Voices Of Experience : The Mental Health Consumer And Psychiatric Survivor Movements And Their Implications For Ethical Clinical Practice, Sophia L. Zucker Jan 2014

Voices Of Experience : The Mental Health Consumer And Psychiatric Survivor Movements And Their Implications For Ethical Clinical Practice, Sophia L. Zucker

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical thesis explores the origins of the modern concept of "mental illness" and traces the development of the mental health consumer and psychiatric survivor movements, modern social justice movements that work to change and/or dismantle the system of oppression that has long denied those labeled mentally ill the right to make basic decisions about their own lives. Working from a critical theoretical frame influenced by historical discourse analysis and post-structuralist theory, the thesis first examines the multiple constructions of madness and mental distress in the Western world since the Middle Ages, suggesting that the current biomedical model of mental …

Exploring Mental Dungeons And Slaying Psychic Dragons : An Exploratory Study, Michael S. Sargent

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study examined the experiences of participants with table-top roleplaying and with the gaming community. Specifically this study asked: In what ways do fantasy play and participation in the role-playing community benefit participants? This study aimed to address the lack of social work literature regarding the emotional and social benefits that roleplaying games provide consumers. Data were collected from interviews with six individuals who regularly engage in tabletop role-playing games. The study asked open ended questions regarding participants' experiences with the role-playing community, thematic and emotional content experienced within the fantasy setting, and benefits participants felt they'd gained from …

Institutional Culture And Hispanic Student Engagement At Hbcus, Robert Louis Canida Jan 2014

Institutional Culture And Hispanic Student Engagement At Hbcus, Robert Louis Canida

Dissertations

This study explores the impact of institutional culture at three North Carolina Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on the extracurricular (non-academic) activities of 15 Hispanic students. Through a cultural ethnographic research approach, this study utilizes the Critical Race and Latino Critical theories as a framework to ascertain if institutional programs and policies are discriminatory, racist, or unfair to Hispanic students. Both theories critically examine how societal norms and values intersect with race and culture. However, Latino Critical Theory recognizes the multifaceted aspects (language, sexuality, identity, or immigration) of the Hispanic student. The fundamental focus remains on the extent to …

"Eating Bitterness" : Mental Health Help-Seeking And Chinese International Students In The United States, Ran Huo

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative exploratory study examines how Chinese international students in the United States, aging from 18 to 30 years old, 1) perceive mental health help-seeking in China, 2) how they compare Chinese and American cultural views of help-seeking, and 3) how cross-cultural experiences may influence their understanding as well as their behavior related to mental health help-seeking. Twelve Chinese international students in Massachusetts and Rhode Island provided narratives through face-to-face interviews. Generally, there was reluctance among Chinese international students to identify their mental health needs, which was revealed from the examination of language use for mental health in Chinese. As …

College Bound : Factors That Influence First Generation College Student Process, Claudia Y. Hernandez Jan 2014

College Bound : Factors That Influence First Generation College Student Process, Claudia Y. Hernandez

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explores the biopsychosocial factors that influence first-generation Latino students in their decision to attend college, including individuals' demographic characteristics, and how first generation Latino college students cope with changes in their environment when away from home. The fact that only one in ten Latino adults between the ages of 18 and 24 have a college degree (Brindis, Driscoll, Biggs, and Valderrama, 2002) is a staggering number that highlights part of the need for this study. Twelve first generation Latino College students residing in California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and New York participated in this research study. They …

Racial Hierarchy And Mental Health Outcomes Among Rich Nations, Jamie D. Daniels Jan 2014

Racial Hierarchy And Mental Health Outcomes Among Rich Nations, Jamie D. Daniels

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study examined the relationship between racial diversity and mental health outcomes among wealthy nations. It hypothesized that status anxieties would be more pronounced in those countries marked by greater diversity—a measure of social stratification or hierarchy. Lower status as measured by class has been shown in numerous studies to predict mental health outcomes, like risk of depression and psychosis for individuals. On a population level research has also found a relationship between income inequality—the degree of distance between the rich and the poor—and mental health outcomes. Regression analyses of the prevalence of mental illness against racial diversity showed no …

Clarissa's Suffering: Theorizing Sympathy And Physical Pain In The Eighteenth Century, Audrey Hungerpiller Jan 2014

