Italian Immigration In The United States, Giuseppe Piccoli Jan 2014

Italian Immigration In The United States, Giuseppe Piccoli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is a historical research that used content analysis of secondary sources (newspapers, magazines, literature, movies and sociological studies) in order to describe Italian immigration in America. The research is focused on Italian-American communities in the areas of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston.

Between 1880 and 1920, Italian-Americans became one of the largest ethnic groups in the United States. For a long period, they faced discrimination and lived at the edge of the American society. Education, immigration and urban policies influenced the social structure of the Italian communities. Later, second generation immigrants started writing books and making …

Effects Of Semantic Feature Analysis+Multimodal Communication Program For Word Retrieval And Switching Behavior In Primary Progressive Aphasia, Alicia M. Rebstock Jan 2014

Effects Of Semantic Feature Analysis+Multimodal Communication Program For Word Retrieval And Switching Behavior In Primary Progressive Aphasia, Alicia M. Rebstock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by language and cognitive decline. Word retrieval deficits are the most common PPA symptom, and contribute to impaired verbal expression. Intense semantic interventions show promise for improving word retrieval in people with PPA. Additionally, people with PPA may learn to use alternative communication modalities when they are unable to retrieve a word. However, executive function impairments can cause people to struggle to switch among modalities to repair communication breakdowns. This study examined the effects of a combined semantic feature analysis and multimodal communication program (SFA+MCP) on word retrieval accuracy and switching …

Nietzsche And Comedy: Provocative Laughter Amidst A Tragic Philosophy, Michael C. Rudar Jan 2014

Nietzsche And Comedy: Provocative Laughter Amidst A Tragic Philosophy, Michael C. Rudar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Friedrich Nietzsche is well known as the philosopher of the tragic view of life. Because we are part of the world of becoming the tragic view maintains that human beings are given over to certain limits that we cannot transcend. These include ourselves as finite beings, the recognition that noumenal knowledge is not possible and, because we are subject to the flux of existence, that life can be both painful and destructive. However, for Nietzsche the tragic view of life ought not result in humorless resignation. Just as he appeals to ancient Greek tragedy to demonstrate how the ancients remained …

Graduate Students' Perception Of Curriculum-Based Efficacy Of The Acquisition Of Multicultural Counseling Skills, Demond Ethridge Bledsoe Jan 2014

Graduate Students' Perception Of Curriculum-Based Efficacy Of The Acquisition Of Multicultural Counseling Skills, Demond Ethridge Bledsoe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States is undergoing a period in which the demographics of the population are shifting drastically. The profession of counseling is tasked with providing services to diverse groups of clients, many of whom may have experienced racism, prejudice, and oppression as a result of their cultural or ethnic identity. Literature suggests that cultural and ethnic minority clients have poorer outcomes than their majority counterparts, and a significant factor in gaining positive treatment outcomes is the multicultural skill development in the clinician; however, little research focusing on effective delivery methods for multicultural skill development in counselor trainees has been conducted. …

Communication And Response-Ability: Levinas And Kierkegaard In Conversation, Beth A. Walter Jan 2014

Communication And Response-Ability: Levinas And Kierkegaard In Conversation, Beth A. Walter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project contends that hope for ethical communication in a postmodern age lies in the ability to rethink ethics in terms of "existential pathos." To that end, this study locates communicative responsibility in the responsive element of the self-other relation by relying primarily on the work of the twentieth-century Lithuanian-born French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas. I maintain that Levinas's disruption of the philosophical tradition informs a communication ethic comprised of dialectical, dialogical, and rhetorical modes of interpersonal interaction that are fundamentally rooted in an existential understanding of human striving. Further, I assert that these dialectical, dialogical and rhetorical components are best …

The Underrepresentation Of Black Students In Advanced Placement Classes: A Local Response To A National Issue, Tia Wanzo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A pertinent educational issue in our country is the black and white achievement gap. One specific program that has been developed and implemented over the last several years in an effort to provide strong academic curriculum and raise student achievement, including minority student achievement, is the College Board's advanced placement (AP) Program. The AP Program courses are widely recognized as providing students with academically challenging curriculum, facilitating their acceptance to colleges and supporting their preparation for post-secondary education. The emphasis of this work relates to the concern that although the AP program has been in existence for decades and is …

