In their 2012 report, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology advocated “replacing standard science laboratory courses with discovery-based research courses”—a challenging proposition that presents practical and pedagogical difficulties. In this paper, we describe our collective experiences working with the Genomics Education Partnership, a nationwide faculty consortium that aims to provide undergraduates with a research experience in genomics through a scheduled course (a classroom-based undergraduate research experience, or CURE). We examine the common barriers encountered in implementing a CURE, program elements of most value to faculty, ways in which a shared core support system can help, and the …
Optimizing Data Movement In Hybrid Analytic Systems, Patrick Michael Leyshock
Optimizing Data Movement In Hybrid Analytic Systems, Patrick Michael Leyshock
Dissertations and Theses
Hybrid systems for analyzing big data integrate an analytic tool and a dedicated data-management platform, storing data and operating on the data at both components. While hybrid systems have benefits over alternative architectures, in order to be effective, data movement between the two hybrid components must be minimized. Extant hybrid systems either fail to address performance problems stemming from inter-component data movement, or else require the user to explicitly reason about and manage data movement. My work presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a hybrid analytic system for array-structured data that automatically minimizes data movement between the hybrid components. …

The dust properties in the Large and Small Magellanic clouds (LMC/SMC) are studied using the HERITAGE Herschel Key Project photometric data in five bands from 100 to 500 μm. Three simple models of dust emission were fit to the observations: a single temperature blackbody modified by a power-law emissivity (SMBB), a single temperature blackbody modified by a broken power-law emissivity (BEMBB), and two blackbodies with different temperatures, both modified by the same power-law emissivity (TTMBB). Using these models, we investigate the origin of the submillimeter excess, defined as the submillimeter emission above that expected from SMBB models fit to observations …

Investigating Broadband Variability Of The Tev Blazar 1es 1959+650, P. T. Reynolds, Veritas
Physical Sciences Publications
We summarize broadband observations of the TeV-emitting blazar 1ES 1959+650, including optical R-band observations by the robotic telescopes Super-LOTIS and iTelescope, UV observations by Swift Ultraviolet and Optical Telescope, X-ray observations by the Swift X-ray Telescope, high-energy gamma-ray observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope, and very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations by VERITAS above 315 GeV, all taken between 2012 April 17 and 2012 June 1 (MJD 56034 and 56079). The contemporaneous variability of the broadband spectral energy distribution is explored in the context of a simple synchrotron self Compton (SSC) model. In the SSC emission scenario, we find that the …

Linear Operators That Preserve Graphical Properties Of Matrices: Isolation Numbers, Leroy B. Beasley, Seok-Zun Song, Young Bae Jun
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Let A be a Boolean {0, 1} matrix. The isolation number of A is the maximum number of ones in A such that no two are in any row or any column (that is they are independent), and no two are in a 2 × 2 submatrix of all ones. The isolation number of A is a lower bound on the Boolean rank of A. A linear operator on the set of m × n Boolean matrices is a mapping which is additive and maps the zero matrix, O, to itself. A mapping strongly preserves a set, S, if it …
Digital Image Correlation And Edge Detection: Applications In Materials Testing, Shan Yuan
Digital Image Correlation And Edge Detection: Applications In Materials Testing, Shan Yuan
Open Access Dissertations
Digital image processing (DIP) methods have been applied in civil engineering for many years. In this dissertation, DIP methods are applied to (1) quantify the mechanical properties of metallic and cementitious composites loaded in uni-axial tension, and (2) evaluate the effectiveness of removing paint from concrete surfaces. DIP is an optical method to characterize the behavior of the visible domain on the surface of the specimen. Strain, an important measurement in mechanics of materials, can be measured by a digital image processing method known as Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Traditional DIC tracks the change in position of speckles on the …

The Coveted Souls Of Oppressed Persons, Connie L. Gibb
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Marcus Aurelius (167 A.C.E. III. 16) stated that: “[b]ody, soul, intelligence: to the body belong sensations, to the soul appetites, to the intelligence principles.” In my philosophical inquiry (my play) I argue it isn’t that simple and that the concept of soul is much like what Aristotle (1994, II, 1, 412 a 28) wrote, "The soul, therefore, is the primary act of a physical body potentially possessing life." Or, like Fincher (2007, p. 32) who wrote, “My soul is me, and I own all of my soul’s abilities and experiences…” I also discuss that the intelligence of human beings could …

