Place-Names In Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Ethnohistory 61, No. 2 (Spring 2014), Pp. 329-355., Barbara E. Mundy

Art History and Music Faculty Publications

The place-names that residents of the Mexica capital of Tenochtitlan (today Mexico City) gave to their city were both descriptive of topography and commemorative of history. Largely efaced from the Spanish historical register, Mexico City’s Nahuatl place-names were rescued from historical oblivion by José Antonio Alzate in the eighteenth century and again by Alfonso Caso in the twentieth. However, efacement is not equal to extinction, and this article argues for the continued use, even creation, of Nahuatl place-names into the eighteenth century. It suggests that the scholar’s desire to use place-names as an index to a pre-Hispanic past has obscured …

Developing A Program For Pre-Service Teachers Interested In Teaching Young Female Students In Rural Areas Of Developing Countries, Tanya M. Zeitler Jan 2014

Developing A Program For Pre-Service Teachers Interested In Teaching Young Female Students In Rural Areas Of Developing Countries, Tanya M. Zeitler

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This capstone examines how training programs for pre-service teachers interested in teaching children in developing countries could be developed at the California State University (CSU) system level. Currently, there are few programs in place for teachers interested in teaching in developing countries. In order to teach abroad, they need to work for the Peace Corps or teach English in Korea, but training programs for pre-service teachers have not been institutionalized at the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHEs), such as CSU system. Teaching abroad usually creates a stigma for those who teach abroad and return to the United States, for one …

Promoting Understanding Of Special Education Procedural Safeguards Through A Parental Workshop, Alejandra Revilla-Rico Jan 2014

Promoting Understanding Of Special Education Procedural Safeguards Through A Parental Workshop, Alejandra Revilla-Rico

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

By law, parents of children with disabilities must receive their Procedural Safeguards every time their student is going to be evaluated, re-evaluated, or considered for a change of disability identification or placement. Special Education teachers provide parents with a copy of Procedural Safeguards in their native language and provide an oral explanation of the safeguards. These efforts are often not enough for parents to understand their rights. This study analyzed the impact of providing a workshop on Procedural Safeguards for Spanish speaking parents. The research also examined parent's perception in regards to participation in IEPs. The results suggest that the …

Embedding A Unit On Environmental Education Into A Fourth-Grade Curriculum, James Mimosa Jan 2014

Embedding A Unit On Environmental Education Into A Fourth-Grade Curriculum, James Mimosa

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This research project integrated environmental education into the school curriculum so that elementary school students could learn about the responsible use, protection, and enjoyment of the natural environment. This project utilized four learning stations on campus as outdoor classrooms - a native plant garden, an organic vegetable garden, a vermiculture compost site, and the school ground itself - in order to ascertain the efficacy of embedding this approach in a fourth-grade science curriculum. Students' responses on a post-project open-ended questionnaire revealed that students were interested in appreciative interactions with the natural world as sources of joy and understanding. Students were …

Chapter 3. “Jungle Shows" Burma, Sears Eldredge Jan 2014

Chapter 3. “Jungle Shows" Burma, Sears Eldredge

Book Chapters

In contrast to the Thailand side of the railway, POW workers on the Burma side had been sent to Burma from the Netherlands East Indies and Sumatra. Except for the Allied bombing raids, their construction experience was very similar to that on the Thailand side. But the “jungle shows” they produced to help them survive were unique. And the larrikin antics by the Australians to subvert the Japanese attempts to film a propaganda movie are unforgettable.

An Exploration Of The Experiences Of Individuals Caring For A Family Member And The Impact This Caregiving Role Has On Their Lives., Tara Duigenan

Dissertations

Ireland, in keeping with most western societies has witnessed a steady increase in the distribution of old and very old individuals in the population. This, combined with escalations in degenerative and chronic diseases, and together with the development of new sophisticated and portable medical technologies that assist people with highly complicated health conditions to be cared for at home, places further demands on individuals to care for a family member. Furthermore, a fundamental objective of Irish Government policy for older people, children and adults with a condition or a disability is to enable these individuals to live in dignity and …

Intercultural Awareness Through English Language In Middle Schools: The Case Of Kosovo, Leonora Gashi Jan 2014

Intercultural Awareness Through English Language In Middle Schools: The Case Of Kosovo, Leonora Gashi