Check, Pleas: Toward A Jurisprudence Of Defense Ethics In Plea Bargaining, Hadar Aviram, Deanna Dyer, S. C. Thomas Jan 2014

Check, Pleas: Toward A Jurisprudence Of Defense Ethics In Plea Bargaining, Hadar Aviram, Deanna Dyer, S. C. Thomas

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

After years of hesitation to acknowledge instances of ineffective assistance of counsel under the standard set in Strickland v. Washington (1984), the Supreme Court has addressed it head-on in the context of pleabargaining. In three recent cases-Padilla v. Kentucky (2010), Lafler v. Cooper (2012), and Missouri v. Frye (2012)-the Court attempted to define defense counsel professionalism and fashion remedies for lack thereof. But these cases are far from the first effort to regulate the quality of counsel in plea bargaining.

The Article starts by using insights from classic courtroom ethnography to explicate the main issues that influence defense practices in …

From Data To Creation Of Meaning Part Ii: Data Librarian As Translator, Kristin Partlo Jan 2014

From Data To Creation Of Meaning Part Ii: Data Librarian As Translator, Kristin Partlo

Staff and Faculty Work

While institutions, methodology and geography all present barriers for communication and development of infrastructure, sometimes the greatest barriers may be in reaching not across the world but across the hallway. Engaging in the work of unified infrastructure requires finding language that bridges modes of inquiry and meaning, so that all participants see their place in the whole. This work of finding shared language involves translation at many levels. Data librarians know that not everyone means the same thing by ‘data’ and increasingly they seek language that spans the practices of social science, sciences, humanities, and performing arts. This paper aims …

Bilingual Narrative Assessment: Evaluation Of The Kindergarten Language Benchmark Assessment In Native Spanish-Speaking Children, Rebecca Hunt Jan 2014

Bilingual Narrative Assessment: Evaluation Of The Kindergarten Language Benchmark Assessment In Native Spanish-Speaking Children, Rebecca Hunt

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Kindergarten Language Benchmark Assessment (KLBA) (Preschern & Konikoff, 2013) in identifying at risk narrative abilities in English Language Learners (ELLs) whose primary language is Spanish, as well as in monolingual English speakers. In addition, the study compared the effectiveness of the KLBA scoring system with the established measure of high point analysis for Spanish ELLs, and examined the performance of English monolinguals on the same assessment. The KLBA was administered in September, and again in January. The children's narratives were scored using the KLBA measure, transcribed, and …

Persecution Of Particular Social Groups And The Much Bigger Immigration Picture, R. George Wright Jan 2014

Persecution Of Particular Social Groups And The Much Bigger Immigration Picture, R. George Wright

Cleveland State Law Review

Often, aliens seek what is called discretionary asylum, which requires that they show “persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.” While virtually every word of this requirement is of doubtful meaning and scope, the focus of this Article will be on the idea of persecution based specifically on “membership” in a particular group. Defining, for practical purposes, the idea of a “particular social group” has proven to be remarkably difficult, as is evidenced by widespread official illogic and dubious public policy.

A Review Of 'Spaces Of Solidarity: Karen Identity In The Thai-Burma Borderlands' By Rachel Sharples, Heather Maclachlan Jan 2014

A Review Of 'Spaces Of Solidarity: Karen Identity In The Thai-Burma Borderlands' By Rachel Sharples, Heather Maclachlan

Department of Music Faculty Publications

In 1949, civil war broke out in the newly independent country then known as Burma, and now known as Myanmar. The war, which continues to this day, pits the central government (made up mostly of Burmans) against dozens of ethnic minority insurgent groups. One of the largest and most militarily successful of these ethnic insurgent groups is the Karen National Liberation Army, which contests the state army in southeastern Burma/Myanmar in areas of Karen State abutting the border with Thailand. The conflict has created tremendous hardship for civilians in the area, who speak mutually unintelligible Karennic languages and who variously …

Montana's Rural Version Of The School-To-Prison Pipeline School Discipline And Tragedy On American Indian Reservations, Melina Angelos Healey Jan 2014

Montana's Rural Version Of The School-To-Prison Pipeline School Discipline And Tragedy On American Indian Reservations, Melina Angelos Healey

