Accent Acquisition: Jamaican Creole Speakers' Pronunciation Of Standard American English, Emily Anderson Jan 2014

Accent Acquisition: Jamaican Creole Speakers' Pronunciation Of Standard American English, Emily Anderson

Honors Thesis Collection

When individuals immigrate to another country, they are frequently exposed to a new linguistic environment. As a result of this exposure, individuals often modify their personal accent to reflect the linguistic environment. This phenomenon of accent acquisition occurs frequently in our multicultural world, but has not been widely researched. Jamaican Creole, known also as Patwa, is spoken to some extent by the majority of Jamaicans and has a close linguistic relationship with Standard American English (SAE). Through oral and written interviews with six Jamaican immigrants living in the United States, this study examines the accent acquisition of SAE from Patwa. …

Community Engagement As A Process And An Outcome Of Developing Culturally Grounded Health Communication Interventions: An Example From The Decide Project, Angela L. Palmer-Wackerly, Jessica Krok, Phokeng M. Dailey, Linda Kight, Janice L. Krieger Jan 2014

Community Engagement As A Process And An Outcome Of Developing Culturally Grounded Health Communication Interventions: An Example From The Decide Project, Angela L. Palmer-Wackerly, Jessica Krok, Phokeng M. Dailey, Linda Kight, Janice L. Krieger

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Community engagement is a process often used in developing effective health communication interventions, especially in traditionally underserved cultural contexts. While the potentially positive outcomes of community engagement are well established, the communication processes that result in engagement with cultural groups are less apparent. The focus on the outcomes of engagement at the expense of describing how engagement occurs makes it difficult for methods to be improved upon and replicated by future studies. The purpose of the current manuscript is to illustrate the process of achieving community engagement through the development of a culturally grounded health communication intervention. We offer practical …

Hosting Language: Immigration And Translation In The Merry Wives Of Windsor, Kathryn Vomero Santos Jan 2014

Hosting Language: Immigration And Translation In The Merry Wives Of Windsor, Kathryn Vomero Santos

English Faculty Research

I will argue that Shakespeare uses the dialogic form of drama to stage such encounters between the languages of guest and host and to demonstrate that hosting the stranger in the English language causes the play’s English characters, along with its audiences and readers, to become “sensitive to the strangeness of [their] own language” and yet resistant to the idea that the immigrant can ever be fully “Englished” (Ricoeur 2006: 29).7

User Centered Clinical Decision Support Tools: Adoption Across Clinician Training Level, L. J. Mccullagh, A. Sofianou, J. Kannry, D. M. Mann, T. G. Mcginn

Journal Articles

BACKGROUND: Dissemination and adoption of clinical decision support (CDS) tools is a major initiative of the Affordable Care Act's Meaningful Use program. Adoption of CDS tools is multipronged with personal, organizational, and clinical settings factoring into the successful utilization rates. Specifically, the diffusion of innovation theory implies that 'early adopters' are more inclined to use CDS tools and younger physicians tend to be ranked in this category. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the differences in adoption of CDS tools across providers' training level. PARTICIPANTS: From November 2010 to 2011, 168 residents and attendings from an academic medical institution were enrolled into …

Empirical Evidence For Discrete Neurocognitive Subgroups In Bipolar Disorder: Clinical Implications, K. E. Burdick, M. Russo, S. Frangou, K. Mahon, R. J. Braga, M. Shanahan, A. K. Malhotra

Journal Articles

Background. Recent data suggest trait-like neurocognitive impairments in bipolar disorder (BPD), with deficits about 1 S.D. below average, less severe than deficits noted in schizophrenia. The frequency of significant impairment in BPD is approximately 60%, with 40% of patients characterized as cognitively spared. This contrasts with a more homogeneous presentation in schizophrenia. It is not understood why some BPD patients develop deficits while others do not. Method. A total of 136 patients with BPD completed the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery and data were entered into hierarchical cluster analyses to: (1) determine the optimal number of clusters (subgroups) that fit the …

The French Of Algeria – Can The Colonisers Be Colonised?, Aoife Connolly Jan 2014

The French Of Algeria – Can The Colonisers Be Colonised?, Aoife Connolly

Books/Book Chapters

The Algerian War, 1954– 1962, was arguably the most traumatic war of decolonisation fought by Western colonial powers. The French had occupied Algeria since 1830 and the territory had formed three administrative départements of France since 1848. Thus, when conflict arose in 1954, the French administration could not conceive of a situation in which France was at war with itself and this ‘war without a name’ was referred to as ‘the events’ or ‘operations to maintain order’. Indeed, the war was only officially recognised in France in 1999. The war was particularly violent as Algeria was a settler colony in …

Making An Impact: New Directions For Arts And Humanities Research, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2014

Making An Impact: New Directions For Arts And Humanities Research, Ellen Hazelkorn

Articles

The severity of the global economic crisis has put the spotlight firmly on measuring academic and research performance and productivity, and assessing its contribution, value, impact and benefit. While traditionally, research output and impact was measured by peer-publications and citations, there is increased emphasis on a “market-driven approach”, which favours the bio-, medical and technological sciences, and helped reinforce a disciplinary hierarchy in which arts and humanities research (A&HR) has struggled for attention. This article charts the changing policy environment across Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway. It draws on evidence from the HERAVALUE project which studied how different stakeholders value …

The Effect Of The Helps Program On The Oral Reading Fluency And Accuracy Rates Of Third-, Fourth-, And Fifth-Grade Students, Susan C. Blackburn Jan 2014

The Effect Of The Helps Program On The Oral Reading Fluency And Accuracy Rates Of Third-, Fourth-, And Fifth-Grade Students, Susan C. Blackburn

Education Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation was designed to examine the effects of the HELPS Program on the oral reading fluency and accuracy rates of third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students as compared to students who received regular classroom instruction only. The study was conducted in a school district in northwestern North Carolina. The students in this study scored below benchmark on a Reading 3D End of Year Assessment and were nonproficient on the North Carolina end-of-grade reading test. As fluency is tied to reading comprehension, it is important that students have sufficient fluency and accuracy skills to read grade-level texts.