Clarissa's Suffering: Theorizing Sympathy And Physical Pain In The Eighteenth Century, Audrey Hungerpiller

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines theories of pain in the eighteenth century, and what it meant to sympathize with the pain of another. I begin briefly with the theories of Descartes and his adherents before focusing on David Hartley and John Locke. Physicians and natural philosophers of the period understood pain as a pure mechanism of the nervous system, confined to the tubelike fibers that run through the body. Naturally everyone feels pain by some means, whether illness or injury, so men ought to be able to sympathize with the afflictions of others. Yet, according to Adam Smith in The Theory of …

The Grouping Of The Germanic Languages: A Critical Review, Michael-Christopher Todd Highlander Jan 2014

The Grouping Of The Germanic Languages: A Critical Review, Michael-Christopher Todd Highlander

Theses and Dissertations

The literature regarding the grouping of the Germanic languages will be reviewed and a potential solution to the problems of the division of the Germanic language will be proposed. This is however quite a complex task. Most of the Germanic languages share a great number of similarities, and individual languages often have features common to more than one group. Old Saxon, Old Low Franconian, and Old English are examples of languages that make the grouping much more complex than it appears on the surface. The grouping Germanic languages has been debated by linguists since the 19th century, and there are …

An Analysis Of Erickson's Concept Of School Legitimacy In Relationship To School Success And Failure, Michael Griggs Jan 2014

An Analysis Of Erickson's Concept Of School Legitimacy In Relationship To School Success And Failure, Michael Griggs

Theses and Dissertations

School legitimacy is the approval of principal and teacher authority that derives from the school community's trust (Erickson, 1987). When clients--the various stakeholders, including parents and students--recognize their school as legitimate, they trust that those in authority will help their economic future, protect their personal identities, and look out for their best interest. The concept of school legitimacy is applied to four case studies that involve poor and minority students to examine its role in a school's success or failure. The dissertation seeks to examine the process for constructing school legitimacy through reviewing literature, case studies, and surveys. Surveys are …

Old English And Old Norse: An Inquiry Into Intelligibility And Categorization Methodology, Eric Martin Gay Jan 2014

Old English And Old Norse: An Inquiry Into Intelligibility And Categorization Methodology, Eric Martin Gay

Theses and Dissertations

To say that the Old English and Old Norse languages have an interesting history with one another is a declaration of utter understatement. So intertwined were these languages and their people that we, some 1,000 years later, are still attempting to discern the extent of their relationship with one another. As new evidence and the reevaluation of old evidence emerges, research in the historical Germanic languages continues to paint a clearer picture. However, the study of possible Old English and Old Norse mutual intelligibility is a subject that is comparatively new within the field, and as such is still exploring …

Teaching To Learn: Tapping The Rich Language Resources Of Three African American Preschool Boys, Virginia Akright Miller Jan 2014

Teaching To Learn: Tapping The Rich Language Resources Of Three African American Preschool Boys, Virginia Akright Miller

Theses and Dissertations

The initial purpose of the study was to better understand the effect of book genre (fiction or informational) and text choice on the spontaneous language production of African American, preschool boys from low SES households. Its methodological approach was action research that consisted of teacher/child book sharing with three participants during one-on-one, 30 minute sessions over a period of 14 weeks. Discussion during these sessions centered on the participants' book choice and were audio recorded. The transcripts of these recordings became case studies that were analyzed for behavioral patterns of both participants and teacher. Discovery of such patterns revealed changes …

Non-Native Speaker Attentional Capacity And The Processing Of English Phrasal Verb Constructions, Aubrey Dillard Jan 2014

Non-Native Speaker Attentional Capacity And The Processing Of English Phrasal Verb Constructions, Aubrey Dillard

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of syntactic and semantic complexity on attention and processing in second language acquisition (SLA) has long been of interest to both practitioners and researchers of SLA. Theoretical models of attention in SLA (Schmidt 1990, Tomlin and Villa 1994, Robinson 1995) have spurred a great deal of empirical research in the field, and VanPatten's (1994, 2004, 2007) work on the effect of attention to form and meaning on comprehension of input has been very influential in the field. From a language processing viewpoint, Clahsen and Felser (2006, 2009) have hypothesized that the different ways in which native and nonnative …

