Roubaud's Circus: Playing With Words And Animals In Les Animaux De Tout Le Monde, Miranda R. Mueller
Roubaud's Circus: Playing With Words And Animals In Les Animaux De Tout Le Monde, Miranda R. Mueller
Master's Theses
It is commonly held that there is a solid, defined line existing between men and animals. This thesis explores the ideological boundary and, through a close examination of Jacques Roubaud’s collection of poetry Les animaux de tout le monde, imagines the line as a fluid structure that can be broken, approached, and multiplied.
In a circus theme following the playful style of Roubaud’s own verses, I include several close readings of poems as well as an analysis of Roubaud’s influence from Lewis Carroll’s nonsense genre, the Fables of Jean de la Fontaine, and Medieval bestiaries in order to create a …
Dialect And Characterization In Mountain Meadows, Adrienne Landes, Dr. David Bowie
Dialect And Characterization In Mountain Meadows, Adrienne Landes, Dr. David Bowie
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Great writers are often praised for their fine ear for dialogue; Mark Twain, Jane Austen, and Thomas Hardy all had the talent for recreating discourse that gives their work authenticity and their characters individuality. While I will not be writing about my contemporary neighbors and countrymen, as did these authors, I have studied the language of my characters in an effort both to enrich the body of existing linguistic research, and also as background research for a play about the Mountain Meadows Massacre. The best dialogue makes use of the eccentricities unique to a society, thus I have recorded the …
Vowel Laxing In Utah English: Early Findings Of The Early Utah English Project, Ellen Lund, Dr. David Bowie
Vowel Laxing In Utah English: Early Findings Of The Early Utah English Project, Ellen Lund, Dr. David Bowie
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The study of dialect formation typically consists of examining changes within an already established dialect region, such as those caused by large-scale immigration or an extension of a previously existing dialect region. Utah English, on the other hand, was formed by native English speakers settling outside existing dialect regions. While this type of dialect formation has occurred before, usually only written records (if any) exist to document changes. The study of Utah English formation is a rare opportunity, because audio recordings of these dialect speakers were made.

A morpheme is the smallest grammatical unit of meaning such as a prefix, a root word, or a suffix. Morphology then, is the study of the processes by which morphemes combine to form words.1 Understanding how words are formed is imperative to such applications as speech recognition, web searches, and corpus searches, which depend on identifying every instance of a word, including all inflected forms. For example, a search for the word run must recognize running, runner, and ran as possible results even though they have additional morphemes or irregular conjugated forms. In addition to technical applications, understanding morphology is …
The Effects Of Modern Standard Arabic Immersion Programs Versus Traditional Preschool Attendance On The Reading And Composition Scores Of Arab Children, Jennifer Eschler, Dr. R. Kirk Belnap
The Effects Of Modern Standard Arabic Immersion Programs Versus Traditional Preschool Attendance On The Reading And Composition Scores Of Arab Children, Jennifer Eschler, Dr. R. Kirk Belnap
Journal of Undergraduate Research
While Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is used for schooling and for writing in the Arab world, it is not the oral means of communication. Several dialects of Arabic exist. Each of these is related to Modern Standard Arabic, but vocabulary and some basic grammar rules differ according to geographic location. Although primary schools are conducted in MSA, most preschool instruction is in the local dialect or there is a combination of dialect and MSA with the amount of MSA varying according to school and instructor.

Defining Gender Differences In Suriname Through Language, Shaun Hunley, Dr. David Bowie
Journal of Undergraduate Research
For the people of Suriname, the word “Sranan” is more than just a word, it is a symbol of national pride and independence. “Sranan” is the native word for Suriname, a small country on the northeastern coast of South America. Throughout its remarkable history, Suriname has transformed into a nation rich in culture and values. Its unique society bears the scars of Dutch colonialism while absorbing facets of African, Indian, and Indonesian cultures.

Armenian Language Textbook: A Communicative Approach To Language Learning, John Henry Jorgensen, Dr. Cynthia Hallen
Armenian Language Textbook: A Communicative Approach To Language Learning, John Henry Jorgensen, Dr. Cynthia Hallen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In the Post-Soviet era, there has been a dearth of language materials available to those wishing to learn the Armenian language. Thorough language texts are simply not available in Eastern Armenian, the official language of the Republic of Armenia. The small number of texts that exist are primarily geared toward native Russian speakers who wished to learn Armenian during the former Soviet regime.
Phrasal Cloning Through Analogical Modeling Of Language, Deryl K. Hatch, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Phrasal Cloning Through Analogical Modeling Of Language, Deryl K. Hatch, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Analogical Modeling (AM) is an algorithm for systematically comparing related sets of data (‘vectors’) in search of patterns of recurrence or dominance, whether they be apparent or not, in order to predict the likely outcome of novel occurrences. As an alternative to rule-based explanations of language, for example, it allows analogy to predict behavior, instead of rules prescribing that behavior. The motivation behind this approach is the idea that the human mind learns and processes language more by analogy than through applying hierarchal rules. It has successfully modeled many tendencies in language: historical change in English, irregularities and “exceptional” behavior …
Two-Level Persian Morphology Engine, Jonathan Dehdari, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Two-Level Persian Morphology Engine, Jonathan Dehdari, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Persian language, or Farsi, stands in a unique position in the international scene for political, religious, and historical reasons. With over 60 million speakers in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, interest has been growing lately in the West in using current technologies to better manipulate information in Farsi. In order to utilize Farsi data effectively, computers must be able to understand its morphology, or the individual components of a word. This understanding of morphology is necessary because of the language’s productive usage of affixes, as well as the substantial interaction between its morphology and its phonology and orthography. I have …
Timing The Introduction Of Kanji In The Study Of Japanese As A Second Language, Kerilee Grames, Dr. Robert A. Russell
Timing The Introduction Of Kanji In The Study Of Japanese As A Second Language, Kerilee Grames, Dr. Robert A. Russell
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Japanese language has a reputation of being difficult for native English speakers to master as a second language because of kanji, a complex, character alphabet that the Japanese borrowed from China. One of the greatest struggles for teachers of Japanese as a second language (JSL) is knowing when to introduce these foreign characters to their students. As a student who has struggled to learn kanji, and one who intends to also teach it, I proposed to study the research that has already been done in this area, to observe teachers of JSL in both Japan and America, and to …