Drivers And Barriers For Going Green: Perceptions From The Business Practitioners In Malaysia, Loke S-P, Khalizani K, Rohati S, Sayaka A
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The changes of global environmental conditions have placed great challenges to governments and societies. While it is not easy for the companies to go green, we need a renewed concern for our environment in order to revive the nation’s economic growth, social cohesion and ecological balances. This article identifies the drivers and barriers for the business industry to adopt green practices. A total of 571 business companies from the Perak State participated in this study. Four variables: (1) Regulations (β=0.159, p<0.05); (2) Social responsibility (β=0.201, p<0.05); (3) Pro-environmental organizational culture (β=0.389, p<0.01); and (4) Organizational supports (β=0.369, p<0.01) werefound to significantly affect the company’s green initiatives. The results indicated that the main internal barriers were: it lacked of financial resources (66.2%) and skilled staff (63.9%); whereas the main external barriers were: the penalty imposed were not severe enough for making any extra efforts (64.8%) and the penalty was light for violation of environmental regulations (63.2%). This research had implications for the academics, practitioners and policy makers. It provided greater insights into the green practices in Malaysian firms. The research findings also urged the local governments to greatly enhance regulatory scrutiny on the production and manufacturing industries.
Synthesis Of Irreversible Incompletely Specified Multi-Output Functions To Reversible Eosops Circuits With Pse Gates, Robert Adrian Fiszer
Synthesis Of Irreversible Incompletely Specified Multi-Output Functions To Reversible Eosops Circuits With Pse Gates, Robert Adrian Fiszer
Dissertations and Theses
As quantum computers edge closer to viability, it becomes necessary to create logic synthesis and minimization algorithms that take into account the particular aspects of quantum computers that differentiate them from classical computers. Since quantum computers can be functionally described as reversible computers with superposition and entanglement, both advances in reversible synthesis and increased utilization of superposition and entanglement in quantum algorithms will increase the power of quantum computing.
One necessary component of any practical quantum computer is the computation of irreversible functions. However, very little work has been done on algorithms that synthesize and minimize irreversible functions into a …

As the fields of graphic and packaging design continue to evolve, it is important to keep their applications sustainable and green. Unaware graphic and packaging designers need to have an easy-to-comprehend source of information about sustainability. Developing an educational information graphics guidebook prototype has potential to serve as a unique tool for understanding the need for sustainable packaging design. The purpose of it is to eases the understanding of a complex system and enables users to discover relationships and connections among design, economy, environment, and society.
This prototype project involved designing a comprehensive sustainability symbol set where no satisfactory symbol …
Progress In Energy Storage Technologies: Models And Methods For Policy Analysis, Schuyler W. Matteson
Progress In Energy Storage Technologies: Models And Methods For Policy Analysis, Schuyler W. Matteson
Theses
Climate change and other sustainability challenges have led to the development of new technologies that increase energy efficiency and reduce the utilization of finite resources. To promote the adoption of technologies with social benefits, governments often enact policies that provide financial incentives at the point of purchase. In their current form, these subsidies have the potential to increase the diffusion of emerging technologies; however, accounting for technological progress can improve program success while decreasing net public investment.
This research develops novel methods using experience curves for the development of more efficient subsidy policies. By providing case studies in the field …

Soil Carbon And Nitrogen Mineralization And Crop Parameters In Typical Maize-Bean Intercropping In Western Kenya, Judith A. Odhiambo, Urszula Norton, Emmanuel C. Omondi, Dennis Ashilenje, Jay B. Norton
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Smallholder farmers in western Kenya who plant maize (Zea mays L.) intercropped with beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) face many challenges associated with nutrient-poor soils and weather-related crop failures. In regions where temperatures are favorable, crops are grown twice per year during long and short rainy seasons and in other regions, once per year during one long growing season. Growing crops two times per year necessitates frequent land preparation using inversion-type tillage. Little is known about the impact of current tillage-intensive crop management on annual soil organic matter (SOM) recovery. The aim of this study was to assess changes to soil …

Statistical Inference For The Mean Outcome Under A Possibly Non-Unique Optimal Treatment Strategy, Alexander R. Luedtke, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We consider challenges that arise in the estimation of the value of an optimal individualized treatment strategy defined as the treatment rule that maximizes the population mean outcome, where the candidate treatment rules are restricted to depend on baseline covariates. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the pathwise differentiability of the optimal value, a key condition needed to develop a regular asymptotically linear (RAL) estimator of this parameter. The stated condition is slightly more general than the previous condition implied in the literature. We then describe an approach to obtain root-n rate confidence intervals for the optimal value …

