Direct Electrochemistry And Glucose Biosensing Of Glucose Oxidase-Gold Nanoparticles Composite Synthesized By Enzyme Method, Fang He, Xiao-Li Qin, Ying-Chun Fu, Chao Chen, Qing-Ji Xie, Shou-Zhuo Yao Dec 2014

Direct Electrochemistry And Glucose Biosensing Of Glucose Oxidase-Gold Nanoparticles Composite Synthesized By Enzyme Method, Fang He, Xiao-Li Qin, Ying-Chun Fu, Chao Chen, Qing-Ji Xie, Shou-Zhuo Yao

Journal of Electrochemistry

Glucose oxidase (GOx)-gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) composite was synthesized by the one-pot enzyme reaction in the mixture solution of NaAuCl4, GOx and glucose, and a Nafion/GOx-AuNPs/glassy carbon electrode was fabricated by the cast-coating method to examine the direct electrochemistry of GOx and the biosensing performance on this electrode. Such a GOx-AuNPs composite showed good direct-electrochemistry activity and bioactivity of GOx, probably because the enzyme-mediated AuNPs are close to the redox active centers of GOx. This enzyme electrode exhibited a linear amperometric response to glucose concentration (0.54 mmol·L-1) at -0.4 V (vs. SCE), and a detection limit of …

Preparation Of Surface Molecularly Imprinted Magnetic Nanoparticles For Hemoglobin Sensing, Chun-Fang Huang, Gui-Hong Yao, Jian-Ding Qiu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Surface molecularly imprinted magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by employing dopamine (DA) as a functional monomer, hemoglobin (Hb) as a template, H2PtCl6 as an oxidant triggered DA polymerization on the surface of the Fe3O4 NPs. The Hb and the formed platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) were embedded into the polydopamine (PDA). After removal of the Hb, the surface molecularly imprinted magnetic nanoparticles (imprinted Fe3O4/PDA-PtNPs) were formed, and then simply immobilized on the magnetic glassy carbon electrode (imprinted Fe3O4/PDA-PtNPs/MGCE) for Hb sensing. The imprinted Fe3O4/PDA-PtNPs …

Resolve Mono-Electronic Process In The Voltammetric Behaviors Of Multi-Redox Bis-Coenzyme Q0, Hao Zhou, Yi-Tao Long Dec 2014

Resolve Mono-Electronic Process In The Voltammetric Behaviors Of Multi-Redox Bis-Coenzyme Q0, Hao Zhou, Yi-Tao Long

Journal of Electrochemistry

A widely held concept in electrochemistry is that truly elementary electron-transfer reactions always involve the exchange of one electron, therefore, an overall process involving a change of n electrons must involve n distinct electron-transfer steps. It is highly desirable to resolve multiple-step electron transfer reactions into each electron transfer step. The electrochemical behaviors of coenzyme Q0 and methylene-bridged Bis-coenzyme Q0 were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry in nonaqueous dichloromethane containing 0.15 mol·L-1 Bu4NClO4 as the supporting electrolyte. The redox reaction of coenzyme Q0 is well described as two chemically reversible …

Density Functional Theory Study On The Structures Of Solvent-Ion In The Electrolyte Of Lithium Ion Battery, Li-Dan Xing, Ru Yang, Xian-Wen Tang, Wen-Na Huang, Qi-Feng Liu, Qi-Peng Yu, Wei-Shan Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this work, the possible structures of solvent-ion complex, resulting from the electrostatic interaction in the propylene carbonate (PC) base electrolyte of lithium ion battery, have been investigated using the density functional theory. The calculated results show that the structure of solvent-ion complex depends on the solvent number. In the PC base electrolyte, maximum number of PC solvents that coexist in the Li+-solvent sheath is four. Additionally, the salt anion exists in a complex with the positively charged alkyl group of PC rather than in a free state. The calculated results give a good explanation to the reported …

Obesity is a major health problem in the USA, especially in minority populations over the age of 60 years, and the aging process can cause adverse effects on physical function. Previous research has shown that Tai Chi, resistance training (RT), and diet result in overall health improvements. However, the combination of these specific interventions has yet to be translated to obese olderwomen in an urban setting. The purpose of this studywas to examine a combined intervention on the primary outcomes of physical function and body composition. Using a nonrandomized design, 26 obese women (65.2 ± 8.1 years) completed a 12-week intervention; participants …

