Weather Research Requirements To Improve Space Launch From Cape Canaveral Air Force Station And Nasa Kennedy Space Center, William P. Roeder, Lisa L. Huddleston, William H. Bauman Iii, Kelly B. Doser

Space Traffic Management Conference

Weather has a large affect on operations at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) and NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Weather is the leading source of scrubs and delays to space launch from CCAFS/KSC. Weather has an even larger impact on ground processing as space launch vehicles and payloads are prepared in the months before space launch. Many of those operations are very sensitive to weather. In addition, the weather in Florida is notoriously difficult to predict, especially during the summer when rapid deep convection can occur in minutes. Finally, the weather can be extremely subtle in this area during …

Challenges Associated With Space Weather Analysis And Prediction, John Lanicci

Space Traffic Management Conference

The term “space weather” is typically used to describe environmental conditions in the region extending from the sun’s surface, through the interplanetary medium, to the earth’s magnetic field and upper atmosphere, with a focus on those conditions that can affect the earth, its technological systems, and population. Space weather conditions are monitored continuously by a number of agencies around the world. These agencies use both satellite- and ground-based measurements to build analyses and employ predictive models that form the basis for impacts-based products dealing with myriad users in satellite operations, the utility industry, aviation, and satellite-based communications, to name a …

Bond-Slip Characteristics Between Cold-Formed Metal And Concrete, Yazdan Majdi, Cheng-Tzu Thomas Hsu, Sun Punurai Nov 2014

Bond-Slip Characteristics Between Cold-Formed Metal And Concrete, Yazdan Majdi, Cheng-Tzu Thomas Hsu, Sun Punurai

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Composite action in systems consisting of steel and concrete depends on an effective shear-transfer mechanism between the two materials. Such mechanism for smooth steel surfaces inside concrete will be limited to the bond-slip behavior at the steel/concrete interfaces. This research investigates the bond-slip behavior of galvanized cold-formed (light gauge) steel profiles embedded in concrete. A new innovative pull-out test is presented and global bond-slip curves for different values of concrete strength are obtained from such tests. Next, through an innovative procedure, mathematical equations and a few points from the experimental global bond-slip curves are used to develop a bi-linear local …

The Structural Basis Of Gβ5-Rgs7 Interaction With The Muscarinic M3 Receptor And Implications For Its Role In Functional Pathway Selectivity, Darla Karpinsky-Semper Nov 2014

The Structural Basis Of Gβ5-Rgs7 Interaction With The Muscarinic M3 Receptor And Implications For Its Role In Functional Pathway Selectivity, Darla Karpinsky-Semper

Open Access Dissertations

The neurotransmitter acetylcholine (Ach) is arguably the most important in the CNS. Two classes of receptors are activated by Ach: nicotinic (ionotropic) and muscarinic (metabotropic). Muscarinic receptor pharmacology is well-defined, but still lacks receptor sub-type specificity seen in other GPCR families like adrenergic receptors. We have found that Gβ5-RGS7, a unique G-protein obligate heterodimer complex, selectively attenuates Ca2+ signaling through the muscarinic M3 receptor (M3R). The G protein beta subunit Gβ5 uniquely forms heterodimers with R7 family regulators of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins (RGS6, RGS7, RGS9, and RGS11) instead of Gγ. While the Gβ5-RGS7 complex attenuates Ca2+ signaling mediated …

Towards Quantifying Beneficial System Effects In Cold-Formed Steel Wood-Sheathed Floor Diaphragms, A. Chatterjee, Y. Xiang, C. D. Moen, S. R. Arwade, Benjamin W. Schafer Nov 2014

Towards Quantifying Beneficial System Effects In Cold-Formed Steel Wood-Sheathed Floor Diaphragms, A. Chatterjee, Y. Xiang, C. D. Moen, S. R. Arwade, Benjamin W. Schafer

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Cold-formed steel wood-sheathed floor diaphragm system behavior is analyzed from a system reliability perspective. Floor systems consisting of oriented strand board (OSB), cold-formed steel (CFS) joists, tracks and screw fasteners are modeled using shell and spring elements in ABAQUS. (Dassault-Systems ())The models consider typical seismic demand loads, with careful treatment of light steel framing diaphragm boundary conditions and OSB sheathing kinematics, i.e., two sheets pulling apart or bearing against each other at an ultimate limit state, consistent with existing experimental results. The finite element results are used to build surrogate mathematical idealizations (series, parallel-brittle and parallel-ductile) for the critical system …

The Development Of A Valid And Reliable Biogeochemistry Concept Inventory, Chris Mead Nov 2014

