Not All Feminist Ideas Are Equal: Anti-Capitalist Feminism And Female Complicity, Giuliana Monteverde
Not All Feminist Ideas Are Equal: Anti-Capitalist Feminism And Female Complicity, Giuliana Monteverde
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper advocates a more explicit feminist discussion of female complicity by demonstrating that existing discourses on women’s participation in patriarchal practices are inadequate. By looking at two contemporary anti-capitalist feminist texts—One Dimensional Woman by Nina Power and Meat Market: Female Flesh under Capitalism by Laurie Penny—I show that these feminists acknowledge the disrupted sex binary, but have not produced texts that reflect this understanding. Whilst these authors admirably concern themselves with structural reasons for inequality—rather than blaming individual women—their treatment of complicit women is wavering. They are scornful of powerful American Republican women and of ‘fun’ feminists, but …
You Are What You (M)Eat: Explorations Of Meat-Eating, Masculinity And Masquerade, Amy Calvert
You Are What You (M)Eat: Explorations Of Meat-Eating, Masculinity And Masquerade, Amy Calvert
Journal of International Women's Studies
Food consumption is frequently linked to identity and to who we are as individuals, which I explore through the analysis of the US reality television series Man V. Food. Through close readings of various scenes, I look at representations of hegemonic masculine performance, and the sexualisation of women and meat. In light of my analysis, I argue that the show is both post-feminist and part of a wider backlash against feminist action. Man V. Food is analysed in consideration of the wider phenomena of masculine crisis and backlash against various social movements, specifically recent feminist and vegetarian/vegan movements. This …
Cross-Gender Casting As Feminist Interventions In The Staging Of Early Modern Plays, Gemma Miller
Cross-Gender Casting As Feminist Interventions In The Staging Of Early Modern Plays, Gemma Miller
Journal of International Women's Studies
This essay explores cross-gender casting of Renaissance canonical texts in modern British theatrical institutions as an act of feminist activism. Reversing early modern all-male theatrical practices, female-male re-gendering can not only interrogate the misogyny immanent in the works themselves, but also expose the ideological structures that continue to collude with these values on the contemporary stage and in society more generally. Through a comparative analysis of all-female productions such as Julius Caesar (dir. by Phyllida Lloyd, Donmar Warehouse, 2012-13) and selective cross-gendering, as exemplified in Edward II, (dir. by Joe Hill-Gibbins, The National Theatre, 2013), I argue that cross-gender …

Seren Taun Between Hegemony And Culture Industry; Reading A Sundanese Ritual Of Harvest In Cigugur, West Java, Lilawati Kurnia
Seren Taun Between Hegemony And Culture Industry; Reading A Sundanese Ritual Of Harvest In Cigugur, West Java, Lilawati Kurnia
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Seren Taun is a ritual ceremony and celebration, which is practiced in West Java by the Sundanese. It is similar to Thanksgiving in many countries. The village Cigugur, located 3 km west of Kuningan, is the focus of the paper, because the Seren Taun celebration there has been a major event and received a lot of attention from the media, government, and scholars. Many non-Javanese traditional celebrations were repressed during the Suharto era and traditional beliefs were either also repressed or co-opted into one of the five official religions. During the post-Suharto era, the spirit of reformation has brought diversity …
Deconstructing The Rhetoric Of Fear In Post 9/11 Young Adult Literature, Ronald Dean Straight
Deconstructing The Rhetoric Of Fear In Post 9/11 Young Adult Literature, Ronald Dean Straight
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This study demonstrates how M.T. Anderson's "Feed" (2002), Scott Westerfeld's "Uglies" (2006), and Veronica Roth's "Divergent" (2011) offer young adult readers alternative messages through tropes and rhetorical devices within a mediated reality. The outcome of these messages offers mixed messages about rebellion and conformity to young adults living in a post 9/11 global community. The development of this message begins with teens in "Feed" exploring a dystopian future where society is tied together through technology that eliminates boundaries. The teens within the story explore a world, for a week, where those boundaries are reestablished due to an act of terror, …