MA TESOL Collection

This study sought to understand opportunities for teaching and learning target culture for intercultural awareness. Utilizing Moran’s Knowing Framework and its five cultural dimensions, reviewing curriculum documents and textbook in use for Grade Six as well as survey data from 22 English language teachers in Kosovo, this study finds that there is a misalignment among curriculum documents, textbook in use, and teacher classroom practices regarding teaching culture for cultural understanding. It is noted that while curriculum documents share the goals and objectives for preparing students to become global citizens through language and culture learning in English language, this vision is …

Narrative In Technical Communication, James Fenn Jan 2014

Narrative In Technical Communication, James Fenn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this research is on the involvement of narrative learning within technical communication and the benefits that such an involvement can bring to the field. I analyze literature from within technical communication to determine how narrative is perceived, as well as the traditions in technical communication that made the field resistant to the use of narrative in the past. These findings are considered with respect to the history and definition of narrative, as well as to how narrative can improve learning outcomes when compared to expository learning approaches commonly used in technical documentation. While narrative is not a …

Signs Of Writing? Red Lustrous Wheelmade Vases And Ashkelon Amphorae, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld Jan 2014

Signs Of Writing? Red Lustrous Wheelmade Vases And Ashkelon Amphorae, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Classical Studies Faculty Research

One important question about Bronze Age potmarks is whether they are signs of writing. An affirmative answer has significant implications for our understanding of how widely a script was used within and between communities. This essay discusses two instances for which the claim of writing on ceramics has been made: Red Lustrous Wheelmade (RLWM) pottery and the “inscriptions” found at Ashkelon. In both cases, the question is whether the marks incised into these vases are to be identified as signs of the Cypro-Minoan script. The answer is important in the first instance for our understanding of the diversity and specialization …

Linguistic Advocacy As A Bridge Between Disciplines, David Bowie, Clare Dannenberg Jan 2014

Linguistic Advocacy As A Bridge Between Disciplines, David Bowie, Clare Dannenberg

Taking Linguistics Beyond Linguistics Programs and Departments Symposium

Linguistics involves, at its core, advocacy for a key part of human existence: No matter our linguistic specialty, we advocate for human language on a variety of different levels from the social and political to the scientific. Certainly, as educators, our position as advocates leaks into our pedagogy as we try to instill in our students both the rote knowledge of our discipline and also the responsibility of utilizing that knowledge in the “real world.” Many of us even create assignments that engage our students to become real-world advocates, and yet these assignments may remain within the silos of our …

Linguistic Foundations For L2 Pronunciation Teaching, Kathy L. Sands Jan 2014

Linguistic Foundations For L2 Pronunciation Teaching, Kathy L. Sands

Taking Linguistics Beyond Linguistics Programs and Departments Symposium

In this session I present a course I am proposing (and will pilot in short form this summer in Mongolia) entitled “Linguistic Foundations for L2 Pronunciation Teaching.” This course is designed to provide language-teaching majors with key linguistic foundation in phonetics and phonology to be able to analyze the linguistic source of pronunciation errors accurately and provide students with clear explanations and effective, individualized coaching. For non-native speakers of the language they will be teaching, the course is designed as well to strengthen their own pronunciation. A major component of the course will be hands-on working with L2 speakers, chosen …

Language, Gender, And Culture, Janie Rees-Miller Jan 2014

Language, Gender, And Culture, Janie Rees-Miller

Taking Linguistics Beyond Linguistics Programs and Departments Symposium

At a small college with no linguistics department and no major or minor, all linguistics courses must satisfy some general education requirements or major/minor requirements in another discipline. The course Language, Gender, and Culture was designed to satisfy the GE requirement for a course in diversity and/or global perspectives and may also be used for the Gender Studies minor. In order to satisfy these various requirements and to appeal to the broadest spectrum of students, the course has been constructed so that course content and readings include data from a variety of languages and cultures, concepts of gender and the …

Teaching To The Teachers: Secondary Education English Students In The Introductory Linguistics Course, Julie S. Amberg, Deborah J. Vause Jan 2014

Teaching To The Teachers: Secondary Education English Students In The Introductory Linguistics Course, Julie S. Amberg, Deborah J. Vause

Taking Linguistics Beyond Linguistics Programs and Departments Symposium

Non-linguistic majors can benefit from well-designed lessons in the introductory linguistics course that raise issues students will need to know about in their future careers. At our institution, the introductory linguistics course is populated by students majoring in English Literary Studies, Secondary Education English, and Professional Writing. Secondary Education English (SEE) majors take Language and Linguistics because they must fulfill requirements mandated by the state: knowledge of morphology, phonology, syntax, history of the English language, and so on. In addition to these required subjects, we introduce other issues as well that we feel are essential to developing these particular students’ …