Force Chains As The Link Between Particle And Bulk Friction Angles In Granular Material, Adam M. Booth, Ryan Hurley, Michael P. Lamb, José E. Andrade Dec 2014

Force Chains As The Link Between Particle And Bulk Friction Angles In Granular Material, Adam M. Booth, Ryan Hurley, Michael P. Lamb, José E. Andrade

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

From sediment transport in rivers to landslides, predictions of granular motion rely on a Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion parameterized by a friction angle. Measured friction angles are generally large for single grains, smaller for large numbers of grains, and no theory exists for intermediate numbers of grains. We propose that a continuum of friction angles exists between single-grain and bulk friction angles due to grain-to-grain force chains. Physical experiments, probabilistic modeling, and discrete element modeling demonstrate that friction angles decrease by up to 15° as the number of potentially mobile grains increases from 1 to ~20. Decreased stability occurs as longer …

Forall X: An Introduction To Formal Logic 1.30, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Books

In formal logic, sentences and arguments in English are translated into mathematical languages with well-defined properties. If all goes well, properties of the argument that were hard to discern become clearer. This book covers translation, formal semantics, and proof theory for both sentential logic and quantified logic. Each chapter contains practice exercises; solutions to selected exercises appear in an appendix.

Multi-Objective Trajectory Optimization Of A Hypersonic Reconnaissance Vehicle With Temperature Constraints, Tadeusz J. Masternak Dec 2014

Multi-Objective Trajectory Optimization Of A Hypersonic Reconnaissance Vehicle With Temperature Constraints, Tadeusz J. Masternak

Theses and Dissertations

Temperature-constrained optimal trajectories for a scramjet-based hypersonic reconnaissance vehicle were generated by developing an optimal control formulation and solving it using a variable order Gauss-Radau quadrature collocation method. The vehicle was assumed to be an air-breathing reconnaissance aircraft that has specified takeoff/landing locations, airborne refueling constraints, specified no-fly zones, and specified targets for sensor data collections. The aircraft model included fight dynamics, aerodynamics, and thermal constraints. This model was incorporated into an optimal control formulation that includes constraints on both the vehicle as well as mission parameters, such as avoidance of no-fly zones and coverage of high-value targets. Optimal trajectories …

Cloud-Induced Uncertainty For Visual Navigation, Alyssa N. Gutierrez Dec 2014

Cloud-Induced Uncertainty For Visual Navigation, Alyssa N. Gutierrez

Theses and Dissertations

This research addresses the numerical distortion of features due to the presence of clouds in an image. The research aims to quantify the probability of a mismatch between two features in a single image, which will describe the likelihood that a visual navigation system incorrectly tracks a feature throughout an image sequence, leading to position miscalculations. First, an algorithm is developed for calculating transparency of clouds in images at the pixel level. The algorithm determines transparency based on the distance between each pixel color and the average pixel color of the clouds. The algorithm is used to create a dataset …

Photoelectron Spectroscopic And Computational Study Of Hydrated Pyrimidine Anions, John T. Kelly, Shoujun Xu, Jacob Graham, J. Michael Nilles, Dunja Radisic, Angela M. Buonaugurio, Kit H. Bowen, Nathan I. Hammer, Gregory S. Tschumper Dec 2014

Photoelectron Spectroscopic And Computational Study Of Hydrated Pyrimidine Anions, John T. Kelly, Shoujun Xu, Jacob Graham, J. Michael Nilles, Dunja Radisic, Angela M. Buonaugurio, Kit H. Bowen, Nathan I. Hammer, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The stabilization of the pyrimidine anion by the addition of water molecules is studied experimentally using photoelectron spectroscopy of mass-selected hydrated pyrimidine clusters and computationally using quantum-mechanical electronic structure theory. Although the pyrimidine molecular anion is not observed experimentally, the addition of a single water molecule is sufficient to impart a positive electron affinity. The sequential hydration data have been used to extrapolate to -0.22 eV for the electron affinity of neutral pyrimidine, which agrees very well with previous observations. These results for pyrimidine are consistent with previous studies of the hydrated cluster anions of uridine, cytidine, thymine, adenine, uracil, …

Potential Energy Curves And Associated Line Shape Of Alkali-Metal And Noble-Gas Interactions, Larry A. Blank

