Gas Detection Applications Of Vertically Aligned Metal Oxide Nanowire Arrays, Haiqiao Su Dec 2014

Gas Detection Applications Of Vertically Aligned Metal Oxide Nanowire Arrays, Haiqiao Su

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

To build novel electronic noses for mimicking biological olfactory systems that consist of olfactory receptor arrays with large surface area and massively-diversified chemical reactivity, three dimensional (3D) vertical aligned ZnO nanowire arrays were employed as active materials for gas detection. ZnO nanowire arrays share 3D structures similar to mammalian olfactory receptor arrays, with thousands of vertical nanowires providing a high reception area which can significantly enhance the sensors’ sensitivity. Meanwhile, with different material decorations (such as SnO2, In2O3, WO3 and polymers), each array of nanowires can produce a distinguishable response for each separate …

Studies Directed Toward The Synthesis Of Amphibian Alkaloids Via Iridium Catalyzed N-Heterocyclization Reactions, Kiran Kumar Thota

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The pyrrolidine and piperidine ring systems are present in a variety of different classes of amphibian alkaloids. We have found the iridium catalyzed N-heterocylization reaction of diols with amines to be very useful for the construction of novel pyrrolidine, piperidine and piperazine derivatives. The scope and utility of the iridium catalyzed N-heterocyclization reaction for the construction of novel anuran scaffolds using amino diols and triols are presented. Studies directed towards the total synthesis of 4,6-disubstituted quinolizidine and (±)-epiquinamide are discussed.

The second study is focused on the selective conversion of terminal dienes to primary diols. This conversion has always had …

Coastal Land Loss And Collaborative Resource Governance: The Case Of Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, Nandini Seth Dec 2014

Coastal Land Loss And Collaborative Resource Governance: The Case Of Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, Nandini Seth

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The research, presented here, is about the collaborative governance and adaptive management in coastal planning efforts of Louisiana. Fundamental conflict, between the idea of environmental conservation and developmental growth, has always existed in the coastal regions. The presence of the large number of environmental laws, at various levels of government and their different management objectives for utilization of coastal resources, requires study of intergovernmental relationship. Taking Plaquemines Parish as a case in point, this thesis will, therefore, review the critical restoration plans for intergovernmental coordination and conflicts. It will also provide recommendations, for elected representatives and policy makers, with an …

Master's Projects

We have gathered over 3100 annual financial reports for 500 companies listed on the S&P 500 index, where the main goal was to select and give proper weights to the various pieces of quantitative data to maximize clustering results and improve prediction results over previous work by [Lin et al. 2011]. Various financial ratios, including earnings per share surprise percentages were gathered and analyzed. We proposed and used two types, correlation based ratios and causality based ratios. An extension to the classification scheme used by [Lin et al. 2011] was proposed to more accurately classify financial reports, together with a …

A Hash-Cash Based Music Streaming Payment System, Timothy Chen Dec 2014

A Hash-Cash Based Music Streaming Payment System, Timothy Chen

Master's Projects

This project develops a hash-cash based, streaming music payment system. In our system, musicians are paid based on how long their works are listened to. Artists can upload their works to our proof-of-concept service so that people can discover and listen to them. While their works are being listened to, a mining process is run in parallel. The mining process discovers a “listening coin” based on the hash-cash algorithm. Users of our service would pay a monthly fee to access the music library. The monthly fees are then distributed to all artists proportionate to the number of virtual coins they …

Masquerade Detection Using Singular Value Decomposition, Sweta Vikram Shah

Master's Projects

Information systems and networks are highly susceptible to attacks in the form of intrusions. One such attack is by the masqueraders who impersonate legitimate users. Masqueraders can be detected in anomaly based intrusion detection by identifying the abnormalities in user behavior. This user behavior is logged in log files of different types. In our research we use the score based technique of Singular Value Decomposition to address the problem of masquerade detection on a unix based system. We have data collected in the form of sequential unix commands ran by 50 users. SVD is a linear algebraic technique, which has …

In this work, the data analysis of oscillating flapping fins is conducted for mathematical model. Data points of heave and surge force obtained by the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) for different geometrical kinds of flapping fins. The fin undergoes a combination of vertical and angular oscillatory motion, while travelling at constant forward speed. The surge thrust and heave lift are generated by the combined motion of the flapping fins, especially due to the carrier vehicle’s heave and pitch motion will be investigated to acquire system identification with CFD data available while the fin pitching motion is selected as a function …