Montana Law Review

American Indian1 adolescents in Montana are caught in a school-toprison pipeline. They are plagued with low academic achievement, high dropout, suspension and expulsion rates, and disproportionate contact with the juvenile and criminal justice systems. While these are typical of the school-to-prison phenomenon as it also appears in poor minority communities across the country, the rates and the disproportion for American Indians in Montana are particularly acute.2 Even more disturbing, many American Indian students in Montana are also the victims of another heartbreaking trend related to the school-to-prison pipeline—alarming levels of adolescent suicides and self-harm. The tragic situation of these children …

“Russification” Of “Soft Power”: Transformation Of A Concept, Yelena Osipova Jan 2014

“Russification” Of “Soft Power”: Transformation Of A Concept, Yelena Osipova

Exchange: The Journal of Public Diplomacy

Soft power has become a popular foreign policy concept adopted by many different governments around the world, despite its lack of depth or broad applicability. The Russian government is among those eager adopters and has, over time, reconceptualized and transformed the concept to make it fit the Russian worldview and specific foreign policy objectives. The paper provides a critical examination of soft power as presented in the Russian official and academic discourse, and examines some of the key strategies serving as foundation for the Russian approach. The paper concludes that according to the current official interpretation of the concept, the …

Perceptions Of Climate Change And Vulnerability In Upper Svaneti, South Caucasus, Georgia, Peter Alexandrovich Bordokoff

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Incorporating localized perceptions of climatic impacts to livelihoods and traditions is critical to shaping effective adaptive climate change and disaster risk reduction strategies in the Greater Caucasus Mountains of Georgia. This study uses a phenomenological research framework to investigate the lived experience of climate and the associated impacts of its change in Upper Svaneti. In addition, a vulnerability assessment examines the social and environmental aspects of disasters, including localized perceptions. Results are drawn from eight months of field research conducted from 2012-2013. Multiple in-depth qualitative methods were implemented to generate rich descriptive data, giving way to the roles that environmental …

Dual Language Learners In Head Start: Examining Teaching Strategies That Promote English Language Development, Dawn Hendricks

Theses and Dissertations

There were dual purposes of this exploratory, case study. The first purpose was to investigate and describe the teaching strategies of six Head Start teachers within one program in Oregon whose dual language learners had shown gains of at least three levels in receptive and expressive English language development, as determined by their assessment ratings in Teaching Strategies GOLD Assessment System. The second purpose was to identify what, if any, professional development strategies and resources have been beneficial to those teachers in promoting English language development for children who are dual language learners. This qualitative study utilized three data collection …

Reflections On Home Concrete, Steve R. Johnson Jan 2014

Reflections On Home Concrete, Steve R. Johnson

Scholarly Publications

Positive statutory law – principally the Internal Revenue Coe – is the most important source of tax rules. Despite its volume, however, the Code contains many gaps. Tax regulations promulgated by the Department of the Treasury are the principal vehicles for filling the most important gaps.

When consistent with the Code and issued pursuant to proper procedures, Treasure Regulations have the force of law. The validity of Treasury Regulations has been a major battleground in contemporary tax litigation. In the last five years alone, the issue has arisen in high profile cases such as Swallows, Mannella, Lantz, Mayo, Dominion Resources, …

The Development Of Personal Status Law In Jordan & Iraq, Kelsey Cherland Jan 2014

The Development Of Personal Status Law In Jordan & Iraq, Kelsey Cherland

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores the historical development of personal status law, which governs a person’s marriage, divorce, and custody rights. It is significant because it is part of a framework that has defined women’s rights for centuries. I will argue that personal status law is a patriarchal framework that has been reinforced over time, leading up to the creation of nation-states in the Middle East. As such, this is the “institution” of personal status that will be traced using historical institutionalism theory. In this thesis I will argue that personal status has undergone a critical juncture, or crucial moment of potential …

A Look Into The Latino Experience: The Process Of Identity Formation For Latinos In The United States, Angelica M. Ferreira Jan 2014

A Look Into The Latino Experience: The Process Of Identity Formation For Latinos In The United States, Angelica M. Ferreira