The Development Of A Valid And Reliable Biogeochemistry Concept Inventory, Chris Mead

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

Concept inventories are a commonly used tool to measure conceptual understanding. To date, concept inventories have been published for geology, chemistry, and biology, but no instrument has been designed to measure conceptual understanding at the intersection of those fields. To fill that gap, we constructed a 32‐item biogeochemistry concept inventory (BGC‐CI). Item response theory analysis, using the Rasch model, shows the BGC‐CI is a reliable and valid tool to measure the biogeochemistry knowledge of science majors. Because biogeochemistry is an interdisciplinary field, we were concerned about the unidimensionality of the instrument. However, our analysis showed the BGC‐CI to be acceptably …

A Radiative Transfer Modeling Methodology In Gas-Liquid Multiphase Flow Simulations, Gautham Krishnamoorthy, Rydell Klosterman, Dylan Shallbetter Nov 2014

A Radiative Transfer Modeling Methodology In Gas-Liquid Multiphase Flow Simulations, Gautham Krishnamoorthy, Rydell Klosterman, Dylan Shallbetter

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

A methodology for performing radiative transfer calculations in computational fluid dynamic simulations of gas-liquid multiphase flows is presented. By considering an externally irradiated bubble column photoreactor as our model system, the bubble scattering coefficients were determined through add-on functions by employing as inputs the bubble volume fractions, number densities, and the fractional contribution of each bubble size to the bubble volume from four different multiphase modeling options. The scattering coefficient profiles resulting from the models were significantly different from one another and aligned closely with their predicted gas-phase volume fraction distributions. The impacts of the multiphase modeling option, initial bubble …

The Use Of Artificial Neural Networks To Describe And Predict The Presence Of Harmful Algae In The Indian River Lagoon, Florida, Erin L. Faltin Nov 2014

The Use Of Artificial Neural Networks To Describe And Predict The Presence Of Harmful Algae In The Indian River Lagoon, Florida, Erin L. Faltin

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Harmful algal blooms are a natural phenomenon of growing global concern. Dense blooms of single celled phytoplankton can have wide reaching effects on both the aquatic ecosystem and surrounding economies. This study constructed artificial neural network models of the northern Indian River Lagoon, Florida, using an existing dataset. Models attempted to both describe and predict chlorophyll a, as an indicator of total algal biomass, or Pyrodinium bahamense, a dinoflagellate known to bloom and produce the paralytic shellfish toxin saxitoxin in the lagoon. Descriptive models used current data while predictive models used time-lagged data as input. Further analyses were conducted on …

A Methodology For Near-Field Tsunami Inundation Forecasting: Application To The 2011 Tohoku Tsunami, Aditya Riadi Gusman, Yuichiro Tanioka, Breanyn Macinnes, Hiroaki Tsushima Nov 2014

A Methodology For Near-Field Tsunami Inundation Forecasting: Application To The 2011 Tohoku Tsunami, Aditya Riadi Gusman, Yuichiro Tanioka, Breanyn Macinnes, Hiroaki Tsushima

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Existing tsunami early warning systems in the world can give either one or a combination of estimated tsunami arrival times, heights, or qualitative tsunami forecasts before the tsunami hits near-field coastlines. A future tsunami early warning system should be able to provide a reliable near-field tsunami inundation forecast on high-resolution topography within a short time period. Here we describe a new methodology for near-field tsunami inundation forecasting. In this method, a precomputed tsunami inundation and precomputed tsunami waveform database is required. After information about a tsunami source is estimated, tsunami waveforms at nearshore points can be simulated in real time. …

Thermal Assessment Of A Latent-Heat Energy Storage Module During Melting And Freezing For Solar Energy Applications, Antonio Miguel Ramos Archibold Nov 2014

Thermal Assessment Of A Latent-Heat Energy Storage Module During Melting And Freezing For Solar Energy Applications, Antonio Miguel Ramos Archibold

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Capital investment reduction, exergetic efficiency improvement and material compatibility issues have been identified as the primary techno-economic challenges associated, with the near-term development and deployment of thermal energy storage (TES) in commercial-scale concentrating solar power plants. Three TES techniques have gained attention in the solar energy research community as possible candidates to reduce the cost of solar-generated electricity, namely (1) sensible heat storage, (2) latent heat (tank filled with phase change materials (PCMs) or encapsulated PCMs packed in a vessel) and (3) thermochemical storage. Among these the PCM macro-encapsulation approach seems to be one of the most-promising methods because of …

Social-Emotional Strengths And Academic Outcomes In Kindergarten Students, Bryan B. Bander Nov 2014