Is Ancestor Veneration The Most Universal Of All World Religions? A Critique Of Modernist Cosmological Bias, Thomas Reuter
Is Ancestor Veneration The Most Universal Of All World Religions? A Critique Of Modernist Cosmological Bias, Thomas Reuter
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Research by anthropologists engaged with the Comparative Austronesia Project (Australian National University) has amassed an enormous data set for ethnological comparison between the religions of Austronesian-speaking societies, a language group to which nearly all Indonesian societies also belong. Comparative analysis reveals that ancestor veneration is a key-shared feature among "Austronesian" religious cosmologies; a feature that also resonates strongly with the ancestor-focused religions characteristic of East Asia. Characteristically, the religions of Austronesian-speaking societies focus on the core idea of a sacred time and place of ancestral origin and the continuous flow of life that is issuing forth from this source. Present-day …
Pragmatism, Identity, And The State; How The Nuaulu Of Seram Have Reinvented Their Beliefs And Practices As "Religion", Roy Ellen
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The Dutch colonial state categorized animists and ancestor-worshippers and inscribed them into written records in ways that have had long-term effects. The immediate post-independence period in Maluku, despite early political turmoil, settled down to a kind of stability under the New Order, the paradoxical outcome of which was both gradual integration of Nuaulu into a wider political and cultural consensus and conditions favouring economic change that undermined that consensus. The new policies of reformasi after 1998 presented further opportunities for Nuaulu to engage with the state in ways that promoted their interests. The opportunities were short-lived, however, given the implosive …

Following The Faith Of The Father; Sayyid 'Uthm N'S Son Ya Y On Mosque Etiquette, E. P. Wieringa
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The Dal 'il al-n shid 'an a k m al-wal 'im f -l-mas jid (Arguments of the Seeker for Legal Judgements concerning Festive Meals in Mosques) is a short tract, written in 1938 in Malay in Arabic script by Ya y b. 'Uthm n b. 'AbdAll h, none other than a son of the renowned Batavian muft Sayyid 'Uthm n (1822-1914). Protesting against the (in his view) bid'a (unauthorized religious innovation) () of organizing festive meals in mosques, he felt it his duty to try to stop his co-religionists from doing wrong. Not being a theologian himself, his pamphlet is …
The Reformasi Of Ayu Utami; Attacking The Monopoly Of The Great Religions, Karel Steenbrink
The Reformasi Of Ayu Utami; Attacking The Monopoly Of The Great Religions, Karel Steenbrink
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In eight novels, Ayu Utami has presented critical attacks on doctrines and practices of the major religions in Indonesia. The two books, that describe the spiritual struggle of the Catholic priest Saman (1998-2002), call for a religion that is more active in the political arena, but leaves sexual rules to the individual people. The novel Bilangan Fu (2008) condemns the monopoly of the great religions in favour of local and individual spirituality. This is developed in a series of novels of which two more have already appeared. A third cycle of three more or less autobiographic novels (2003-2013) sketch her …
Southeast Asia In The Ancient Indian Ocean World; Combining Historical Linguistic And Archaeological Approaches, Tom G. Hoogervorst
Southeast Asia In The Ancient Indian Ocean World; Combining Historical Linguistic And Archaeological Approaches, Tom G. Hoogervorst
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This PhD dissertation examines the role of insular Southeast Asia in the trans-regional networks of maritime trade that shaped the history of Indian Ocean. The work brings together data and approaches from archaeology, historical linguistics and other disciplines, proposing a reconstruction of cultural and linguistic contact between Southeast Asia and its maritime neighbours to the west in order to advance our historical understanding of this part of the world. Numerous biological, commercial and technical items are examined. The study underlines that the analysis of lexical data is one of the strongest tools to detect and analyse contact between two or …