Linguistics And Tesol At Suny Oswego, Jean Ann, Bruce Long Peng Jan 2014

Linguistics And Tesol At Suny Oswego, Jean Ann, Bruce Long Peng

Taking Linguistics Beyond Linguistics Programs and Departments Symposium

We are linguists with tenure homes in a School of Education (SOE). We were charged with (i) reviving a languishing undergraduate Linguistics major, and (ii) creating a new TESOL Program for undergraduate students destined for NYS certification to teach English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) in K-12 settings. We argued for a subset of courses in the linguistics major to serve as the arts and sciences concentration for the TESOL major. We advise and teach both the TESOL and Linguistics majors. Our teaching loads are about half in the School of Education (SOE) and half in the College of …

Linguistic Weeds: Popping Up Everywhere, Lynn Burley Jan 2014

Linguistic Weeds: Popping Up Everywhere, Lynn Burley

Taking Linguistics Beyond Linguistics Programs and Departments Symposium

The study of language is a part of a dozen other disciplines on any average sized campus, and should be a part of every general education program precisely because it is a part of so many other disciplines. Our job is to not only provide students with exceptional undergraduate and graduate linguistics degrees, but to ensure that students are exposed to linguistics in their general studies and that students have the opportunity to take linguistics courses as appropriate for their other majors and minors. The University of Central Arkansas (UCA) linguistics faculty is doing this by offering interdisciplinary programs, creating …

Transitioning From Serving Others’ Students To Serving Our Own, Julie Roberts Jan 2014

Transitioning From Serving Others’ Students To Serving Our Own, Julie Roberts

Taking Linguistics Beyond Linguistics Programs and Departments Symposium

The current study focuses on a linguistics program in the unusual situation of having emerged from another department. Therefore, the program began by creating classes that would be of interest and relevance to other fields, and, only after the formation of the stand-alone major (2008) and minor (2006), began to fill in with classes that are important to linguists but less “marketable” outside that program. The presentation will focus on the following strategies for maintaining and expanding our relevance to other majors and to the university as a whole and the success and challenges of each:

1. Use of cases/examples …

Weaving Linguistics Into A Range Of Fabrics, Sharon Klein Jan 2014

Weaving Linguistics Into A Range Of Fabrics, Sharon Klein

Taking Linguistics Beyond Linguistics Programs and Departments Symposium

No linguist is ever at a loss to understand how attention to any aspect of language as an object of inquiry can contribute to the context where the piece might be found. But linguists rarely get consulted, because what is also true is that virtually no one beyond the landscape of linguistic study is likely even to know that such a perspective on language exists, much less that it might truly be useful. Waiting for this state of affairs to change is fruitless—surely frustrating—and many of us choose to ignore the views “out there” keeping our individual and collective focus …

Using Non-Dietary Gastropods In Coastal Shell Middens To Infer Kelp And Seagrass Harvesting And Paleoenvironmental Conditions, Amira F. Ainis, René Vellanoweth, Queeny G. Lapeña, Carol S. Thornber Jan 2014

Using Non-Dietary Gastropods In Coastal Shell Middens To Infer Kelp And Seagrass Harvesting And Paleoenvironmental Conditions, Amira F. Ainis, René Vellanoweth, Queeny G. Lapeña, Carol S. Thornber

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Archaeologists analyzing shell middens typically focus on larger (>2 cm) mollusks to examine subsistence practices, impacts on littoral habitats, and paleoenvironmental conditions as well as a host of other natural and cultural phenomena. Small (<2 cm), non-dietary gastropods in archaeological shell middens also provide important clues regarding human resource procurement in littoral areas and coastal paleoenvironments. We present data from two sites on the California Channel Islands to demonstrate the range of information that can be gained by analyzing small gastropod shells. Identifications revealed the remains of over 4500 non-dietary small gastropods from 75 taxa. Human harvesting of marine macrophytes is suggested by the presence of 18 species that are predominantly associated with seaweeds and seagrasses. Quantification measures revealed high diversity and equitability indices, oscillating taxonomic richness, and decreasing densities through time at both sites. Likelihood ratio tests revealed differences in assemblage composition between Early Holocene and later components at one site, and demonstrated similarities in the relative composition of non-dietary shell assemblages between both sites during the Middle Holocene. Incorporating detailed studies of less conspicuous “incidental” shellfish remains in archaeological midden studies has the potential to contribute to our understanding of past human land use practices and littoral paleoecology. Our findings are applicable to archaeologists working in coastal settings around the world, as well as marine ecologists interested in intertidal paleo-habitats and kelp forest ecosystems.