Theses and Dissertations

Recent interest in optically-pumped alkali laser systems has prompted this study into the binary interaction potentials between species of alkali-metal and rare-gas atoms and the effects of the collision of these species on the alkali-metal atom absorption spectrum. Special attention is placed on the relationship of the interaction potentials and the resulting line shape. The X2Σ+1/2, A2π1/2, A2π3/2, and B2Σ+1/2 potential energy curves and associated dipole matrix elements are computed for M+ Ng at the spin-orbit multi-reference configuration interaction level, where M = …

Characterizing And Managing Intrusion Detection System (Ids) Alerts With Multi-Server/Multi-Priority Queuing Theory, Christopher C. Olsen Dec 2014

Characterizing And Managing Intrusion Detection System (Ids) Alerts With Multi-Server/Multi-Priority Queuing Theory, Christopher C. Olsen

Theses and Dissertations

The DoD sets forth an objective to employ an active cyber defense capability to prevent intrusions onto DoD networks and systems. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are a critical part of network defense architectures, but their alerts can be difficult to manage. This research applies Queuing Theory to the management of IDS alerts, seeking to answer how analysts and priority schemes effect alert processing performance. To characterize the effect of these two variables on queue wait times, a MATLAB simulation was developed to allow parametric analysis under two scenarios. The first varies the number of analysts and the second varies the …

Terrain Referenced Navigation Using Sift Features In Lidar Range-Based Data, Matthew T. Leines Dec 2014

Terrain Referenced Navigation Using Sift Features In Lidar Range-Based Data, Matthew T. Leines

Theses and Dissertations

The use of GNSS in aiding navigation has become widespread in aircraft. The long term accuracy of INS are enhanced by frequent updates of the highly precise position estimations GNSS provide. Unfortunately, operational environments exist where constant signal or the requisite number of satellites are unavailable, significantly degraded, or intentionally denied. This thesis describes a novel algorithm that uses scanning LiDAR range data, computer vision features, and a reference database to generate aircraft position estimations to update drifting INS estimates. The algorithm uses a single calibrated scanning LiDAR to sample the range and angle to the ground as an aircraft …

Rainich-Type Conditions For Perfect Fluid Spacetimes, Dionisios Krongos, Charles G. Torre Dec 2014

Rainich-Type Conditions For Perfect Fluid Spacetimes, Dionisios Krongos, Charles G. Torre

Research Vignettes

In this worksheet we describe and illustrate a relatively simple set of new Rainich-type conditions on an n-dimensional spacetime which are necessary and sufficient for it to define a perfect fluid solution of the Einstein field equations. Procedures are provided which implement these Rainich-type conditions and which reconstruct the perfect fluid from the metric. These results provide an example of the idea of geometrization of matter fields in general relativity, which is a purely geometrical characterization of matter fields via the Einstein field equations.

The World Values (WVS) and European Values Survey (EVS) are used to compare individual tax morale in 1999, 2006 and 2011. An ordered probit regression model is applied to study the effects of socio-demographic and institutional variables on individual tax morale. A new variable for employment sector that appeared in 2006 and 2011 values surveys is included in our model. The probit regression results revealed significant coefficients for income scale and the employment sector variables with negative marginal effects on tax …

The Impact Of Independent Directors On The Cash Conversion Cycle Of American Manufacturing Firms, John Obradovich, Amarjit Gill, Nahum Biger Dec 2014

The Impact Of Independent Directors On The Cash Conversion Cycle Of American Manufacturing Firms, John Obradovich, Amarjit Gill, Nahum Biger

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study examined the impact of independent directors on the cash conversion cycle of American manufacturing firms. A sample of 189 American manufacturing firms listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for a period of five years (from 2009–2013) was used. The findings indicate that the presence of independent directors on the board of directors shortens the inventory period and cash conversion cycle of manufacturing firms. The study contributes to the literature on the factors that shorten the cash conversion cycle of the firm. The results may be used by financial managers and operations managers.

Discrete Energies Of A Weakly Outcoupled Atom Laser Beam Outside The Bose–Einstein Condensate Region, Teguh Budi Prayitno Dec 2014

Discrete Energies Of A Weakly Outcoupled Atom Laser Beam Outside The Bose–Einstein Condensate Region, Teguh Budi Prayitno

Makara Journal of Science

We consider the possibility of a discrete set of energies of a weakly outcoupled atom laser beam to the homogeneous Schrödinger equation with anisotropic harmonic trap in Cartesian coordinates outside the Bose–Einstein condensate region. This treatment is used because working in the cylindrical coordinates is not really possible, even though we implement the cigar-shaped trap case. The Schrödinger equation appears to replace a set of two-coupled Gross– Pitaevskii equations by enabling the weak-coupling assumption. This atom laser can be produced in a simple way that only involves extracting the atoms in a condensate from by using the radio frequency field. …