In the present day, security is essential for sending and receiving information. There are always stories about bank accounts being hacked, credit card numbers being stolen, and secret information being decoded. With the technology of the Internet age growing at a rapid pace, security is essential to keep privileged information safe. In order to ensure this information is kept private, so that information can be sent and received without being hacked and decoded, organizations employ different types of encryption. One of the current encoding systems is Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC). ECC uses elliptic curves over finite fields to send information …

Deriving The Dyer-Roeder Equation From The Geodesic Deviation Equation Via The Newman Penrose Null Tetrad, Aly Aly
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In this paper we examine the geodesic deviation equation using the Newman-Penrose (N-P) formalism for a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric (Carroll, S. (2004); Ryden, B. (2003); Newman & Penrose (1962)). We solved the geodesic deviation equation for angular diameter distance, using the relevant N-P components, and the resulting expression was the Dyer-Roeder equation of cosmology (Ryden, B. (2003)) (Schneider et al. (1992)). This leads us to believe that we can apply the N-P formalism to a perturbed FLRW metric and find a solvable equation for angular diameter distance (Kling & Campbell (2008)). The perturbed FLRW metric incorporates clumps of matter …

Electrostatic Force Microscopy And Electrical Isolation Of Etched Few-Layer Graphene Nano-Domains, D. Patrick Hunley, Abhishek Sundararajan, Mathias J. Boland, Douglas R. Strachan
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Nanostructured bi-layer graphene samples formed through catalytic etching are investigated with electrostatic force microscopy. The measurements and supporting computations show a variation in the microscopy signal for different nano-domains that are indicative of changes in capacitive coupling related to their small sizes. Abrupt capacitance variations detected across etch tracks indicates that the nano-domains have strong electrical isolation between them. Comparison of the measurements to a resistor-capacitor model indicates that the resistance between two bi-layer graphene regions separated by an approximately 10 nm wide etch track is greater than about 1×1012 Ω with a corresponding gap resistivity greater than about …

The Garnet Line In Oxford County, Maine Pegmatites., Myles Mathew Felch, Myles M. Felch
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The garnet line is a planar fabric occuring within the intermediate and core zone in many of the Oxford County, Maine pegmatites. This study focuses primarily on the textural and chemical characteristics of the garnet line within the Mt. Mica and western Mt. Apatite quarries. Smaller, but similarly textured garnet line analogs from the Bennett, Emmons, Havey and Tamminen quarries are also investigated. All of these textures represent specific fractionation events within their respective dikes. In some of these locations, multiple stages of crystallization occur and appear to be post-magmatic, related to late stage metasomatism. These late stage fluids are …
An Empirical Study Of Semantic Similarity In Wordnet And Word2vec, Abram Handler
An Empirical Study Of Semantic Similarity In Wordnet And Word2vec, Abram Handler
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis performs an empirical analysis of Word2Vec by comparing its output to WordNet, a well-known, human-curated lexical database. It finds that Word2Vec tends to uncover more of certain types of semantic relations than others -- with Word2Vec returning more hypernyms, synonomyns and hyponyms than hyponyms or holonyms. It also shows the probability that neighbors separated by a given cosine distance in Word2Vec are semantically related in WordNet. This result both adds to our understanding of the still-unknown Word2Vec and helps to benchmark new semantic tools built from word vectors.
Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Of An Ideal Anguilliform Swimming Motion, Charles Rogers
Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Of An Ideal Anguilliform Swimming Motion, Charles Rogers
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
There is an ongoing interest in analyzing the flow characteristics of swimming fish. Biology has resulted in some very efficient motions and formulating these motions is of interest to engineers. One such theory was written by Dr. William Vorus and Dr. Brandon Taravella involving ideal efficiency. It is therefore interesting to test the calculations to see if it is possible to design a motion that can create thrust without necessarily creating vorticity. The computational fluid dynamics software of ANSYS Fluent was used to calculate the resulting flow field of the eel motion to compare with the theoretical values.

Investigation Of The Quenching Characteristics Of Steel Components By Static And Dynamic Analyses, Pratik Sarker
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Machine components made of steel are subjected to heat treatment processes for improving mechanical properties in order to enhance product life and is usually done by quenching. During quenching, heat is transferred rapidly from the hot metal component to the quenchant and that rapid temperature drop induces phase transformation in the metal component. As a result, quenching generates some residual stresses and deformations in the material. Therefore, to estimate the temperature distribution, residual stress, and deformation computationally; three-dimensional finite element models are developed for two different steel components – a spur gear and a circular tube by a static and …
