Evaluation Of Selected Spectral Vegetation Indices In Senescent Rangeland Canopy Using Landsat Imagery, Marla Collins Jan 2014

Evaluation Of Selected Spectral Vegetation Indices In Senescent Rangeland Canopy Using Landsat Imagery, Marla Collins

Theses and Dissertations

Grassland birds are diminishing more steadily and rapidly than other North American birds in general. The nesting success of some grassland bird species depends on the amount of nonproductive vegetation (NPV). To estimate NPV land managers are currently using the Robel pole visual obstruction reading methods. Researchers with the USDA Agricultural Research Service's (ARS) Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory in Mandan, ND, recently established statistical relationships between photosynthetic vegetation (PV), NPV and spectral vegetation indices (SVIs) derived from more sensitive and more detailed, but less accessible and more costly hyperspectral aerial imagery. This study is an extension of this previous …

Geometry Of Quivers, Patrick Andrew Durkin Jan 2014

Geometry Of Quivers, Patrick Andrew Durkin

Theses and Dissertations

A quiver is a directed graph, but the term usually implies such a graph is being considered along with representations. These representations consist of vector spaces and linear transformations. We explore some the connections between quivers and geometric structures. To begin, we consider a theorem that says every projective variety can be considered as a quiver Grassmannian. The reasoning of the proof is demonstrated by example. We then prove the existence of a countable quiver containing every finite quiver as a subquiver. Following this we consider some properties of its category of representations. Finally, we give an overview of quiver …

Assessing Student Learning: A U.S./U.K. International Comparative Study, Kristin Anne Garaas-Johnson Jan 2014

Assessing Student Learning: A U.S./U.K. International Comparative Study, Kristin Anne Garaas-Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the role of assessments of student learning in the United States, specifically a school system in North Dakota, comparatively to that of a school system in Surrey, England. Using a conceptual framework that is influenced by the work of Stiggins, Arter, Chappuis, and Chappuis with the Assessment Training Institute (2011) and the Assessment Reform Group (2002) on creating effective, balanced assessments for learning, three questions guided my study:

1. What are secondary (students ages 14-18) educators' beliefs about what, why, how, and for whom school systems are assessing students' learning?

2. What is the difference between educators' …

A Foundational Methodology For Determining System Static Complexity Using Notional Lunar Oxygen Production Processes, Nicholas J. Long Jan 2014

A Foundational Methodology For Determining System Static Complexity Using Notional Lunar Oxygen Production Processes, Nicholas J. Long

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis serves to develop a preliminary foundational methodology for evaluating the static complexity of future lunar oxygen production systems when extensive information is not yet available about the various systems under consideration. Evaluating static complexity, as part of a overall system complexity analysis, is an important consideration in ultimately selecting a process to be used in a lunar base. When system complexity is higher, there is generally an overall increase in risk which could impact the safety of astronauts and the economic performance of the mission. To evaluate static complexity in lunar oxygen production, static complexity is simplified and …

Advances In The Electrodeposition Of Aluminum From Ionic Liquid Based Electrolytes, Kirt Leadbetter Jan 2014

Advances In The Electrodeposition Of Aluminum From Ionic Liquid Based Electrolytes, Kirt Leadbetter

Theses and Dissertations

Aluminum plating is of considerable technical and economic interest because it provides an eco-friendly substitute for cadmium coatings used on many military systems. However, cadmium has been determined to be a significant environmental safety and occupational health (ESOH) hazard because of its toxicity and carcinogenic nature. Furthermore, the cost of treating and disposing of generated wastes, which often contain cyanide, is costly and is becoming prohibitive in the face of increasingly stringent regulatory standards. The non-toxic alternative aluminum is equivalent or superior in performance to cadmium. In addition, it could serve to provide an alternative to hexavalent chromium coatings used …

Climate Change Detection And Attribution Using Gps Radio Occultation And Cmip5 Gcm Data, Sergey Molodtsov

Theses and Dissertations

General circulation models (GCMs) show a distinct anthropogenic fingerprint - the thermal expansion of Hadley Cell. This response to the increase of atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases (GHG) is evident under a variety of forcing scenarios. However the investigation of the anthropogenic signal in the real climate system is challenging because anthropogenic signal is immersed in the natural variability and it requires highly quality data to separate signal from background variability. GPS Radio Occultation (GPS RO) technique becomes close to meeting all of the quality requirements, enabling it to become the benchmark for the climate data. The analysis was implemented …

This study included a sampling of six rural principals in North Dakota. The …

Bayesian Modeling For Dealing With Uncertainty In Cognitive Radios, Hector Ivan Reyes Moncayo Jan 2014

Bayesian Modeling For Dealing With Uncertainty In Cognitive Radios, Hector Ivan Reyes Moncayo

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless communication systems can be affected by several factors, including propagation losses, co-channel interference, and multipath fading. Uncertainty affects all of these factors making it even more difficult to model these systems. This dissertation proposes the use of probabilistic graphical models (PGM), such as Bayesian Networks and Influence Diagrams, as the core for reasoning and decision making in adaptive radios operating under uncertainty. PGM constitute a tool to understand and model complex relations among random variables. This dissertation explains how to build effective communication models that perform its functions under uncertainty. In addition, this work also presents a spectrum sensing …

Determining The Origin And Possible Mechanisms Of Qpos In X-Ray Emissions Of Neutron Stars And Black Holes, Brent Thomson

Theses and Dissertations

QPOs (Quasi-Periodic Oscillations) are time oscillations that appear in the light curve of observational data in x-ray bands. They are of mysterious origin although they are believed to be a result of the intense gravity around neutron stars and black holes and emit x-rays from accretion disks. I investigate a derived ratio between two periods has been found in the QPO data. The two periods, which appear as peaks in the power density spectrum have been found to be in a 3:2 ratio and can possibly distinguish theoretical models. In the work presented here, two physical approaches are developed that …