Social-Emotional Strengths And Academic Outcomes In Kindergarten Students, Bryan B. Bander

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Social-emotional competence has received increased attention as being critical to a student's success in the classroom. Social-emotional strengths are multidimensional and include assets such as social competence, self-regulation, empathy, and responsibility; however, previous research has not investigated which of these strengths contribute most to a student's academic success. Additionally, limited research has investigated the use of multiple informants (e.g., parents and teachers) to determine whose perceptions are more predictive of academic achievement in kindergarten students. This study examined the relationship between social-emotional strengths, as rated by parents and teachers on the SEARS (Merrell, 2011), and academic outcomes, using the AIMSweb …

Mimicking Metabolism Of A Reversed Chloroquine Antimalarial, Kelsie Lynn Kendrick Nov 2014

Mimicking Metabolism Of A Reversed Chloroquine Antimalarial, Kelsie Lynn Kendrick

Dissertations and Theses

The aim of this study was to elucidate the oxidation products of a candidate antimalarial drug, PL69, using a porphyrin system and to determine the accuracy of the oxidation products produced, as compared to what is expected in metabolism. PL69 is a reversed chloroquine (RCQ) that is active against chloroquine resistant malaria. Porphyrin oxidation systems have been shown to mimic in vitro enzymatic metabolism reactions. PL69 and its known metabolite, PL16, were incubated with the porphyrin system, and then the oxidation products were collected and separated by HPLC. The oxidation products were characterized by NMR and mass spectrometry and compared …

An Agile Implementation Within A Medical Device Software Organisation, Martin Mchugh, Fergal Mc Caffery, Garret Coady Nov 2014

An Agile Implementation Within A Medical Device Software Organisation, Martin Mchugh, Fergal Mc Caffery, Garret Coady

Conference papers

Three surveys conducted over a 6 year period revealed that medical device software organisations have difficulties in the area of requirements management, namely accommodating changes in requirements. Medical device software is traditionally developed in accordance with a plan driven software development lifecycle (SDLC). These SDLCs are rigid and inflexible to changes once the requirements management stage has been completed. Agile methods are gaining momentum in non-regulated industries but as of yet, the adoption of these methods in regulated industries such as the medical device software domain remains low. This study presents an implementation of agile methods within a medical device …

Co-Located Wave And Offshore Wind Farms: A Preliminary Approach To The Shadow Effect, Collazo C Perez, S Astariz, J Abanades, D Greaves, G Iglesias Nov 2014

Co-Located Wave And Offshore Wind Farms: A Preliminary Approach To The Shadow Effect, Collazo C Perez, S Astariz, J Abanades, D Greaves, G Iglesias

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In recent years, with the consolidation of offshore wind technology and the progress carried out for wave energy technology, the option of combine both technologies has arisen. This combination rest mainly in two main reasons: in one hand, to increase the sustainability of both energies by means of a more rational harnessing of the natural resources; in the other hand, to reduce the costs of both technologies by sharing some of the most important costs of an offshore project. In addition to these two powerful reasons there are a number of technology synergies between wave and wind systems which makes …

Numerical Investigation Of Cold-Formed Steel Top Hat Purlins, Asraf Uzzaman, Andrzej M. Wrzesien, Robert Hamilton, James B. P. Lim, David Nash Nov 2014

Numerical Investigation Of Cold-Formed Steel Top Hat Purlins, Asraf Uzzaman, Andrzej M. Wrzesien, Robert Hamilton, James B. P. Lim, David Nash

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper considers the use of cold-formed steel top-hat sections for purlins as an alternative to conventional zed-sections. The use of such top-hat sections may be viable for use in cold-formed steel portal framing systems, where both the frame spacing and purlin span may be smaller than in conventional hot-rolled steel portal frames. Furthermore, such sections are torsionally stiffer than zed-sections, and so have a greater resistance to lateral-torsional buckling. They also do not require the installation of anti-sag rods. The paper describes non-linear elasto plastic finite element analyses conducted on top-hat sections. The results of twenty-seven tests on four …

Challenges For A South Texas Spaceport, Edward Ellegood, Wayne Eleazer

Space Traffic Management Conference

With approval of an environmental assessment by the FAA, SpaceX has decided to proceed with development of a new spaceport south of Brownsville, Texas, for launching commercial satellites into equatorial orbits. The company plans to launch (and potentially land) its vehicles within a very limited corridor to avoid overflight of populated landmasses in Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, and Florida. In establishing a range safety capability that meets FAA requirements, SpaceX will also have to devise plans for dealing with domestic and international maritime traffic, oil drilling operations, and commercial air traffic corridors. This paper will detail some of the technical, safety, …
