Electric-Magnetic Duality And Renormalization In Curved Spacetimes, Ivan Agullo, Aitor Landete, Jose Navarro-Salas
Faculty Publications
We point out that the duality symmetry of free electromagnetism does not hold in the quantum theory if an arbitrary classical gravitational background is present. The symmetry breaks in the process of renormalization, as also happens with conformal invariance. We show that a similar duality anomaly appears for a massless scalar field in 1+1 dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Trials aimed at preventing cognitive decline through cognitive stimulation among those with normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment are of significant importance in delaying the onset of dementia and reducing dementia prevalence. One challenge in these prevention trials is sample recruitment bias. Those willing to volunteer for these trials could be socially active, in relatively good health, and have high educational levels and cognitive function. These participants' characteristics could reduce the generalizability of study results and, more importantly, mask trial effects. We developed a randomized controlled trial to examine whether conversation-based cognitive stimulation delivered through personal computers, a webcam …
The Use Of Polystyrene-Tethered Fullerenes As Stabilizers In Bulk Heterojunctions, Joshua A. Moore
The Use Of Polystyrene-Tethered Fullerenes As Stabilizers In Bulk Heterojunctions, Joshua A. Moore
Theses and Dissertations
Self-assembly of nanoparticles can potentially provide improvements for many current applications and could influence the design of future technologies. The assembly of nanoparticles, which can be controlled through external forces or through molecular interactions, can affect the properties of a material. Nanoparticles can be chemically modified by attaching molecules such as polymers to their surface. The nature and placement of these tethers affects the arrangement of the nanoparticles leading to materials with novel chemical, electrical, and physical properties. In this research, the assembly of the fullerene (C60) based nanoparticles was modified using polystyrene-tethered fullerenes (PTFs) as additives. Polystyrene (PS) was …
Neural Network Based Emg Driven Modeling And Control Of Human Walking, Alaa Muheddin Abdulrahman
Neural Network Based Emg Driven Modeling And Control Of Human Walking, Alaa Muheddin Abdulrahman
Theses and Dissertations
Human body modeling (HBM) offers the benefit of replicating human activity into robotics and rehabilitation devices. Gait impairment is a consequence of several diseases like stroke, spinal cord injury, or Parkinson' disease. The modeling techniques developed in robotics have been used to improve gait abnormalities in walking and in building Exoskeletal robots. HBM is resource intensive as it requires setting-up laboratory facilities and using expensive instruments. Further, the data acquired is limited to the number of the participants. In addition, the accuracy of the model is important as it is related to human pathology. In this research, several Matlab based …
Amide Based Metal Complexes For The Catalytic Transformation Of Carbon Dioxide To Cyclic Carbonates, Punnamchandar Ramidi
Amide Based Metal Complexes For The Catalytic Transformation Of Carbon Dioxide To Cyclic Carbonates, Punnamchandar Ramidi
Theses and Dissertations
Use of carbon dioxide (CO2) for the production of industrially important organic compounds has drawn great deal of attention in recent years, especially in terms of sustainable development based on green chemistry. The use of CO2 as a starting material may replace several toxic C1 synthons such as isocyanates, phosgene etc. Among many reactions involving CO2, synthesis of cyclic carbonate using epoxide under catalytic conditions has drawn major attention. Cyclic carbonates are odorless, colorless, biodegradable solvents which have found several applications as polar solvents, electrolytic material and precursor in the production of polycarbonates as well as pharmaceutical chemicals. However, elevated …

Research And Development Of Carbon Nanostructured Materials Based Solar Cells, Muatez Zamil Mohammed
Theses and Dissertations
The main goal of this research is to fabricate carbon nanostructured materials, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, etc., to apply in the groundbreaking third generation photovoltaic devices. I investigated the electric and optical transport on: MWNTs/Si hybrid solar cells, acid-enhanced MWNTs/n-Si heterojunction for light harvesting, photovoltaic properties of CdS/MWNTs/n-Si, n-p-n transistor structure devices, NiOx/graphene/Si double Schottky diodes for enhanced photo-conversion, Cu2O nanorods for hybrid solar cell applications. The desired outcome in researching these novel carbon nanostructured materials is the decrease in fabrication costs. The MWNTs/n-Si junction showed a strong rectifying behavior, while the MWNTs/p-Si junction formed on ohmic-like contact. Photovoltaic …
Linking Photosynthesis Physiology Of Upland Hardwood Reproduction To Ecology And Silviculture In The Arkansas Ozarks, Kutcher K. Cunningham
Linking Photosynthesis Physiology Of Upland Hardwood Reproduction To Ecology And Silviculture In The Arkansas Ozarks, Kutcher K. Cunningham
Theses and Dissertations
Oak (Quercus) forests in the Arkansas Ozarks have been important culturally, ecologically and environmentally for centuries. Historically these forests were fire dependent and dominated by oak species. In the past century, fire suppression and land management have caused these forests to densify. As a result, oaks are increasingly less abundant following disturbance in natural hardwood stands. Many applied ecological studies have explored methods and practices to maintain oak species in newly developing stands. This study attempted to link the mechanistic physiology of oak and non-oak reproduction to the applied ecological work. Varying stand conditions were generated in an undisturbed mature …