Real-Time Kinetic Studies Of Bacillus Subtilis Oxalate Decarboxylase And Ceriporiopsis Subvermispora Oxalate Oxidase Using Luminescent Oxygen Sensor, Laura Molina, Thomas Goodall, Umar Twahir, Ellen W. Moomaw

Faculty Articles

Oxalate decarboxylase (OxDC), an enzyme of the bicupin superfamily, catalyzes the decomposition of oxalate into carbon dioxide and formate at an optimal pH of 4.3 in the presence of oxygen. However, about 0.2% of all reactions occur through an oxidase mechanism that consumes oxygen while producing two equivalents of carbon dioxide and one equivalent of hydrogen peroxide. The kinetics of oxidase activity were studied by measuring the consumption of dissolved oxygen over time using a luminescent oxygen sensor. We describe the implementation of and improvements to the oxygen consumption assay. The oxidase activity of wild type OxDC was compared to …

Induction Of Callose Deposition In Tobacco (Nicotiana Tabacum) By Bacterial Lipopolysaccharide Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Tabaci And Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Glycinea, Pipit Marianingsih, Andi Salamah, Yuki Ichinose

Makara Journal of Science

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a major component of outer-membrane gram-negative bacteria, and it can act as a Pathogen-Associated Molecular Pattern (PAMP) for perception of pathogens by plants. LPS can be recognized by plants, triggering certain plant defense-related responses, including callose deposition. This study investigated induction of callose deposition by bacterial LPS in tobacco. Tobacco leaves were infiltrated with 400 µg/mL and 800 µg/mL LPS extracted from Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci (Pta) and Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea (Pgl) and incubated for 24 h or 48 h. To detect callose deposition, tobacco leaves were cleared in lactophenol solution, stained with aniline blue, and …

Immune monitoring of functional responses is a fundamental parameter to establish correlates of protection in clinical trials evaluating vaccines and therapies to boost antigen-specific responses. The IFNg ELISPOT assay is a well-standardized and validated method for the determination of functional IFNg-producing T-cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC); however, its performance greatly depends on the quality and integrity of the cryopreserved PBMC. Here, we investigate the effect of overnight (ON) resting of the PBMC on the detection of CD8-restricted peptide-specific responses by IFNg ELISPOT. The study used PBMC from healthy donors to evaluate the CD8 T-cell response to five pooled …

A Structured Reality, Jeremy Berke Dec 2014

A Structured Reality, Jeremy Berke

Theses

Science has become an arbiter of truth in today's society. For example, think of how people say "It's a scientific fact" to imply that their position is infallible. As such, we should understand what science can tell about the universe. In this thesis I argue that science is telling us about the structure of reality, and that science only illuminates the relations among things, and not the things themselves.

A Sustainable Design Method Acting As An Innovation Tool, Jeremy Faludi Dec 2014

A Sustainable Design Method Acting As An Innovation Tool, Jeremy Faludi

Dartmouth Scholarship

Product companies generally see sustainability as a burden limiting their design process, similar to cost or safety limits. A method for sustainable design was created, attempting to turn sustainability from a burden into an innovation tool with inherent business value. The method combines creative whole-systems thinking with quantitative sustainability metrics. It facilitates innovation by the creation of visual whole-system maps that encourage more thorough and more radical brainstorming. It facilitates sustainability by using quantitative measurements, such as lifecycle assessment or point-based certification systems, to set priorities and choose final designs. The method has been anecdotally tested in classes at four …

Electron Parallel Closures For Arbitrary Collisionality, Jeong-Young Ji, Eric D. Held Dec 2014

Electron Parallel Closures For Arbitrary Collisionality, Jeong-Young Ji, Eric D. Held

All Physics Faculty Publications

Electron parallel closures for heat flow, viscosity, and friction force are expressed as kernel-weighted integrals of thermodynamic drives, the temperature gradient, relative electron-ion flow velocity, and flow-velocity gradient. Simple, fitted kernel functions are obtained for arbitrary collisionality from the 6400 moment solution and the asymptotic behavior in the collisionless limit. The fitted kernels circumvent having to solve higher order moment equations in order to close the electron fluid equations. For this reason, the electron parallel closures provide a useful and general tool for theoretical and computational models of astrophysical and laboratory plasmas.
