, however, have failed to recognize the punitive nature of restitution and thus enter restitution orders without regard to the constitutional protections that normally attach to criminal proceedings. This Article deploys a novel …

Research on humor in organizations has rarely considered the social context in which humor occurs. One such social setting that most of us experience on a daily basis concerns the team context. Building on recent theorizing about the humor—performance association in teams, this study seeks to increase our understanding of the function and effects of humor in team interaction settings. Specifically, we examine behavioral patterns of humor and laughter in real teams. We videotaped and coded humor and laughter during 54 regular organizational team meetings. Performance ratings were obtained immediately following the team meetings as well as at a later …
The Icon Horn Loudspeaker, Vincent Phan
The Icon Horn Loudspeaker, Vincent Phan
Mechanical Engineering
A horn loudspeaker in layperson terms is essentially taking a megaphone and integrating it into a standard speaker. Similar to a cheerleader yelling into a megaphone, the horn loudspeaker will amplify the sound from the speaker with no additional power needed. Using standard speaker horn theory, the geometry of the “megaphone” can be engineered to tune the acoustic performance tailored to loudness and/or specific acoustics frequencies. The horn contours are similar to traditional orchestra instruments such as the French horn, trumpet, and tuba. The iconic beauty of a horn married with the quantitative engineering theory creates an aesthetic yet functional …

In this work we describe a model-independent method of developing a plot of scale factor a(t) versus lookback time tL from the usual Hubble diagram of modulus data against redshift. This is the first plot of this type. We follow the model-independent methodology of Daly & Djorgovski used for their radio-galaxy data. Once the a(t)data plot is completed, any model can be applied and will display as described in the standard literature. We then compile an extensive data set to z = 1.8 by combining Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) data from SNLS3 …

Compliant Mechanisms For Deployable Space Systems, Shannon Alisa Zirbel
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to develop fundamentals of compliant mechanisms in deployable space systems. The scope was limited to creating methods for thick origami, developing compliant deployable solar arrays, and developing methods for stowing and deploying the arrays. The research on actuation methods was focused on a one-time deployment of the array. Concepts for both passive and active actuation were considered. The primary objective of this work was to develop approaches to accommodate thickness in origami-based deployable arrays with a high ratio of deployed-to-stowed diameter. The HanaFlex design was derived from the origami flasher model and is developed …