Solution Processed Cu(In,Ga)S2 Thin Film And Nanowire Photovoltaics, Johnthan Armstrong
Solution Processed Cu(In,Ga)S2 Thin Film And Nanowire Photovoltaics, Johnthan Armstrong
Theses and Dissertations
Solar energy conversion is a highly attractive process for clean and renewable power for the future. Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2/CdS/ZnO has proven itself to be a worthwhile photovoltaic combination achieving record efficiencies upwards of 20%. These record efficiencies have been obtained through vacuum-based approaches. However, the high cost of vacuum-based fabrication processes become a barrier to affordable solar cells as an energy source. As a result, solution-based approaches have become the focus of many studies which have achieved record efficiencies of 15%. These solution-based approaches have not matched up with the vacuum-based approaches. In this work, we investigate methods to improve the solution-based …
Biological Processing Rhythms In Beginning Readers: A Spectrographic Examination Of Oral Reading Behavior On Texts Of Increasing Difficulty, Laura Juhl
Theses and Dissertations
A qualitative comparative research design grounded in the theory of biological processing rhythms (Holdaway, 1979, Miner, 1903) described oral reading behaviors in different levels of beginning early readers during oral reading of texts of increasing difficulty. Spectrographic analysis with waveform data triangulated with running record data, Slosson Oral Reading Tests (SORT-R3) (Slosson & Nicholson, 1990) and transcriptions allowed an in-depth analysis into the behaviors. Three research questions guided the analysis: (1) How do biological processing rhythms operate with different levels of beginning readers? (2) How do biological processing rhythms, as examined through waveforms of oral reading behavior, operate as beginning …

The study utilized the casual-comparative design with an ANCOVA statistical method to determine the differences between an extended versus traditional year models and students who took …
Myoelectric Prostheses: Novel Methodologies For Enhancing Usability And Control, Ghulam Rasool
Myoelectric Prostheses: Novel Methodologies For Enhancing Usability And Control, Ghulam Rasool
Theses and Dissertations
Control of powered prostheses using the information from leftover muscles in amputees is a challenging problem. I investigated the problem with a view to find clinically reliable and robust schemes that can interpret human intent and control a powered prosthesis in real-time. Recently, pattern classification systems have been suggested to map muscle activation patterns to the human intent (or the movement). However, due to the underlying generic structure, system-specific information cannot be exclusively incorporated into pattern classification algorithms. I have proposed two new methodologies in my research. The first one extended the pattern classification with a new feature set comprised …

On Dual Toric Complete Intersection Codes, Pinar Celebi Demiraslan, Ivan Soprunov
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
In this paper we study duality for evaluation codes on intersections of ℓ hypersurfaces with given ℓ-dimensional Newton polytopes, so called toric complete intersection codes. In particular, we give a condition for such a code to be quasi-self-dual. In the case of it reduces to a combinatorial condition on the Newton polygons. This allows us to give an explicit construction of dual and quasi-self-dual toric complete intersection codes. We provide a list of examples over and an algorithm for producing them.

We welcome this further discussion of our results on the age of the Great Gallery rock art in the Canyonlands of Utah. The comment by Simon and Reed (1) focuses on just one of the three components of our study (2), which is presented in greater technical detail in ref. 3 and is surely our best-constrained and least-surprising result: the dating of a rock-fall that removed some of the art and thus provides a minimum age. Simon and Reed (1) point out that the Great Gallery panel is not pristine and relate the sordid human history of visitation and possible …

Ontogenetic Scaling Patterns And Functional Anatomy Of The Pelvic Limb Musculature In Emus (Dromaius Novaehollandiae), Luis P. Lamas, Russell P. Main, John R. Hutchinson
Department of Basic Medical Sciences Faculty Publications
Emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) are exclusively terrestrial, bipedal and cursorial ratites with some similar biomechanical characteristics to humans. Their growth rates are impressive, as their body mass increases eighty-fold from hatching to adulthood whilst maintaining the same mode of locomotion throughout life. These ontogenetic characteristics stimulate biomechanical questions about the strategies that allow emus to cope with their rapid growth and locomotion, which can be partly addressed via scaling (allometric) analysis of morphology. In this study we have collected pelvic limb anatomical data (muscle architecture, tendon length, tendon mass and bone lengths) and calculated muscle physiological cross sectional area …
Characterizing Fetal Sleep States Of Iugr And Low-Risk Fetuses Using Fetal Magnetocardiography, Bhargavi Sriram
Characterizing Fetal Sleep States Of Iugr And Low-Risk Fetuses Using Fetal Magnetocardiography, Bhargavi Sriram
Theses and Dissertations
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a fetal condition characterized by growth-rate reduction. Afflicted fetuses tend to display abnormalities in heart rate. Hence, studying its heart rate variability (HRV) along with comparisons against normal fetal HRV might give some insight into the heart rate dynamics between the two groups. Heart rate variability (HRV) is one of the prominent markers that could help in identifying fetal distress. Four fetal heart rate patterns were previously defined based on HRV, which can provide clinicians with valuable information regarding fetus health during pregnancy. Past studies that differentiate the HRV with or without considering patterns, have …