Understanding Destination Choice From A Cultural Distance Perspective, Hongbo Liu Jan 2014

Understanding Destination Choice From A Cultural Distance Perspective, Hongbo Liu

Theses and Dissertations

National cultural distance is an important factor of tourists' destination choice, yet the specific role it plays in destination decision process is not well understood. This paper attempts to fill this gap. Taking potential Chinese outbound tourists as a case, this study tries to explore the impact of perceived cultural distance on tourists' international destination choice through a conditional logit model. Familiarity, geographical distance, past international travel experience and novelty-seeking tendency were examined as moderators of the relationship between perceived cultural distance and destination choice. Results show that tourist are more likely to choose culturally similar countries as destinations; geographical …

Wicked Intense: The Grammaticalization Of Wicked And Other Intensifiers In New Hampshire, Emma M. Brown Jan 2014

Wicked Intense: The Grammaticalization Of Wicked And Other Intensifiers In New Hampshire, Emma M. Brown

Honors Theses and Capstones

This article presents a synchronic study of wicked and other intensifiers in Southern New Hampshire. Two sets of data were collected: one from the social media website Twitter, and the other from spoken casual interviews conducted by students at the University of New Hampshire. In all, more than 9000 intensifiable adjectives and verbs were collected, with rates of 22 and 24 per cent intensification for the Twitter and spoken data, respectively. The first goal of this paper is to show that one intensifier in particular, wicked, is in the process of grammaticalizing through the mechanisms of desemanticization and extension …

An Analysis Of Interpreter-Mediated Healthcare Interactions, Robin Dawson Estrada Jan 2014

An Analysis Of Interpreter-Mediated Healthcare Interactions, Robin Dawson Estrada

Theses and Dissertations

The content and quality of communication between nurse practitioners and patients in primary care encounters contributes to diagnostic decision making, the provision of culturally appropriate interventions, and ultimately may impact health outcomes. In caring for patients with limited English proficiency, the addition of language discordance increases the complexity of the interaction and communication processes and the potential for disparate health outcomes. Most prior research on interpreter-mediated healthcare interactions has focused on accuracy, cost, satisfaction, and role enactment, but there is a lack of systematic research examining the actual interaction processes within the context of primary care clinic visits.

The aim …

Minority Languages For Instruction: A Comparative Study Of Teachers’ Perspectives In Tanzania And Brazil, Jean Antunes Jan 2014

Minority Languages For Instruction: A Comparative Study Of Teachers’ Perspectives In Tanzania And Brazil, Jean Antunes

Master of Education

Research has pointed to the benefits of children learning in their mother tongue, and much has been discussed and done to assert the rights of ethnic minorities toward the use of their language in education. However, it has also been shown that there are instances in which education in the mother tongue is not preferred. This has many implications for the education systems of multilingual countries such as Tanzania and Brazil that have to deal with a multiplicity of languages in the school. Education stakeholders face these issues on a daily basis. In view of these implications this study set …

The Management Of The Thematic Curriculum: A Case Study Of A Public School Head Teacher, Abim District, Uganda, Owiny Charles Dickens Jan 2014

The Management Of The Thematic Curriculum: A Case Study Of A Public School Head Teacher, Abim District, Uganda, Owiny Charles Dickens

Master of Education

Recently, Uganda has been involved in educational reforms, especially in the implementation and management of school curriculum now called, 'the thematic curriculum' This reform was introduced by government as an initiative to promote the goals and objectives of the new curriculum to achieve the national literacy and numeracy standards in primary school education. Despite this reform initiative, literacy and numeracy competences in public primary schools in Uganda have continued to be generally low. The purpose of carrying out this study therefore, was to investigate the management of the new thematic curriculum by a public primary school head teacher in the …

The Rna Newton Polytope And Learnability Of Energy Parameters, Elmirasadat Forouzmand Jan 2014

The Rna Newton Polytope And Learnability Of Energy Parameters, Elmirasadat Forouzmand

Wayne State University Theses

Computational RNA secondary structure prediction has been a topic of much research interest for several decades now. Despite all the progress made in the field, even the state-of-the-art algorithms do not provide satisfying results, and the accuracy of output is limited for all the existent tools. Very complex energy models, different parameter estimation methods, and recent machine learning approaches had not been the answer for this problem. We believe that the first step to achieve results with high quality is to use the energy model with the potential for predicting accurate output. Hence, it is necessary to have a systematic …