The Relationship Between Head Coaches’ Influence And Student Engagement Of Ncaa Di Women Basketball Players: Implications For Student-Athlete Success, Kiki Baker Barnes Dec 2014

The Relationship Between Head Coaches’ Influence And Student Engagement Of Ncaa Di Women Basketball Players: Implications For Student-Athlete Success, Kiki Baker Barnes

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recently passed new legislation highlighting the critical role coaches play in student-athlete success called the Head Coach’s Academic Progress Rate (APR). The APR measure does not calculate the actions of the head coach and is therefore an inadequate measure of coaches’ influence. There are numerous verbal accounts of the influence of the coach on student-athlete success, but there is little quantitative data to support this claim. As a result, this correlational study explored the relationship between head coaches’ influence and student engagement among a sample of 135 women basketball players at National Collegiate Athletic …

Cruise Ship Preliminary Design: The Influence Of Design Features On Profitability, Justin Epstein

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a means to estimate the physical and performance characteristics of a preliminary cruise ship design. The techniques utilized to estimate these characteristics are showcased in the user-friendly interface known as the Cruise Ship Analysis Tool (CSAT). Using the CSAT, the implications that design feature decisions in the preliminary design stage have on a cruise ship’s profitability is analyzed. Then, the most profitable design feature assemblage among a finite number of varying design feature combinations is estimated and compared among cruise ship designs with different passenger carrying capacities. Profitability is analyzed using the measure of merit (MOM) known …

Large-Amplitude Vibration Of Imperfect Rectangular, Circular And Laminated Plate With Viscous Damping, He Huang Dec 2014

Large-Amplitude Vibration Of Imperfect Rectangular, Circular And Laminated Plate With Viscous Damping, He Huang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Large-amplitude vibration of thin plates and shells has been critical design issues for many engineering structures. The increasingly more stringent safety requirements and the discovery of new materials with amazingly superior properties have further focused the attention of research on this area. This thesis deals with the vibration problem of rectangular, circular and angle-ply composite plates. This vibration can be triggered by an initial vibration amplitude, or an initial velocity, or both. Four types of boundary conditions including simply supported and clamped combined with in-plane movable/immovable are considered.

To solve the differential equation generated from the vibration problem, Lindstedt's perturbation …

Modal Characterization And Structural Dynamic Response Of A Crane Fly Forewing, Jose E. Rubio Dec 2014

Modal Characterization And Structural Dynamic Response Of A Crane Fly Forewing, Jose E. Rubio

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study describes a method for conducting the structural dynamic analysis of a crane fly (family Tipulidae) forewing under different airflow conditions. Wing geometry is captured via micro-computed tomography scanning. A finite element model of the forewing is developed from the reconstructed model of the scan. The finite element model is validated by comparing the natural frequencies of an elliptical membrane with similar dimensions of the crane fly forewing to its analytical solution. Furthermore, a simulation of the fluid-structure interaction of the forewing under different airflows is performed by coupling the finite element model of the wing with a …

Incorporation Of Charge Transfer Into Classical Molecular Dynamics Force Fields With Applications In Physical Chemistry., Marielle Soniat Dec 2014

Incorporation Of Charge Transfer Into Classical Molecular Dynamics Force Fields With Applications In Physical Chemistry., Marielle Soniat

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The presence of charge transfer (CT) interactions is clear in a variety of systems. In CT, some electron density is shifted from one molecule to another (non-bonded) molecule. The importance of this CT interaction is unclear. Previous attempts to look at the conse- quences of CT required the use of ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), a computationally intensive method. Herein, a method for including CT in force field (FF) simulations is described. It is efficient, produces charges in agreement with AIMD, and prevents long- ranged CT.

This CT MD method has been applied to monatomic ions in water. When solvated, …

Template-Assisted Fabrication Of Ferromagnetic Nanomaterials, Jagnyaseni Tripathy Dec 2014

Template-Assisted Fabrication Of Ferromagnetic Nanomaterials, Jagnyaseni Tripathy

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Template assisted deposition was used to produce various nanomaterials including simple nanowires, nanorods, multi-segmented metal nanowires, core-shell nanowires, alloy and polymer wires and tubes. Anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes were used as templates for the growth of the various structures using an electrochemical deposition method and also by wetting the porous templates. In the electrochemical deposition method, the pore size of the templates affects the rate of synthesis and the structures of the nanomaterials while in the wetting method, the viscosity and reaction time in the polymer solution influence the structures of the nanomaterials.