International Journal of Speleology
Surface channel incision rates are of broad geomorphological interest because they set the boundary conditions for landscape change by affecting changes in local relief and hillslope angles. We report groundwater table lowering rates associated with subsurface Buckeye Creek and the surface channel of Spring Creek in southeastern West Virginia, USA. The mountainous watersheds have drainage areas of 14 km2 and 171 km2, respectively. The lowering rates are derived from U/Th-dating of stalagmites and the paleomagnetostratigraphy of clastic sediments in Buckeye Creek Cave. The oldest stalagmites have a minimum age of 0.54 Ma and we use a minimum …

Cartan Subalgebras, Compact Roots And The Satake Diagram For Su(2, 2), Ian M. Anderson
Tutorials on... in 1 hour or less
In this worksheet we use the 15-dimensional real Lie algebra su(2, 2) to illustrate some important points regarding the general structure theory and classification of real semi-simple Lie algebras.
1. Recall that a real semi-simple Lie algebra g is called a compact Lie algebra if the Killing form is negative definite. The Lie algebra g is compact if and only if all the root vectors for any Cartan subalgebra are purely imaginary. However, if the root vectors are purely imaginary for some choice of Cartan subalgebra it is not necessarily true that the Lie algebra is compact.
2. A real …

Strain-Driven Growth Of Gaas(111) Quantum Dots With Low Fine Structure Splitting, Paul J. Simmonds
Strain-Driven Growth Of Gaas(111) Quantum Dots With Low Fine Structure Splitting, Paul J. Simmonds
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Symmetric quantum dots (QDs) on (111)-oriented surfaces are promising candidates for generating polarization-entangled photons due to their low excitonic fine structure splitting(FSS). However, (111) QDs are difficult to grow. The conventional use of compressive strain to drive QD self-assembly fails to form 3D nanostructures on (111) surfaces. Instead, we demonstrate that (111) QDs self-assemble under tensile strain by growing GaAs QDs on an InP(111)A substrate. Tensile GaAs self-assembly produces a low density of QDs with a symmetric triangular morphology. Coherent, tensile QDs are observed without dislocations, and the QDs luminescence at room temperature. Single QD measurements reveal low FSS with …

Nuclear Structure Aspects Of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay, B. Alex Brown, Mihai Horoi, Roman A. Sen′Kov
Publications and Research
We decompose the neutrinoless double-beta decay matrix elements into sums of products over the intermediate nucleus with two less nucleons. We find that the sum is dominated by the J^pi=0^+ ground state of this intermediate nucleus for both the light and heavy neutrino decay processes. This provides a new theoretical tool for comparing and improving nuclear structure models. It also provides the connection to two-nucleon transfer experiments.

The lolines are a class of bioprotective alkaloids that are produced by Epichloë species, fungal endophytes of grasses. These alkaloids are saturated 1-aminopyrrolizidines with a C2 to C7 ether bridge, and are structurally differentiated by the various modifications of the 1-amino group: -NH2 (norloline), -NHCH3 (loline), -N(CH3)2 (N-methylloline), -N(CH3)Ac (N-acetylloline), -NHAc (N-acetylnorloline), and -N(CH3)CHO (N-formylloline). Other than the LolP cytochrome P450, which is required for conversion of N-methylloline to N-formylloline, the enzymatic steps for loline diversification have not yet been established. …

A strong teleconnection exists between the sea surface temperature (SST) over the tropical Pacific and the winter precipitation in the southeastern United States (SE US).This feature is adopted to validate the fidelity of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) in this study. In addition, the authors examine whether the teleconnection pattern persists in the future under a global warming scenario. Generally, most of the eight selected models show a positive correlation between November SST over Ni˜no 3 region and December–February (DJF) mean daily precipitation anomalies over the SE US, consistent with the observation. However, the models with poor realization …

Within minutes after emission, rapid, complex photochemistry within a biomass burning smoke plume can cause large changes in the concentrations of ozone (O3) and organic aerosol (OA). Being able to understand and simulate this rapid chemical evolution under a wide variety of conditions is a critical part of forecasting the impact of these fires on air quality, atmospheric composition, and climate. Here we use version 2.1 of the Aerosol Simulation Program (ASP) to simulate the evolution of O3 and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) within a young biomass burning smoke plume from the Williams prescribed burn in chaparral, …