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines the educational acculturation experience of Latinos in the United States (U.S.) and the processes of identity formation. Through the historical Latino experience in the early 20th century, we can see the remaining influences of historical inequality (e.g. exploitation of labor, de jure segregation) through negative perceptions of Latinos. Negative stereotypes and incorrect assumptions presented in society (e.g. media, educational system, and justice system) perpetuate inferiority in comparison to White Americans. In the context of a school environment, Latino children begin to realize they are different. When non-native English speakers enter the classroom, immediate differences in language, cultural …

Islamic Nationalism: Tracing Paradoxes In The Evolution Of The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Henry Johnson Jan 2014

Islamic Nationalism: Tracing Paradoxes In The Evolution Of The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Henry Johnson

CMC Senior Theses

This paper presents a narrative history of Iranian revolutionary ideology and its evolving impact on foreign policy. It looks at this history primary through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, an institution established after the revolution and designed to defend the Islamic political order in Iran as well as oppressed Muslims abroad. The Revolutionary Guard, or Guard for short, became a focal point in the efforts of Iranian revolutionaries to export their ideology and has evolved overtime into a politicized and unconventional military force, often associated in the media with supporting foreign terrorists and militants. This paper argues that the Guard …

Africa Rising: Corruption & Foreign Direct Investment Inflows, Kunaal A. Chande Jan 2014

Africa Rising: Corruption & Foreign Direct Investment Inflows, Kunaal A. Chande

CMC Senior Theses

Using a panel data set spanning from 2005 to 2012 and drawn from 35 Sub-Saharan

African countries, this paper examines the relative impact of corruption on the

inflow of foreign direct investment. This study is motivated by the recent influx of

political and media attention on the African continent that is poised to receive

billions of dollars in investment over the coming years. It is argued in this paper that

there is no significant link between the two variables. There did appear to be a

negative skew meaning higher levels of perceived corruption resulted in less FDI

inflows, while few …

An Introduction To The Cultural Anthropology And Preservation Of The Rio Grande Valley, Margaret E. Dorsey, Miguel Díaz-Barriga Jan 2014

An Introduction To The Cultural Anthropology And Preservation Of The Rio Grande Valley, Margaret E. Dorsey, Miguel Díaz-Barriga

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Anthropology is the study of human behavior and culture, and anthropologists in the United States divide their research into four sub-fields of study: physical anthropology; archaeology; linguistic anthropology; and cultural anthropology. North American anthropology draws its impetus from the foundational work of Franz Boas, a professor at Columbia University who lived along the Arctic Circle on Baffin Island, Canada for one year in the late nineteenth century where he kept copious notes of the language, life ways and customs of the Inuit. The following year, Boas collaborated with several museums conducting fieldwork along the North Pacific Coast setting the tone …

El Uso Del Quechua En El Perú: Una Investigación De Identidad Y Performance Cultural, Theresa A. Renker

Honors Theses and Capstones

Effects Of Clergy Reporting Laws On Child Maltreatment Report Rates, Frank E. Vandervort, Vincent J. Palusci Jan 2014

Effects Of Clergy Reporting Laws On Child Maltreatment Report Rates, Frank E. Vandervort, Vincent J. Palusci

Articles

Child maltreatment (CM) reporting laws and policies have an important role in the identification, treatment, and prevention of CM in the United States (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [US DHHS], 2012). Abuse by a member of the clergy “is not only a personal and emotional betrayal, but [also] a spiritual betrayal, with secrecy amplified by the unprecedented and systemic cover-up committed by the Church hierarchy” (Coyne, 2011, p. 15). Recent controversies have resulted in the consideration of changes in mandated U.S. reporting laws that include increasing requirements for clergy and extension to additional professions (Freeh, Sporkin, & Sullivan, …

Intellectual Property Geographies, Peter K. Yu Jan 2014

Intellectual Property Geographies, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

Written for a special issue on intellectual property and geography, this article outlines three sets of mismatches that demonstrate the vitality, utility and richness of analyzing intellectual property developments through a geographical lens. The article begins by examining economic geography, focusing on the tensions and conflicts between territorial borders and sub-national innovation (including those relating to obligations under the WTO TRIPS Agreement). This article then examines the oft-found mismatch between political geography and cultural geography. Illustrating this mismatch is the challenge of protecting traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions. The article concludes by exploring the growing mismatch between legal geography …