A conventional two-step anodization procedure …

I SCHOOL IN VIRGINIA

School is a very important factor in a person's life. There are innumerable public schools all over America; each there for the same purpose. It is interesting to note that each state has an almost entirely different curriculum. The schools in Virginia stress culture. It is put far above the three "R's". The particular school I have in mind is the Jeb Stuart Grade School in Richmond. This two story building surrounded by spacious grounds in a clean residential section makes a pleasant place to start to school. Life in a Virginia grade school is leisurely. …

An Empirical Examination Of The Deca Behavioral Concerns Subscale: Establishing Measurement Invariance Between Language Forms, Veronica A. Fernandez

Open Access Theses

Appropriate assessment instruments are necessary to accurately identify children’s behavior problems and to develop interventions within the classroom. Due to increases in the cultural and linguistic diversity among the early childhood professionals, especially Spanish-speaking teachers, measures are needed in teachers’ dominant language. In response to such a need, the publishers of the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA; LeBuffe & Naglieri, 1999), a widely-used measure of children’s classroom behavior, have developed a Spanish-language form of the measure (DECA-Spanish; LeBuffe & Naglieri, 2001). In the present study, the measurement properties of the Behavioral Concerns subscale of the DECA were examined to confirm …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We report Hubble Space Telescope optical to near-infrared transmission spectroscopy of the hot-Jupiter WASP-6b, measured with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and Spitzer's InfraRed Array Camera. The resulting spectrum covers the range 0.29–4.5 μm. We find evidence for modest stellar activity of WASP-6 and take it into account in the transmission spectrum. The overall main characteristic of the spectrum is an increasing radius as a function of decreasing wavelength corresponding to a change of Δ (Rp / R*) = 0.0071 from 0.33 to 4.5 μm. The spectrum suggests an effective extinction cross-section with a power law of index consistent with …

Background

In this study we assessed the mediation role of the gestational age on the effect of the infant’s congenital heart defects (CHD) on birth-weight.

Methods

We used secondary data from the Baltimore-Washington Infant Study (1981–1989). Mediation analysis was employed to investigate whether gestational age acted as a mediator of the association between CHD and reduced birth-weight. We estimated the mediated effect, the mediation proportion, and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) using several methods.

Results

There were 3362 CHD cases and 3564 controls in the dataset with mean birth-weight of 3071 (SD = 729) and 3353 (SD = 603) …

The Geometry In Geometric Algebra, Kristopher N. Kilpatrick Dec 2014

The Geometry In Geometric Algebra, Kristopher N. Kilpatrick

Mathematics and Statistics

We present an axiomatic development of geometric algebra. One may think of a geometric algebra as allowing one to add and multiply subspaces of a vector space. Properties of the geometric product are proven and derived products called the wedge and contraction product are introduced. Linear algebraic and geometric concepts such as linear independence and orthogonality may be expressed through the above derived products. Some examples with geometric algebra are then given.

Performance Of Shallow Anchor In Ice-Rich Silt, Chuang Lin, N/A 林闯 Dec 2014

Performance Of Shallow Anchor In Ice-Rich Silt, Chuang Lin, N/A 林闯

Engineering

Shallow anchor systems have been widely used for decades due to their time and cost efficiency. Yet when it comes to cold regions like Alaska, new challenges caused by the harsh environment need to be resolved before they are used extensively in cold regions. One challenge associated with anchor installation could be the potential thawing of warm permafrost due to the grout mortar hydration, which might undermine the capacity of the anchor. Another challenge is that due to low temperature the grout may cure slower or not cure at all, which will also result in a significant decrease in the …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Maize (Zea mays) is a major staple food in Africa. However, maize production is severely reduced by damage caused by feeding lepidopteran pests. In East and Southern Africa, Chilo partellus is one of the most damaging cereal stem borers mainly found in the warmer lowland areas. In this study, it was hypothesized that the future distribution and abundance of C. partellus may be affected greatly by the current global warming. The temperature-dependent population growth potential of C. partellus was studied on artificial diet under laboratory conditions at six constant temperatures (15, 18, 20, 25, 28, 30, 32 and 35 °C), …