The study used Reading …

An Investigation Of Factors Affecting Student Performance In Algebraic Word Problem Solutions, Jerry Eugene Wright Jan 2014

An Investigation Of Factors Affecting Student Performance In Algebraic Word Problem Solutions, Jerry Eugene Wright

Education Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation was designed to investigate the potential significance of several student algebraic word problem solving skills. The solution of an algebra word problem (AWP) requires the creation and solution of an equation based on the problem context. Common Core State Standards in both English Language Arts and Mathematics emphasize student learning and proficiency in algebra word problem contexts. Eight factors of student mathematical ability were proposed, and three of those eight factors were studied in depth to determine their significance. Similar research supported the theory that the translation phase of the solution process presented the student with the most …

Attending To Small Talk In The Classroom: An Issue Of Answerability/ Responsibility, Carmen N. Veloria Jan 2014

Attending To Small Talk In The Classroom: An Issue Of Answerability/ Responsibility, Carmen N. Veloria

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

Education, as a field, is inherently political, ideological, and contextual (Freire, 1970). As a result, there are no easy answers to address the myriad of highly contestable educational issues that arise as part of the daily classroom discourse. Educators can find themselves at a los for words when it comes to providing clear cut answers given the number of highly polarizing stances, comments, and opinions that elicit strong student and teacher responses. Yet, in the context of the classroom space, the teacher holds a lot of power, which must be coupled with an ethical responsiveness to student engagement, participation, and …

Female Bias In Technical Communication And An Exploration Of Pedagogical Strategies For Reversing The Bias, Rebecca Beeson Jan 2014

Female Bias In Technical Communication And An Exploration Of Pedagogical Strategies For Reversing The Bias, Rebecca Beeson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores technical communication and seeks to establish that females outnumber males in the field while also holder more high-level positions. It further seeks to show why a field does not benefit from having one sex outnumber the other. The benefits of having an equal number of females and males contributing to the growth and expansion of the field are discussed. Finally, this thesis discusses potential pedagogical strategies which could be employed at the college level as a means of attracting more young men to the field and allowing for maximum growth of technical communication as a field of …

A Novel Ontology Analysis Tool, Zhixiao Wang, Shixiong Xia, Qiang Niu Jan 2014

A Novel Ontology Analysis Tool, Zhixiao Wang, Shixiong Xia, Qiang Niu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

With the development of semantic web, more and more ontologies are developed for various purposes. In order to evaluate these ontologies, there have emerged numerous ontology analysis approaches. This paper introduces the classical field theory to ontology area, and puts forward a semantic field model to analyze ontology characteristics from the perspective of concept interaction and hierarchical clustering. In semantic field, the equipotential lines present a natural nesting structure. The equipotential lines’ distribution corresponds with the semantics’ distribution resulting from the interaction and association of ontology concepts. Based on equipotential line distribution, we can analyze concept hierarchical clustering characteristics. Experiments …

Decision-Making Through Uncertain Linguistic Information By Multi-Attribute Group: Concerning Credit Guarantee Products Risk, Yong He, Jian-Xing Weng Jan 2014

Decision-Making Through Uncertain Linguistic Information By Multi-Attribute Group: Concerning Credit Guarantee Products Risk, Yong He, Jian-Xing Weng

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

According to the complexity of credit guarantee products risk, a corresponding risk evaluation system is established here. And uncertain linguistic information is adopted to describe the attribute weight and attribute value of evaluation indicators, and thus a multi-attribute group decision-making model of uncertain linguistic information concerning credit guarantee products risks is established. ULWM and ULHA operators are respectively used in this paper to collect evaluation values of synthesized attribute and overall attribute values of groups. And thus the comprehensive evaluation information of alternatives will be obtained. Then, possibility formula is used to construct a possibility matrix based on which we …

Global Diasporas And Mission, Amos Yong, Chandler H. Im Jan 2014

Global Diasporas And Mission, Amos Yong, Chandler H. Im

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

The movement of people from their homelands is increasing exponentially. Such waves of both immigration and migration triggered by various factors have created new opportunities for the church and its mission. This volume explores such global diasporas from both ecclesiological and missiological perspectives. Its various case studies invite reconsideration of the missionary and evangelistic task of the church in response to contemporary global dynamics. The image of the dandelion on the front cover symbolizes diverse people groups dispersed around the globe, even as the Christian imagination views such dispersal as being carried by the winds of the Holy Spirit.

The Doctrine Of Legal Writing - Book Review Of Linda H. Edwards's Readings In Persuasion: Briefs That Changed The World, Lucille A. Jewel Jan 2014

The Doctrine Of Legal Writing - Book Review Of Linda H. Edwards's Readings In Persuasion: Briefs That Changed The World, Lucille A. Jewel

Scholarly Works

In legal education, the word “doctrinal” is most often used to refer to courses such as Contracts, Torts, Property, and Criminal Procedure. Doctrinal has long been used as a descriptive adjective, but also as a word of exclusion. We often hear that legal writing courses are not substantive and not as significant as doctrinal courses. Linda Edwards’s new book, Readings in Persuasion: Briefs that Changed the World, persuasively challenges this view.

This paper evaluates what we mean when we use the term doctrinal in a legal education context and considers six powerful descriptors for the doctrine of legal writing, all …