Predicting The Risk Of Suicide By Analyzing The Text Of Clinical Notes, Chris Poulin, Brian Shiner, Paul Thompson, Linas Vepstas, Yinong Young-Xu, Benjamin Goertzel, Bradley Watts, Laura Flashman, Thomas Mcallister
Dartmouth Scholarship
We developed linguistics-driven prediction models to estimate the risk of suicide. These models were generated from unstructured clinical notes taken from a national sample of U.S. Veterans Administration (VA) medical records. We created three matched cohorts: veterans who committed suicide, veterans who used mental health services and did not commit suicide, and veterans who did not use mental health services and did not commit suicide during the observation period (n = 70 in each group). From the clinical notes, we generated datasets of single keywords and multi-word phrases, and constructed prediction models using a machine-learning algorithm based on a …

Exploring Strange, New Worlds: Travellers And Foreigners In Medieval Iberian Literature, Lauren Taranu
Exploring Strange, New Worlds: Travellers And Foreigners In Medieval Iberian Literature, Lauren Taranu
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This dissertation examines written travel accounts produced by Castilian and Andalusi authors and voyagers from twelfth- to fifteenth-century Iberia. The guiding research questions revolve around how journeyers encountered, reacted to, and reported on foreign peoples, lands, and customs as they left behind their homes and travelled throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. From their liminal position as persons displaced from their home societies and separated from the ideology and social relations of their native lands, travellers offer a new perspective on a web of connections that permeated a dynamic, responsive, and interconnected medieval world.
Chapter One examines the travel accounts of …

Bargaining Market Equity Adjustments By Rank And Discipline, Jonathan P. Blitz, Jeffrey F. Cross
Bargaining Market Equity Adjustments By Rank And Discipline, Jonathan P. Blitz, Jeffrey F. Cross
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
Faculty contract negotiations generally include wages, hours, and other conditions of employment as well as mutually agreed non-mandatory subjects of bargaining. Negotiators typically address wages in terms of across-the-board increases, promotion in rank, merit increases, and one-time signing bonuses. Less typically, faculty salary negotiations include various forms of equity adjustments and salary increases linked to the underlying market and social forces and to salary compression that may, or may not, be related to these forces. The authors describe how they negotiated differential discipline-specific target salaries based in part on College and University Personnel Association faculty salary data.
Task-Centered Conversation Systems For Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Aric Bills, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Task-Centered Conversation Systems For Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Aric Bills, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Many language educators have envisioned computer systems capable of providing language learners with intelligent spoken interaction in the target language. Although we can’t expect to see a fully conversant computer for years to come, there are several resources available which can be used to make scaled-down, domain-restricted, speech-driven conversational computer systems from which language learners can benefit. Many of these resources are free for academic use and can be used on a personal computer. My project explores new ways to combine these resources to create useful task-centered conversational systems.
Reading Pedagogy In Today's Classroom, Maria Beeman-Rygalski
Reading Pedagogy In Today's Classroom, Maria Beeman-Rygalski
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate the phenomenon of successful primary classroom teachers' instruction, in the area of reading pedagogy. All children who are capable of reading must be taught how to read; such is the essential responsibility of American schooling. Moats (1999) describes reading as the most basic, yet critical responsibility of schooling. Haycock (1998), Marzano (2003), and Nye, Konstantopulos, and Hedges (2004) determined that the influence of an effective teacher has the biggest impact on student achievement, independent of anything else that happens in school. There is little research linking evidence of teacher perceptions, knowledge …

Characteristics Of Spoken And Written Communication In The Opening And Closing Sections Of Instant Messaging, Kenta Nishimaki
Characteristics Of Spoken And Written Communication In The Opening And Closing Sections Of Instant Messaging, Kenta Nishimaki
Dissertations and Theses
This study examines opening and closing segments in instant messaging (IM) and demonstrates how openings and closings differ between oral conversation and instant messaging as well as the factors that account for the difference. Many researchers have discussed the differences and similarities between spoken and written languages. Tannen (1980) claims that spoken and written languages are not distinct categories and there is a continuum between them. She also holds that interpersonal involvement is one of the factors that determine if a particular communication is closer to spoken communication or written communication.
I will analyze IM, which is best thought of …

Exposure to neighborhood danger during childhood has negative effects that permeate multiple dimensions of childhood. The current study examined whether mothers’, fathers’, and children’s perceptions of neighborhood danger are related to child aggression, whether parental monitoring moderates this relation, and whether harsh parenting mediates this relation. Interviews were conducted with a sample of 1293 children (age M = 10.68, SD = 0.66; 51% girls) and their mothers (n = 1282) and fathers (n = 1075) in nine countries (China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States). Perceptions of greater neighborhood danger were associated with more …