Teaching With The End In Mind: A Teacher's Life History As A Legacy Of Educational Leaders, Daryl Adam Ward
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the life history of a female teacher by examining her beliefs about leaving a teaching legacy and by analyzing the narratives of four educational leaders as they reflect on the generative behaviors of this teacher. The research questions guiding this study were: (a) What elements of this teacher's life history contributed to creating a legacy of educational leaders? (b) What are the perspectives of the educational leaders impacted by this teacher as they relate to crafting an educational legacy? (c) How do the life stories of the teacher and educational leaders intersect …

Blue Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: A Cross Cultural Study On Color Perception And Memory, Mark Douglas Lowry
Blue Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: A Cross Cultural Study On Color Perception And Memory, Mark Douglas Lowry
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
According the linguistic relativity hypothesis, the language one speaks affects how one thinks. Because languages differ in how they categorize color, linguistic relativity has often been tested by conducting experiments on color perception and memory. This study examines the linguistic relativity hypothesis using ecologically valid stimuli: pictures of eyes. Because Russian-speakers are more likely to describe blue/grey eyes as grey, whereas English speakers are more likely to describe them as blue, English and Russian participants were asked to match the overall color of blue eyes to a color scale. There were three conditions. In the first condition (perception), participants saw …
Reading A Quaker's Book: Elizabeth Ashbridge's Testimony Of Quaker Literary Theory, Michele L. Tarter
Reading A Quaker's Book: Elizabeth Ashbridge's Testimony Of Quaker Literary Theory, Michele L. Tarter
Quaker Studies
Elizabeth Ash bridge offers one of the most striking transatlantic spiritual autobiographies of the eighteenth century. While historians and scholars alike have given careful attention to this now-canonical text, no one to date has yet positioned this narrative in the context of the transatlantic Friends' unique literary traditions. Turning to the first generation of Friends, who also cal led themselves 'The Publishers of Truth' , this essay explores the Quakers' mystical relationship to language, prophecy and writing, and their subsequent creation of a New Word. I trace how the Friends created their own literary theory, locating the written word as …

Age And Gender Recognition For Speech Applications Based On Support Vector Machines, Hasan Erokyar
Age And Gender Recognition For Speech Applications Based On Support Vector Machines, Hasan Erokyar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Automatic age and gender recognition for speech applications is very important for a number of reasons. One of the reasons is that it can improve human-machine interaction. For example, the advertisements can be specialized based on the age and the gender of the person on the phone. It also can help identify suspects in criminal cases or at least it can minimize the number of suspects. Some other uses of this system can be applied for adaptation of waiting queue music where a different type of music can be played according to the person's age and gender. And also using …

Gestural And Symbolic Development Among Apes And Humans: Support For A Multimodal Theory Of Language Evolution, Kristen Gillespie-Lynch, Patricia M. Greenfield, Heidi Lyn, Sue Savage-Rumbaugh
Publications and Research
What are the implications of similarities and differences in the gestural and symbolic development of apes and humans? This focused review uses as a starting point our recent study that provided evidence that gesture supported the symbolic development of a chimpanzee, a bonobo, and a human child reared in language-enriched environments at comparable stages of communicative development. These three species constitute a complete clade, species possessing a common immediate ancestor. Communicative behaviors observed among all species in a clade are likely to have been present in the common ancestor. Similarities in the form and function of many gestures produced by the …

The Relative Effects Of Logistics, Coordination And Human Resource On Humanitarian Aid And Disaster Relief Mission Performance, Aida Idris, Saiful Nizam Che Soh
The South East Asian Journal of Management
Most studies on humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR) missions suggest that the quality of logistics, coordination and human resource management will affect their performance. However, studies in developing countries are mainly conceptual and lack the necessary empirical evidence to support these contentions. The current paper thereby aimed to fill this knowledge gap by statistically examining the effects of the abovementioned factors on such missions. Focusing on the Malaysian army due to its extensive experience in HADR operations, the paper opted for a quantitative approach to allow for a more objective analysis of the issues. The results show that there …