Black Existential Philosophy: Truth In Virtue Of Self-Discovery, James B. Haile Jan 2014

Black Existential Philosophy: Truth In Virtue Of Self-Discovery, James B. Haile

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past 20 years, within the discipline of philosophy there has been a burgeoning interest in the fields of Race theory, Africana, and African American philosophy, especially in the scholarship and questions concerning the experience and meaning of black existence; that is, within black existential philosophy. Despite this interest, though, there has yet to be a sustained study of the categories of black existential philosophy nor its concepts--there seems to have been the acceptance of traditional European existential categories and concepts merely applied to the questions of black existence. This work, though, offers a sustained examination of the existential …

These Improvement Science tools will enable educational leaders to begin their STEM improvement effort. Improvement Science uses the theory of Profound Knowledge, which combines …

University Education In A Postmodern Era: Building A Narrative Ethic Of Civil Communication In The Classroom, Jill Dishart Leontiadis Jan 2014

University Education In A Postmodern Era: Building A Narrative Ethic Of Civil Communication In The Classroom, Jill Dishart Leontiadis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project responds to the question: How can educators quell communicative classroom incivilities (CI) that are currently harming teaching and learning? Sources of CI in a postmodern United States university classroom involve: student entitlement, lack of institutional support for a growing contingent faculty, and incongruent values about appropriate classroom communication. Unlike preceding historical time periods that maintained a shared communicative ethic stemming from antiquity to modernity, postmodernity presents an unprecedented challenge to teaching and learning where there can be no assumed shared ethic of appropriate communicative classroom communication. Postmodernity as an age of coexisting and contentious narratives, this project argues …

The Smartpen As A Mediational Tool For Learning Language And Content Areas: The Case Of English Learners In Mainstream Classrooms, Rae Mancilla Jan 2014

The Smartpen As A Mediational Tool For Learning Language And Content Areas: The Case Of English Learners In Mainstream Classrooms, Rae Mancilla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of mobile devices for supporting the instruction of second language (L2) learners is an emerging and rapidly growing area of inquiry. Previous research on mobile assisted language learning (MALL) has concentrated on the development of isolated linguistic skills through a common set of mobile technologies, such as PDAs and iPods, with limited attention given to alternative mobile devices or situations of L2 learning that require the simultaneous learning of language and academic content (Wu, Jim Wu, Chen, Kao, Lin, & Huang, 2012; Viberg & Grönlund, 2012; 2013). In particular, little is understood about how English Learners (ELs) educated …

The Open Class Authorship Attribution Problem: A Comparison Of Mixture-Of-Experts Methods Within The Jgaap Framework, James Orlo Overly Jan 2014

The Open Class Authorship Attribution Problem: A Comparison Of Mixture-Of-Experts Methods Within The Jgaap Framework, James Orlo Overly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, we seek to describe, test, evaluate, and compare methods of open class attribution that utilize multiple unique closed class attributions in a voting framework. By applying statistical techniques to the proportion of closed class attributions indicating individual candidate authors, we seek to determine if the author is present in a set of suspected authors or not. The final answer to an open class attribution problem is either one of the authors in the set of candidate authors or "None of the above." We test nine different methods of open class attribution grouped into three distinct voting paradigms. …

C. S. Lewis And The Premodern Rhetorical Tradition: The Abolition Of Man As Rhetoric And Philosophy Of Education, Nicholas Ryan Pertler Jan 2014

C. S. Lewis And The Premodern Rhetorical Tradition: The Abolition Of Man As Rhetoric And Philosophy Of Education, Nicholas Ryan Pertler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This interpretive project begins with the following question: How does The Abolition of Man by C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) function as a rhetoric and philosophy of education to open up meaningful alternatives to modern education? Although Lewis originally composed and delivered the text as three lectures in response to the felt educational concerns of his age, in its published form The Abolition of Man still offers relevant insight on the topic of education in contemporary times. Scholarship on Lewis has yet to fully appreciate exactly how his educational ideals align with the premodern rhetorical tradition, but this project argues that …
